Olive the Colours!

$

I am so excited to wear bright, light colours! Mind you, I'm not totally on board with this whole pastel thing, especially mint green, a colour that I particularly loathe (check me out in 2009, ranting about my mother-in-law's mint green walls of her house, ha ha). It's really hard to wear.

Not hard? Olive!
And red and blue! Because I like colour - all of/olive (hee, see what I did?) the colours. Except mint green.

My Ron Leal (namecheck: Canadian high-end designer) jacket, last seen here (2nd outfit) in January.
I've layered it over my red wool dress, which I last wore here in February with a serious multitude of reds. Not sure if I will keep this dress in my spring/summer wardrobe - although it's sleeveless, I have another lighter-fabric red dress (this one) that doesn't get as much love in the cold months.
I built the outfit around the scarf, of course.

The stuff:
My "I [heart] Billy" shoes. Which I never wear. I last wore them in May 2013 (eep!) here with a jacket I passed along. I think it's time to pass these along - they are about a half-size too small, and although I love them, I don't really LOVE them. It's a fine line.

I spotted this scarf again the other day in my closet - I store my scarves in open shoe boxes, and my closet is in dire need of a clean-out so things are getting mess - and thought, "I need to wear this!" I put it at eye level (I'm very visual) and when I was planning my outfits on Sunday, I pulled the dress, shoes and jacket into the scarf party.
Simple accessories do the job.

Jacket (Ron Leal, thrifted), dress (The Limited, thrifted), shoes (I [Heart] Billy), belt (Danier Leather), scarf (thrifted), earrings (Joyce's, vintage 80s), ring (Wendy Brandes).

Think Pink! and Florals

The cherry blossoms are starting to bloom here - it's so pretty! I must get out this weekend and take some pictures. Until I do, you'll have to imagine it. Let me evoke it with some pink.
I've been on the lookout for the perfect pink skirt for a while (much like the search for the perfect red skirt). Searching for that kind of perfection is kind of fun, especially when you're poring through the chaos that thrift stores can be.

My dark floral blouse gets another airing (with super-secret hidden-in-plain-sight necklace!). I last wore it here in January, while demonstrating how I pre-plan all my outfits on Sunday.
The skirt was thrifted on the weekend here. It's a smidge big on me, but I don't mind that. Better than being too tight!
I have pale pink fishnets on. I skipped a belt because of the loose waist, and also because this blouse has a tendency to untuck when I lift my arms.

The stuff:
Sweet Coffee shoe goodness - my Sumatras were last worn here in February (speaking of perfect red skirts, there's my leather one).

My secret floral necklace. It goes so well with this blouse.
I enjoyed all the pinks, purples and in-between shades. I felt perfectly spring-y!

Blouse (no label, thrifted), skirt (Conrad C, thrifted), shoes (Coffee Sumatra, Fluevog), necklace (local), earrings (Le Chateau).

Draggin' My Feet

This week is draggin', especially because I have a couple of days off soon. Might be the weather, which has decided it must rain in time for the weekend.
Or it could be that I'm wearing dragons. Hah!

We had a huge visit of VPs from all over Western Canada at my office today. Best outfit needed! "Very professional, but still very Sheila," one of them told me (he's met me many times).

Looks like boxy blazers are back in style. Good thing I still have my awesome black boyfriend blazer that I thrifted ages ago. I last wore it here in December 2013 with a very Christmassy blouse.
The sleeveless blouse underneath is part of my dragon ensemble - it's scales! I first wore it here in November 2013 with pants (I know! Pants!).
My yellow skirt is just to die for. I *heart* it so much. I first wore it here in February with leopard and angora. Naturally, I got some kind of mark on it during my day, but it came out with my trusty Folex. All these light colours for spring - you've got to have your stain remover!

The stuff:
Many oohs and ahhs over my shoes. "Look, dragons!" I exclaimed as I hoisted my legs in a very unladylike way over my desk. You didn't actually think I am anything other than a total nerd when it comes to my clothes, did you?

I last wore them here in April 2013 with my green checkerboard dress. I don't wear them very often anymore, but I still love them. Never giving them up.
I mean, how often do you find shoes with dragons on them?

The bling:
A belt I'm fond of, my chain leather cuff (to go with the hidden chain on the neckline of the blouse), and a dragon pin of L's (it's stamped D'Orlan) that I think I found in a thrift store. Can't remember, too long ago!

Jacket (Banana Republic, thrifted), blouse (Rachel Roy, thrifted), skirt (Mister Leonard, thrifted), shoes (Aldo), belt (Gap), cuff (handmade), pin (D'Orlan), earrings (real gold, gifts from L).

Formal Friday: Lemon and Rainy Florals, and a Wee Shop

Hey-oh! Friday, Friday, Friday! Off to drink wine and hang with L, but first, clothes.
Spring, spring, spring! It feels right around the corner and bam! I am all about the colours now. I'm identifying some of the trends that I like - it's fun to change up one's style in a seasonal way. The trends never last too long anyway, right?

Although I generally dislike pastels on me, this lemon yellow cardi is saturated enough to work with my colouring. And I do adore yellow. I last wore it here in February, as a gateway outfit with houndstooth. I'm down to $3.00 per wear on it after 2 outfits!
The cami underneath is Liz Claiborne. I only wear it for layering. I liked the rich orange of it with the red and orange in the skirt.
The skirt's colour palette of cooler than the mostly warmer tones I usually wear, but I'm liking it. I last wore the skirt here in January with leather and ruffles (another spring trend I'm all over).

Outerwear:
I love this raincoat! It started out a little sunny, a little rainy, then whoosh! Tropical downpour...followed by sun...then more rain. Typical.

The stuff:
I last wore my Presence Impulse shoes here in November, with cranes and snowflakes. My feet were happy in flats today.

Cardigan (no label, thrifted), cami (Liz Claiborne, thrifted), skirt (Attention, thrifted), shoes (Presence Impulse, Fluevog), earrings (the Cobbler).

Thinking about my spring wardrobe and colours, I went to the mall (I know! the horror!) after work. I went to Jacob to look at their Made in Canada items, and Le Chateau to look at their Made in Canada items; there was an excellent selection in both stores, with lots of dresses, pants and jackets on sale.

However, I had already found a dress at Migration, a small local business that sells all locally-made items, including clothes and jewelry. Check it out:
It's a gorgeous blush pink lace lined with blush pink satin. I hear blush is the new black (ha!).
It's by Walk in Clozet, and I can find nothing about them (although wow, I want a really big walk-in closet now). The dress was half off the already-reasonable $79.95.

Check out the awesome sleeves:
They split open! How cool! And the lace is flowers and spider webs! Awesome.

I also went to the Bay for more micro-fishnet nylons. I found a couple of cool pairs of socks for $4.00 a pair.
Do I dare wear them under shoes like shown on the tag?
I couldn't find where they're made on the tags or on the socks. But I am letting this go, as I am not into buying second-hand socks so much.

I also went to MAC in the Bay to stock up on some spring colours:
A nice pinky blush (I usually wear a darker coral) called Rosy Outlook, and three new shadows. The purple is Plum Dressing, the cream is Shroom (a long-time favourite that I was nearly out of), and the gold-y brown is Amber Lights, a colour suggested to me by reader Sheila (thank you!). MAC is all made in Canada! Woo!

----------

Special bonus! Playing in my closet with my new dress.
Oh yeah, I'm totally going to wear that out some time soon. Gawd, I love that fur hat.

Special special bonus: boob shot!
This is what happens when you push the button but haven't set the timer for the stair picture.

Happy weekend, everyone!

Weekend Round-Up: A Day with Friends, and Officer Vizzini on the Beat

What a lovely weekend it's been. Nothing much of anything, although there was a flurry of cleaning (the house smells of bleach and lavender).

L and I went for breakfast on Saturday morning.
The skies opened up and poured rain! Although it wasn't too too cold, I covered up more. But still - colour!

My Kraft Dinner yellow sweater was last seen here in early January, with black leather and the same power lines belt buckle.
My denim maxi skirt hasn't seen much action lately - I last wore it in a punk-inspired ensemble in November 2013 here. Aside for the aforementioned cleaning flurry (and a subsequent nap), I wore this skirt from 9:30 am till 2:00 am.
The barely-seen boots were last worn here in February.

My outerwear ensemble.
Complete with crazy hat! I have to thank Judith of Style Crone for inspiring me to wear hats more. Why not?

I don't mind the side-eye. I give good side-eye right back.

Also, I am wearing orange lippy - a spring trend I wholeheartedly embrace!
Yeah, I'm wearin' a hat, what of it?
The coat is a lovely wool Betsey Johnson that I thrifted (it's even made in the US!). I last wore it here (2nd outfit) on a December 2013 Saturday.

Here's a better look at this magnificent beast of a hat:
The pin is a Smoking Lily gold leather heart
It's beautifully soft and stays perched on my head without any clip or elastic - and without giving me hat-head!

