Dec 31st - Outfit #27 & Wild Card #4 - Happy New Year!

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you all had a very safe and fun New Year's Eve!

I've spent today watching an "American Horror Story" marathon (finishing the house one, and getting started on "Asylum") with L, and lounging about, slightly hungover and pretty tired. What a night we had!

But first, the last outfit of both 2012 and the December capsule:
Flash! Aaah!
And my surprise is - I've gone blonde! Well, strawberry blonde, as the red really didn't want to be bleached out of my hair. I've never been blonde; my natural colour is a medium brown, and I've coloured it black, green, purple, teal, burgundy and every shade of red imaginable, but never blonde. And I say, "Why not?!"

I worked on Monday, New Year's Eve day, and I wanted to be comfortable. It was totally dead at work, so I took the Christmas decorations down and cleared up a lot of little fiddly things so that I could hit the ground running for 2013.

Anyway, the outfit. I wanted to get one more wear out of the Kania Goddess wrap (last worn for a theatre outing, here), and this fabulous blue skirt, which was last seen here with sequins (and a blurry kitty).
The teal shirt was rather under-utilized this month, only worn the one previous time, here, with my grey strapless dress. I enjoy the final week of the capsules, as I really get down to the nitty-gritty over what I'm keeping and what I'm not.

The boots, however, are for-sure keepers! I have worn them a ton of times this month, including the last time just a few days ago for my Smoking Lily shopping expedition, here.

It isn't showing in any of the pictures, but I wore the new pendant that L got me for Christmas; I'm also wearing a couple of blue rings.

Jacket (Kania Goddess Wrap, consignment), shirt (Banana Republic, consignment), skirt (Andre Courreges, thrifted), boots (Prepare Volunteers, Fluevog), necklace (gift from L), rings (Scotland souvenir, Wendy Brandes).

After work, I napped for a couple of hours so that I'd be ready to party in the New Year. We met up with 9 friends and had a lovely dinner at Bon Rouge French Bistro (check out the 'Bistro Interior" on the tour*). We have been having NYE dinners/parties with the same group of friends for five years. Check out what I wore in 2008 (my awesome Betsey Johnson dress), 2009 (a thrifted vintage 70s disco dress), 2010 (a blue/grey/black colour-blocked dress from Plum), and 2011 (my stained glass dress and crimped hair!).
*linking 'cause I love Bon Rouge!

But I know you scrolled down to see what I wore for this New Year's Eve, right? I knew it!
It's not entirely what I'd planned, but I was really happy with it!

This is my new-to-me consignment black leather bustier (purchased here on one of our Nerdy Mission photo days). It was $36.00 and is by Northbound Leather, made in Canada - yee haw! It sells for $182.00 on Northbound's website. Score!

I've layered it over top of a floral sheer blouse (worn in March's capsule). I'd meant to wear just the bustier on its own (screw being 45, ha ha!), but the cut of the bustier was too high for the waistline of the skirt and exposed my sides and back. I didn't want to be that exposed!

I actually really liked the romantic vibe with the blouse, especially with the floral necklace (just purchased at She She Shoes the other day, here) tied onto the vintage 80s Le Chateau top hat.
Okay, the skirt. Pretty amazing, am I right? It's by BCBCMaxAzria and was $70.00 on sale on consignment. Worth every penny. I felt wonderful in this all night, and the pewter leather gleamed - so sexy!

My hair's a little rumpled - I just fluffed it up after my nap. Heh.
I can't wait to wear this skirt again!

I had planned to wear the new lavender booties, but had to factor in all the walking that we did over the course of the evening: walked to town to the restaurant, walked from the restaurant to Randall and Yvonne's, walked staggered home at 3:30am. And in the restaurant, no one even noticed the shoes since we were sitting down. But the lavender booties would have been awesome with this!
The bustier does amazing things to the boobular region...
Instead, I wore my Marc Softwalk boots. Stylish, yet walkable. They were in the October capsule.

Stuff shot!
Put up your dukes!
Bronze lacy leaf earrings, a chunky thrifted bracelet, my leather rose cuff, spinner ring and bigass amber stone ring.

I carried my little steampunk leather purse.
I liked the mix of hard and soft elements in this outfit, and it just may be my favourite Wild Card outfit of the month!

Hat (Le Chateau, vintage 80s), necklace worn on hat (Harriet Grey), blouse (Bianca Nygard, consignment), bustier (Northbound Leather, consignment), skirt (BCBGMaxAzria, consignment), boots (Marc Softwalk), purse (Tina of Montreal, thrifted), leather cuff (consignment), pink/metal cuff (vintage), rings (Twang & Pearl, and vintage), earrings (Plum).

I love that L loves to dress up too!
Kitty coming in for a rub...
L has two zoot suits that he got at a crazy store in Seattle a few years ago. This is his blue one - not worn with the vest, but with another shirt that I got him for Christmas. He's wearing an 80s fedora (one of the only things he still has from when I met him!).
"Purr purr, I love you"
He is also wearing the Iggy Idol Fluevogs in dark red. Fabulous!

Thanks for another wonderful evening, love!
You're the best - thanks for always being my "partner in crime."

Someone was not very happy about us going out - again.
I left the round mirror in because you can see me taking Vizzini's picture.
He came down to see me, grouching and merping all the way.
"I give you dagger eyes! How dare you go out!"
He always sits like that, with his little white back feet sticking out at the sides.

He has resigned himself to ringing in the New Year on his own.
"I will eat your shoes while you're out!"
Again, Happy New Year, everyone! Here's to an awesome 2013!

Jan 2nd - Outfit #1 - Layered Leather and the Secret Pose

$

Gah, today felt like a Monday. Everyone seems to be sick or cranky as we enter into January. Me, I'm neither!
Anyway, last capsule of the year, woot woot! In excuse for the massive bunching going on around my middle in the above photo, I'm going to reveal my Secret Posing Tips for Stairs. See how my left hand is on the stair? It is supporting the weight of my entire body! I am barely balancing my bum on the front of the step (note how there is no bum actually on the step). It's sort of a sideways yoga plank position. It really elongates the legs, and the diagonal shape of the pose usually shows off the outfit well.

So there, that's my secret: I'm basically balanced across the front of the stairs.

However, this dress is both short and loose around the waist and the nature of The Pose caused it to go all bunchy. But I'm over it and I'm moving on.

I got this dress on a recent shopping expedition for Christmas presents (here, just past the turquoise dress) for $22.99. It's by Danier Leather and based on the style I think it's probably from the 90s (it has that "Buffy" slip dress look to it). I'd seen a clerk in a store wearing a black leather dress with a shirt and tie under it, then a blazer over it and wanted to try it myself.
The shirt is by Banana Republic and I got it way back in September (here, down past pictures of my closet spring/summer wardrobe changeover) for $18.98 - since I just scoped out BR in the mall recently I know their shirts sell for much more than that! I liked the deep navy of it. I snitched one of L's ties for the day, one with a green and blue pattern to pull the olive green blazer into the overall colour, and wore blue lacy tights.

I'm actually repeating this olive blazer from the March capsule, as I'm at the point where I need basic neutrals in order to make my capsules function properly and I don't see any need to go out and buy new things when I have perfectly good ones already. It's by RW & Co. (a mall store, Canadian chain), but I bought it on consignment.

The shoes are black heeled loafers, which I purchased at Town Shoes (another Canadian chain, mall store) in March 2011. I actually first wore them here for a job interview - and I got the job and am still working there! Must have been the leopard shirt! I haven't worn them much since, just in April 2011 (with a chair skirt) and in November 2011 with some familiar items that were in the October/November capsules.

Having been through nearly 12 months of capsule wardrobes, I think I can safely say, "I have enough black shoes." I am not in love with these, and I don't think they'll be staying in my closet past this capsule - however, let's not be hasty.

The tie:
L usually wears this with a light blue or light green shirt. The pin is from Fairweather circa 1986 - that's some homegrown vintage!

Blazer (RW & Co., consignment), shirt (Banana Republic, consignment), dress (Danier, thrifted), shoes (Kate & Mel), tie (borrowed from L), pin (vintage 80s, Le Chateau).

Jan 3rd - Outfit #2 - Floofy Florals

Woo, it was cold today! Frost on the ground and all the rooftops! We don't get a lot of cold weather up here in the Pacific Northwest (the rest of Canada thinks we're wimps) so as delicate West Coast flowers, when it dips below freezing, we all run for our scarves.
I waited until the very last second this morning before I had to leave to get my stair shot - I will have natural like, darn it!

This is a new-to-me jacket that I picked up back in April (I know! April!) on consignment for $30.00. The brand is notthesame Jeans (the buttons all say NTS). It nearly made it into the neutral November capsule, but then I moved it to January's.

