Dress Week Came From Outer Space! Chartreuse and Rust!

Hey! It's time for another edition of Dress Week! I can't believe I haven't done one since April 2013 - outrageous! My Forbidden Dress Week was a thrill-a-minute ride! Dresses! And more dresses!
But now...it's Dress Week Came From Outer Space! Ahhhhhh!!!

So let's get 'er started:
Shiny! Chartreuse silk always rings my bell in a good way.

I last wore this fabulous dress in November 2013 here.
Same tights as Thursday, plus my faux Hermes silk scarf.
Black accessories to tie it all together nicely.

The stuff:
The Aerosoles boots were last seen here in January for Winesday.

Of course, the entire outfit was built around my new-to-me copper earrings/necklace.
Just purchased this past weekend. Loved wearing them!

Dress (Mary Jo Bruno, consignment), boots (Aerosoles, consignment), belt (vintage fair), scarf (faux Hermes, thrifted), cuff (Grandma J's, vintage 60s, Renoir), bracelet/earrings (vintage 60s, Renoir).

Dress Week Came From Outer Space! Grey Lace and Best Shoes Ever!

Dress Week continues!

All the dresses I'm wearing this week have one thing in common - can you guess what it is?
I adore this dress so much, so I had to wear it with my - yes, I'm making it official - my favourite shoes ever.
The dress was last worn here in January for about 2 hours total on a sick day. No one really saw it then, so I had to include it in a Dress Week!
It's easy to do a dress like this; you just pick a coloured belt (or black like I did last time), and match the shoe to it. I decided to go with grey-on-grey so that I could wear...

Best Shoes Ever!
I know! Swoon! I last wore them here in December 2013 with a backless dress.

Simple bling:
The dress' allover pattern means simple accessories. One of my favourite obis, plus my cool earrings and ring.

Dress (Banana Republic, thrifted), shoes (Poetic Licence), obi (Smoking Lily, consignment), ring (Wendy Brandes), earrings (vintage).

Dress Week! It thrills! It excites!
Um, yeah, okay.

I just felt like being comfy today. Plus, windy.
No, I would like my bangs to stay where I put them, thank you.

I love this stretchy loose dress. I last wore it here in December 2013 with the same necklace (so original of me).
I had planned to wear a belt with this (as I did previously), but the belt didn't work at the hips and I couldn't hike the dress up without it being really short, so I went beltless. I layered one of my around-the-house tees under it for warmth.
I liked these grey floral-weave tights.

The stuff:
Great galloping Smurf shoes! I last wore these aqua beauties here in January (with turquoise balls).

Big badass black bling:
The Mr. T necklace strikes again!

Dress (Kensie, consignment), tee (Plum), tights (Hue), shoes (Prepare Guide, Fluevogs), necklace (Club Monaco), cuff (homegrown vintage), Fulvia Ring (Wendy Brandes), earrings (Aldo Accessories).

Dress Week Came From Outer Space! Valentine's Day Candy!

Dress Week continues!
And I intend to carry it on for a full week, so right up to Monday. Feeling inspired? Give it a try! Dresses are awesome.

Also awesome? Valentine's Day.
Bam! V-Day in your face! My office has been decorated with coloured paper hearts with quotes about love for 2 weeks, and we've been having Valentine's trivia draws for chocolates and little prizes daily. I didn't win any of the draws, but for the final day today I won a huge box of chocolates. Aw!

I got a lot of comments on this and quite a bit of the side-eye from strangers when I went outside during the day. I felt like a Japanese cartoon character, and one of my co-workers said, "You look like candy!"
What would you think if you saw this woman on the street?
I had another dress outfit planned, but then I was like, "What am I thinking? It's Valentine's Day - I've got to get my colours on!" I was glad I did - it was fun to be a little over-the-top.

Starting off with this amazing pink dress. I first wore it here (3rd outfit) for L's birthday party in June 2013. I only paid $13.50 for it at WIN, so now I'm down to $6.25 per wear. It's vintage, probably from the early- to mid-60s and probably never worn. I love that it's silk shantung.
Wrinkly butt!
The cardigan is a red one I've had for a while. It has no labels, and I don't like the way it fits. I need a new red cardigan! No idea when I last wore it, but it's not very often.