It's an Henri original:
Based on the shape, I'd say it's from the '50s.

Check it out - this precipitated many lewd comments later on in the evening.
"Genuine Supreme Beaver" with some crazy spelling of Czechoslovakia
This was a really sweet gift from my dear friend Elaine.

Jacket (Betsey Johnson, thrifted), sweater (Spense, consignment), skirt (InWear, consignment), boots (Gold Button), belt (Tony Lama, thifted), buckle (locally-made, gift from L), hat (Andre Original, vintage 50s, gift from Elaine), pin (Smoking Lily), necklace (Global Village, gift from Mom), earrings (local, gift from L), wood ring (Dots), purse (The Trend, thrifted).

A whirlwind cleaning of the condo ensued after breakfast and some chore shopping (as opposed to fun shopping!), L and I napped for an hour before heading to town to meet up with 10 of our closest besties for drinks and general carousing at the pub. Cat and Ross and the two of us had already planned an evening of Arkham Horror, so we left after a few hours.

There were points for wearing green for St. Patrick's Day. You can bet I will be green head to toe tomorrow!
Changed out the top for a green combo of lounge-around-the-house long-sleeved tee layered under this green sweater, which is an old Winner's purchase, and was last worn here (3rd outfit) in October 2013 for a weekend brunch.

I also swapped out the higher-heeled boots for my new-to-me Fly Girl shoes. Good for walking to and from town in the rain! I last wore them here (3rd outfit) a couple of weeks ago in another maxi skirt outfit - I need to wear them with a short skirt before I pack 'em away for fall.

As above, except: Sweater (Max Studio), tee (Plum), belt (vintage 80s, thrifted), necklace (gift from Mom).

With the warmer weather, Vizzini is busy catching up on the neighbourhood business.
"Seagulls, cars, garbage bins...all as it should be."
Check for our neighbour's cat:
"He's not on at his post! I'll be reporting that."
I like watching Vizzini's paws as he navigates the narrow ledge of the deck.
"And..gotcha! What's going on behind my back?"
Squirrels are beginning to poke around in the Gary oaks.
"Begone, vile rodent!"
 Vizzini's so fast, he's often a blur.
"You gulls, back to your roof!"
 He sees all.
"Gotta check this end of the deck now - is that a bug?"
There's always time for a quick break.
"And back to the --- *lick*"
 He never misses anything.
"What's that up there? A door frame?"
And around again he goes, on his patrol.
"It's safe to go about your business now, ma'am."
And all is right with the world.

Hope you're having an awesome weekend!

My Lucky Charms - Green!

Happy St. Patrick's Day! I have a very small amount of Irish in me (an Irish great-grandmother on my dad's side), despite my green eyes and (artificially) red hair. However, I do like wearing green, and St. Patty's Day is a good excuse.
Round two for this little pouffy skirt, mixed with a few of the greens in my wardrobe (I have a lot more, but it's packed away with my spring/summer stuff).

The jacket is a delicious chartreuse green, and was last worn here in the June 2012 30 for 30 capsule (I know! I'm as shocked as you!). Wow, I really don't wear this enough!
I turned the cuffs under today, to make the sleeves bracelet-length (for showing off a bracelet, naturally!).

The sweater underneath it is a 100% cashmere one, last worn way down at the bottom of this post back in November 2012, with my barnyard skirt.
The skirt behaved admirably again today - I did like it with a bit of a heel, and with the fitted sweater and the jacket worn open. I first wore it here earlier in March.

The stuff:
My fuzzy Kermit shoes stole the show today! I last wore them a full year ago, here, for last St. Patty's Day. I think I need to wear them a little more than that!

Let's enjoy their green (and purple-lined!) splendour just a bit more, shall we?
"There's no place like my closet! There's no place like my closet!" Yes, they came with the turquoise stones and ribbon on the toes.

Green bling:
The unlucky charms here are the necklace stones and metal, which made a big dark V mark on the front of my cashmere sweater (unhappy face!), but I've washed it carefully and I think I got it all off. The real lucky charms are my wonderful vintage bracelet from Mom and my Wendy Brandes ring.

Jacket (Alison Wonderland, consignment), sweater (Daniel Bishop, consignment), skirt (Quillaree, consignment), shoes (Poetic License), necklace (vintage fair), bracelet (vintage 60s, Mom's), earrings (local), Fulvia Ring (Wendy Brandes).

The Last of the Darks

Only one more week of the fall/winter wardrobe after this one, and I'm going through my clothes and pulling items that I really want to wear one more time.
This jacket is one. It's a keeper, through and through. The skirt is still in its experimental stage, and I'm thinking it is more of a warm-weather item (not lined, very thin silk).

The jacket will be packed away with my heavier clothes. Something about summer and velvet, especially black embroidered velvet, that just doesn't work in the heat, ha ha. I last wore this jacket here in November 2013 - with the same shoes and the same cami! I prefer the wider belt in that outfit vs. this skinny one.
My skirt is Orange by Hugo Boss (look at me, name-dropping), and was last worn here in February.
As mentioned, I'm still not sold on the dress, but it was nicely swooshy and it feels gorgeous to touch. I'm going to give it 1-2 more shots, then decide if it's staying.

The stuff:
The last time I wore these sweet Pearl Hart Bellevues was with this same jacket (here). Such a great colour.

Simple bling:
Leaves of bamboo! These whacked me in the face every time I went up and down stairs.

Did I tell you guys about my newest Lazy Chick workout? I do the stairs at work, all 6 flights, 6 times a day. I set 3 reminders in my calendar: one for 10am, one for noon, and one for 2pm. I run down them, then run up, then down, then I take them two steps at a time. It's killer, but it's super fast. It's like a mini bootcamp at work!

Off to WW!

Jacket (Le Chateau, consignment), skirt (Orange by Hugo Boss, consignment), shoes (Pearl Hart Bellevue, Fluevog, purchased from Elaine), belt (Plum), earrings (local), ring (Wendy Brandes).

Last Plaid and Dior Slip

Continuing with my theme of wearing stuff I'm about to put away, one more go for my red plaid dress.
I might also pack away these boots, but because they're short, they make good "shoulder season" transitional items for chilly April/May and autumnal September days.

Another go of this Forever 21 (I know!) incredibly elaborately-made top. I liked it much better with the pencil-shaped bottom versus the pouffier skirt that I wore it with last time, here, in February.
Although this red dress is unlined and therefore could be a candidate for spring/summer wear, it just feels like a cold-weather piece to me, as it goes nicely with navy, blacks and greys. I last wore it here (way down near the bottom) in late December 2013 with my usual blacks. I'm not terribly creative with how I style it, but I do really like the dress.
It makes my butt look good (that could be all the stairs!) and it has pockets. What's not to love?

You'll notice that I have a substantial amount of slip hanging out. Here we are:
That's what it looks like. It's a dark grey satin slip trimmed with a substantial amount of lighter grey lace. It's a half-slip, meaning it only covers the bottom half, as opposed to a full slip (top and bottom).

I found it at the Patch in 2011 (first time wearing here), and yes, it's Christian Dior.
How very cool. I paid $14.95 for it, which is a little on the pricey side, but considering I wear it at least once every couple of weeks, it's getting good cost per wear.
"Int. Ladies Garment Workers Union" - that was dissolved in 1995, so it's prior to then.
Despite what the tag says, I machine wash on delicate and dry on delicate - that has removed the original issue I had with the stiff lace snagging up my tights.

The stuff:
I love these boots. They are so comfortable to wear. They're starting to get a little battered, but they've got a few good years in them still. Ha, I last wore them with this same top, here.

Red bling:
I love that leather cuff. I want another one.

Top (Forever 21, consignment), dress (Plum), boots (Marc), cuff (Rimanchik), slip (Christian Dior, thrifted), earrings and ring (local).

Spring on My Toes

Today is the first day of spring! It rained, hailed, was windy and sunny. Yeah, typical spring for us on the west wet coast. As I have a few days off coming up, today was my Friday - huzzah! And I only ended up staying a half hour late, way to go, me.
Look away, neighbours in your jammies, nothing to see here.
More things I'll be packing away: this vest and the skirt. Have you noticed that brown is a total non-entity in "fashion" right now? Brown nuthin' is what I see in the fashion rags lately. Not that I care what the cool kids wear (never been one), but it's interesting to observe.

The vest and skirt have a steampunk vibe, and I like that in autumn more. Both are keepers, of course.
The blouse will stay in my closet - as an awesome basic piece - but is getting a bleach job. Apparently my burgundy lace tights are not colour-fast, so I have small splashes of pink all over the shirt. Oops. I last wore it here in January with blurry florals.