Despite my love for it (ruffles! ties! ruffles!), it's tricky to style. We'll see how it goes. Today, I have a pink cami on underneath it (not part of the capsule).
The skirt is one that I've had for about a year and a half. It's by Bianca Nygard and I thrifted it for $7.50 - I think I've only worn it once, here in June 2011. Check out those pictures, because they show the dramatic slit action much better than today's poses.

Isn't the back of the jacket sweet?
And a leg! I wore rosy/burgundy tights to go with all the purples and pinks and burgundies in the floral necklace.

This is the first wear of the booties I purchased last week here:
They were pretty comfy, although they'll never be an "all day" kind of shoe. I was disappointed that they look grey in the fluorescent lights at work. "No, they're not grey!"

In addition to my floral necklace, I did little vintage purple earrings and a ring that Dad gave me for Christmas in the 80s.
Purple!

Jacket (notthesame Jeans, consignment), skirt (Bianca Nygard, thrifted), shoes (Feud London), necklace (Harriet Grey), earrings (vintage), ring (vintage 80s, gift from Dad).

Weekend! And even though it was a short week, it felt very long.

Here we go - Friday's outfit:
How happy am I to be wearing this gorgeous turquoise suede skirt again? So happy! I got it at the 2011 Vintage Fair for only $10.00 and I've only worn it once (here - don't forget to scroll down for the awesome vintage 70s label!). I'm looking forward to trying some new outfit combos with it this month - you might have noticed that this is basically a re-hash of the original outfit.

Same vest; this dark, stretchy denim piece is by Bisou Bisou and I bought it on consignment back in 2008, making this one of the oldest things in my closet! I don't remember what I paid for it, but it was cheap, under $20, I'm sure.

I first wore it here in August 2008 - I'm amazed that it's the only item of that outfit (including jewelry and the bag) that I still have. The stretch of it is awesome; it really "locks and loads" so I usually wear it as a layering piece to smooth out and define my waist. Check out the previous incarnations: April 2010 (I don't have that skirt anymore as it was see-through, but I still have all the other items), July 2010 with a skirt that Kasmira sent me, September 2010 with my olive suede maxi skirt, June 2011 as an urban cowgirl (I haven't worn that skirt yet this year!), September 2011 (aw, Eyes of Love from Vizzini!), and lastly in November 2011 with my thigh-high boots and a miniskirt.
The cream cowl-necked sweater is by Club Monaco and I got it for "free" on trade-in at a consignment store I don't really go to much anymore - it was marked at $20. It's a wool blend, so although it's thin (I wouldn't ever wear it without something over it, as it's pretty see-through) it's still warm. A good layering basic! I have only worn it once, here in January 2011, right before I started doing this capsule challenge (scroll down for some stuff about me).

Are you staring at my boots? I knew it!
Sweet, aren't they? They are the Agnes Adriana by Fluevogs - I bought them here (scroll way down to the bottom past my crazy costume) for $160.00 on deep discount while I was horridly hungover in October with my niece Zoe (sorry, honey).

Unfortunately, they have two strikes against them: they are really stiff in the ankles (the leather is really thick) and rubbed my poor feet, and they ate about 8 pieces of fringe from the sides of my skirt (it caught on the buckles). I will be putting some softener on them, and will wear some socks next time to alleviate the rubbing. Hopefully they will break in soon, because they are so amazing!

My outerwear:
I couldn't resist wearing the red leather coat that I bought last weekend! It doesn't quite work with the proportions of the skirt, but whatever.

The stuff:
Cowgirl accessories! I love turquoise and red together.

Coat (Danier Leather), vest (Bisou Bisou, consignment), sweater (Club Monaco, consignment), skirt (Pioneer Wear, thrifted), boots (Agnes Adriana, Fluevog), belt/buckle (Shi Studio), earrings/pin (locally-made), ring (gift from Cindy).

L and I slept in after a fun night of playing "Buffy Arkham" (we won!) and went out to our favourite diner for brunch.
I didn't feel like putting together anything too elaborate, since I was only out for a couple of hours. It's "house clothes" for me for the rest of the day (trust me, you don't need to see them!) for warmth and total comfort.

I bought this fabulous dress back in July on a shopping trip with the lovely Lorinda. It's by Planet and was $40 on consignment. It's unlined, so I'm wearing a half slip. Don't you love the draping at the neckline? I intend to wear this belted, and as a top with skirts layered over it, in this capsule. I love dresses with sleeves!
I added some fun tights for pizzazz and the necklace L gave me for Christmas.

I've been saving these boots right to the bitter end - which was hard, because they were a workhorse in my closet from the day I bought them! They are by Gabor and I bought them new in September 2011 (first worn here with a plaid skirt that I didn't keep).

I've worn them several other times: October 2011 with last month's plaid dress, November 2011 (with both a casual work look and a steampunky dress-up look on the same day), again in November 2011 (past the awesome wedding outfit, with my "snowflake" skirt), again in November 2011 (with my fabulous Desigual coat!),  in early December 2011 with a blue Smoking Lily dress (you'll be seeing that one soon!), in late December 2011 (scroll down past my Christmas wear to a truly awful dress that I got rid of), and in January 2012 with a casual look.

I wanted to add some interest with my outerwear:
My gorgeous Obakki coat, a vintage scarf, my red leather Danier bag and my new purple Danier gloves.

Coat (Obakki), dress (Planet, consignment), boots (Gabor), tights (Gap), scarf (Adrienne Vittadini, consignment, vintage 80s), necklace (gift from L), gloves/bag (Danier Leather).

I'm off now to work on the December recap, and yes, Major Awards are coming soon (probably tomorrow). Hope you're having a great weekend!

General Observations on December's Capsule
  • This is the month I blew my rules. Two items in and two (non-like) items out. I needed a black shoe and I loathed the black pants after one wear (even though I forced myself to wear them one more time). I also didn't plan for a cardigan to go over all the shells and sleeveless tops I'd included in a winter capsule. Foolish, foolish Sheila.
  • I loved the colour mix this month. All the purples, blues, teals and burgundys went beautifully with the neutral mix of blacks and greys.
  • I had major shoe issues this month. I never thought it would happen to me but I think I'm going to have to consciously start buying heels under 3 inches going forward. I fear for my feet in super-high heels; I just can't handle the foot pain after wearing higher heels all day (even though I sit for a good portion of my job).
  • My shoe wear this month was very unbalanced due to the aforementioned heel issues. That's going to be a big challenge for me. I love beautiful shoes and the high heels that (often) go with them! Waaa!
  • Only 8 of my items were not thrifted, consignment or gifts, and of the purchased-new items, 5 of them were ethically made (4 pairs of Fluevogs and the Smoking Lily skull skirt). Yay!
  • I didn't have that many outfits overall this month due to holidays, but I totally cheated on multiple Wild Cards - four of them!
What Got Worn the Most/Least

Shoes: As I said, this was really uneven. I wore all four pairs of my highest shoes twice each. The Listen Up Fluevogs killed my feet after a full day's wear - they are going to be special occasion or very rarely worn after this. No way I'm getting rid of them - I might have to build a "shoe museum". Hey, L, do you mind if I take over a wall in our house for a shoe display? Hee hee! (not really, but wouldn't that be fun?). I wore my most comfortable footwear the most - not a surprise! The grey wooly Prepare Volunteer Fluevog boots were worn 9 times, making them the most worn item overall this year in any capsule! They were followed by the black Aldo boots at 6 times and the gorgeous Velazquez Baroque boots at 4 wears.

Skirts: I got very even wear out of all my skirts this month, with all of them being worn 3 times, with the exception of the purple sequinned skirt and the black pleated skirt only being worn twice, and the Smoking Lily chair skirt taking the lead at 4 wearings.

Pants: Oh, I had major pants issues this month. The wide-legged, high-waisted black trousers which looked so good on in the fitting room when I bought them, were completely wrong on my body type. They threw my proportions right off and eliminated the long leg line that I like. Ugh. Despite my misgivings about them, I did manage to wear them twice.

Tops: Four of my original 6 tops were sleeveless. I also shouldn't have counted the black velvet shell as an item (hence its removal) as it's not a piece I would wear on its own. The most-worn item was the red velvet cowl at 4 times, followed by the J. Peterman white blouse and the teal sweater shell, at 3 times each. Least worn was the black velvet shell (before being removed altogether) at once only. The other tops were worn twice each. Aside from shoes, this was the most uneven category.

