Jan 30th - Outfit #27 - Leaves and Replacement Fluevogs

Oh, I faked it today...sucked it up (buttercup) and pretended to be more well than I was. I need a couch. Now.

Please forgive me for not commenting the last few days - life's been crazy and there are social things all weekend (Book Club, Art Gallery, Super Bowl party!), and it's the end of the challenge and that's going to take a looooong time to analyze, and woo, did I mention I need a couch? And some tea...this cold medication is really dehydrating.

The penultimate outfit:
Not really pulling out all the stops or anything; I feel that this capsule has run its course, and if I had to do too many more days, I would start repeating myself (oh, the horror).

So here we have the classic button-down blue shirt (a nice light shade of navy), last seen here with a little bit of the combat boot action, and the black maxi (last seen here in the road trip capsule).
I was not pleased with how the seams have puckered on the skirt since I washed it, and now that I have the Black Suede Maxi Skirt of Awesome (can't wait to wear it), this one is going into the giveaway pile.

Notice anything about my olive Fluevogs here? Yes, all intact straps!
The Replacement Shoes arrived! Yay! I last wore the sad, Vizzini-destroyed shoes here, and now I get to play with them! Custom Fluevogs - wee!

The stuff:
I like leaf patterns, and played with the ones on this cool Smoking Lily obi by wearing this vintage two-tone leaf necklace that I bought for $5.00 at the Vintage Fair in the fall.

I also forgot about this new-to-me ring:
I believe the technical term is "honkin'", as in "that's a honkin' ring you've got there." I bought it on consignment while I was out Christmas shopping last month, for $36.00. A little pricey, but the stamp inside (JGI) led me to JGI Jewelry (not linking, it's just a wholesaler's website), where I learned that it's gold-plated and those are cubic zirconias. Yup, nothing but the best here.

Shirt (Banana Republic, consignment), skirt (Nygard, thrifted), shoes (Wonders Ayers, Fluevog), obi (Smoking Lily), ring (JGI, consignment), necklace (vintage, thrifted).

I was feeling very sorry for myself and p*ssed off at Vizzini when I ordered my replacement shoes online, and lo, the lovely Toronto Team acknowledged Vizzini's vile deed:
At least John Fluevog thinks I'm awesome.

Vizinni had no comment.
"I'm just minding my own beeswax, here."
That's his Chairman of the Board pose.
"I'll eat your new shoes too."
I keep my closet closed now.

Jan 31st - Outfit #28 - The Last Outfit

Holy smokes, you guys! This is it! The last day of my year-long challenge!

That's a lot of pressure for an outfit to bear.
I wanted to end this capsule year with an outfit that would sort of summarize the year (again, no pressure). What we have here:

  • mostly neutrals (black, olive)
  • bright legs
  • fistfuls of rings
  • colour
  • leather
  • short (pushing that envelope for a 45 y.o. blogger)

It's a little rock & roll, but still (I hope) on the classic/classy side of a business casual outfit, and I think it shows that I've got an artistic bent.

This is my trusty olive blazer, which I last wore here with a sparkly top, over my black leather dress (last worn here on my long weekend, last outfit). I got a few "is that a leather dress?" comments from people today, but it's not the first time I've worn it to work!
I have a long-sleeved thin layering tee (not part of the capsule) worn underneath to keep the top of the dress modest and keep me warm. I ended up roasting all day! I really wanted to wear this lovely huge silk scarf that the always-awesome Megan Mae sent me ages ago, but I just cooked in it. I didn't wear the scarf all day. However, I'm headed off to Book Club shortly, so I'll put it back on.

The boots are the much-favoured black Gabor ones, last seen here (2nd outfit) not two days ago - shocking! - with my ribbon skirt.

Jacket (RW & Co., consignment), layering tee (Plum), dress (Danier Leather, thrifted), boots (Gabor), earrings (EricaWeiner).

Still doped to the gills on cold medication, but I felt a lot more chipper today. Thanks so much for the good vibes from all of you readers out there! You're the best.

And speaking of the best...here we are! At the end of the challenge. I will try to get the January summary up as soon as I can, but we have a busy weekend ahead. I'll also be doing tons of summarizing and analyzing of the spreadsheet, so you can expect about a post a week on those - and of course, we'll be voting for the favourite Wild Card Outfit! Thank you for your patience as I get stuff written (I do have a very full life!), and thank all of you for following along on my journey this year. It's been really fun to share this with you.

A few people have asked me, "What's next?" Well, that's the big question, isn't it? I thought about this long and hard, and decided that I wanted to incorporate some of new-found self-knowledge about my style into my shopping. 'Cause I love to shop - and I'm not going to stop. Of course, I'll continue to shop second-hand first and locally and ethically-produced if new. But I need to see how well I learned my lessons...so...

One. Two. Three.

Every time I get a new item, I will challenge myself to wear it three times in a week, to see how well it incorporates into my wardrobe. Each outfit will be up for voting  by YOU (yay!): do you like it or not? After 3 wears, if the outfits created with the new item garner more no votes than yeses, it's gone (I retain final say and veto power, naturally).

Sound like fun?

Post-Challenge: When In Doubt, Wear a Dress

This feels so weird! I admit, I struggled with what to wear on Day One after the challenge! After a year of only having 30 items to choose from, it was a bit panicky to review my entire closet (and all the stuff hiding underneath) to find something to wear - there's so much!

In addition to the "Like it or Lose it" voting on my new items, I'm also going to apply the same voting system to the items in my closet that didn't get into a capsule last year, and yet remained in my wardrobe. The first item up is...this black dress!
I was lazy and just used the same boots I had in the January capsule (summary forthcoming at some point), last worn here. I took the harnesses off them this time.

I bought this dress at Winners in the fall of 2007 - it was part of the re-stock of my wardrobe after I lost 50 lbs. I wore it for my 40th birthday party, and possibly a couple of other times pre-blog. It's by Max Studio and I think it was under $40. It's hugely comfortable and easy to wear. But is it "me"?

I last wore it for our December 2011 Christmas trip to Powell River with tights (including these leopard ones) and boots. I wore it earlier that same month (2nd outfit) with...tights and boots! I'm sensing a trend. I've also worn it in summer (June 2011, 2nd outfit) with sandals, but in mostly winter (January 2011). I also wear it shopping (in November 2010) because it's easy to try clothes on with it. It's one of those lazy outfit dresses - a jammy dress (as worn in December 2009). I've dressed it up with heels too (September 2009), including orange ones (May 2009). I've worn it to feel better (January 2009), and as an all-black theme week before our Alice Cooper concert (September 2008). Speaking of concerts, I also wore it to Vancouver when we went to see Rush (June 2008).
I am looking forward to seeing if I can still make the dress exciting over the next 7 days.

Here we go! Time to vote.

The black dress: Outfit #1.

Black Max Studio Dress

The stuff:
Mismatched gold hoop earrings (I lost one, got a new pair and then lost one of them). That's the necklace Mom gave me for Christmas.

Dress (Max Studio), tights (Le Chateau), boots (Adriana Agnes, Fluevog), necklace (Global Village), bracelet (Club Monaco).

Remember the amazing bright strapless dress with the broken zipper that I thrifted a few weeks ago for only $10.00? I had the zipper replaced and the dress taken in two inches - by a tailor! This is a first for me - I have never taken anything to a tailor before. I found this old guy, Vlad, who has a little tiny shop in the basement of a building near my office downtown. He did a beautiful job on this, and it only cost me $40 for major seaming work on it!

I was happy it was ready in time to wear out to the Urbanite event at the Art Gallery on Friday night:
Rock on!
I have a thing for strapless dresses, especially when they are really fitted - this one was perfect. No tugging all night, and it wasn't too tight.
I showed off my ink, of course. Any opportunity!