The leather vest was last seen here in November 2013. It's not really a spring/summer item; it's better for layering. I paid $18.98 for it on consignment 3 years ago, and I've worn it dozens of times - that's great cost per wear!
I love the skirt so much. I last wore it here on the last day of 2013.

The stuff:
I had flowers on my feet! Spring on my toes! I love these Docs so much. Patti and Val, please treat yourselves! I last wore them here in February while I shopped like a boss. Since it was my Friday, I babied my feet with these cushy boots.

Leaf bling:
The leaves are Lucite but the metal of the necklace is nothing special and is quite worn. This necklace was loved by someone a lot before me - I like that.

Blouse (Uno Due, thrifted), vest (CAbi, consignment), skirt (Orwell, thrifted), boots (Doc Martens, consignment), necklace (thrifted), earrings (don't remember).

I'll be taking a bit of a break, but will be back soon. I hope y'all have an awesome weekend - and walk with spring in your step!

17 Years of Sole/Soul Mates; 'Vogging in Van; Starstruck

Hey! Did you miss me? If you've been reading my blog for over a year, you might remember that our wedding anniversary was this past weekend. As L and I do every year, we go over to the mainland to Vancouver to get away, visit friends and do some shopping.

First of all, Happy Anniversary, my most awesome husband. Thanks for sticking with me through thick and thin.
Gawd, we look so young!
If we had to do it all again, we'd change a few things about the wedding (yes to "Ming's Wedding" from Flash Gordon and the "Imperial Death March" from Star Wars), but we would still pick each other.

Here's to another 17 years with my best friend.
As seen on "Culture Serf: Vancouver Street Style" - go here! And here for last year!

More of that later, but let's get on with it. If you haven't already figured it out, this is going to be a big post. It's been a busy weekend!

We both took Friday and Monday off (so needed it!). We put together our mini-capsule wardrobes on Thursday night. We had several factors to consider: we travel by seaplane, which only allows 1-2 bags per person (weight is an issue); we'd be doing a lot of walking; and we'd be going out for dinner twice. Well, plus we wanted to look good! Nothing worse than traveling and looking like a tourist!

Friday travel/shopping/dinner outfit:
In retrospect, I would have changed the underskirt as it rode up every time I wore it. I liked the effect, but it rained most of the time we were in Vancouver, and the friction of my cross-body bag against my coat caused it to creep up to my waist. Most disconcerting!

This is my black leather "Buffy" slip dress, last seen here in February with leopard and thigh-high boots. Not sure if I'll keep the dress out for spring/summer - I'm thinking not, as it's best with a leg covering (it's short!).
I have nude microfishnets nylons on.
The blouse was nice and light for layering. I last wore it here in January. After wearing it for a couple of days in a row, I think it's going to go in the giveaway pile. It's a little pilly and the quality is not that good.
The floofy underskirt is a cool piece, but would have been better if I hadn't been wearing a coat most of the time. I haven't worn it since I layered it under my turquoise dress in June 2013 (here), but it's a useful item and doesn't take up much room.
I wore my awesome Desigual coat all weekend. It held up really well, although one of the buttons popped off (don't worry, I rescued it), and it was nice and warm in the craptastic weather (it's a wool base, plus it's padded). I last wore it in February for Chinese New Year, here.
My bowler kept the rain off my hair (and repelled water beautifully!). I also wore my purple Danier leather gloves, and my two-tone Fluevog boots, the Libby Smith Bellevilles. I knew it had been a while since I wore these, but really? June 2013? That's way too long. I think I will keep them out for spring/summer and try to get a little more wear out of them. I walked for hours in these and they were so awesome.

Blouse (Cleo, consignment), dress (Danier Leather, thrifted), underskirt (Noa Noa), boots (Libby Smith, Bellevilles, Fluevog), coat (Desigual), gloves (Danier), hat (Andre), earrings (gift from Lise), rings (Wendy Brandes).

Vizzini always knows when we're about to go away.
"I saw the bags! I know what you're doing!"
The look of pure outrage.
"I'm going to open all the closets and eat your stuff!"
We always miss our little bub!

As mentioned, we take the seaplane over to Vancouver.
Getting ready to taxi out of the Victoria harbour
Getting off the Island is an ordeal. You can only fly or take a boat. Most people take the ferry; it's cheaper, but it takes forever. Flying is more expensive, but you get to be from one harbour to another in less than 40 minutes. Our time is worth it.
Looking down on the southern tip of the Island.
I'm such a geek about flying. I love looking down on the land.
Facing the Inner Harbour
Flying over the city.
Leaving a cloudy day
I love the play of the sun on the water.
Little islands between Vancouver Island and Washington State to the south
This was our first time in a Twin Otter - it had the props on the wings instead of the nose, and was a much smoother flight.
Looking down on a private island. That's the plane's pontoon in the foreground
We also flew higher than the nose-prop planes do. It was cool being above the clouds most of the way.
 Such gorgeous morning light.
Mount Baker in Washington rises above the clouds in the distance.
It's such a fast trip. I can't ever go back to the long ferry trip!
It's like the opening "Jaws" homage in Airplane!
Skimming in over the mouth of the Fraser River on the mainland.
Lots of barges, log booms in the water and farms all along the delta.

Look who we saw!
Damn, she's got amazing eyes!
It's Melanie of A Bag and a Beret! She's now part of our visits; what a fun, sweet and cool lady. I like that she uses O's Magic Loupe to read the menu.

We went to Acme Cafe* in Gastown.
*linking 'cause I love
Gorgeous old Art Deco touches near the door. I gotta say: Mac and Cheese with bacon? Om nom nom!

Also amazing:
Their selection of pies and desserts. Melanie had pecan pie, L had some of that pink cake (it was chocolate with raspberry cream cheese icing), and I had a chocolate meringue cookie.

The obligatory selfie-selfie:
I love seeing the Muppet coat in person!

We were very good and did no bum-grabbing (this time).
Melanie was a trooper and walked around with us in those shoes, showing us some of her Super-Secret favourite second-hand haunts. She also accompanied us to the Fluevog store in Gastown, but didn't see what we ended up with (go on, scroll down to the bottom - you know you want to!).

Thanks so much for coming out to see us again, Melanie! We had a blast!

L and I shopped for about 4 hours on Friday, then ended up having an early dinner and crashing at the hotel (ah, reruns of South Park). We've both been working some long hours lately, so we really needed the down-time.

On Saturday - our actual anniversary, right down to the day - we met up with our friend Craig for lunch at El Camino's on Main Street for brunch. Man, Vancouver really knows how to do brunch. El Camino's had amazing Latin American and South American food. It was excellent food in preparation for more shopping.

Saturday daytime outfit:
Same colour palette, with this magenta cardigan, last seen here in January while giving away all my wardrobe planning secrets. I have a belt on over the cardi, and I changed to flat shoes to rest my feet.
I see you!
The shoes were last seen here (2nd outfit) with my red polka dot pants earlier in March.

Cardigan (Jacob, thrifted), dress (Danier Leather, thrifted), shoes (Town Shoes, thrifted), belt (Nygard), earrings (gift from Lise).

It poured rain all day while we went up and down Main Street, which is full of second-hand, vintage and boutiques that carry locally-made items. My kind of area! I'll get to the shopping stuff soon, I promise!

After an exhausting day of shopping and walking in the rain, we had a nap back at the hotel, then got ready for dinner. We met up with our friends Anthony and Laura for a lovely dinner out at Joe Fortes. It was pretty good, although very expensive.

Variation on a theme!
Presto chango! Added my thin copper lame (lah-may!) sweater under the dress, back to the poofy underskirt, and back to the booties. I last wore this sweater here with a pouf skirt earlier this month.
I stick my tongue out at you!
This was a good dinner outfit - as you can see, the dress has a lot of waist room! I added my crazy barnyard necklace and gold hoop earrings.

Sweater (Main Fung, thrifted), dress (Danier Leather, thrifted), underskirt (Noa Noa), boots (Libby Smith, Bellevues, Fluevog), necklace (consignment).

L also looked very dapper in his ensemble.
Such a stylish man! A couple of times over the weekend, people asked us if we were artists. We certainly dress creatively!

After dinner, the four of us walked up to another hotel to chill and have a drink.
I love all the shops and trees lit up.

Even around our hotel!
Um, blurriness may have been alcohol-related. Heh.

Last year, we went to this same hotel for drinks and saw a bunch of actors from that show "Once Upon a Time" (Robert Carlysle, Ginnifer Goodwin), and Julia Styles. We played it cool - no gushing over celebrities! - and didn't say anything.

However, this time I spotted this gentleman at the table next to us:
Source, and about him
L and I are both huge Joss Whedon fans, and recognized him right away. That's Fran Kranz!