Sweaters/Cardigans: As I mentioned in the post where I inserted the black drapey cardi into this capsule, I had originally planned for it to be in the December mix, and had removed it at the last minute for the newer acquisition of the Goddess Wrap. Bad move. I needed a black cardi to make all the sleeveless sweaters work - yes, I had two sleeveless sweaters as well as 4 sleeveless tops! What was I thinking with all this sleevelessness? The most worn sweater was the grey sleeveless cowl - it was worn 5 times, and was a great layering piece. Next was the purple cardi and the black drapey cardi at 4 times each. The navy cashmere sweater saw 4 wears, after being neglected in my closet for a few years. The poor little purple sleeveless cashmere sweater was only worn once.

Jackets/Blazers: The surprise A+ jacket this month was the brocade Ricki's jacket, which I wore 4 times. The Kania Goddess Wrap was worn 3 times, followed by the grey Camden Market jacket at two wears.

Dresses: I wore the green swirly dress three times and the grey wool strapless twice.

Other: The vest was worn twice.

What I Would Do Differently (or the Same) Next Month
  • I was mixed on this capsule. On the one hand, I really liked a lot of the items, but there were so many difficulties with others that my overall feeling is negative. Maybe that will change with some perspective.
  • Oh, a better selection of walking shoes and comfortable shoes, for sure! I hope I have that mix right for January! Seven pairs of shoes is definitely my "magic" number. It's a good amount for variety of situations and occasions.
  • I was happy with my assortment of neutrals - about half neutral (which included navy, grey, black and white this month) seems to be about right. I also kept my colours in similar families: reds/burgundys, purples, blue/navy/teal, for the best cohesive colour mixes.
  • I allowed myself a total of four Wild Card outfits for the various parties we went to/held over the month. It was great to be able to let my creativity go for these outfits, and to wear some of my lovely party-only clothes.

What is Leaving My Closet
A lot this month!
  • The London Fog black pleated skirt: I thrifted it for cheap because pleats were trendy. Meh, I don't love it. I have other black skirts I like better.
  • The Banana Republic teal shirt: it's too tight, although I like the colour.
  • The blue sequinned tank: I can't tuck it in due to the thickness of the sequins, making it less versatile than I require in my wardrobe.
  • The sleeveless purple cashmere sweater: I just don't wear it anymore. I'm not keeping it just because it's cashmere.
  • The Kania Goddess Wrap: it's too tight. My girlfriend Vero will rock it!

What's on the Fence
  • The purple cardi: The quality is not that good, but the colour is great.
  • The Camden Market grey jacket: I don't like how it fits, but I love all the details on it.
  • Both pairs of Listen Up shoes: I won't ever get rid of these because they are so beautiful, but as noted, they're going to move up to the "I don't wear them often" section of my shoes.
These are back in my wardrobe for now, and may be removed after I've "rested" from them.

Looking Forward to Wearing Again
  • The Prepare Volunteer grey wooly boots. Wow, I just love these! So comfortable and unusual.
  • The Velazquez Baroque burgundy boots. These are show-stoppers! It killed me, waiting nearly 9 months to wear them after buying them. I can't wait to build some new outfits around them from my full closet!
  • The grey Etcetera tweed skirt. Besides the fact that it fits perfectly and came from one of my favourite bloggers ever, this tulip shapet is so darned flattering on. I felt like a million bucks whenever I wore it.

How I'm Feeling About the Year-Long Challenge So Far
As I get closer to the end (and yo, here we are), I've been reflecting a lot on the Big Lessons that I've been learning from doing this challenge. Some of them are more obvious (eg. you need to have neutrals) and some are not as apparent.

For example, I'm finding that as I get less of a selection of clothes to choose from for a capsule, the harder it is to make a capsule work. This is the same issue I had with the September capsule: I had odds and ends of leftovers that hadn't made it in other capsules, so was left with a bunch of things that didn't really work together. I think I'm getting a glimmer of how frustrating it could be for women who don't have a ginormous closet or collection of clothing. If that small(er) selection of clothes isn't just right, you'd end up being stalled on building outfits due to not having the right proportion of say, shoes or tops.

Another thing I've noticed is that I tend to get excited over unique items when I'm out shopping (eg. the Kania Goddess Wrap and the wide-legged trousers). They look good on, I buy them, and then I find out that they just...don't...work... on me. So, how to overcome this in the future? It's hard to tell when you're in a fitting room whether something's going to work in real life or how it's going to go with the rest of one's wardrobe. I'm pondering a method for immediately weeding out bad purchases like this after the capsule challenge is over.

Although I was sort of dissatisfied overall with this capsule, I am pleased with the shapes of the clothing this month. Nearly everything I had included emphasized the waist (one of my better features) and worked with my body's proportions and shape. I can do pretty much any length of skirt, but need to stick with fitted tops. There are exceptions, of course, like my black drapey cardi, but that's more of a deliberate choice than not being aware of what suits me (hello, swing coats!).

I'm taking the month of January off from shopping for clothing and shoes, and am doing a big purge of my wardrobe (to the delight of my friends and coworkers). Not so much to make room for new purchases, but because - although I still desire to have a big wardrobe - I want to only own items that I love wearing. A lot of the "on the fence" items in my wardrobe from previous capsules have gone to the giveaway pile.

And not to harp on this, but Bella Q's "Walk the Walk: Shop Second-Hand First" has gone into effect. I plan for this to be permanent, not a year-long challenge, but an overall way of life for shopping for myself. Combined with my previously-mentioned method for weeding out bad purchases, I'm hoping to have a really awesome wardrobe full of things I love to wear over time.

And now we're at January, the very last month! I feel a little twinge of panic - "OMG, what am I going to do for outfits now??" Prior to this year-long challenge, I used to build outfits around new and new-to-me items I'd purchased...this ended being a parade of new items, which feeds that "must have something new" urge/pressure that many fashion bloggers feel. I'm wrapping up my 5th year of fashion blogging (I know! Since 2008!) and I do admit that I like having the constraint of a challenge to take some of that pressure off. I'm going to miss this challenge!

I will be doing some very in-depth statistical analysis of my capsules: by outfit, by type of item and by proportions - I've been keeping spreadsheets of my capsules for referring back to, and I do check back on the previous month's votings to see how things are going. There will be more opportunities to vote, on both favourite and least favourite outfits (because it's fun to slag the bad ones, heh heh), as well as the Wild Card outfits. I think the polls are still open on all the recap posts, so feel free to go back and vote if you missed out the first time around:

What About the Wild Card Outfit?
I chose to relax my Wild Card selections again due to party season - I did 4 Wild Card outfits this month! I wore:

  • this long brown gown for my company's Christmas party on Dec 1st (2nd outfit),
  • my brown satin dress with blue suede shoes to show off some of my vintage jewelry for our house Christmas party (here, 2nd outfit),
  • my "stained glass" dress for a friend's Christmas party (here, 2nd outfit), and
  • of course, my New Year's Eve outfit, in which I busted out the leather and a top hat (here, 2nd outfit).
At the end of the challenge year (in January), there will be a vote for Best Wild Card.

I hope you enjoyed seeing my capsule and reading the recap! Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for reading if you made it this far!

Jan 7th - Outfit #5 - Olive, Red and Ribbon

Oh, Monday, you're so cruel. Rainy and gloomy this morning, so no stair picture.

But we make our own sunshine, right?
A bunch of fun stuff here! This is my olive jacket again (already), first worn in the capsule here over my leather dress. I rolled up the sleeves this time to echo the shine of the top.

The skirt is fresh for this capsule, and is a long-time favourite of mine since I found it on consignment in October 2010, first worn here with reds and blacks (and I'm getting my can-can on!). It's by MNG (a branch of Mango) and was $29.99. It's a lovely rustle-y taffeta-like fabric and looks like ribbons of colour. I have always worn it with one of the colours in the ribbons: red, black, burgundy and orange. Not very creative! It was a stretch (a liberating one!) to pair it with olive.

I've also previously worn it thusly: Christmas 2011 was probably the last time, when I packed it as part of my travel capsule to Powell River; in July 2011 (2nd outfit, aw, Vizzini is so little!), in March 2011 (doing a swooshy skirt action shot!), in Feb 2011 (with orange for a change), and in November 2010 (with an ill-fitting red velvet blazer).

What? You're looking at the shoes again?
Well, I know, they are pretty freaking awesome! These are the Wonders Ayers* by Fluevog - the ones that my Winesday girlfriends bought for me for my birthday in October (first swooned over here, but beware of Hallowe'en pictures, ha ha!). They were very comfortable all day - this is a wonderful heel! Despite the slightly pointed toe, there was no pinching. The double ankle straps were very soft and didn't rub at all.
*linking 'cause I love - and they're on sale and they come in lilac!!