There's something about pink legs that I love.
I bonded with several women (and men) over my Fluevogs. These are my Prepare Guides, last worn in July 2011, and featured in my May 30 for 30 capsule (recap).

I did a mix of new and vintage: old punk cuff, recent Shi Studio wrist-wrap.
Polka dots!

Fistfuls of rings.
Vintage snake ring, new Wendy Brandes lapiz lazuli ring.

A light jacket for the walk down.
We had a good time, but I'm glad the events are only 3 hours long - I was exhausted by the end and couldn't wait to climb into bed. Ugh, this is a nasty cold.

I debated whether I should include this dress in the Like it or Lose it voting, but I think my reluctance to do so may indicate where one of my weaknesses with keeping clothes is: it's pretty! I like it! I need to remind myself that I want my full wardrobe to be functional.

So...AJ Bari vintage dress: Outfit #1

Vintage 80s AJ Bari Dress

This one is going to be a challenge to re-mix!

Jacket (Le Chateau, consignment), dress (AJ Bari, vintage 80s, thrifted), shoes (Prepare Guides, Fluevogs), belt (80s vintage, thrifted), earrings (locally-made), studded cuff (vintage 80s), turquoise wrist-wrap (Shi Studio), snake ring (vintage 80s), lapis lazuli ring (Wendy Brandes), red/silver ring (Oscar & Libby's).

I'm going to be running votes on several items concurrently, as you can see. More fun that way!

Today, L and I met Chris and Alli for lunch. I felt like a kid in the candy store; whatever shall I wear out of all these clothes!
I chose this black midi-length leather skirt, thrifted here for $20.00.

My red silk blouse was featured three times in the August 2011 30 for 30 capsule (recap).
The vest was part of the January 30 for 30 capsule, and only got worn once (here, with the turquoise fringed skirt). Obviously an oversight of me not to wear it more!

One can never have enough pairs of red boots.
I've missed these lovely burgundy boots! They were in the March 2011 30 for 30 capsule (recap).

Since my white leather jacket was still sitting where I'd dumped it last night, I wore it again today.

The red shirt has a very strong pink-y tone to it, so I went with a pink and red necklace.
We're having a Super Bowl party tomorrow for all the players in the football pool - chili is simmering on the stove right now, filling the house with a lovely spicy smell. Mmmm!

Blouse (Elite International, thrifted), vest (Bisou Bisou, consignment), skirt (Halogen, thrifted), boots (Miz Mooz), necklace (thrifted), earrings (Plum).

Ah, weekend, it felt like you were barely there long enough! So much excitement, and now I am just tired and ready for a nap.

But we slog on, and we wear the crazy vintage dress a second time!
And yes, I did dye my hair again - it's blonder!
Following my adventures at the Art Gallery on Friday night (2nd outfit), I crashed for the rest of the weekend, hiding out and watching football with a gaggle of friends - exciting game!

Today, it's back to the grind - still sick, with a hacking cough. I just had a nap, so blog and then dinner. I'm halfway through the January capsule recap, so stay tuned.

I wore this dress as a skirt today, using one of the layering tricks I learned while remixing my dresses in capsules this year. The cardigan was deployed in September's capsule (recap here).
I added a black belt, lacy black tights and blue blue blue suede shoes (previously featured in May's capsule, recap here).

So, how does this outfit treat you? Vote!

AJ Bari 80s dress: Outfit #2

Linking up to "Visible Monday" at Patti's Not Dead Yet Style!
The stuff (yes! return of the "stuff pictures"!):
Such a great vivid pattern!

I wore a fuzzy felt rose and little turquoise matching flower studs.
I got several comments on my "sunshine" and bright colours today.

Dress (AJ Bari, vintage 80s, thrifted), cardigan (Jessica, consignment), shoes (Feet First), felt flower and earrings (locally made), belt (Plum).

I know I've told you many times about what a monster Vizzini is - and the evidence of his attack on my Fluevog Wonders Ayers was certainly visceral. But when L tried to put his boots on the other day, I had to take some pictures.

Lace-up boots: meet your match!
Sneak attack from under the legs
He's going for the laces - he loves to chew them. These Fluevog boots have really long laces, so there is much whipping around and frenetic biting. Most of my pictures were blurry.

Other foot:
"Must...bite...laces!"
Paws and claws to catch the wily laces.
"Got one!"
L is more good-humoured about it, but we both just shove him out of the way.

And this is it - a year is finished! Here's my recap of the 30 For 30 For 12 challenge for January.

[Warning: this is a big post]
Summary of Items with Links to Pictures

Shoes/Boots: 7 pairs

Skirts: 6

Tops: 5

Sweaters/Cardigans: 1

Jackets/Blazers: 4

Pants:

Dresses: 3

Other: 4

General Observations on January's Capsule
  • Holy crap! This is it! It's finished! Done! Over! I definitely had a little of the "horse to the barn" syndrome here and really wanted this month to be over. On the other hand, it's actually really much easier to get dressed when you only have 30 items to chose from.
  • I had 2 black skirts and a black dress this month. Three skirt-lengths were represented, but still, I have obviously NOT learned my lesson about duplicate items yet! I would much have preferred to have an olive skirt instead of one of the black ones.
  • There was a reason that two of these pairs of shoes were left at the end of the capsule year, and then only worn twice. Shoes that don't make it in the capsule = shoes that don't get worn. However, I have several pairs in my wardrobe that have still not been worn, so we'll see if these fall into this category as we go through "Like it or Lose it" voting with those this year.
  • Twelve of the 30 items were purchased new - I think this is the highest percentage of new items I've had all year. Three of those items (the Smoking Lily moose tee and the moto jacket, and the Floating Gold Iceberg capelet) were purchased new, and are locally/ethically produced, and two items are Fluevogs (locally designed in Vancouver, ethically produced overseas in Peru and Portugal). Not too bad, but I can do better - only two of the remaining items were purchased new in the last year (the two skirts are from Dots).
  • I played with "Other" items this month, with mixed success. The cape never got worn as a cape, and I ended up disliking the capelet. However, I adore the vests.
  • This month had a lot of "orphan"/leftover items that never made it into previous capsules. It's a tricky thing, when you're near the end and there are all those clothes waiting for a capsule - the poor wallflowers of the closet!
  • No Wild Card this month - January is so boring!
What Got Worn the Most/Least

Shoes: Unsurprisingly, the black boots got worn a lot: 8 times total. This was followed by the next-most-comfortable, the Fluevog olive Wonders Ayers (both pairs, pre- and post-Vizzini's ravaging, and the replacement pair) at 6 wears. The combat boots got a lot of wear on our jaunt to Powell River (4 wears total), the lavender booties got 3 wears, and the red Adrian Agnes boots softened up over their 3 wears. I only wore the snakeskin wedges and the black heeled loafers twice each.

Skirts: Skirt wear was pretty even all month, although the black maxi and the brown asymmetrical skirt both were worn the most at 4 times each. The blue knit and the black midi were worn 3 times each, and the red ribbon skirt and the turquoise fringed suede skirt were only worn twice each, which was expected as they are a little tougher to wear, not being neutrals.

Tops: I didn't plan my tops properly - I threw in a bunch of newer purchases as filler at the last minute (three  were purchased in December), and didn't account for the sleeveless nature of many of them. Aside from that, they were fine - all tops were worn either 3 times (the BR blue shirt and the moose tee) and the rest were worn twice each. I love the two vintage handmade blouses and am looking forward to wearing them more.

Sweaters/Cardigans: I only put the one sweater in this month - the basic but boring cream cowl-necked sweater - and really should have had a cardigan for all the sleeveless tops in this capsule. I liked the cowl sweater, but it's so dull. It was worn four times.