As he and his table were getting up to leave, I said, "Hey! Fran, right? Loved you in Dollhouse and "Cabin in the Woods."" He was really nice, and shook our hands, asked our names, and we chit-chatted a bit about Vancouver and Victoria (he'd just been there shooting a pilot the day before). He was friendly and gracious, and seemed pleased that we'd recognized him. I'm glad I spoke up. So cool!
---------------------------

Anyway, Saturday was the actual anniversary day, right down to the actual day of the week. Here we are 17 years ago. That's my dad on the right, and my maid of honour, Janet, beside him.
These are pictures of actual photographs, sorry for blurriness
L is trying not to laugh like the rest of us, but my dad had just stepped on my train, yanking me to a very sudden halt. We'd teased him for weeks that he would do this - I'm wearing my mom's wedding dress, and he did it on their wedding as well - and of course, he did. Dad died 6 months later, so these are the last pictures I have of him with me.

This is my entry for both Judith's next "Hat Attack!" over at Style Crone, and for Patti's "Visible Monday" happening now over at Not Dead Yet Style.
My wreath of flowers became a torture device over the course of the day, but I love how it looked with my mom's wedding dress. Isn't the dress cool? She and Dad got married in 1965.

And after much reminiscing, we got up early to catch our flight home.
Tankers and shipping docks
Of course, it was a beautiful sunny day! Of course it only rained for our one full day in Van!
Looking north
Planes all in a row. And home we were, once again, just like that.

I actually wore nearly every piece of clothing home that I'd brought with me, to save room in my knapsack for all the stuff I bought. My bag weight increased from 5 pounds to 14 pounds, and even my purse's weight went up from "nah, we won't weigh it" to 7 lbs.

We both showered then headed out to lunch. Comfort was the name of the game.
This dress gets worn around the house a fair bit. And this is the last wear of the over-the-knee boots until next fall.

I last wore the dress here (3rd outfit), a couple of weeks ago. Also for brunch. I'm not that creative when it comes to brunch outfits. I'd probably do better if I had coffee in the morning.
I have one of my long-sleeved tees under it (which I continued to wear all day).

The boots were last seen here (2nd outfit) for a weekend shopping trip.
A low-slung vintage belt, plus my black leather cuffs, and bird skull earrings.

It was cold enough to wear my brown fuzzy faux fur coat for the first time.
I'm laughing because Vizzini is frantically mrow-ing and rubbing all over. He was so excited to see us back.

Dress (Kensie, consignment), boots (Pegabo), cuffs (vintage and Guess, thrifted), earrings (local), belt (vintage, thrifted).

Vizzini was especially interested in L's new Fluevogs.
"Kitty spaghetti! I eat the laces!"
These are the Gateway Brandenburgs (here, linking 'cause I love). They are a pewter metallic patent leather with a black leather toe cap. L wore them to brunch and got several "Whoa!" comments.

Okay, finally! Here's what I bought. Some items were splurges and some were not. I bought L his shoes; he buys mine - those are our anniversary gifts to each other. Following the "Second-Hand First" pledge, if I can't buy second-hand first, I will pay for quality, ethically- and locally-made or designed items. All links below are because I love.

I found this fabulous vintage dress on the sale rack at F as in Frank.
I love the shape of the collar lapels, and the little double pocket on the right side of the chest.
It's polyester or nylon and is by Haybrooke Classic, a company that existed from 1962 until 1984. I'd say this dress is from the early- to mid-60s.

It was only $10!
I'm excited to wear it. I'm really grooving on yellow this spring.

I found this lovely silk dress at C'est La Vie Consignment.
It's by Club Monaco, and I love the swirly skirt, as well as the mustard, lemon, lavender and brown pattern.
A super-flattering bust/waist cut.

In the sun, so you can see the colours.
It still had the dry-cleaning tag on it, and was only $40.

I had to visit one of my favourite boutiques, which is right next to the Smoking Lily store (didn't buy anything there this year), Two of Hearts Boutique. I bought my lovely chartreuse CiCi dress from them last year, along with a bunch of jewelry. They specialize in local designers, and the two owners make their own lines. Last year, I got CiCi; this year, I got two items by SaVVie.

I love the cornflower blue of this dress:
And pockets!
It's a lovely thick, stretchy cotton, and fits like a dream.
Great zipper detail. This is called the Mimi dress.

I never mind paying more to support a local designer.
It was on sale for $98, and is worth every penny.

I also fell in love with this classically-shaped skirt:
What's not to love about this awesome pattern?
Pockets again! I adore when designers add pockets. Thank you!

A good deal at $49.
I am really grooving on simple patterns and high-contrast right now. I know this skirt will go with a lot of the colours in my spring/summer wardrobe.

I found these cool earrings:
They are by dconstruct jewelry, and as you can see on the tag, they are made from "ecoresin" with 40% recycled content.
I like the little details, even down to their packaging.
They were $32.00.

I also went into Devil May Wear, another cool boutique specializing in locally-made clothing and household items.
What a cool belt! I had to have one.

It's reversible, with a different pattern on the inside.
I might change up the ribbon colour, but it's pretty with white.
"Handmade with love in Canada" - it was $40.

For those who made it this far without scrolling down to see them, finally, here are my two new pairs of Fluevogs!
These are the Half Truths Tanya (link) in green.
These were L's favourite shoe that I tried on - I try every Fluevog that even remotely appeals to me, because sometimes they look differently on the foot than on a table.
Love that kitten heel and the double strap, and the way the ankle comes up and cups at the back.
Look at all that squishy padding! These are hugely comfortable. Due to the narrowness, I bought these in a 10, so size up if you're shopping online. I usually wear a 9 or 9.5 and I have narrow feet.
Fluevogs always have good soles. And Fluevoggers have great souls!

On the other hand, L hates these booties.
They are the Prepare Map (link), my 3rd pair of Prepares.
They are much more of a pinky-purple than they look online, where they look very browny-purple to me.

The laces are leather and based on the comments on the style on the website, I need to be careful with them, as they are more delicate than regular laces. I think if they break, I'll replace them with ribbons.
John's signature
Right down to the blue soles...
Based on my other Prepares, I know that these are a dream to walk in. As expected, I wear a 9.5 in this style.

Well, that's quite enough! I'm tired and am going to enjoy the rest of my day off before I'm back to the grind tomorrow. I hope y'all had an awesome weekend!

Fluevog Week! Prepared for Sunshine

Arg, even though I had Monday off, today felt like...a Monday. There is no sun out, and it keeps trying to rain. Blah!
Not blah? Me! In lots and lots of yellow! I've decided to do a Fluevog Week, both to revisit some of my favourite pairs, and to show off my new ones.

First yellow: my lemon yellow cardigan, which last appeared here a couple of weeks ago with my rainy floral skirt.
I wore it layered over my new-to-me dress, just purchased this past weekend (here, in case you missed it) for $40 on consignment. It's too chilly still to have bare arms.
The skirt of the dress is bias-cut, so it has that nice flowy movement when I walk. It also has a deep yellow/mustard lining (you can see a bit of it in the top picture).

Here's the dress on me without the cardigan. I took it off whenever I did my sets of stairs today - I didn't want to get sweaty.
Vizzini's trying to bite the hem of my dress!
I love the simple shape of this dress - I did wear a mustard cami underneath it to cover up the cleavage.

The stuff:
My gorgeous yellow Fluevogs were purchased on our anniversary trip last year. I am very fortunate that L buys me shoes that he personally hates! I last wore these here (2nd outfit) in November 2013.

Colourful bling:
This necklace matches my dress perfectly! All the colours!

Cardigan (no label, thrifted), dress (Club Monaco, consignment), shoes (Prepare High Steady, Fluevog), necklace (Oscar & Libby's), earrings (vintage), spinner ring (Twang & Pearl).

Fluevog Week! Blue with Purple Platforms, and a Houndstooth Thumb

What a crazy day! I'm glad this is a short week for me.
Mostly new stuff today, including my new blue dress and my purple Fluevogs.

Due to it still being quite chilly out, I have a cami on under the blouse, the blouse under the dress, a half-slip under the dress and micro-fishnet nylons on. My arms were still cold.
The dress and shoes were both purchased on the weekend in Vancouver (here). I liked the stretchiness of the dress, as well as the length of the skirt part. Its waist is set much higher than my natural waist, which is where my belt is, but I'm okay with that. It did wrinkle in the lap and but area, but I'm also fine with that. Stuff wrinkles. Whatevs.
The blouse was last worn here in February with lemon and houndstooth.

A rare outerwear shot (I usually have my runners on by this time).
I had to wear the orange leather jacket to match the orange wooden beads on the shoe laces!

The stuff:
These are the Prepare Map booties, and they were fabulous to wear all day. I even walked to another office and back in them, with no foot pain at all. All that heel is balanced out by nearly 2" of platform at the ball of the foot. Seriously, they are like wearing flats.

Aside from the fabulosity of these booties, the laces did come undone easily. I was leery of pulling them too tight (thin leather laces prone to breaking, according to the comments from other purchasers), so I ended up with pulling the bow loops really large to nestle all the beads at the knot. This worked like a charm.