The top is new-to-me, handmade (!!) vintage and made of silk shantung. Based on where the boobage shaping is on it, I'd say it's from the early 60s. I probably should have some vintage shape-wear on to get myself in the...er...right position, as it were. Hee! I bought this on sale for $12.99 back here when I was out doing some Christmas shopping last month.
Isn't it a lovely top?
The entire front and back of it it covered in little glass gems held on with little claws (not sewn on like sequins), and based on the fact that they are perfectly lined up in a grid and following the shape of the top, I can only conclude that each one was hand-applied by little elves with hammers when the pieces of the top were cut (before sewing, because this is also fully lined).

The stuff, lined up on my closet shelf the night before, all ready for me to get dressed in the morning:
My coral jewelry and some silver rings.

Jacket (RW & Co., consignment), top (vintage, thrifted), skirt (MNG by Mango, consignment), shoes (Wonders Ayers, Fluevogs), earrings (locally-made), bracelet (Plum), circle ring (Nine West), snake ring (vintage 80s), silver/red ring (Oscar & Libby's).

Bonus cat shot!
My kitty loves me! Of course he's not struggling to get away!
Hope your Monday was fabulous! I'm linking up to Patti's "Visible Monday" at Not Dead Yet Style (last to the party, this week, sorry, Patti!).

Jan 8th - Outfit #6 - Not a Light Bulb

Tonight is my first WW meeting of the New Year - the last two were pre-empted by Christmas and New Year's Eve. I've missed my group - I can't wait to see them again.
A little bit of this and that in today's outfit. My new-to-me handmade vintage blouse (the sleeves are like wings!) that I got here just before Christmas for $25.00. As I mentioned when I bought it, it's likely from the early 60s - the quality is lovely and every detail is just perfect. I did remove the little matching flower (but saved it) that was at the bottom of the V-neck.

I added my mink rose at the neckline. I patted it all day.
The skirt is new, purchased at Dots for $39.99 back in July (here). It's by Belamie and is a thick sweater knit, and reminds me very much of a longer version that I had back in the mid-80s from Fairweather. The previous skirt I owned created the "light bulb effect" (tight around the bum, then pulls in around the legs) which I loathed. I spent a lot of time looking for a sweater skirt that was just right. This one flares slightly at the hem, preventing the dreaded light bulb.
The shoes I've had for many years, purchased in February 2010 (what? that's many years to me!) at Winners for $59.99. They are by Aerosoles, and they're superbly comfortable. They're not all-day shopping shoes by any means, but they're awesome for a day of running around in the office. I first showed them here as one of the pieces of a 10-item wardrobe challenge.

As mentioned, I wore them for the 3rd Wardrobe Challenge (all outfits at that link - that's one of my better wardrobe challenges, I think), as well as in April 2010 (with my silver velvet skirt), July 2010 (with my little grey dress that I just gave away last month), December 2010 (2nd outfit, with jeans and a top I no longer have), April 2011 (2nd outfit, with a cool dress I haven't worn for a long time), and June 2011 (with a bunch of neutrals).

The stuff on a shelf:
Yup, that's stuff.

Blouse (vintage, thrifted), skirt (Belamie), shoes (Aerosoles), belt (Landes, thrifted), mink brooch (consignment), ring (Wendy Brandes), earrings (don't remember), cuff (St. Paul's Cathedral gift shop).

Forgive me for not
- posting promptly when I get home - I'm going to the gym 2-3 days a week with L!
- commenting more on your blogs - see above, time contraints!
- doing the Major Awards - so many good blogs, so little time!

Some days, just getting my post up is an accomplishment.
I'm tired, cranky and just trying to get through this week. Today's outfit was dreamily comfortable, and features all new items. Exciting!

The jacket is my cream metallic Smoking Lily one (linking 'cause I love, and hey, there's my jacket on the main page!), purchased here on their clearance sale, along with this barely-visible moose shirt. The jacket was $91.00 and the top was $44.00. They were both awesome to wear.
I pulled the little bit of turquoise in the cuff of the jacket into all the accessories.

I hope you can see the coolness that is the shape of this skirt. For one, it's a midi and I adore that length. For another, it's actually a bubble hem, and slightly sewn askew which gives it very interesting movement when walking. It's by ISDA & Co. and I bought it at Dots back here (with the blue knit skirt of yesterday) in July. It was $34.99.

I'm wearing my awesome Fluevogs for the second time this week - I wore them on Monday with my ribbon skirt. I just wanted all my pieces to be functional and not rub or pull or bind me anywhere (I'm sore from Monday's workout still).
I like the different look of the shoes with a patterned tight - the double ankle strap is a little less stumpifying of the leggage; in fact, the straps are barely noticeable against the funky tights.

But are those funky tights?
Heck, no! They're only knee-highs! Ha! I do have a full slip (vintage) on underneath this outfit for extra warmth.

Stuff on a shelf:
Many circles of turquoise (and one square).

Jacket and top (Smoking Lily), skirt (ISDA & Co.), shoes (Wonders Ayers, Fluevogs), necklace (thrifted), earrings (Oscar & Libby's), ring (Le Chateau).

Woo, it's Thursday, and I'm taking a long weekend, so I won't be back until Monday. Quelle drag, I know, but you'll manage.
Today is all "fresh" items for this month (well, except for the boots which I wore last weekend here, 2nd outfit).

We start out with the brown skirt, featuring very crazy "long monkey arm pockets" as my co-worker Gord called them.
Blown-out colour so you can see draping and details.
The pockets are on each side, near where my hand is. I got this skirt on my last foray into Oak Bay with Cat back in November (here, scroll down past much wackiness). It's by "Fleur de Mon Secret" (flower of my secret), a very silly name for clothing. It was around $40 and is frankly not worth it. It's not lined and it doesn't have any attention to detail, including the teeny little 4" zipper that I'm supposed to ease over my not-4" hips.
But it has the Vizzini seal of approval!

The jacket is by Le Chateau and is one I coveted on a friend several years ago, then finally spotted on consignment in late January/early February 2011 where I bargained it down from $50 to $40 (because I'm a good customer, and it doesn't hurt to ask). I first wore it here for a one-week wardrobe challenge in Feburay 2011 (there's a good picture there if you scroll down of the embroidery on the front).

Since then, I've worn it in April 2011 (with a full purple skirt), then in November 2011 with a whole lot of orange and some teal, and lastly in December 2011 with the long black skirt from this month's capsule and some boots that I miss (although they killed my feet and were too high).

In summary: this jacket = da bomb.

The green top I'm wearing underneath is new-to-me, thrifted back in September (here, scroll down) for $20.50.
I recently re-watched "Kate and Leopold" on TV and immediately recognized the style as classic 2001. Sleeveless, high-neck, fitted. This is by Danier Leather and it's made in Canada (hooray!).
And it's "leather". Actually, it's "suede" - but I shouldn't be using quote marks. It really is suede.

Stuff on a shelf:
Now with 100% more balled-up tights!

FYI, the "socks" that everyone was exclaiming about yesterday aren't socks. They are knee-high tights aka trouser socks (because knee-highs sound like something your grandma wears). Not socks. Not knit. Tights. Only knee-high. The brand is Sox Trot, but it even says on the packaging "knee highs."

Jacket (Le Chateau, consignment), top (Danier Leather, thrifted), skirt (La Fleur de Mon Secret, consignment), boots (Gabor), wood ring (Dots), amber ring (some junky store), gold hoops (gift from L).

Have a great weekend!

Jan 11th, 12th, 13th & 14th - Outfits #9-12 - Road Trip!

Hey-yo, blogland! Did ya miss me? I was on a road trip - it's the annual jaunt to the bustling seaside town of Powell River! You can check out previous trips to PR here (lots of pictures of Canada beautiful west coast):

I've posted more travel pictures below, but I won't be offended if you just check out my crazy-coloured capsule from the last few days. We drove up-Island on Friday and got back yesterday afternoon. L and I both took today off, and did some chore-ish stuff and went to the gym (I can't lift my arms!).

Here we go! Friday:
I got up at 6:30 to meet L for breakfast before our 3-4 drive. Long trips mean a good breakfast!

This is my red dress, last seen here (2nd outfit) on a casual weekend. I'm wearing a vintage slip under this for extra warmth - we had a very chilly weekend! The dress is layered under this fabulously thick 70s vintage suede vest. I got the vest on consignment in May 2010 for $30, marked down from $49; however, it has the telltale red slash that means someone purchased it (probably for around $20) at Women in Need (WIN), as they do that on all their clothes. It has tags, but no actual brand on it anywhere.

I've only worn this vest twice before: when I first got it in May 2010, with a floral blouse and jeans and in August 2011 (3rd outfit), where I wore a striped top and jeans (and some crazyass shoes, check 'em out).
Stripey tights help tie the red and purple together, but I would have done this combo anyway. I love red and purple together. Those are my studded purple combat boots - I've decided I prefer them worn laced all the way up, a la Doc Martens.