Jackets/Blazers: The landslide winner this month was the olive blazer, worn a whopping five times. And this is its second appearance in a capsule! Don't have an olive blazer? I think it's a wardrobe staple! I wore each of the other jackets twice each.

Pants: No pants. Didn't miss 'em.

Dresses: I wore the red dress five times (partly due to 3 wears while on vacation visiting the inlaws) - it was a very versatile layering piece - and both of the other dresses three times.

Other: I wore the purple suede vest 4 times, which surprised me, since of all of the "other" items, it was the one I thought I would wear the least! I was equally shocked that I only wore the denim vest once (although I've worn it again since this capsule ended), but the mix of the items was not quite right for it (it requires a top with sleeves). I wore the Smoking Lily cape twice (both times as a skirt), and the capelet was worn twice as well.

What I Would Do Differently (or the Same) Next Month
I guess that title isn't accurate anymore! If I could do January all again, these are the things I would change (or not).
  • I have mixed feelings on this capsule. I loved about half of the content and outfits, but struggled with the rest. I wanted to wear certain items more (like the ribbon skirt) but hadn't put the right mix of tops in. I had tricky colours (olive, red, blue, lavender, cream, brown, grey) that didn't always work together.
  • My shoe mix was good, although the losers quickly revealed themselves to me. Heels....*sigh*...why must they be so beautiful, but so painful?
  • This month felt a little too dark overall. I find myself wanting to do more colour - brights! But maybe that's just the time of the year.
  • I had no Wild Card, which was fine. I did wear a fun dress and shoes for Megan Mae's virtual birthday party, although I didn't count that as an outfit in the capsule.

What is Leaving My Closet
  • The snakeskin wedges: I hadn't worn them in a long time, and although they were fine for short-term wear, they hurt my feet after a few hours. Time to go.
  • The black heeled loafers: Evidence of my former buying patterns! Oh, I don't have a pair like this, and they're a good price. No more. I have black shoes I love that I would rather wear.
  • The black cotton maxi skirt: This month I thrifted a black suede maxi that I love so much more. The cotton skirt also puckered when I washed it. Eh, I just don't love it.
  • The Floating Gold Iceberg capelet: Oh, it's so cute and I love the idea of it - it just doesn't work on me. I've already given it away to a very happy coworker.

What's on the Fence
  • The blue knit skirt: The cut and colour are fabulous, but there is a bit of pilling on the hips. Arg. I loathe cheap fabrics!
  • The cream cowl-necked sweater: It's so boring, but functional. I'm going to look for a nicer cream sweater with a better neckline (I hate turtlenecks or stuff up around my neck).
  • The grey ruffled jacket: I might hang onto it for steampunk looks, but it's not a go-to jacket for versatility. That's a lot of ruffles.
  • The red dress: This ponte material is something I've never liked - it feels like cheap plastic-based fabric (and it is). It's pilling a little under the arms. Great cut and style of dress, though.
These are back in my wardrobe for now, and may be removed after I've "rested" from them.

Looking Forward to Wearing Again
  • The red Adrian Agnes boots. I didn't even wait a day before wearing these in February! They are getting nicely broken in and they are so uber-ly kickass.
  • The olive Wonders Ayers. I loved them so much that when my monster cat ate a strap I ordered another pair! I'm actually quite excited to customize the Vizzini'd pair, so that I'll have two pairs of these fabulously comfy shoes to wear!
  • The Smoking Lily cream metallic moto jacket. Seriously, I feel like I'm from the future when I wear this cool jacket. It's going to get lots of wear in the spring as I start busting out lighter colours.

Some Reflections on the Final Capsule and the Challenge Overall
I feel like I could write a book about this challenge! It's been a fun, frustrating, experience overall, and I know it's changed how I dress and shop and how I view my wardrobe. I'll be doing some more in-depth posts about the Lessons Learned during this year of capsules, but here's a taste of my impressions so far.

It's easier to pick out outfits when you have less clothes. That's kind of a "duh" revelation, but for someone who's always had a big wardrobe (even when I was a teen), that was a nice bonus. Wow, so much easier to get dressed in the morning when everything goes together!

However, it all has to work together! Despite figuring out the "magic" number of shoes required in a month (seven), I'm still working on the right proportion of tops to skirts/bottoms and jackets/cardigans. It definitely varied according to the time of year - I wore a lot more cardigans in the spring/summer and more jackets in the fall/winter.

Part of making everything work together was learning not to just theme it all in colours, but to make sure I had a good grounding of nearly half neutrals in each capsule. This was a revelation to me (all you neutral-lovers are laughing, I hear you!), and my two all-neutral months (June and November) were extremely useful as growth exercises for my style. I learned to use accessories for colour, and to chill and let good textures and patterns do the work of colour. I found that I'd been lazy in letting colour do the work for me, instead of focusing on cut and quality in my items.

My shopping (and you know I have Madd Shopping Skillz, yo) has gotten better overall, in that I'm much pickier about cut, fit and quality, and not as easily swayed by those sirens: colour and labels/brands. I'm shopping second-hand first, locally-made second, and ethically-made third, and that feels good. I love shopping and looking for those unique items, and I'm confident that the newly-introduced "three wears" voting feature will help me weed out any remaining duds from my wardrobe.

Although I was supposed to take the month of January off from shopping (I didn't succeed), I did do a big purge of my closet (to the benefit of my friends and their friends - I love how stuff gets passed on!), and am looking forward to doing another one as I come up to the March change-over of my fall/winter wardrobe to my spring/summer wardrobe. Most of the "on the fence" items noted in previous capsules have been given away over the year, and I'm eyeing some of the items that are harder for me to give away (the shoes!) and thinking about what I want to do with them. Consignment, possibly.

Next weekend, I'll be putting up the poll for Best Wild Card outfit of the year, and then I'll be looking at the as-voted-on favourites and not-so-favourites of the year, both to see what viewers think (as opposed to me, the wearer) and what elements the best and worst have in common. I think it will be an interesting experiment.

As mentioned last month, I think the polls are still open on all the recap posts, so feel free to go back and vote if you missed out the first time around:

Is it really only Tuesday? It feels like it should be Thursday at least!

Today is the second wearing of the black leather skirt, and I must say, some of the honeymoon is over.
I love the cut and duh, it's leather, I love that. However, the leather isn't the nice thick Danier leather; it's quite thin and has a crinkly feel to it. It also gets weird dusty marks on it when I brush up against things, like boxes or desks.

Are you ready to vote?

And to think I wouldn't have realized this with my old pre-challenge methods! I think most of us buy something new, wear it once (maybe right away, maybe not) and then we don't haul it out again for a few months, or even a year or longer? Am I right?

I'm finding out NOW how much of a keeper things are. I like it.

In the process, I'm enjoying revisiting some old favourties, like this awesome David Findlay brown tweed blazer that I featured in February's capsule (recap here).
The silk teal blouse is Smoking Lily and was in March's capsule (recap here). I love the pattern of flies on it! So unexpected.

I also wore these shoes in March's capsule:
You can see a bit of the sparkle in the tweed there
Such a pretty shoe - and comfy too! My rings are hard to see - they're a wooden geometric ball and a bent horsehoe. I know my flower and leaves are only metal, but that's sort of spring-y, isn't it?

Off to my WW meeting!

Blazer (David Findlay, thrifted), blouse (Smoking Lily), skirt (Halogen, thrifted), shoes (Nine West, thrifted), metal flower (gift from Mom), earrings (Plum), horseshoe ring (Club Monaco).

I made it back to the gym today after a week off - it felt good to move and sweat and work my muscles again. I will beat this dratted cold!