Outerwear shot:
Still a little too chilly but it's definitely gotten warmer the last couple of days. Spring is in the air!

I love that red coat so much. We're almost in leather weather!

The stuff:
I'm so in love with these red shoes. Love. Last wore them here in January when I was sick.

Copper bling:
I really liked how the copper went with the pink and red. These are a mix of 60s and 70s, and the pieces are from all different sets (except the cuff and the earrings, given to me as a set), including a rogue single earring (bottom right), which I clipped to my cardigan just above the vaguely heart-shaped brooch.

Dress (Junior Vogue, vintage 60s, thrifted), cardigan (no label, consignment), shoes (Marc), obi (thrifted), cuff/earrings (Grandma J, vintage 60s, Renoir), single clip earring (vintage 60s, Renoir), open cuff (vintage 70s), pin (vintage, thrifted).

Hey, all! I hope you are having a fabulous weekend! It's been busy around here, what with Dress Week, Valentine's Day and other shennanigans.
The super-secret theme that I did last week for my dresses was, "Dresses that have only been worn once before." Did you guess it? Then give yourself a pat on the back. Well done!

Our dear friends Caro and Ronnie threw a Sweetheart Party on Friday night, with the "everyone wear red or pink" theme. I knew I would have to debut this amazing pink dress.
I was the only person who wore pink!
I know! So crazy-insane-awesome. This belonged to Joyce, my Mom's best friend Kathy's mother. It's easily from the 70s - I got it from Mom via Kathy here (scroll down) in October 2013.
It's even more vivid nearly-neon pink in person. Also, HOT (as in temperature). Thank goodness it was sleeveless or I would have died in it. It's the perfect February dress. Love that big ruffle panel down the front.
"I am a stylin' cat, yo"
It was also quite tight on the top. There are four hook-and-eyes on it: two at the neck and two at the waist. It was a relief to get it off at the end of the night.

Outerwear:
We bussed to the party then cabbed home. I love this blue coat. I got a few weird looks on the bus, ha!
Do you see the ears in the foreground?
I wore my floral Docs there and back, just in case we had to walk. Cabs are often scarce on the weekend.

The stuff:
My heart shoes! What else was I going to wear? I last wore my Vivienne Westwood Anglomania + Melissa shoes on the Easter long weekend here in March 2013. They were great for a party, but my feet were a little sore after 4+ hours.

The stuff:
I pinned the swirly brooch over the beaded embellishment at the dress' waist. I loved how perfectly my Grandma J's necklace worked over the high neckline - it's like it was made for this kind of dress. And there's my wonderful metal back from Megan Mae!

Dress (handmade, vintage 70s, Joyce), brooch and ring (Sarah Coventry, vintage), necklace (Grandma J, vintage), earrings (Aldo Accessories), bag (gift from Megan Mae).

After a nice sleep-in on Saturday morning, L and I went for brunch at Floyd's Diner, our favourite spot.
Continuing Dress Week! in this vivid green number.

I got this at the WIN thrift store last year and have worn it a few times, last time here in April 2013, looking rather Christmassy. After wearing the too-tight Joyce dress, it was a relief to wear a dress that was the right size.  I named this the checkerboard dress because it has no label - another handmade item.
We also went to another couple's house last night for a dinner date with Nick/Karen. I wore the same outfit, but added a drapey black cardi for warmth (new couple, didn't know how warm their house would be).
I liked the rock-and-roll accessories with this. These are my great basic riding boots that I last wore here (after all the Film Festival pictures) last weekend.

Outerwear:
The spectacular orange leather jacket. It was pouring rain most of the afternoon (welcome to the real West Coast winter!), and it got very spotted up and wet, but it dried fine. Really, people, don't worry about leather so much.

Dress (vintage, thrifted), boots (Aldo, consignment), belt (gift from Ruth), red cuff (Rimanchik), black cuff (Guess, thrifted), earrings (local).