I bought them at Winners back in November 2010 (there's a shot of them here in my shopping cart; that post is all about how I shop at Winners, if you want some tips!). I think they were around $39.99. They aren't leather, they aren't good quality, but I like them, and I'll wear them until they fall apart. The brand is Penny Loves Kenny.

I've also worn them thusly: laced all the way up in Nov 2010 (to go see Metric in concert, in a very casual layered t-shirt look and jeans); in Dec 2010 unlaced to show off the stud detail, to yet another concert (Leonard Cohen), in a very half-assed outfit (2nd outfit); the very next day in Dec 2010 to work, trying to get them to look better (they flopped around a lot, so I laced them back up for dinner later that night); yet again in Dec 2010 with a dress that was cool, but I really didn't like that much (I laced them partway up and wrapped the excess lacing around the lower leg); not again until March 2011, all laced up to celebrate my new (and still current) job with my fabulous Desigual jacket; and lastly in January 2012 with another ultra-casual outfit for a moving day Friday at work (boots worn unlaced). Aw, the pic of my kitties there makes me sad...we still had Inigo a year ago.

But let's move on! This is the outerwear ensemble I wore all weekend:
Coat: warm and light. Hat: functional but still cute. Fur scarf: warm and can be worn in the house without me seeming to make a comment on how freaking cold my in-laws keep their house. Fingerless gloves: same. Purple leather gloves: pure fashion. Red purse: holds a lot, is awesome.

On Saturday, we met up with our friend Kelly for brunch at a diner (yum!). I changed up my red dress by layering the black maxi skirt over it:
My in-laws' whole house is painted this awful mint-green colour (*barf*)
I last wore the maxi skirt here with floofy florals. I swapped out the striped tights for grey ones, and put one of my Smoking Lily obis over the waistband. I wore the combat boots, but only when I was out of the house.

I had to cheat on the Sunday picture, because after getting up at 7:15am to catch the ferry back to Vancouver Island, then driving for another 3-4 hours to get home to Victoria, AND after wearing the same clothes for 3 days straight, I took everything off as soon as I got home and washed them (not the vest, but the tights, slip, dress and skirt).

So I took this picture today/Monday:
Back to striped tights (combat boots not shown), and layered the vest over the dress, which was in turn layered under the skirt. I'm so clever!

Here's how I built my mini-capsule:
The four main pieces that I wore variations on every day.

The accessories:
Grey tights, striped tights, the obi, a pair of ginormous over-the-knee socks (I wore them whenever I was in the house (see note above re: "fricking freezing"). I wore the leather cuff, the octo-necklace and the hoop earrings every day.

Dress (Planet, consignment), vest (no name, 70s vintage, consignment), skirt (Bianca Nygard, thrifted), boots (Penny Loves Kenny), obi (Smoking Lily).

Today, L and I went for brunch, then traveled around, doing various things (buying him a guitar, spending a $50 gift card at Costco, exchanging a video game, buying a mattress pad for our bed - isn't my life exciting?).

I needed to get another easy wear (not much walking) in of these wonderful red boots. They are quite stiff, so need lots of little outings to help soften them. I last wore them here with my turquoise fringed skirt.
I had fun in this outfit, so this is my entry for Patti's "Visible Monday" at Not Dead Yet Style - get over there if you haven't been yet!

The sweater was last layered here, in the same outfit as the boots.
This time it gets layered under my black leather "Buffy" dress (this is such a 90s look), last worn here with a shirt and tie.

Added a little leg fun with my textured grey tights.

For outerwear, I just threw on my new red leather jacket:
A pair of grey fingerless gloves and I was done.

Dress (Danier Leather, vintage 90s, thrifted), sweater (Club Monaco, consignment), boots (Adriana Agnes, Fluevogs), coat (Danier Leather).

And now can stop reading if you're not interested in my travel pictures. But I'm going on a road trip, and you're invited!

As I've mentioned previously in my road trip posts, I live on a big island. It takes a while to get anywhere! The first leg of the trip is up the Malahat:

L and I were worried about the weather advisory for snow this weekend, so we rented some big SUV. It was way more comfy than our Miata for a long drive, but I wouldn't trade our little whizz-car for an SUV.

Looking south, back towards the lower island/Victoria:
This is as we're zooming past the look-out (for tourists, not us locals). We're up very high, and past that railing is a long drop down to an inlet of the ocean.

A shot across the inlet, towards Saanich (a municipality) and Sidney (a little town). If you ever come here from Vancouver, over there is where the ferries come in.
For some reason, it was a lot harder to take pictures out the window of the SUV than our car. Most of my pics were pretty blurry.

At the end of the Malahat (we're higher above sea-level), and looking north towards Duncan:
Snow on the mountains!

Passing the Somenos Marsh, a bird sanctuary just outside of Duncan:
We had good weather for the whole trip. No snow.

Turning to avoid going into Nanaimo:
See that logging truck? Those are all over the roads - and they are scary to be driving near!

Hitting the straight "new" highway north of Nanaimo
The centre of Vancouver Island is a spine of mountains - there are some beautiful parks, skiing and other outdoorsy things to do there. I wouldn't know. Never been there.

At a spot where we can look east:
That's Pacific Ocean, and one of the many islands that dot the coast between Vancouver Island (where we are) and the mainland (where, confusingly, Vancouver the city is). The mountains way in the distance are on the mainland of BC (British Columbia, my province).

Looking north again.
It was such a beautiful, crisp day. We saw tons of bald eagles, ravens and other raptors looking for lunch (I also saw some bunnies).

I didn't take any pics of the ferry docks this time, as we were tired and napped in the car. This is looking back at Vancouver Island from the back window of a pub in Powell River.
The long low island is Texada Island - that's the little bitty Texada Island ferry. There were a few sailboats out too.

The sun was just coming up as the ferry pulled out from the docks on Sunday morning.
You can see the reflection of L, his coffee and his breakfast plate.

Looking further north as we pulled out (so to the left of the above picture), is more of the BC coastline.
Those puffs of smoke? A pulp and paper mill. Powell River is a logging/mill town. Maybe your paper comes from there!

Driving down-Island:
This is near Nanaimo. The very farthest bit of land you can see is still not all the way to Victoria. *sigh* It's always so long coming home.

No trip is complete without the Gnome With the Biggest Hands Ever!
And he is a giant gnome! What an oxymoron!
You know what they say about a gnome with big hands, ladies.*

It started getting yucky as we climbed the Malahat:
All that white stuff on the sides of the rocks is ice. It looked really cool.

Nearly home!
We're heading down now, getting near to Goldstream National Park.

This is going through Goldstream. We saw a lot of eagles here!
So green! All the tree branches were covered in moss.

Hope you enjoyed my trip! Ah, back to work tomorrow.

Jan 15th - Outfit #13 - Cape as Skirt

Only a few "fresh" items left this month - and it feels like this month is just flying by! Where does the time go?

But let's get right to it.
I adore pink/burgundy and shades of green. Adore. And if you've ever been afraid to mix green or olive with colour, just think of flowers - they all have greenery and you don't see clashing flowers, do you?

This is my olive jacket, really getting a workout this month so far - I last wore it here with more olive and reds.

The skirt is actually a Smoking Lily consignment purchase from sometime last spring (I know I bought it at My Sister's Closet for around $24.00). I have another Smoking Lily cape (thrifted for cheap) that I haven't worn yet in a capsule - this one.
See the sprig of grass silkscreened on the side?
I have a standing order from all of my friends to just buy these whenever I find them and my friends pay me back. I'm so fortunate that my waist is the right size for the neckline! They are called the Cape of Good Hope (linking 'cause I love), and are $98.00 regular price.

This one has a burgundy satin lining. So sweet.
The shoes are my olive Wonders Ayers (again, last seen here just last week with my metallic moto jacket).

I'm wearing a burgundy cami under the jacket (not part of the capsule), and an old brown belt to hold a strong waist silhouette. I read in InStyle that A-line skirt shapes are big for spring - does this count, do you think?

Stuff on a shelf!
Laying my stuff out the night before really helps speed the dressing process in the mornings, right down to my pink lacy tights!

Off to my WW meeting!

Jacket (RW & Co., consignment), cami (Jackpot), skirt/cape (Smoking Lily, consignment), shoes (Wonders Ayers, Fluevogs), belt and earrings (Plum), necklace (vintage), flower (Roberta's Hats).

Oh, I'm tired. L and I both worked late (till after 6pm - I usually work to 4:30pm) to get caught up on stuff, then we walked home together (aw), then we went to the gym! It's past 8 now, and we haven't had dinner yet. Ah, life.

But the outfit! We must look at it.
It's gradually getting lighter in the mornings - spring will be here...soon!

This is my lovely ultra-ruffly jacket (last seen here with some floofy florals) and my black boots again (last worn here, and getting the Vizzini seal of approval).