Today, I went for comfort and another wear of this black dress.
With purple tights! And brown boots!

The boots are my luscious Mini Babycakes by Fluevog, featured in the October capsule (recap here) in 6 outfits. I do love them.

I already know what I'm going to do with the 3 items that are up for voting so far, but I'm going to save that for the Saturday Reveal where I'll disclose my own vote, the total of Like it/Lose it votes overall (as of that day), and my decision on each item.

No hints! I'll try to remain (more) impartial in the posts so that it's more of a surprise and less influential on the voting.

Thanks for all your comments pro and con each item so far - I'm glad you're all enjoying this! It really is quite amazing how quickly items reveal themselves to you when you're forced to wear them multiple times in a short period - I recommend it if you're a "keep it!" type of person.

The stuff:
I love the necklace - the black dress does give it a great background to show it off.

Dress (Max Studio), tights (Noa Noa), boots (Mini Babycakes, Fluevog), necklace (gift from Mom).

Brown Lace Skirt - Round 1

Time to throw another article of clothing to the wolves! This brown lace skirt has been in my closet since about 2007. It never made it into a capsule last year, so it's getting the same treatment as the new-to-me clothing and shoes: you get to vote!
And yes, I am wearing knee-highs. What of it?
Let's get the non-voting-for things out of the way. The green cardigan and the metallic shoes were seen in the March capsule (recap here), and the mustard ruffled blouse was in the October capsule (recap here).

I am on the lookout for another olive cardigan. This one is a great colour, but the cut leaves much to be desired. The mustard blouse got in the way much as I'd remembered, and I splashed salad dressing on the ruffles. *sigh* Into the wash it goes!

I adore the shoes. They can do no wrong.

But let's move on to the skirt. It's by Planet, a UK brand, purchased new but on deep discount at The Bay department store several years ago, just after I lost all my weight. I think it was around $39.99, but regular price was over $200.00. Planet ain't cheap! It's a lovely thick lace and is fully lined. The back of it flares and dips slightly at the hem - it is very pretty on and sexy when I'm walking (I tell myself).
I last wore it in January 2012, with my granny sweater (another item that didn't make it in any capsules, but that I ended up culling at some point - didn't love it). Before that, I wore it in June 2011 (with shoes that I still have - they'll be up for a vote at some point!), in November 2010 (with some seriously pointy and shiny red boots - consigned them, I think), in September 2010 (I'm showing off the back of the skirt), in February 2009 (dancing like Elaine in "Seinfeld" and wearing my kickass leopard shoes that ALSO did not make it into a capsule, that also will be up for voting - BTW, the text of a really good speech that I wrote is in that post), in December 2009 (with my lovely green tweed jacket and some great shoes that fell apart), and in August 2008 (with turquoise and my old cruise shoes, also long-gone).

So, really, this only makes 8 times worn in 5 years (on the blog). What do you think?

The stuff:
Shoes with bows...divine.

The bling:
Greens, and golds, and ambers, oh my!

I'm hungry (haven't had dinner yet), tired (just home from the gym) and shorn (got my hair cut). I'm outta here!

Cardigan (Kersh), blouse (Gap, thrifted), skirt (Planet), shoes (Jeffrey Campbell), bracelet (consignment), studded ring (JGI, consignment), amber ring (some junky store 10+ years ago), earrings (Plum).

Smoking Lily Bonanza, Voting Verdicts! and Lilac Greyhounds

This is a long weekend in my lovely province of BC (Family Day, a new, invented holiday), so I have Monday off - woo hoo! I started my week off with a bang, and the third wear of my vintage 80s strapless dress:
This was perfect for casual Friday - I felt professional but fun.

This is my Smoking Lily stretch denim jacket, featured in the March 2012 capsule (recap here). I only wore it once that month (I forgot that it only works worn done up), but I have hung onto it because I love the construction and the lovely collar and turquoise cuffs and piping.

This is the third and final wear in a week of my vintage 80s strapless dress - I made it! Since I've made my decision on whether I keep this (more on that shortly), there won't be a vote on this outfit.
I previously wore it here and here.

I did comfy Fluevog flats for my Friday.
I like how the black diamond shape echoes the pattern in the dress. I wore these in the September 2012 capsule five times (recap here). They were as wonderful as I remembered, and perfect for walking to the Smoking Lily store after work.

Jacket (Smoking Lily, consignment), dress (AJ Bari, vintage 80s, thrifted), shoes (Impulse Presence, Fluevogs), earrings (Oscar & Libby's).

The February sample sale at Smoking Lily has been on all weekend! I was excited to get down there and see what goodies I could find. I did really well last year (scoring the Octo-coat), so I was hoping for something equally spectacular.

I was in luck! Holy ship!
I snagged this from someone who was debating the colour - you snooze, you lose! Me? I have no issues with mustard - it's my favourite yellow (and my favourite condiment).

This was $65.00 and fits me perfectly; good bust shirring, a nice shoulder and a bit of elastication in the back for a strong waist. I am really excited to wear it.
 I adore the ship patterns!
So. Cool.

I also bought this Emma top - it's the same cut as my emerald green Emma dress (this one) - for $20.00.
The designs are magnolias and running greyhounds. I wasn't 100% on the colour, but since I'm playing at being a blonde for a while I thought, "Why not?"

I spotted this skirt way up on the wall:
The Smoking Lily store is smaller than my closet - it used to be an elevator! - but the ceiling is over 20 feet high, so you have to look up. This skirt was a one-off sample and was $25.00. No silkscreen, but don't you love the fabric? I am so excited about this one!

I bought one of their sheer wool Ashni scarves for $20.00.
It's so soft and warm, but totally lightweight. It has two colours of safety pins - a little homage to my punk-inspired safety pins that I wore as earrings in the mid-80s.

I have a bit of an obi fetish.
This is one of their silk ones; it was $25.00. The yellow is a brighter lemon, and the silkscreens are fly wings and a cross-hatched pattern (the same one is on my blue corduroy dress).

I also bought more of their underwear, at $10.00 a pair.
Canoes, arrows, flies, stars and feathers. The heart is a silkscreen on vinyl pin - it was $5.00.

After my shopping bonanza, I met up with Elaine for dinner and drinks, and then we went to see "Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel" (linking 'cause I love) at the Victoria Film Festival. It's downloadable on iTunes, and I'd recommend it - what a fascinating view of a strong, opinionated woman who knew style! I didn't know anything about her prior to seeing this - check it out!

On Saturday, L and I went for lunch. I decided to start another round of voting with the lilac greyhound t-shirt.
I'm planning to do a Valentine's week theme this week, with lots of pink, red and lilac. .

I wore the tee V-neck at the front (they're reversible), with my plain stretch grey pencil skirt which was featured in the April 2012 capsule (recap here). Yeah, it's a boring skirt, but even I need a good basic! Maybe I'll replace it if I find a more interesting skirt...hmmm...would you believe I have TWO grey skirts waiting in the wings for their chance to be voted on?

I added a Smoking Lily obi (one of my first ones), and red-y/burgundy tights.
I like how the deeper reds play off the lilac and grey, and go with the colour of the magnolias.

Let's vote! Smoking Lily Lilac Greyhound Tee - Outfit #1:

Smoking Lily Lilac Greyhound Tee

pollcode.com free polls
My awesome Prepare Volunteer Fluevog boots get back into rotation. I wore them a lot (nine times!) back in the December 2012 capsule (recap here).

I dressed for a brisk day - it was clear but cold out.
I wandered around downtown after lunch and did a bit of shopping (I did go back to Smoking Lily to see if they had anything else new that day, but I just got L a t-shirt).

Jacket (Le Chateau, consignment), tee (Smoking Lily), skirt (Plum), boots (Prepare Volunteers, Fluevog), obi (Smoking Lily, consignment).