I spent about an hour at the WIN warehouse store, leisurely browsing through everything. I found a few gems, including this lovely butter-yellow cardigan.
It feels like wool, but there's no label anywhere, aside from a little one on the top of the shoulder, and no evidence of tags removed.

It looked great on, and I love the little pearl buttons.
And only $6.00 - sure!

It seemed to be a yellow sort of day. I also found this wonderful sunny yellow pencil skirt.
It's longer than my wooly yellow pencil skirt (yes, I now have 2 yellow pencil skirts), and has two kick pleats in the back.

Love the vintage label.
Real wool, Mister Leonard, and only $8.50. Crazy good deal!

I am always looking for vintage slips. I really am a bit of a junkie when it comes to these.
I spotted this wonderful dark peach slip and snagged it right away.
I just love the micro-pleats on the boobs and the hem. Only $7.50 for this, which is an awesome deal.

This was the item that made my heart sing:
Oh yes, we are in love! This is made up of diamond of white leather and floral embossed black leather (on the V), all crocheted together with "silk flosh" (I think they mean "floss" - I blame the Turkish label-maker). Silk floss is real silk.

I blew out the contrast in this pic so you can see the crochet-work. I learned to crochet when I was a kid - I could actually make something like this myself if I were so inclined.
"Whoa! Leather/silk" - indeed!
It's just an insane piece, and I will love it and hug it and call it George forever. I can't wait to wear it!

I hope you had a fabulous weekend!

Dress Week Came From Outer Space! Taupe and Cream for Winter!

This is it! *sob* Dress Week is over!
Everyone may commence mourning - wear black if you wish.

Me? Not wearing black!
No, that is definitely not black. Not even a smidge of black.

But, yes, that is a dress! Really! It's my taupe leather one, which was last seen here way way back in March 2013. I thought I'd worn it more recently than that, but I guess time is flying faster than I thought!
I've layered quite a bit with this outfit. Including the vintage slip (seen peeking out in the above shot), I also have a sleeveless blouse layered under the dress for boobular coverage (this one, last seen here in August 2013).
And of course, over all of it is my lovely cream brocade jacket, last seen here earlier this month, layered over fruit and dark florals.

The stuff:
I have giant boat-like feet (size 9.5-10, baby), and considering I am just 5'4", those are large feet on someone my height. I used to be all weird about my feet looking big in flats (hence a lifetime of heels), however, I have grown to like my big feet; when I do wear heels, I have less of a pitch (a less steep angle) than someone with smaller feet. I'd like to think I have better balance, but uh, yeah, I do fall over a lot.

But I'm loving flats and kitten heels more and more. I loved wearing these wonderful vintage-y looking modern flats today. They are so groovily 60s, aren't they? I bought them a couple of weekends ago (here, way down past the Victoria Film Festival pictures) for $10.00 at the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store.

Furry bling:
Sometimes you just want to wear a tribble. Or two.

Jacket (Le Chateau, consignment), blouse (Coldwater Creek, thrifted), dress (Truly), shoes (Fugitive, thrifted), belt (Gap), cuff (Midzo, thrifted), bracelet (Club Monaco), spinner ring (Twang & Pearl), fur stick pin/fur rose (thrifted), earrings (Plum).

Lemon and Houndstooth (and Cat in the Window)

It's a frightfully blustery day today - completely typical winter weather for the West Coast. Rain, wind, sun, dark clouds, rinse, repeat.

I wore my own sunshine!
Someone at work today told me that this was her favourite outfit of mine ever. Huh. I deliberately went a little conservative (for me). There's no accounting for taste.

This is my new-to-me thrifted lemon yellow cardigan, purchased for a whopping $6.00 last weekend here. I greatly admire the erm..acreage of boobage on Helga (go, she's awesome) and immediately thought of her when I saw this.
I wore it layered over my black Lida Baday blouse (last seen here in December when it snowed). I also have a black camisole on under that.
I adore this wonderful houndstooth pencil skirt. Never giving this up, ever.