The dress underneath is a "fresh" item this month; it's a navy corduroy Smoking Lily dress.
I last wore it here (2nd outfit) in December 2011 for one of Megan and Keely's challenges (and worn with these same boots!). It's a very fine cotton corduroy in a deep navy blue.

I bought it on consignment in September 2011 for $49.99, which is a bit pricey, but I'm sure it sold for well over $200 new. It's a sleeveless dress - check out the pictures here when I first wore it, including the slight bustle at the back and the big screenprint flower on the lower back area. It has a ruffle around the neckline - lots of ruffles is a good thing!
It's a very slight mullet on the bottom hem. I wore a vintage half-slip under it to keep it from sticking to my light grey patterned tights, but I've also worn it with a blue vintage slip and a blue netting underskirt.

Off to make dinner - I'm famished!

Jacket (Not the Same Jeans, consignment), dress (Smoking Lily, consignment), boots (Gabor), ring (Wendy Brandes).

Jan 17th - Outfit #15 - Happy Birthday, Megan!

Happy Birthday to my dear blog little sis, Megan of MMD! We've been blog-friends for over 2 years (that's about 10 years in real time), and I wish you a very happy day and lots of presents. I barely managed to get a dress on for your celebration - I've been so busy lately...but that's no excuse! Pictures of my party attire are at the end of today's entry...it ain't pretty...you know every party has one of "those" people there! Hee hee!

First, the outfit:
This features the last "fresh" item in the January capsule, the Floating Gold Iceberg capelet that I purchased back here (way down at the bottom). It was $34.00 and it's locally made and ethically-produced. I love supporting my local designers!

I wasn't 100% sold on it, but I got a lot of compliments from women at my work about it. It did keep me nice and snuggly warm all day - I can see it being a good layering piece over a solid like a dress (I'll have to try that). I was also able to loop it twice around my neck instead of wearing a scarf with my outerwear today. Versatile!
The sweater underneath is my cream cowl-necked one, last seen here, layered under my leather dress. It's a good layering piece, but I don't love it. It's also a bit see-through, which necessitated wearing a slip underneath my outfit (you can see a bit of the white peeking out in the first picture of this post).

The skirt is the blue knit one I last wore with my butterfly-sleeved blouse (here) and the same tights. I'm going to be very sad when these tights blow a hole! I've had them for a few years!
The booties were last worn here, with my maxi skirt and floofy florals. They were much more comfortable this time (they rubbed a bit on one ankle last time).

And because I'm a drama queen...
STOP - DRAMA POSE!

The stuff - on a shelf!
I nestled the purple and gold necklace in the cowl of my sweater to distract from the large expanse of chestal region on display.

Capelet (Floating Gold Iceberg), sweater (Club Monaco, consignment), skirt (Belamie), shoes (Feud), necklace (I made it; the purple beads are my great-grandmother's), earrings (Plum), bracelet (Club Monaco).

Vizzini was making a nuisance of himself last night while I was outfit-planning, so I hoisted him up onto the shelf where my stuff is in the above picture:
"I'm a cat on a mo-fo shelf!"
I think he wanted to go up higher.
"I go up there and bite all the things!"
He's so cute when he's up to no good.
"I bite the camera string!"

Now, here we go: MEGAN'S BIRTHDAY PARTY!

Woo woo! I gots my martini, and I put on my purty dress!
"Whassat? The dress is by Desigual and the shoes are Vivienne Westwood - only the best for my Megan-sis!"
An' my purty shoes - look, they're so shiny! An' I gots my martini! An' I made balloons and they are green and made me a lil' dizzy! An' I have a lampshade on! An' I got... a martini!

An' look, here's a pretty little kitty...
Hello, little kitty! Do you like balloons?

Happy Birthday, Megan! I promise no lampshades, balloons or martini glasses were harmed during these photos!

Hey! It's the weekend - and what a weekend it's been so far. L and I are watching the NFL playoffs, so I'm trying to squeeze in writing this post while watching those.

But let's back it up a big. Here's Friday's outfit.

I liked the casual vibe of this outfit. My purple suede vest makes an appearance for work (last seen here on our road trip last weekend), layered over my blue button-down shirt (last worn here on day 1 of this month's capsule).

My stretchy long bubble skirt helped balance out the length of the vest:
It was super comfy all day for running around (I do a lot of running around at my job!), as were the purple combat boots (also last worn for travel the previous weekend).

I layered my bright floral tights for some colour on the bottom.
I met up with Elaine after work for a bit of a look-around at a thrift shop, and while I was showing her the tights, a passing lady said, "I love your tights!"

I wore my Grandma J's full set of copper jewelry (picture here) with this outfit.

I went a little overboard with the colour in my outerwear:
My vivid red leather coat, complete with purple gloves and dead Elmo toque (hee).

Vest (no label, vintage 70s, consignment), shirt (Banana Republic, consignment), skirt (ISDA & Co.), boots (Penny Loves Kenny), tights (Look of London), coat/hat/gloves (Danier Leather).

Yeah, you read that right, I went shopping after work. So much for my "no buy January" - however, I only spent a little and I agonized over the purchase for a good 20 minutes. But check it out!
Squee! Cutest strapless dress ever! Don't you love the Aztec-ish fabric? It's a gorgeous thick cotton, and the black banding on the hem and bust help keep all that colour reined in. It's a beautiful fit.

It also has a black polka-dotted net crinoline underneath:
Love!

I know it's from the 80s because of the size:
Not a size 14 nowadays, that's for sure!

It was sold at Neiman Marcus in the US, obviously.
The actual brand is A.J. Bari (about it here and the designer Kay Unger here).

The reason for my hesitation: the zipper is broken...and the dress is about an inch too big in the top on me. However, it was only $10.00! So for that, I'm going to do the unthinkable (for me) and actually take it to a tailor for a new zipper and have it taken in an inch or so. Totally worth it, don't you think?

Anyway, I was out late with Elaine, shopping and having dinner. L was out with some coworkers right after work, and so Vizzini got his dinner late. Uh oh.
"You deserve what you get when you keep me waiting."
You know, if you leave a cranky cat alone for a few hours before he gets fed, AND you leave your closet door open...whose fault is it when something bad happens?

Something VERY bad.
These are my new Wonders Ayers Fluevogs. The ones my girlfriends bought me for my birthday. And there is a strap missing, 6 inches chewed off. NOOOOOOOOOO!

I didn't discover this until Saturday morning when I went to get dressed. I was furious. I threw my shoes at the cat. I steamed for about 2 hours, then figured out what to do. I've ordered another pair (and I included my pitiful story in the comment box when I ordered) from Fluevog. I'm going to take my deformed shoe to a cobbler and have them remove the extra buckle and trim up the edges on the above shoe, and do a match removal on the intact shoe.

Because there are two sets of straps on the Wonders, you can actually connect the lower strap to the upper buckle and they are still wearable. I'm going to get some shoe dye and customize my Fluevogs! I'm actually kind of excited about it! I'm makin' lemonade out of these lemons.

And I'm never, ever, leaving my closet door open again. That was my own fault.

So I wore my shoes on Saturday...because I need this pair in my capsule! I have a lot of olive green and don't have another pair of shoes that I want to sub in for these.
It was a lovely sunny day and I was determined to put my best foot (the one with the uneaten shoe!) forward.

This is my Smoking Lily moose shirt (last barely seen here layered under my metallic moto jacket). I'm also wearing my funky brown skirt with the asymmetrical hem.
I really love how this flaps around when I walk. Such a cool shape. I last wore it here with embroidery and suede.

And the one strap is barely noticeable, especially over my green knee-high tights (vintage half-slip on under the skirt for warmth.
Looking majorly unimpressed there. I wore my black leather jacket for most of the day. Since I'd already broken my shopping ban, and I was still traumatized by The Shoe Incident I indulged in a little retail therapy after lunch (pictures below).

After shopping, I made ambrosia dessert, inspired by these awesome 70s vintage Weight Watchers recipe cards that L reminded me about this week. My Winesday women and I were killing ourselves over them - so funny! And ambrosia's such a classic 70s dessert. It was delicious!

Winesday was much-needed and I entertained my gals with my sad tale of shoe woe. I rejigged my outfit slightly since I walked to Winesday, adding one of my layering tees (not part of the capsule) and changing into my black boots for walking.
I last wore the boots here with a whole lot of ruffles.

Top (Majestic, swap from Caro), boots (Gabor).

Here's my shopping haul. It was nice to have the shopping gods balance out the loss of my shoes with some really good deals.