I found this leather and chain wrist-wrap, made in Los Angeles, at a boutique for $29.00.
It has great weight, and it actually fits my head perfectly, like a headband! I'll probably wear it that way at least once.

I went to Mango's, a little boutique near Smoking Lily, and hit their clearance on tights. They are one of the few places that carries tights that are made in Italy (yay! not China!), so when I find them on sale, it's a major score. All of these were $10-20 a pair (that's half-price! these aren't cheap).
Nude-coloured with chevrons on the left; a Nordic sort of pattern on the right
I have bought both Filodoro (my striped black tights that I am still wearing after 4 years, and these little socklets that I got last summer) and Trasparenze tights (these multi-coloured striped tights) before, and have found the quality to be superb.
Nude back seam and pattern on the left; nude with back seam on the right
I fell in love with the back detail on these ones. Yes, that pattern does go right up to the top! I haven't had Philippe Matignon tights before, so we'll see how those work.

I really stocked up!
On the left, mine are a nude colour (not white!) with pink and blue floral pattern up the back;
on the right, faux stockings and panty
I ended up spending just over $90.00 on all six pairs, but if the quality holds out on them for more than a year, it'll be worth it. I hate cheap tights!

Inigo was fascinated by the shopping bag from Mango's.
"I smell a person."
The owner's daughter decorates all their bags by hand.

I popped into the Hospice Thrift Store on the way home and found a lovely silky cami by Liz Claiborne for only $6.00.
Such a rich colour!

I also found this wonderful steel cuff for $6.00.
The copper pin was from Flavour Upstairs, a thrift/consignment store I check out once in a while. It was $3.00 and I love the retro look of it. I'd guess it's from the 80s.

The cuff is stamped inside:
It says "Lakeland Art Metal Work - Hand Made." I couldn't find anything about Lakeland Art Metal, but I like the cuff.

Okay, now we're on to the Voting Verdicts!

First up: the black Max Studio dress:
I wore it here and here. The votes are:

  • Like it: 140
  • Lose it: 37
It's a landslide! However, the verdict is: Lose it.

I originally had thought that this dress would be a keeper, and for many people it would be. But you know, I was hanging on to this dress for sentimental reasons. I wore it for my 40th birthday party, I bought it when I first lost my 50 lbs, and it's so comfy to just throw on - how could I not keep it? But as many of you pointed out, it's just a black dress, and not entirely flattering in either cut or colour on me. It's also not very versatile; boots and tights, boots and tights. Blah.

So into the giveaway pile it goes! I have no regrets.

Next up: the AJ Bari vintage 80s strapless dress:
It was worn here and here (and above, as noted). The votes are:
  • Like it: 121
  • Lose it: 27
Another strong contender! And the verdict is: Like it.

It's a keeper. I debated when I bought it about getting the zipper fixed and having it taken in, but I'm so glad that I did - I thought hard about it, and I'm glad that my instincts paid off. I am looking forward to mixing it with my spring/summer wardrobe. If I can get 3 good looks in a chilly month like February, I can't wait to wear it in warm weather!

And lastly, the Halogen Black Leather Skirt:
I wore it here and here. The votes are:

  • Like it: 62
  • Lose it: 72

A close vote! The verdict: Lose it.

This one divided voters over the length and simple cut. Some loved it, others - not so much. On my first wear of it, I really liked it, but by the second wear, I started to notice the shoddy quality. The leather is thin and crunchy (not like my lovely buttery-soft Danier leathers), and the hem came unglued. I don't have an issue with the length at all - I like a variety of skirt lengths on me - but it felt cheap.

I hope you enjoyed the first week of "Like it or Lose it" - it was eye-opening for me! I found that my preconceived ideas of what would be keepers (the dress and the skirt) were turned around after wearing the items multiple times. In the past, both of these would have continued to take up valuable closet real estate, but now I feel invigorated by knowing for sure that I'm only keeping what really works for me - in this instance, the 80s strapless dress.

I'm excited to do another outfit with the brown lace skirt and the greyhound tee, and probably a few more items this coming week!

Edit: I just realized this is my 1400th post - woo! Round numbers!

30 For 30 For 12 Challenge - Favourite Wild Card Outfit!

$
0
0
When I started the 30 For 30 For 12 Challenge in February 2012, I gave myself the leeway to have one "Wild Card" outfit per month, so that I could wear whatever I wanted for a special occasion. It was intended as a break from the same old 30 items that were in each month's capsule, and as a chance to show off some of my costume-y outfits and party dresses that might not fit that well into a capsule.

The one-per-month fell quickly by the wayside, but I kept track of all the Wild Cards and wrote about them in the monthly recaps, always saying there would be a vote for Favourite Wild Card at the end of the challenge. Well, here it is!

You can click on the dates to go back to the original posts and see more pictures and details of the outfits. Don't be swayed by the poses in the below pictures - I've chosen what I think are the best pictures overall for this summary. I encourage you to re-visit these posts and really pick the one that is your complete and utter favourite.

Choose carefully! You will only get to pick ONE Wild Card outfit!

1. Floral Festivus
February 11, 2012
I wore this outfit for our "F**k It, It's Festivus" Party in mid-February. The dress only lasted one wearing - I recently gave it away, as I found the print not quite right on me. The hat was custom-made for me by Tierre Joline and its sister also appeared in a Wild Card outfit. Out of 18 Wild Card outfits, 8 of them featured a hat.

2. Avenger at the Art Gallery
March 9, 2012
Doing my best Emma Peele pose! I wore this to an Urbanite event at the Art Gallery the weekend we got the news that Inigo was sick. I also wore this dress only once - I ended up sending it to the lovely Megan Mae (here she is in it). The boots were featured in the first capsule - love them!

3. Steampunk Blue and Black
April 20, 2012
We went to the Victoria Steampunk Expo in late April and had a blast. I put together all of the outfits mostly out of pieces from my closet. I couldn't limit myself to one Wild Card outfit, so this is the month I first went with multiple Wild Cards. I'm going to leave these as separate for voting purposes.

I wore this outfit to an absinthe tasting. Neither the coat nor the blue skirt made it into capsules (the corset top did), but they are still in my closet, so you'll see them at some point and get to vote on them.

4. Steampunk Victorian Ribbons and Ruffles
April 21, 2012
For Day 2 of the Steampunk Expo, including the dance that evening, this ensemble was worn for a total of 12 hours. It was my most elaborate outfit, involving a pulley construction built out of curtain rings and ribbon. The olive maxi skirt, the leather vest and the plaid jacket all made it into future capsules, as did the then-new Fluevog boots.

5. Steampunk Victorian Punk
April 22, 2012
This is the simplest of the three steampunk outfits, but still dramatic with the black accessories. Most of these pieces live in my costume box except for special dress-up times. The boots all appeared in later capsules, as did many of the "normal" clothing items. The blouse has yet to be worn outside of this outfit, so it will appear at some point for voting on its own merits.

6. Spanish Ladies at a Recital
May 16, 2012
I wore this to see my nieces perform in a dance recital up at the University. This is the first time I wore a "normal" dress vs. a dress-up piece or costume for a Wild Card. All of the pieces later appeared in capsules.

7. Tiki Retro-Steampunk
June 3, 2012
I wore this for L's birthday party (theme: "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy") - a mix of a vintage dress, Fluevogs and a steampunk arm bracer.

8. Lettuce and Turquoise
July 29, 2012
I wore this to our friends Greg and Candace's house party - it was perfect for a hot July afternoon. The lettuce dress got an outing (it wasn't ever featured in a capsule) and I got to wear my beloved turquoise Fluevogs again.