Purple and blue bling:
The usual suspects.

Dress (Savvie), blouse (Lida Baday, consignment), boots (Prepare Map, Fluevog), belt (Plum), cuff (thrifted), earrings (local), ring (Scotland, locally-made), lapis lazuli ring (Wendy Brandes).

Patti wrote about nails, polish and asked about these polish strip things the other day here. I picked up a pack of the Sally Hansen ones (link, for info, no profit to me or them) and a pack of the Maybelline Colour Show strips (not found on their site) a few months ago - they were on sale for $4.99 a pack in a bin at the drugstore. I've never reviewed any kind of product for profit (and won't, it's not my bag), but here's my two cents about these.

I rarely wear nail polish. Call it lazy, but I can't be bothered. I keep 'em short and clean and that's about it. However, I was tempted by the ease (cf. lazy) of just basically putting stickers on my nails. Baby steps for me: how about just one nail?
My left thumb got one strip of the Sally Hansen strips on Sunday night. It was a little tricky getting the bottom lined up with my nail - it took a couple of tries to get it right, and I'm lucky I didn't stick the strip to itself. I was able to pull off the end of the sticker a couple of times to line it up better. I probably could have gone up one width size (there's a ton of different sizes in the pack), as the cuticle of my nail on my thumb is a bit squarer than their preset shape. I also noticed that the strip did smell like nail polish for about 12 hours. I guess it hardens up? It doesn't smell anymore.

It's lasted really well over the past 3 days, although a little bit has worn off on the tip of my nail. I do dishes and a lot of physical things at my job, so it's taken a beating. Note that I'm right-handed, so it's on my non-dominant thumb. I'm sure a strip on say, my right index finger would get a lot more wear. We'll see how it goes for another week, or until I can't stand it being messy.

I do quite like the flash of pattern and can see myself doing one or two nails as a fun thing once in a while. The Maybelline pack is gold with black leopard spots - whee! - so I'm looking forward to trying that one out too.

Fluevog Week! Last of the Babycakes and More Yellow

Who wants more yellow? I do! I do!
Seriously, I can't enough of yellow lately.

Today's outfit is mostly dress, this yellow patterned 60s dress, to be precise, which was purchased on our anniversary weekend here.
It was wonderful to wear all day. I flounced about, swooshing the skirt this way and that. I can't wait to wear it with some little flats or sandals in hot weather.

Notice my double belt action? I didn't want to look too vintage-y; there's a fine line between Crazy Lady Vintage and Chic Chick Vintage. I hope I'm balanced right in the middle (I like a little Crazy Lady in my look, heh).
I wore this lovely peach slip underneath and happily hauled the hem of the dress up to show it off to all my fashionably-inclined coworkers.

The stuff:
See? Double-belt. The bottom one came with my Boss Orange skirt. I never wear belts exclusively with the things they came with. All of the jewelry is vintage, from the 60s and 70s (the ring).

Another item to pull my look across the Crazy Lady line is these fabulous boots:
The Babycakes Minis! I love them so much, but away they go until fall/winter when I start missing my boots. I last wore them here (2nd outfit) in December 2013.

Dress (Haybrook Classic, vintage 60s, thrifted), belts (Boss Orange, consignment, and Club Monaco), boots (Babycakes Minis, Fluevog), mink brooch (vintage, thrifted), earrings (Weiss, thrifted, vintage 60s), bracelet (vintage 60s, thrifted), ring (Sarah Coventry, vintage 70s, thrifted).

Weekend Wrap-Up: Fluevog Friday, Shopping, Attack Cat and Holes in My Ears

Oh my, what a weekend it's been! I started with Friday's Fluevogs.
And a little stripes and polka dots. I wore the jacket all day, except when I was running up and down the stairs. All second-hand, except for the shoes and the earrings, both of which were ethically-sourced/made, so linking up to Bella's "Second-Hand First"here!

The jacket is my Danier Couture consignment leather, last seen here with a pouf in March.
I like a striped top, but I still haven't found the perfect one. This one was last seen here (2nd outfit) in September 2013.
I loved wearing my red polka-dotted pants again - they were last seen here (2nd outfit) in March with paisley.

Spring temps are finally arriving, although it rains without warning.
Hat needed, as are the scarf and gloves.

The stuff:
Triple green! First wearing of my wonderful Half Truths Tanya shoes (purchased here last weekend). I wore them around all day, including walking to the bus stop, walking several blocks to lunch with my boss, and walking home after work after drinks with my coworkers. My heels did get rubbed by that lip at the back a bit, but overall they were lovely to wear.

Green bling:
The necklace is my mom's, another one pilfered from her jewelry box when I was a teenager, around 1984-5. I think it's from her childhood, so probably from the 50s. I'll probably get corrected on that.

The earrings are new, also purchased last weekend.

Jacket (Danier Couture, consignment), top (Truworth by Finnegan's, consignment), pants (Tara Jarmon, consignment), shoes (Half Truth Tanya, Fluevog), coat (corporate swag, former job), gloves (Parkhurst), scarf (Smoking Lily).

On Saturday, L and I went for brunch with friends Nick and Elaine. Elaine and I went shopping afterwards.
Dressed for shopping: easy on/off clothes, tights, camisole, and minimal jewelry.

One of my forgotten "soft tops" that doesn't live in my closet, this is a lovely soft blue top that I got at Plum many years ago. I last wore it in August 2013 for L's high school reunion (here, 2nd outfit).
Purple skirt! I did the big closet changeover today, and this skirt stayed out for spring/summer. I probably won't wear it much in the summer, but leather is awesome for our wet, damp springs. I last wore this beauty here in January with the same tights.
I packed these boots away for the season, but I'm hoping to find a replacement pair for them over the next 6 months. I also want to replace my semi-casual brown boots, so I'll be doing a little off-season searching for my long-range wardrobe planning. I last wore these here in February with pink and grey.

I also put this white leather jacket in the giveaway pile (which grew by a lot today, and moved to the library).
It looks nice and white in the pictures, but the quality is not that good (the leather is very stiff), and it's very discoloured in places. Time for a better-quality replacement.

Top (Oxmo), cami (InWear), skirt (Chia, vintage 80s, thrifted), boots (Aldo, consignment), jacket (Le Chateau, consignment).

Someone would like to introduce my shopping loot:
"Yes, yes, I'm happy to see you. Now rub my tummy."
He rolled around back and forth, then went after my feet.
"Go ahead, these claws aren't sharp."
Pink toes on purple hose!

Elaine actually spotted these in the St. Vincent de Paul - they didn't fit her, so I tried them on.
They're a little snug, but they have stretch as they're plastic.

However, Vivienne Westwood "Anglomania + melissa" is a brand I know!
I have these white and copper hearts shoes too (pic).

This is the actual colour.
Bright pink! The design is the "holy hand grenade" symbol that's in the shoe. You can't see it unless you're really close up, but the entire inside surface of the shoes are also embossed with the same design. I saw these same shoes on eBay for $99 US. What did I pay? $4.00. Yup, $4.00.

This isn't good quality by any means, but the cut is really cool.
It actually has belt loops set into it, to cinch the waist with a belt. I liked the "hidden picture mindgames" design. I see zebras and wolves in it! It's by Streetwear Society and was $4.00.

I found this lovely dotty scarf for $2.00.
I like the graphic design and the high-contrast colours. It'll look great with all my yellows this summer.

It's by Echo, and is 100% silk.
Houndstooth thumb update: still no chips although my nail growth is starting to show.

Vizzini cannot resist a scarf. I lay them on the floor to photograph and he gloms onto them right away.
"Now you see it..."
I don't know what it is about scarves. He doesn't do this with anything else.
"...now you don't."
I always keep my eyes out for good items for L. I lucked out with this awesome shirt.
It's a very pale yellow with orange, pink and taupe rings. The content tag has been removed from the neck, but I can tell that it's silk by feel.

I looked up Toscano and see that they are sold at Nordstrom (we don't have those here in my neck of the woods, only south of the border) for between $55 and 65.00.
$4.00 is just fine by me. L loved it - it will go with his orange pants!

You sewers will appreciate the amazing finishing on this shirt.

Every seam was double-stitched; no unbound edges at all. That's quality!

Elaine headed off and I went on to the Hospice Store to check out their new spring stock. I found this lovely silk blend skirt.
It's by Precis Petites, one of my favourite brands. Excellent quality and classic cuts in high-end fabrics.

You can see the nice weave here. This will be great for summer.
An excellent deal at $12.00. I know that their skirts start around $120.00 new.

Elaine's also recently cleaned out her closet - she thought I might appreciate this vintage turquoise suit.
It's that early 60s, Jackie O-inspired cut: a very boxy jacket over a pencil skirt. I love the colour and the awesome brown pearlized buttons.