First up, I've been looking for the perfect vintage cape for a couple of years. I found it at the Hospice Thrift Boutique (linking because I love and it's a great cause. The volunteer ladies there are awesome). Oooh, vintage leather coming up for sale, and 50% off pink tags!
Wow. It's a thick emerald green (this year's colour!), nearly full length. It's got my required arm slits, and I can still wear a bag over my shoulder. With many capes that I've tried on and looked at, you have to carry a bag, old-style, in your hands. I need my hands free when I'm walking, so it's been tricky finding one that will work with my purses.

In addition to the lovely big collar, it has a hood!
Bonus! Since it often rains here, that will be very handy.

It's made in England by Raymond of London:
It's not lined, but it's beautifully sewn inside and out.

Best of all?
Score! Only $24.00 - such a steal!

The Hospice Boutique is having a blowout sale, clearing room for all the new donations. I found this gorgeous 100% wool vintage skirt on the sale rack:
...for $4.00! It's nearly a circle skirt - very much that Dior shape of the 40s-50s that the 80s looked to for inspiration. It has deep slash pockets too. Hurray for pockets!

It's snug in the waist, but it's definitely 80s with the sizing.
Made in Canada! Yay!

I also found another black skirt; in fact, another black leather skirt. This brings me to 3 - I may have a problem with black skirts, but I'm giving one to a girlfriend. Two isn't that bad, right? Heh.
This is a calf-length and it's a gorgeous pencil shape on. I like the uneven block pattern of it.

The brand is Halogen, which is apparently sold at Nordstrom in the US.
Modern sizing, but this is probably 6-7 years old - it's been broken in nicely by its previous owner. Nordstrom has a shorter leather/ponte skirt on sale on its website for $151 Canadian (regular $236), so I'd guess this skirt was over $200 new. I got it for half off the original thrift price for $20! Score!

At the same store, I also snagged this beautiful dove-grey pencil skirt off the clearance rack:
It will be awesome for spring/summer!

It's by Bianca, and it's vintage - I'd guess 80s again. I wore a lot of pencil skirts in the 80s - they balanced out the massive shoulder pads!
It's pure wool, which I love in a lightweight weave like this. Wool breathes so nicely.

Did I score?
Of course! $2.00!

At another consignment store, Rich Rags, I found this lovely top.
I adore the corset-y styling - it has a hidden zipper up the side so you don't have to deal with all the little buttons. The lace is backed so that it's not see-through. It was $15.

This will be nice in spring/summer as well as in steampunk outfits as a layering piece. I am gradually working towards buying dressier camisole-type pieces, either in cottons/stiffer shirt fabrics or thin sweater-y fabrics, to replace some of my cheap camis. They just look classier to me than crappy t-shirt fabric camis (although those are still handy!).

At The Velvet Crease, I fell in love with this dusty pink velvet blazer:
The ruching is so insanely flattering on this! It's a gorgeous fit. It was sized 2, but it's that crazy odd sizing where that's actually equivalent to a Medium (1 = Small, etc.). It's by Nougat of London and it was $28.00.

The silver buttons are not original to the jacket:
I replaced the original buttons (which I thought were tacky) with these three - they are odds and ends of buttons from the extras that I've saved over the years from jackets and things.

See?
Iridescent sequins. Yuck - too mermaid for my taste. I first tried to remove the sequins from the velvet buttons, but it looked a little ragged and the velvet was torn on one of the buttons so I just gave up and put new buttons on.

And that was my weekend! How was yours? Did your cat (or dog) eat anything you value?

Only one more week of capsules after this one! I want to get all my favourites worn again! Today, I went with two favourites.
This jacket is just so beautiful. Every time I wear it, I get compliments, and today was no exception. I last wore it here with an asymmetrical skirt. I layered a purple cami (not part of the capsule) underneath it to pull out more of the bright colours in the embroidery.

Speaking of bright colours, who doesn't love this glorious turquoise suede skirt? Answer: no one.
I last wore it here in a cowgirlish ensemble. It's quite noisy when I walk, like the sound of those rain sticks.

The belt is a vintage one I thrifted several months ago. I kept all the accessories to a dull roar so as not to overshadow all the colour and pattern. My simple black boots were just right, and they're getting a lot of wear this month (including last just this weekend, here, last outfit).

It was clear, sunny and cold today, so I decided to break in my new cape:
I kind of look like a big green Grimace (image links).
Pros of a cape:

  • Completely awesome.
  • Hide things under it.
  • Comfortable, like a warm tent.
  • Completely awesome.

Cons of wearing a cape:

  • Appear to be deformed due to bag over the shoulder.
  • Coffee becomes more spilly.
  • People stare at you.
  • Can't sit in cars (capes were totally not made for seatbelts).
  • Store clerks think you're shoplifting under there.
Summary: good for walking if you don't carry much. Don't wear it if you need to be functional. I did enjoy wearing it, but I did feel VERY visible in it. So this is my outfit for Patti's "Visible Monday" at Not Dead Yet Style - hie thee to her site! (Additional con: you want to speak in Shakespearean English, verily!).

Cape (Raymond of London, vintage, thrifted), jacket (Le Chateau, consignment), cami (InWear), skirt (Pioneer Wear, vintage, thrifted), boots (Gabor), belt (vintage, thrifted).

For those of you who wondered what punishment Vizzini got for destroying my Fluevogs, he got nothing. Cats don't get the "why" when you're mad; they don't understand that whole cause and effect, especially well after the fact (I'm pretty sure he chewed them up on Friday night). He was just being himself (bitey and eat-y) and it was my own damned fault for leaving the closet door open. And the shoes...they're just things (even though they are very pretty, very expensive things). Vizzini's our family, and I wouldn't trade him for all the Fluevogs in the world (but don't tempt me).

Hello, fellow space travelers! Today I was asked at least 3 times by people, "Where's your space ship?"
Funny, they didn't ask that last time I wore this nearly exact outfit! Same jacket, same skirt - different shoes, different tights, and different accessories.

That link is the last time I wore this jacket. For this outfit, I zipped it right up to the top and snapped the snap. If I had a Starfleet insignia, I would have worn it! I am actually wearing the moose top underneath this ensemble for warmth, but I'm not going to count it as a wear for this since it was never visible.

I last wore this skirt on Friday (here) with my purple combat boots.
I added my black heeled loafers, which I've only worn once this month, here in the first outfit. I'm not in love with them, so they're not going to stay in my closet after this month - a classic example of a shoe that was on sale that was sort of okay.

I matched the cuff material in the jacket to this fabulous Smoking Lily obi. I picked up the leaf pattern in it by wearing leaf earrings, and played with the bronze of the earrings in doing bronze textured tights.

I just realized that this outfit is a total anomaly for me: not a single piece of it is second-hand or thrifted. Shocking!

Off to my WW meeting!

Jacket (Smoking Lily), skirt (ISDA & Co.), shoes (Kate & Mel), obi (Smoking Lily), earrings (Plum).

Whew, this is a long week! This is the first 5-day week I've work since the week of Dec 10th, and I'm really feeling it. Also, sore legs from the gym!

Onto today's not-so-creative outfit.
I say not-so-creative because it's basically a repeat of this outfit (where I last wore this vintage top) with a different skirt (I need to wear that one again!). However, I changed up the accessories (I'm clever that way) and I think it looks substantially different, at least enough different that no one said, "Oh, you're wearing that again."

By the way, the answer to "Where's your space ship?" from yesterday's outfit is a finger gun and "Set phaser to stun!" Hee.

Outfit! Break it down!
The workhorse olive jacket was last worn here with my cape as a skirt; the skirt was last worn here with the cream cowl and capelet, and I last wore my cat-ravaged Fluevogs on the weekend (2nd outfit) with my moose shirt. I was lazy and wore the same tights as yesterday.

A close-up of my grandmother's vintage "lemon-lime" brooch and clip-on earrings:
You can also see the little crystals that are attached to the blouse with prongs. So much effort it must have been to put those on by hand!

I hope you're all having a good Wednesday - it's all downhill from here!

Jacket (RW & Co., consignment), top (vintage, thrifted), skirt (Belamie), shoes (Wonders Ayers, Fluevog), brooch/earrings (vintage, Grandma J's).

Jan 24th - Outfit #22 - Sleeveless in Winter

Oh, Friday, will you ever be here? I need my wine!

Today, I went sleeveless! Oh, how daring! How brave! How cold!
Yes, no sleeves, even though it is January! I have been feeling so good about going to the gym! I feel strong and I like seeing muscles starting to appear (no worries, I won't be one of those odd-looking uber-muscly ladies!). Anyway, my company had its branch quarterly meeting today and I always do the sign-in and draw tickets (because I know everyone), and I felt good showing a little upper arm.

Not bad for a 45-year-old broad!