9. Satin and Animal Prints
August 4, 2012
I wore this for our friend Nick's birthday party. It was a hot August night, and I'd just thrifted this lovely dress for $18.50 a few days before. These shoes never made it into a capsule - neither did the dress (although it was featured in another Wild Card outfit).

10. Kim Cattrall's Suit
September 26, 2012
The first wear of Kim Cattrall's suit that I'd found on consignment earlier in the month. I wore this out for dinner and drinks with Elaine. This Pink Tartan suit was featured in the November all-neutral capsule. The orange blouse and the Ralph Lauren pumps were featured in previous capsules.

11. Birthday Wine
October 6, 2012
I wore this locally-made (consignment-purchased) Bridget Savard dress for my birthday party - a whole slew of friends, both in real life and in the fashion blogosphere, joined the party! I had fun playing with the unique shape of this dress.

October, November and December were party-heavy for us this year, so I did a bunch of extra Wild Card outfits. Relaxing the "rules" at this point felt right - I don't think I overused the Wild Card as an excuse at any point.

12. Steampunk Vampire Slayer
October  20, 2012
Oh, this was the wildest night of the year, for sure! L and I went to our first Hallowe'en event and I (ahem) overindulged quite a lot. This marks the first time I've worn a wig on the blog. My Fluevog boots are in their third Wild Card outfit, and the steampunk bracer also appears again.

13. Gallery Plaid
November 23, 2012
I wore this to a gallery opening that was mostly in the dark, so it may have not gotten its best viewing in person, but I like it in the pictures. These Fluevog boots also got worn more than once in a Wild Card, as well as being featured in a capsule. This dress didn't make it into a capsule, but it's been a favourite since I first got it.

14. Glamour Girl
November 30, 2012
Another Urbanite event at the Art Gallery - this outfit (maybe it was the boobs?) was a hit with both men and women. Neither the top nor the bottom made it into any capsules, although I've had both for years. The skirt is a one-of-a-kind sample and I adore the brocade. The shoes were featured in the June all-neutral capsule.

15. Company Gown
December 1, 2012
This long brown gown was worn to my company Christmas party - it's dramatic and such an awesome dress on. I've since passed the dress along, since I had several wears out of it pre-blog. This is the sister to the red Tierre Joline hat worn earlier in the year.

16. Brown Satin Redux
December 8, 2012
This brown satin dress is the only (non-accessory) item aside from shoes that made it as a repeat in a Wild Card outfit - I wore this in August as well. It served well as a frame for my vintage necklace and earrings. The blue shoes were featured in one of the previous spring's capsules.

17. Stained Glass
December 15, 2012
This was worn to our friends Nick and Karen's Christmas party, and I went with this statement "stained glass" dress. The black boots were also worn in several Wild Card outfits this year.

Many of my Wild Card outfits have featured obis and my punk cuffs, oddly. I think I have a strong bias to punk/steampunk looks when I dress up!

18. New Year's Eve
December 31, 2012
And the last, but certainly not least Wild Card outfit! I wore this ensemble for New Year's Eve, incorporating a bit of costume and a fair chunk of leather for a bit of a steampunk vibe.

Okay, are you ready? Vote for your favourite - remember, only ONE vote, so pick carefully!

What's your favourite Wild Card outfit of them all?

pollcode.com free polls
I'd also like to hear what you thought of the idea of Wild Cards during this year. Do you think they were useful for me in the capsule challenge overall? Any themes you liked in particular? Disliked? What were your second or third favourites? Least favourite?

Next weekend, I'll be covering the Favourite Outfits of the Year! I'll be revisiting the voting in the recap posts, so now's your chance to go back and vote for your favourites if you haven't already done so! We'll be voting on the top 36 most-liked outfits of the year, based on the top 3 highest votes received in each month.

Pink Velvet for Valentine's

Why is the Tuesday after a long weekend so much like a Monday? Arg. Let's try to buck up and think happy lovey thoughts for the impending V-Day, shall we? I'll be doing a pink-red romantic clothing theme all week to celebrate the love.

Starting with - a new-to-me jacket!
This is my Nougat London jacket that I picked up on consignment back here in January (breaking my shopping ban to salve my stress over Vizzini eating my Fluevogs!) for $28.00. I replaced the grotty-looking buttons with these mismatched silver ones.

The curvy skirt was featured in the December 2012 capsule (recap here) and was a gift from the lovely Megan Mae. I wore it 3 times in December outfits.
I'm wearing the new-to-me Liz Claiborne camisole that I picked up last weekend in the thrift store (it's not up for voting, being a foundation/layering piece). It stayed in place and didn't show too much cleavage, which are my two make or break requirements in a cami.

The shoes are my fabulous Fluevog Sencha Teapots, featured in the March 2012 capsule (recap here) and worn 3 times that month. I can't believe it's been over a year since I've worn them - slipping them on was like saying hello to an old friend.
I wore a pair of my new tights today - one person thought I'd gotten tattoos up the backs of my legs.

Jacket (Nougat London, consignment), cami (Liz Claiborne, thrifted), skirt (Etcetera, gift from Megan Mae), shoes (Sencha Teapots, Fluevog).

Pink, Pearls and Lace With Coffee

Woo! It's Wednesday! And tomorrow is Valentine's Day! I like V-Day: it's a chance to tell people you care about them, and not necessarily a spouse or partner, but family and friends.

I'm showing my romantic side (ha!) in some lace, pearls and pink.
This is my thin pink sweater, featured in the August 2012 capsule (recap here) and my Coffee Kope Tiam booties, featured in the October 2012 capsule (recap here). I wore the sweater twice and the Fluevogs four times.

And...it's time to bust out the brown lace skirt for another round!

Brown Lace Skirt (Planet): Round 2

Edit: Oops, here's the last time I wore it.
It has quite a bit of pink in the brown - you can see a bit of that in the floral pattern in the above picture.
I felt romantic in my pearls, even though my day was crazy.

The stuff:
I did plenty of running around today, and was reminded how darned comfy these booties are.

The necklace was cheapy as is the cuff (which is more pink than that).

Look! My leg is on a table.
New tights - a little bit too "granny tan" maybe, but redeemed by the zig-zag. But they have one huge downside: they reek of perfume! It's the same weird thing I experienced with my olive knee-highs (I mentioned it here). It's like they intended them to be scented. It's not the brand, because I've bought lots of Filodoro (although, wait a minute: "-odoro"?? Fil-odoro? coincidence?).

Sweater (Reitman's, consignment), skirt (Planet), shoes (Coffee Kope Tiam, Fluevog), necklace/earrings (Aldo Accessories), cuff (thrifted), tights (Filodoro).

While I was photographing the stuff and my leg, someone was digging for kitty spaghetti:
"I must have them!"
He is very bad with shoelaces. He eats them - what a shocker! We have to keep them all locked away - as these shoes are now.

Happy Valentine's! Red Dress for Tamera

Happy V-Day, my dear friends, readers and fellow bloggers! You're all special to me and I wish you happiness and joy today and every day!

And now...a red dress.
Accurate colours - it's a RED dress!
I just missed getting this dress into a capsule this past year. It nearly made the December one, but I ended up removing it right at the last minute. So many dresses, so little time!

It is by Calvin Klein and I bought it in December 2011 at Winners for $59.99, and I have only worn it for two outfits (here), both on the same day! One look was casual and one more dressy.
Today, it got the obi treatment. The dress has quite a defined waist but not an actual waist seam, so I like adding a belt to it.

This is my outfit for Tamera, The Menopausal Supermodel's e-Party for her birthday!
I had many compliments on the dress today - it really is that vivid red in the first picture!

What do you think?