The skirt is a perfect fit, however, it has some moth damage around the hem.
I'll probably wear it anyways - I love the colour!

The fabric is a knit, as you can see here. Judging by the moths, it must have a large amount of wool in it!
By Niccolini, and Made in Canada. The company dissolved in 1991.
Nice that this wasn't made in a sweatshop.

I did one other thing while I was out shopping, but we'll get to that. I had Winesday on Saturday night, so I was rushing around after shopping and didn't take a picture of my outfit. Today/Sunday, I wore the exact same outfit again to go get groceries.
Um, and I might have done a bit more shopping after that.

A crazy weekend outfit. Woo hoo!
I swapped out the top for my black Morena skirt, last seen here in March with my Leia jacket.

I also added a Smoking Lily obi, and yeah, I'm wearing knee high socks instead of tights. I was comfy.
I had to wear my new pink shoes! They weren't too bad for an afternoon of walking around, although the toes were a little squished.

Skirt (Morena, consignment), obi (Smoking Lily), cuffs (both thrifted), shoes (Vivienne Westwood Anglomania + melissa, thrifted), necklace charms (various).

I did well at the WIN Boutique, finding this gorgeous Planet blouse:
It has a nice finished bottom, the asymmetrical ruffle and is a gorgeous tonal striped tomato red.
You can see the striping there. It's polyester and machine washable. Not bad for $13.50.

I love finding these structured knit shells; they are perfect under a spring jacket. Much better than a camisole.
This is almost a chartreuse yellow. It's by Cable & Gauge.
 I thought $9.50 was reasonable.

I have been mentally scoffing at the Hawaiian prints in the fashion mags - it always ends up looking cheesy on me.
I don't think I'll look like a tourist in this lovely Talbots skirt. The colours are amazing, aren't they? That yummy citrus orange with the lovely magenta pink?

It's a silk-blend and was $14.50.
I loved this purple, orange and pink scarf:
"Time to play!"
 So did Vizzini.
"I love this scarf soooo much."
He immediately started drooling on it. The scarf was $3.50 and is 100% silk. It's by Perfect Match, and I see by their website that their small scarves start at $15.00, so I did pretty good.

One thing that I didn't buy, but got back yesterday was this vintage belt. This was originally my Mom's belt, from the 60s. I liberated it from her wardrobe in the 80s (probably 1984-5) to augment my own wardrobe.
When I first met my friend Caro, I was close to 200 lbs. She was so gorgeous and slim and I thought this belt would look amazing on her (I could barely do it up), so I gave it to her. She never let go of it, and last night at Winesday she gave it back to me. It means a lot to have it back. I bet my mom will be glad to see it, and know that I didn't irrevocably lose a piece of her history.

Maybe it will make up for getting my ears pierced. Again.
The 3rd hole is new - I had the first hole done with Mom in 1980, I think, when I was 12-13.
 And again.
I had my second holes done a year later -  I had to have a letter from Mom in order for the person in the t-shirt shop to agree to do it!
And again. Sorry, Mom!

I have wanted the 3rd hole on both ears for many years, but I didn't want to go to a teenager in Claire's at the mall to do it with one of  those brutal "staplers", so I went to Hannah at Urge Studios to have it properly done. She was so thorough in explaining everything; it was like being in a dentist's office with all the instruments laid out. I felt very much in safe hands!

I'd been considering having a 4th hole on my right ear, but with the even distribution of the lower 3, for a 4th one to have the same spacing, it would have to go through cartilage. And once we started having that discussion, it was an easy jump for me to want a piercing high up on my ear. I chose a little green opal (my birthstone).

All three piercings were quite sore last night, but I have very little pain today, and there is no bleeding, crusting or general gunkiness and grossness that I recall from my original two holes. I will replace the hoops once my ears have fully healed. I have the matching small diamond earring, and hmmm, what about one of Wendy B's emoji earrings?

I know this isn't to everyone's taste, but I'm very happy with my decision and feel very badass.

Blue (and Leopard) Monday

Ah, Monday, suckiest of the suck. I really need to have 3-day weekends and 4-day work weeks.
I was happy with my outfit today (I may have dressed to match my little green opal in my ear!). I'm not a very adventurous pattern-mixer, as I do love my matchy-matchy, but I liked this quite a bit. The key seems to be have at least one neutral colour in common in both patterns, and make one of the patterns all neutral. This is the same formula as with Friday's red polka-dot pants and black and white striped top. See? Tricky Sheila!

The sweater is my lovely little leopard cardigan, last worn here in December 2013. It's an all-year piece.
I have a black top on underneath for coverage, but it's not really visible.

The skirt is my new SaVVie piece, purchased on our weekend in Vancouver here. I wore a short white slip under it for warmth (I have BARE LEGS, you guys!). It was lovely all day, and I adored the deep pockets.
The boots are the only tall boots that weren't packed away with the fall/winter gear. I last wore them here in early March with skulls. They're another "shoulder season" item that I like to keep out.

The stuff:
Must wear all the blue! I realized after taking all my pictures that I'd forgotten to put the bird cuff on...but I did wear it all day.

Cardigan (XXI, consignment), top (Mossimo, consignment), skirt (SaVVie), boots (Prepare Guides, Fluevog), belt (Plum), necklace (thrifted), cuff (Shi Studios), Fulvia Ring (Wendy Brandes), earrings (Oscar & Libby's).

Vintage Aqua and Paisley Ruffles

Hey, hey! The sun is out, it's warm and lovely...
And I've got my super-duper short hair (my hairdresser is moving to London, oh no!). I had to dye it last night because when she cut the back, all I could see was grey! I'm not against that much grey; I'm just not ready for it yet.

To the outfit! I wore my lovely paisley pleated ruffly blouse for the second time (first time here, 2nd outfit, with those polka-dotted pants). I'd planned to wear this blouse (pic) that I bought on the weekend, but it was a way more casual vibe than I wanted. I'll save that blouse for a weekend outfit.
I'm laughing at Vizzini, who spent the first 9 seconds of the timer mrowing and rubbing all over me, then decided to bugger off right as the timer went off.
The skirt is from the vintage early 60s suit that Elaine gave me on the weekend (here).
It was wonderful to wear all day, although the lack of a slit meant that I couldn't do the stairs two at a time.

Here's the suit on:
That jacket is way too boxy! I guess your eye has to get used to different styles. I wore it as my outerwear coat - perfect for this weather!

The stuff:
My beloved Darjeeling Teapots, last seen here with my "flying V" vintage top in February.

Big bling:
Whatever you call big rings - cocktail rings, dinner rings, knucklebusters - I do love 'em.

Suit (Nicoletti, vintage 60s, gift from Elaine), blouse (CAbi, consignment), shoes (Darjeeling Teapot, Fluevog), earrings (local), Fulvia ring (Wendy Brandes).

Floof, Flounce and Bustle Bust

My day was full of hustle and bustle - so much to do, so little time.
How appropriate that I wore my most fussy, girly, floofy, flouncy outfit - complete with a bustled shirt!

My pinstriped red and white shirt is so cool - it always gets a lot of comments. I last wore it over Christmas 2013 (here).
I loved how it looked with this new cinched fabric belt, however, I became angry at the belt over the course of the day, as it was not rigid enough to keep its shape. Sitting caused it to bunch up, and I wanted it to lay open, and be wide as it is in these pictures. It did not stay nice!

I'll have to try it over something with a smoother waist - the skirt's waistline also didn't lay flat (it's a bit big), so that was also bunching. I hate bunching!
The skirt in question is my black leather pencil skirt, last seen here also over Christmas (but with a different top).

Overall, I ended up disliking this outfit intensely. I don't usually post my negative opinions on my outfits, but the proportions are wrong, the shoes look visually clunky, the belt drove me nuts, and as a whole, I think it just doesn't work. I'm changing before I head out to a WW meeting tonight (and I'll post that outfit tomorrow).

The stuff:
Lovely shoes! So fun to wear. I last wore them with many other flowers here in February.

Octo-bling!
Isn't he cool?

Blouse (Linea Domini), skirt (Hemingway, vintage 80s, consignment), shoes (Neosens), belt (Devil May Wear), necklace (Raven's Roost Studios).

Woo! It's been a crazy few days! Did you miss me? Don't worry, I'm back. Deep breaths.

Like I said in my last post, in which I expressed displeasure at my outfit, I changed to go to a WW meeting on Wed night. I liked Margaret's comment on my negative thoughts around the original outfit that day:

I know I'm risking sounding disagreeable here but I don't think saying "I did not like this, and here is why I didn't." is negative. I appreciate knowing that other bloggers are experimenting, and revising, and dealing with belts that will not cooperate, and finding that what seemed okay when they were getting dressed ended up just not being right after all. I'm pretty critical of my own outfits (and I do think that my critiques are often interpreted as negative) but the whole reason I bother to blog at all is so that I can take a good hard look at what I'm wearing. I reserve the right for myself to say when and how I've missed the mark and I wish more bloggers would too. I think most people simply won't post an outfit that they don't like rather than saying that they don't like it. It freaks me out a little that people seem to feel that if we are not being completely "everything is awesome" positive then we are being negative and we should keep those kinds of thoughts to ourselves. Being genuinely and reasonably critical of our clothing choices isn't negative, it's normal. They're just clothes. They don't have feelings. It's okay to say they don't go together.