Anyway, let's move on - what am I wearing? It's my Smoking Lily navy corduroy dress (last seen here with some major ruffles), with my forest green Danier Leather suede top over it. I last wore the top here, underneath my embroidered velvet blazer.
I wore a full vintage navy slip under this. You can see bits of it peeking out at the front - I like my slip to show a bit. I think it's pretty.

Bizarrely (or not) in both of those past wears of these items, I wore these same boots! Maybe it's just because these are the most comfy boots ever. They are probably a pair I would travel with - great style and awesome comfort. I last wore them on Monday with my turquoise fringe skirt.

I'm finally wearing this new-to-me belt that I bought for $5 at the vintage fair back in the fall.
I love the thick - but not too heavy - chunks of metal and the rounded/hammered links. And speaking of coincidences, the fabulous Ms. Helga von Trollop is wearing a necklace very similar to this today! If you don't know Helga, you should - you think I do colour? No, she is the Maven of Colour.

Showing off my Scottish ring, my Wendy Brandes ring and my vintage 80s snake ring, which I did not wear on my thumb (it's hard to take a picture of both hands!).

Top (Danier Leather, thrifted), dress (Smoking Lily, consignment), boots (Gabor), belt (thrifted).

I was treated to a display of cuteness this morning:
"You can't see me! I'm Camo Kitty!"
 Silly boy, there you are.
"Rub my tummy!"
It was worth being a couple of minutes late this morning just to give him a tummy-rub.

Happy weekend! Hope you are all having fun!

For me, I am all tuckered out and I need a nap. But first, a post and some tea.

Friday's outfit:
These red boots are finally softening up for regular wear! Hurrah! I last wore them here (last outfit, just before the travel pictures) a couple of weekends ago with my black leather dress.

This is my asymmetrical brown skirt again (last seen here last weekend in the 2nd & 3rd outfits). Viewing that post, and seeing Vizzini's destruction of my olive shoes...arg. He got into my closet again today and chewed off some of the remaining strap on the damaged shoe. Can't look away from him for a second! That strap still does up, but these are never going to fool anyone that they're in good shape. Little monster!

This is my second wear of this lace top.
I will admit to flapping my arms and saying, "I'm a beautiful butterfly!" to one of the directors yesterday. I'm sure he thought I was crazy. Heh. I last wore the blouse here with my blue knit skirt.

I liked all the neutrals punctuated by red - and red lipstick! - and of course, I'm never subtle with my colour, so I added more with my coat!
Don't be fooled. He is an evil kitty.
L and I went for dinner last night and then hung out and played board games. What a fun Friday night!

Coat (Danier Leather), top (handmade, vintage, thrifted), skirt (Le Fleur de Mon Secret, consignment), boots (Adrian Agnes, Fluevog).

This morning, I got up early and went to WW - I haven't been since before Christmas, so it was nice to see everyone.
Another wear of this navy ruffled dress (last worn here on Thursday all sleeveless and brrrrr-y!). I'm wearing my navy vintage slip under it again.

I liked the capelet (last seen here with a cream, blue and lavender mix) for keeping my arms warm while at the meeting and at lunch after, but I don't love it. It's not going to stay in my wardrobe after this month.
I haven't worn these shoes as much as I thought I would this month, probably because the lighter colour doesn't look right with darker tights, although the last time I wore them, back here again, they looked all right with lacy tights.

I also shopped and walked around in them all day and the balls of my feet are killing me now. Seriously, throbbing. They may have to go.

An outerwear shot:
I doubled-up the capelet as a scarf with my outerwear. I liked the mix of pink and orange (the umbrella) and purple (the bag and gloves) with the bright coat. I overheard someone say, "I love that coat" as I was leaving the diner. I love it too!

It was raining when I left this morning, but now it's a mix of sun and clouds. I hate carrying a brolly around all day. I converted this bag to cross-body after lunch, but it was still awkward (may have had something to do with the bottle of wine in it?). I wasn't really dressed for shopping.

Oh, speaking of shopping, I finally mailed off all the little goodies that I bought before Christmas. So, Megan, Megan, Lynne, Tamera and Lorena, your packages are all in the mail!

Coat (Bebe, thrifted), capelet (Floating Gold Iceberg), dress (Smoking Lily, consignment), shoes (Aerosoles).

I went to the Women in Need (WIN) Thrift Boutique - I don't go there very often because I think they overprice most of the clothing, but I do have good luck there.

Witness...

I found this really nice stretchy sweater layering top by Jones New York:
It's a really vibrant tomato/orange red, and was $9.50 (that's about $5 overpriced for thrift, in my book, but it's a good cause). This will work well as a cami-type of top. I'm trying to replace all my junky cheap camisoles with nicer versions in either knit or woven, structured types of tops.

I fell in love with the colour of this sweater:
It's a deep rust-brown colour. The cut is also very flattering on my figure, and I liked that the sleeves are 3/4 length. It's by Bandolino and was $13.50.

My addiction to leather and suede continues! I put back a pair of brown suede pants (they were $20) after much deliberation. I already have a rocking pair of brown leather pants.

However, I did find this amazing olive green suede skirt:
Of course, it's Danier Leather, it's made in Canada, and I'm pretty sure it was from the 80s. It's a size 10 and it's a super-high waist. I like high waists for the tummy-control. It was $28.50.

I know, I just bought a black flared nearly-maxi skirt just last weekend...but this one is a full-on maxi, and it's suede!
It's got a really tiny waist (get thee to the gym, Sheila!), but it has pockets! And it's really super twirly. I promise action shots when I finally wear it! It's also Danier Leather, also made in Canada and was $29.50.

My biggest score of the day was a gorgeous pair of bronze-y metallic pumps:
That's the perfect shape! The heels are also only about 2" max, and the colour is a perfect neutral.

And they're Lauren by Ralph Lauren, and get this - only $18.50! These have been worn maybe twice - they still had most of the original price tag half-peeled-off crap on the soles.
I recognize the "red dot" sizing as being from The Bay department store. These are nearly the same shape (but a lower heel) as my caramel Ralph Lauren pumps that I bought on deep discount at the Bay last year.

I plan to wear these until they fall apart.

I've been gradually collecting fur pins (I have this vintage one with pearls and this mink rose) on my journeys through thrift and consignment stores. Another one is added to my keep-out-of-Vizzini's-reach collection:
That's very close to actual size. This one is a stick pin - anyone else remember when stick pins were a fad? Around 1980-81? I recall being very excited when I got one for Christmas to wear on the lapel of my corduroy blazer.

Anyway...rambling... this one was the cheapest one I've ever found - it was only $1.00! Yay! Score!

Hope you all are having a great weekend!

I'm sick. Had the fever, the chills, now the coughing and the hacking and the blah. As I said to people at work today, "I'm 99% sunshine, 1% cranky." Yeah, I went to work today. I shouldn't have, but I did - too much to do!

I managed to last 3 hours yesterday, and thought I'd be okay until suddenly it felt like a truck hit me.
But at least I looked good!

I had to wear the Smoking Lily cape as a skirt again (here it is last time), this time with the point at the back, so it's like a fish tail wiggling when I walk. So fun!

I like the way the purple suede vest (last seen here) plays off the pink and brown of the plaid, accentuated by the matching (matchy! whee!) tights. And of course, the cape/skirt is lined with dark purple satin!
The cream cowl-necked sweater does its job of being a Good Layering Piece - it was last worn here, as were the lavender booties.
I blew the colour out a bit on the indoor photos (curse you, winter!) to show the nice draping of the skirt/cape.

Vest (no label, vintage, consignment), sweater (Club Monaco, consignment), skirt/cape (Smoking Lily, consignment), booties (Feud).

After sleeping all day yesterday, I figuratively girded my loins, took some cold medication (ooh, the velvet tunnel) and went to work today. And went to my WW meeting tonight - it was predictably entertaining. I lost my train of thought several times - but my group knows me pretty well, and they get my whackadoodleness (that should totally be a word).
This is my red dress, which I haven't worn since our road trip (here), another excellent layering piece. It was also an extra layer of warmth under the skirt.

The ribbon skirt is such a marvel, isn't it? I have only worn it the one time previously this month (here, with lots of olive), but it's a keeper.
The black stomacher makes a nice transition piece for the waist, and the classic red belt over it. The black bead necklace is jet and belonged to my grandmother. Oh, and the boots were last seen here when I foolishly exposed my bare arms in winter.

Dress (Planet, consignment), skirt (MNG, consignment), boots (Gabor), stomacher (InWear), belt (Plum).

Holy smokes, you guys, can you believe I only have 2 more days left in this challenge? That's crazy! What the heck am I going to wear on Friday?

Special shout-outs to Marianne, who wrote about me here (thank you!) and to Patti, for missing "Visible Monday" at Not Dead Yet Style(but I'm sneaking in at the end, heh heh). You guys rock!