L and I decided not to do anything for Valentine's this year - we went to the gym instead! Rather than being weak in the knees for my wonderful husband of nearly 16 years, I am weak in the arms, ha ha!
Blowing a kiss
He surprised me and bought me this gorgeous bouquet of flowers (they are far away from Vizinni!) and some chocolates to have with our wine tonight. Yay!

The stuff:
My lovely red-lined pumps (last seen in the June 2012 capsule, recap here), my Smoking Lily obi and Smoking Lily gold leather anatomical heart pin. I quickly realized that saying, "I've got my heart on" is not appropriate at work (say it out loud!). "I'm wearing my heart" is much better.

I also wore my new gold chain and leather wrist-wrap and my clock-hand earrings.

Here's a look at my tights, which you can see better in the outdoor stair shot:
It's a black lace/fishnet layered over a bright blue. Cool, eh?

Dress (Calvin Klein), shoes (Guess), obi/heart pin (Smoking Lily), earrings (Foxy), wrist-wrap (handmade).

I got a wonderful surprise in the mail today! I ordered one of Megan Mae's gorgeous tie-obis and it came today!
She is so generous - look at the fabulous vintage scarf, and the chainmail purse! Inside the purse where two buttonflowers (I have quite a collection!).

Check out the "lid" of the purse:
I'm not sure if they are bears or some weird people.

The neck of the purse expands!
Wow! That is the coolest thing I've ever seen! I can't wait to wear this next time I go out.

Thank you so much for the wonderful belt and the beautiful gifts, Megan! I love them!

Someone wasn't very happy about me leaving to go to work this morning.
"I hope you remembered to close your closet door."
Happy V-Day!

Happy Saturday! I hope your days are full of sun, wind and lovely strolls (well, that's what mine's been full of!).

To start off, we have the second wearing of this lilac Smoking Lily tee:
I previously wore it here, with the V-neck in front. Although you can't see much of it, this is Outfit #2.

I'm a bit behind on my 3 wears in 7 days, but I do have one more planned outfit for this tee next week.

For Casual Friday, I added my denim maxi skirt and my lavender Camper shoes (both featured in the April 2012 capsule, recap here). They were worn 3 times (the skirt) and 4 times (the shoes), so both are solidly in the "keeper" category for me. The skirt makes a great flapping noise when I walk, like sails.
The purple cardi was featured in the December 2012 capsule (recap here), where it was worn 4 times. I like that it has shorter sleeves.

Although the grey of the greyhounds in the tee isn't visible, I used that neutral to pull all the different shades of purple together, with the wide belt (you know I love a bigass belt!) and the grey legwear.
This skirt makes my bum look good! And these shoes are so easy to walk in.

My legwear is actually socks!
With birds! I've got birds on my legs!

The stuff:
I went out for a wee thrift shop and Thai food for dinner with a fellow fashion-y coworker, so had crappy light by the time I got home. I wore my new-to-me thrifted cuff. I walked home from downtown in these shoes - perfectly comfy!

We didn't have a lot of luck at the thrift store, but did a quick overview/try-on in about an hour. I tried on a wonderful pair of red wool pleated vintage Escada culottes (yes!) for under $20, but they were way too small.

I did find this awesome emerald green glass bangle for $5.00.
It is really small, which works well for me, as I have small wrists - most bangles fall off me.

Cardigan (Kenar, consignment), tee (Smoking Lily), skirt (InWear, consignment), shoes (Camper), belt (Plum), cuff (thrifted).

Today, L and I had eye exams scheduled (we're both getting new glasses!), so we got up early, walked to town and had brunch first. We spent the afternoon looking at frames (with our whacked-out dilated pupils) and narrowing it down - we are both craving something a little less "normal" than what we have now. You might not know, but I had to buy my current glasses due to my previous pair snapping in half about 4 years ago! (tragic tale here). I am super-excited to get my new glasses - I will post a pic of L's too! We should have them this week.

I wore the red dress again.
I last wore it for Valentine's Day, here.

One of the biggest lessons I learned from my capsules was the versatility of dresses. Layering them so that they look like a skirt is a great way to extend the wear out of a dress that you may only think you can wear one way.

I wore my leather shirt over it, this time around, belting the waist. Love that  shirt! It was featured in the very first capsule, in February 2012 (recap here), during which I wore it 4 times. I also wore it for one of my Wild Card outfits, my Steampunk Vampire Slayer outfit (here, in October 2012).
The boots are my flat Aldo riding boots, featured in the December capsule (recap here), where I wore them 6 times. They are wonderful for walking, although getting a little beat up. I would like to replace them with a pair of good Fluevogs...L and I will be doing our annual pilgrimage to the Vancouver Fluevog stores in March!

Shirt (Danier Leather, thrifted), dress (Calvin Klein), boots (Aldo, consignment), tights (Hue), belt (swap from Ruth).

I have another outfit planned for the dress for next week, and then we will be voting next weekend for it, the lilac greyhound tee and the brown lace skirt. So, nothing up today...sorry!

However, speaking of voting and Wild Cards, have you cast your vote for Favourite Wild Card yet? Final results tomorrow, and I'll also be putting up a vote for the top 3 outfits - as voted by you! - from each capsule. Woo!

Vizzini was being really cute this morning.
"Stay home and play with me!"
He's looking at L. Cute-looking, isn't he? All lies. Evil cat lies.

Primary Sunday Colours

Today, I went to the grocery store, then ambled through a few neighbourhoods, down to one of my favourite consignment shops. I felt like being bright! It was so sunny out, that none of my stair shots worked with the sun glaring on me.
This outfit is composed of all existing items in my closet that made it into capsules last year, so no voting on them. The jacket is my trusty yellow leather, and I'm accenting all these primary colours with the lovely vintage scarf that Megan sent me the other day.

This is my outfit for Visible Monday! Head on over to Patti's "Not Dead Yet Style" to check out the other fabulous participants.

This is my Smoking Lily stretchy dress, featured in the May 2012 capsule, recap here. It was just right for trying clothes on. I only wore it twice in May, so it was good to give it another go.
I had to do matching buttonflowers!
The boots were in the January 2013 capsule (recap here). I'm still working on softening them up, so today's 3+ hours in them helped.

Jacket (Danier Leather), dress (Smoking Lily), boots (Adrian Agnes, Fluevog), buttonflowers and scarf (Megan Mae).

I had a pretty good shopping session. I'm finding I'm much more picky about what I buy. If it doesn't fit exactly right or just doesn't ring all my bells, it's a no.

I found this lovely rusty-orange blouse by Mexx for $14.98:
It's perfectly fitted through the body - it will be an excellent layering piece.

I fell in love with this gorgeous wool bustier:
It's by Mondi, is 100% wool and is made in Germany - it was $24.98. The bottom section is a great peplum shape. So looking forward to making some fun outfits out of this!

Favourite Outfits - 1st, 2nd and 3rd

This week, we're going to look at the top 3 favourite outfits from each of the monthly capsules. I've shown them as 1, 2 and 3 (including ties) just for information - you can pick your favourites from ANY of the outfits below!

Just for sh*ts and giggles, I've noted my own personal top 3 favourites after each month, with links. Some of my faves were also your faves, but don't let my preferences influence your votes! (and you can't vote for outfits not pictured below).

I'm making this a write-in vote instead of a poll (Pollcode can't handle that many choices), so please leave a comment with your ranking of 1st, 2nd and 3rd from any of the outfits below.

You can click on the dates below each picture to go to the original posts, where you can find more pictures and details on the outfits.

I'll reveal my personal favourite outfit of the year next weekend.

Whew! That's a lot of outfits! Thank you for all your voting throughout this challenge!

And now...the winner of the favourite Wild Card Outfit is...

It was the winner by a mile, with 20% of the votes!