I try to post every outfit I wear - not the stuff around the house, but the things I'm seen in public wearing - the good and the bad (and the occasional ugly). I find it more interesting to hear what you as readers think of my outfits, rather than just blandly saying, "I loved this outfit" all the time (although I'm guilty of doing that). Generally, I'll say how I feel about my outfit, and yeah, it's usually good because I like/love most of my clothes.

And of course, having negative thoughts about an outfit (or being insanely angry with a part of it, heh) doesn't mean I'm being negative, any more than saying positive things means I'm blowing sunshine. I like to set a positive tone overall, because that's how I roll, but believe me, if I don't like an outfit, I will still post it - and rant about it. Check out here how much I loathed this outfit in February 2009.

Anyway, thank you, Margaret! I appreciate your thoughtful comment.
This is what I changed into for my visit to the new WW centre in Victoria. Yes, my workplace has moved! I've arranged with my receptionists to drive me there and back each week (I don't drive), and it will be a new and exciting change of scene for everyone. Okay, that was blowing sunshine; I'm not actually happy about moving so far out of town, and would prefer a meeting closer to home, but that's not happening anytime soon, so may as well suck it up, buttercup. Ha!

This is my I-always-feel-good-in-this Smoking Lily green dress, last seen here (3rd outfit) in August 2013 with teal and purple.
I have a navy-blue full-length slip on under it, which you can see peeking out a bit at the hem. I went with a simple black leather obi, and my black flats, last seen here (2nd outfit) in March with my polka-dotted pants. I had my black leather jacket on for the entire meeting as well.

Dress (Smoking Lily), obi (consignment), shoes (Town Shoes, thrifted), necklace (Raven's Roost Studio).

This is my new WW meeting room.
Aren't the green chairs hideous? Heh.

On Thursday, my company threw an open house at the new office we opened recently. I had to be there early to get the pizza, and set everything up. I stood outside the building for 45 minutes, greeting everyone and letting them in. I had to be bright!
I built the outfit around this newly-thrifted Talbots skirt (purchased here last weekend for $14.50).

I adore this chartreuse velvet jacket. I last wore it here for St. Patrick's Day in March.
It goes well with the colours in the skirt. This is my version of pastels, which all the cool kids are wearing this spring.

The little white top is a great cami-substitute. I've been working at gradually replacing my junky t-shirt fabric camis with actual woven or knit tops that are better quality (and classier, in my opinion). I last wore it here in September 2013 for Monochromania! week.
I had so many people saying to me (as I was standing outside the office building near the end of the day) how much they liked the colours and the outfit overall. I got the "homeless person thumbs-up" twice.

The stuff:
I'm so happy to have the "Kraft Dinner" shoes back in rotation. I last wore them here in September 2013 for Hawaiian Shirt Day at work. Oddly enough, I spotted these exact same shoes (even the same size!) in the thrift store yesterday for only $18.50 - I paid $99 on sale for them a few years ago. I briefly considered buying the other pair as eventual replacements for these, but nah...

Big vintage bling:
Well, the ring's not vintage, but the brooch and earrings are - they belonged to my Grandma J.

Jacket (Alison Wonderland, consignment), top (Le Chateau, consignment), skirt (Talbots, thrifted), shoes (Tsubo), pin/earrings (vintage 60s, Grandma J's), ring (consignment).

I had Book Club on Thursday night, so went straight there after cleaning up at the open house. I got home late, and hung out with L instead of blogging. I have my priorities!

For Friday, we also had a special event after work, so I had to plan an outfit that would last all day, well into the late evening.
Bam! In your face, pastels! I really loved the colour combination in this outfit (and again, got several compliments from strangers over the course of the day/evening).

I'm linking up to Patti's "Visible Monday" over at Not Dead Yet Style. Get over there and gawk at the fabulosity!

Most of my coworkers spent their time trying to figure out what to call the scarf I'm wearing in my hair. I got "kerchief", "bandana", "scarf", "hair-thingy" and a couple of other creative attempts.
I wore this oversized peachy-orange satin blouse tied at the waist. I liked the "Rosie the Riveter" vibe this gave it. I may have flexed my pipes and said, "We can do it!" a few times.

I last wore it here in December 2013 under a green cardigan. I'm much more ladylike in this outfit, tee hee.
Isn't the skirt fab? One of my female coworkers said it made my "tuchus" look good. I agree! I just purchased this lovely silk/viscose skirt last weekend here for $12.00. It's not actually red, but a rich raspberry pink.
I wore my even more vivid orange leather jacket as my outerwear - it is leather weather! My rich purple leather cashmere-lined gloves kept my hands warm.

The stuff:
Gorgeous purple wondrous shoes, how I love them! They are getting a bit worn out (the toe shoes evidence of a Sheila face-plant at some point in their history), but I love them so much. If I ever spot a duplicate of these in a thrift store, I will buy them! I last wore them here in September 2013 for Monochromania! week.

The scarf in my hair is of course the item that ties it all together.
"I love scarf!"
The circles are outlined in a deep raspberry pink (check!), there's that nice lavender for the shoes (check!) and there's a great orange-y tone in the circles (check!). All matchy, all good.

I did purple and pink bling.
A thrifted bracelet, some homegrown vintage, and my Dad's ring from the early 60s.

Blouse (Mark, thrifted), skirt (Precis Petites, thrifted), shoes (Camper), scarf (thrifted), bracelet (thrifted), earrings (vintage, 90s), ring (Frances Jewelers, vintage early 60s, Dad's), jacket (Danier Leather, consignment), gloves (Danier Leather).

After work, I rushed home and fed Vizzini, then L and I walked to town to meet friends Patrick and Yvonne for dinner before going to a concert.

We saw Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings:
The concert was at the fantastic Alix Goolden Hall (more pictures here, from when we saw Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell in November 2013).

The opening act was James Hunter (site here, linking 'cause I love).
He reminded me of a cross between Buddy Holly and Dick Dale. He played with a few of the Dap-Kings.

The Dap-Kings took the stage after an intermission.
There were a total of 8 musicians on-stage: a trumpet-player, an alto-sax player, a baritone-sax player, two guitarists, the bassist, the drummer and a gent playing the bongos.

Then the two back-up singers same out and showed off their tremendous vocal abilities.
They are recording artists in their own right, as the Dapettes.

Sharon Jones is a force of nature! She is recently cancer-free, from bile-duct cancer, and every minute onstage, we could see her incredible energy and joy in performing.
L wrote a review of the concert on his blog here, and you can read the local reviews of the concert here and here. Better pictures of her stunning white dress there too (this is a fashion blog, right?).

She danced herself right of her shoes at one point (cute kitten-heel sandals, I checked), before putting them back on. She is 57 years young, and man, I wish I had her energy!
She never broke a sweat! If you ever get the chance to see her, take it! You will have a blast, enjoying some of her amazing brand of soul/funk. Check out this fun animated video for her single, "Retreat!" on YouTube.

L and I got home quite late and crashed right into bed. Bright and early Saturday morning, we headed down to the diner for brunch.
I was optimistic about the weather, and wore a light dress with bare legs. Oh, I was foolish.

This lovely floral dress is much better in person - it photographs a bit scattery.
I last wore it here in February with tights - it rained the whole time I was out (several hours) and I was freezing by the time I got home.
However, pockets!
I had my yellow leather jacket on, which was kept zipped up all day. Brr! I did get several compliments on my "skirt".

The stuff:
You can see that nearly the entire toes of my flats are wet. I am happy to have these lovely floral leather shoes back for spring/summer. I last wore them here (scroll down) in September 2013 with a big floofy skirt you'll be seeing again in a minute.

Simple little turquoise earrings for shopping!
Dress (H&M, consignment), shoes (Chie Mihara), earrings (local), jacket (Danier Leather).

I went to the big WIN Warehouse Store for a leisurely browse while I hoped the rain would let up (it didn't). I found some cool items.

This blouse:
I don't worry too much about size, so this XL blouse is fine by me. I don't do this spring's cropped tops very well (I look too booby in them), but I can fake that look with a tucked-in or tied oversize blouse (see the orange top above, for example), and it suits my shape better.

I loved the colours in this.
Also, only $5.00! Someone doesn't know the brand name Hale Bob! I do, and it's not cheap - I have these shoes from Winners ages ago, and these two (here and here) dresses that I bought in NYC many years ago.

I have seen graphic-print long soft-shaped coats for spring in the fashion mags. I fell in love with the great shape on this one.
It's a bit big on me, but will work as outerwear for spring just fine. It's polyester, but feels like wool, and it's fully lined, with pockets. The check is also cut well, so that it's straight and lines up at the seams. I like that detail.
It's by I.N. Studio, a brand that is sold in Dillard's. We don't have Dillard's here in Canada, so I don't know what it would have cost originally. More than I paid, no doubt!
It was only $19.50, plus an extra 25% on coats!

I think whoever priced this sweater top (another cami replacement) didn't look at the tags on it very closely.
It's a good brand (Dana Buchman) and it's 100% silk.
Nice thick ribbing, although the top itself is not too thick. It's an excellent layering piece.
And only $4.50. What a deal!

I can never turn down a nice bright obi!
It's a gorgeous rich magenta shade (or orchid-something, whatever that trendy colour-of-the-year is), and was only $3.00.

I did spend a little more on this groovy shirt for L:
Isn't it awesome? I'm so lucky that L is adventurous in his clothing. It makes it really fun to shop for him.

Check out the contrast/bias-cut accents.
It's a dark purple, with orange/mustard and pink stripes.

And score! It's a Ben Sherman!
The exact same shirt (even the size) is on eBay here for $27.99, and I paid $15.50, but I've seen Ben Sherman shirts locally in menswear boutiques for over $150.00, so I still feel like it was a score.

L and I made a detour Saturday morning to go to the post office to pick up a package. Look at what was in it!
Ooh, sweet blue Jack Idol boots by Mr. John Fluevog - these are Petrol Blue.
L will definitely be rockin' it in these!

And maybe there was a pair for me in there?
Of course there was! I tried the 8.5s on in these orange Big Presence Desmond pumps in the Gastown store in Vancouver, but they were too tight. I actually went to a local store (that only had black) to see what size I would actually be - a 9, it turned out. They run a wee bit large, but then I wear anywhere from an 8.5 to a 10 in their shoes. Don't ever buy a pair of Fluevogs without trying on the same shoe last in person, as they are highly erratic in their sizing.

These are a nearly neon orange, and the uppers are a waxed-finish canvas.
And look at that sweet heel! Why wear plain ol' heels when your heel can make a statement.

Mine say "John Fluevog":
They also reveal how much I love their shoes:
I heart them!

Today, L and I went out for a brief cruise. We have been looking for a loveseat or couch to replace our current one, which is over 16 years old. I spotted a brilliant cobalt blue one in the window of the local second-hand shop yesterday, so we checked it out. Yup, we both loved it! We should have it this week - it's a custom-made sofa in micro-suede, with only a little bit of wear - it was $699, so we saved a huge amount by buying it second-hand.

I never go out without putting a little thought into what I'm wearing.
A comfy floofy swooshy skirt (last seen here in January for a blogger meet-up) is so much nicer than yoga pants!

A slightly fancier green t-shirt (last worn a year ago here in May 2013 with this same skirt!) adds some colour.
The cardigan is quite thin, but I love the navy and cream bold stripes. It's impossible to see, but the cream stripes are glittery gold. I last wore it here (3rd outfit) in July 2013 with another long cream skirt. I'm so original.
The green ankle strap shoes are just pure fabulousness. I last wore them here (2nd outfit) to the Urbanite event at the Art Gallery and to our friend Helene's birthday party.

Cardigan (Kersh, consignment), top (The Limited, consignment), skirt (Lapis, consignment), shoes (Fly London).

Look what else I found in the furniture store!
It's a gorgeous vintage grey fur collar - it matches my hat! I hope I get a chance to wear them together before it gets too hot. The collar was $30, which balances out the $12.99 I paid for the hat.

Okay, okay, onto the cat pictures! I took these on Wed night while I waited to get picked up to go to the WW meeting.
"I'm snoozing here, woman!"
Vizzini's scratching post has been moved onto the deck permanently for the warm season.

He's such a ham for the camera.
"This is my sexy side."
He quickly changes focus. No attention span.
"Really? Black shoes with that dress?"
 He had to quickly patrol.
"No crows nest in my trees!"
He's all covered in fluff from his post.
"Is Terry's cat out?"
It wasn't, so Vizzini hopped down and commenced with stretching.
"I'm a stretchy cat, yo."
Aw, look at that tum and those little white feet! So cute.

I hope your weekend was full of fun!

Orange You Glad It's Monday?

Another week. Here we go, it's Monday.
Overall, a thumbs-up from me - I love doing orange and blue together, and two of my newly-rediscovered spring/summer items are out to play again, AND orange shoes. I did a corally-orange lip gloss with this too!

My little lace peplum top rotates back in. I bought it in August 2013 at the WIN thrift boutique for $10.50 and wore it twice that month (here and here), then away it went for half a year.
The skirt is a gorgeous peachy-orange suede. You can't really see it in these pictures, but that middle front panel is all little laser-cut squares (you can see a close-up here from when I bought it in November 2011 for $24.50 - hurray for thrifting!).
Yes, the shoes are really that bright - nearly neon!
I have a peach cami on underneath the lace top, but you can still see my ink above that.
I bought this lovely spring coat out of season, right after Christmas 2013 (here, way down at the bottom). I paid $14.00 for it. It was the perfect weight for today (I wore a silk scarf and fingerless gloves in the morning, but didn't need them on the way home). I only wish it had pockets!

The stuff:
Yeah, these orange shoes are stunners. I might have to have them in other colours...they have yellow! I just got these in the mail on Saturday, from the lovely Mr. Fluevog's store.

I loved wearing my Ally/Megan obi tie belt today:
And all those lovely blues!

Top (Annalee & Hope, thrifted), skirt (Eddy & Co., thrifted), obi tie belt (Megan Mae/via Ally), pendant (gift from L), earrings (local), swirly ring (bought in Scotland), lapis lazuli ring (Wendy Brandes).

Someone else really liked the tie obi:
"Rar! I have you, tie-monster!"
We let Vizzini play with some of L's less favourite ties. I couldn't resist giving him a little play (I just clipped his nails last night, so no snags were had).
"I have you now!"
He's very good at standing up on his hind legs.

Okay, I had one of those "Why didn't I buy it?" moments when I was out shopping on Saturday. I put a glorious orange 60s maxi dress back on the rack. What was I thinking? But I went back. And it was still there.
Oh, yes, it is mine.

Stunning, full-length, lined in peach polyester, with a sheer overlay of orange, peach and pink.
I have never heard of Berkertex, although it seems to be a UK brand - this is "Amanuella", which doesn't mean the style, but I think more the era or collection.

I'd say this is late 60s. It needs a bigass beehive hairdo, and oodles of arm-candy, don't you think? Look at that pattern!
There's even some yellow in there. Gah, so beautiful!
I seldom pay that much for a dress anymore - $23.50 seems expensive to me! But I am so glad I went back, and can't wait to wear this fabulous find.

Aqua, Pattern and Blue Couch

Fresh from yesterday's wham-a-lama colour combo of orange and blue, here's another favourite combination of mine.
Aqua and magenta! Gotta love 'em together - it's like they were meant to be.

My new-to-me blouse is being worn without the knot at the hip done up. I kind of liked the asymmetrical vibe of that piece hanging down. Well, truth be told, I had tried tucking it in and then putting the magenta obi at my waist, but it refused to play nice with the top of the skirt, high-waisted or not. I hate when my clothes won't play nice.
Blouse purchased just this past weekend for a song (okay, $4.50), here. I love the pattern - all of the colours I love! I'm wearing an aqua cami under it, as it's several sizes too big and slipped around a bit. I could totally do a "Flashdance" off-the-shoulder look with it, heh heh.

The skirt is one I've had for a few years, going back to March 2011 (here), when I thrifted it for $7.00.
I last wore it here in September 2013 - with magenta! Told you I liked that combo!

Outerwear:
I adore this coat! And for $14.50? Crazy good deal.

The stuff:
My bronze Ralph Lauren pumps were thrifted in January 2013 for $18.50. I last wore them here in March.

Big blue (and yellow) bling:
A $3.00 thrifted cuff...but then the Wendy Brandes rings cost more than the entire outfit put together!

Blouse (Hale Bob, thrifted), skirt (Cabri, thrifted), obi belt (thrifted), shoes (Ralph Lauren, thrifted), cuff (thrifted), earrings (Oscar & Libby's), Fulvia Ring and lapis lazuli ring (Wendy Brandes), coat (I.N. Studio).

I'm all about the Secondhand First (hola to you readers coming over from Bella's Shoe Shine!), as y'all know. Here's our new-to-us second-hand blue couch.
It was custom-built and is a gorgeous rich deep blue microsuede. It's all wrinkly because L, me and the Vizzini-monster were all checking it out. It will be good for TV watching (it's "my" couch) and for having friends over for games and parties.