Runner up was Stained Glass:
It received 15% of the votes.

Third place went to:
Lettuce and Turquoise!

My personal favourite was the Steampunk Victorian Ribbons and Ruffles:
It was such a fun outfit to create, and I had a great time in, partying with other steampunk folks at the Steampunk Convention.

I hope you had fun choosing! Thanks again for following, reading and commenting!

Last Chance for Brown Lace

For a Monday, today was surprisingly mellow - spring must be on the way! I've seen crocuses and the first buds of the daffodils pushing up.

And here we go - the third outfit for the brown lace skirt.
For this outfit, I'm pairing it with the jacket from Kim Cattrall's suit (featured with the skirt in the November 2012 capsule, recap here). I had put aside the brown lace skirt with the intention of having it in the autumn neutral capsule that month, but it got edged out by the brown leather skirt (close in colour, but different shape and texture). I learned my lesson of not having two similar items in a capsule, and thought maybe the skirt would go in December's capsule (nope, not a brown-neutral month) or January's (put my crazy-shaped new-to-me brown skirt in there instead).

The shoes are fabulous - I forgot how much I liked them, since I haven't worn them since waaaay back in February 2012's capsule (recap here, where I wore them four times in a month).
Hee, I look half-asleep there
The green top is from the August 2012 capsule (recap here) - I'm wearing it more as a layering piece here. It's got more weight than a camisole and is a bit warmer. It was chilly out today!
The danged nylons got a run right up the back of the leg today. *sigh* Oh well.

I previously wore the skirt here and here.

The stuff:
The shoes are by Fly London, and are made in Portugal. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for ethically-made shoes - not easy to find!

My new-to-me copper pin that I thrifted for $4.00.
I got the screw-on earrings at a thrift fair back in November - two pairs for $5.00. They are stamped "Lisner" so are likely from the early- to mid-60s.

Blazer (Pink Tartan, consignment), top (Harve Bernard, thrifted), skirt (Planet), shoes (Fly London), pin (thrifted), earrings (vintage, thrifted, Lisner).

I was so excited - a package came in the mail today from the awesome Lynne of The Good Will Hunting Paralegal.
This lovely snakeskin silk scarf is divine - so soft! And such a sweet card. Unfortunately, a little stick-pin with a leaf encased in resin was broken. Aw...Thank you, Lynne! You are so generous!

Second Time for Pink Velvet

Just a reminder to vote for your favourite outfit of the year-long 30 For 30 For 12 Capsule Challenge here, in case you missed it. Please leave a comment with your top 3 faves.

Today's the second time I've worn this pink velvet jacket.
I felt very girly and pink today. I know pink's not everyone's cup of tea (I've loathed it myself for a good portion of my life), but this dusty pink is one of my favourite shades.

I'm wearing the jacket with my ultra-fem floral blouse that appeared in the August 2012 capsule (recap here), along with the purple-y-grey Chie Mihara flats. The blouse was the most-worn top of August, and I wore the shoes 6 times. They were just as comfy today.
The skirt is my navy blue swooshy skirt, and was featured in the July 2012 capsule (recap here). I wore it 3 times then, and I'm sure I'll wear it lots now that it's back in rotation.
I wore another new pair of nylons with patterns up the back. They are pretty groovy.

I last wore this jacket here.

The stuff:
I really adore the shoes. I am slowly coming around to having more flats in my wardrobe. It was certainly nice to not to have to change into my runners to dash out on a mid-day errand today!

A close-up:
The three different buttons that I sewed onto the jacket, a pair of vintage earrings, a cheapy ring, and a vintage brooch of my grandmother's.

I always forget to include my Wendy Brandes* lapis lazuli ring. I'm up to at least 100 wears on it since I bought it a year ago, bringing the cost per wear down to the $3.00 range - I believe in wearing your good stuff! It's worth it!
*linking 'cause I love Wendy and her jewelry

Jacket (Nougat London, consignment), blouse (Esprit, consignment), skirt (Tobias, thrifted), shoes (Chie Mihara), brooch (Pastelli, vintage 60s, Grandma J), ring (Nine West), ring (Wendy Brandes), earrings (thrifted, vintage).

Red Dress Layered

Hey, hey! It's late (worked late, didn't go to gym and am starving), so I'm going to be quick(ish).

The 3rd wear of the red dress:
Lots of texture and pattern going on, starting with the blouse, one of my favourites which was featured in the October capsule (recap here). I wore it three times that month. The shoes are also from the October capsule and were worn 3 times - I often wear them with this blouse. I just like how the colours go.

Last time to voice your opinion!

I previously wore the dress here and here. Tune in this weekend for the final verdict!

These shoes are so comfy, even for a 2"+ heel - very stable for walking around.
Dotty tights (the dots are holes) and the black leather obi tie it all together.
 Funky, man!

The stuff:
Bronze leaf earrings and my spinner ring.

And...dinner time!

Dress (Calvin Klein), blouse (Marcona, thrifted), shoes (Mini QTees, Fluevog), obi (consignment), earrings (Plum), ring (Twang & Pearl).

Holy Ship! Round One

I had major minor annoyances all day, but first, the dress.
Holy ship! Yes, that is what I've dubbed this dress, and Holy ship! it shall be. This is of course, my Smoking Lily ship dress that I purchased a few weeks ago (here) for $65.00. Considering it is handmade here in Victoria, and it's a sample, I am happy with my purchase, ethics-wise.

And...round 1! Shout out to Patti over at Not Dead Yet Style for trying out the Like it/Lose it on a dress! It really works!

However, as noted, I had malfunctions all freakin' day. I note that Megan the Fashionable Bureaucrat also had tights issues today, so there must be something in the air (although I'm on the west coast and she's on the east). First, blew the toes in both both feet in these nude fishnets. Argle-bargle, that makes me furious! Both toes! Massive holes!
While I felt that happening (while walking to work), my slip (a lovely vintage navy blue one) decided it wanted to be at my waist. The blue netting underskirt also wanted to go up there. I kept waiting to get to a light so that I could do some adjusting, but wouldn't ya know it, I hit every green light all the way to work. Why does that never happen when I really want it to?

Once the two layering pieces had ensconced themselves around my midsection, the dress (which is cotton), adhered to my tights and decided to work its way up to my hoo-ha. Crotch-tacular! Didn't help that the bottom button of my coat was open, allowing all the office workers of downtown a view of me desperately trying to hold my dress in place while not spilling coffee down the front of myself.

Naturally, all the layers behaved once I didn't have my bag and coat on.

On the way home, I stopped to get a bottle of wine. No Interac. Arg. Back downtown to another beer and wine store (no, we can't buy beer and wine in the grocery store or 7Eleven here), only to find they were also only able to take cash. I fumed and breathed deeply and headed home. No danged wine. And of course, the dress, slip and underskirt all headed north. Fortunately, L is a kind and generous husband and is going to go buy some wine for tonight, or I'd be a raging basket case (well, more than I already am, heh).

But let's get back to the clothing.
I see a gold bug on the belt!
The underskirt is by Noa Noa and I've had it for a few years. The belt is also by Smoking Lily and I found it in a consignment store for $25.00 a couple of years ago.

The stuff:
The shoes were featured in April 2012's capsule (recap here), where I wore them 4 times. I liked how the purple toned with the mustard of the dress and played off the blues. I repeated the gold moth from the belt in the gold cicada earrings. Although the belt is black, the shoes are purple and the ships/underskirt are navy, they all perceive as dark and worked as neutrals to balance all that mustard.

Dress (Smoking Lily), underskirt (Noa Noa), shoes (Pearl Hart Bellevues, Fluevogs), belt (Smoking Lily, consignment), leather cuff (made in LA, bought local), earrings (Erica Weiner).