The stuff:
My classic Guess pumps are starting to show wear. They were last seen here (way, way down) with a purple, orange and green velvet Chinoiserie dress, in January for a burlesque show.

Pearl bling:
Totally not real. Same stuff as what I wore with my pink long dress for the Valentine's party.

Cardigan (no label, thrifted), blouse (Lida Baday, consignment), skirt (Bianca Nygaard, consignment), shoes (Guess), necklace (Grandma J), earrings (Aldo Accessories).

Vizzini was checking out the maple trees this morning, blowing around in the wind.
"Seagulls, squirrels...Officer Vizzini watches you all."
Of course, I went in for a close-up:
"On the beat, can't talk."
He's lost all his white eyebrows on one side, so he's sporting a rather rakish look.
"Oh, it's you. You're still here?"
I never mind being a minute or two late because I'm taking cat pictures.
"Okay, get ready, I'm coming down for a tummy rub before you go."
And a tummy rub was had. Best way to start the day.

Gateway Outfits - Leopard and More Yellow

I a couple of great comments from the lovely Cara (check her out) responding to new commenter Shawna regarding yesterday's outfit:

Of course she likes it -- it's a gateway outfit! Imagine having average interest in fashion, and then seeing a coworker dressing to the 9s every day. It's going to be overwhelming -- but when you wear a "gateway outfit" it allows her to take note of some of the more fun details (the fluttery collar, the made for you fit of that skirt...) that she can slowly adopt into her wardrobe!

Such a perfect summation of it. I've always erred on the side of whackadoodle in  my dressing and I'm cool with that, but I do understand that many women can be intimidated by some of my bright colour combinations, not to mention some of the more "out there" outfits I do.

What do you think? Is today's outfit a gateway outfit as well?
That's a lot of yellow, but this is a good way to wear yellow (or any bright - really, any other coloured skirt would work here) without having it near your face. The dark brown is a solid neutral that helps keep the yellow calm, and the matching leopard shoes and belt provide nice texture.

This is my new-to-me vintage yellow pencil skirt that I picked up here (scroll down) last weekend at the WIN thrift store for $8.50. It is likely from the 80s based on: high waist, length, colour and a more modern label than earlier clothes.
When you have really good quality clothes, they are a pleasure to wear. This skirt is 100% wool, but it's a very thin summer-weight (I'll definitely be wearing it in warmer weather). It's fully lined and has two kick pleats in the back; it also has an overlapping two-button tab above the zipper so that the waistband doesn't pull. Those kinds of details are just not found in a lot of clothes anymore.

The sweater is another gorgeous item to wear. I last wore it here (2nd outfit) while being lame in January.
It's 100% angora, and to prevent allover itch, I wore my new-to-me thrifted vintage slip underneath (it was the perfect length under the skirt too) - this one (picture).

The stuff:
I love my leopard pumps so much. I think they are a shoe wardrobe necessity. I last wore them here in June 2013 with more 80s vintage. These are a smidge too high for me nowadays, but they'll have a place in my closet for a long time, even if I don't wear them more than twice a year.

Vintage bling:
The necklace was Grandma J's, and the bracelet was bought at a vintage fair. Both are by Trifari and are from the 60s.

Sweater (Limited, consignment), skirt (Mister Leonard, vintage 80s), shoes (Steve Madden), belt (Plum), necklace (vintage 60s, Grandma J's, Trifari), bracelet (Trifari, vintage 60s), earrings (don't remember).

Leather and Crochet Vintage, and Backless With a Tie

First up: thank you to my longtime blog-friend Sal for mentioning my gateway lemon/houndstooth outfit in her "Lovely Links" roundup over at Already Pretty. I've known Sal since 2009, when I gave her a "Major Award" (here).

Speaking of major...
Dude, that is a major V on your chest. Yes, indeed it is. I loved wearing this outfit all day - it was all so very comfortable. I wore this outfit from 7:30am to 10:00pm.

This is of course, my fabulous 80s leather and silk crochet top, thrifted here on the weekend for all of $12.50. Get out!
I always love wearing this skirt too. It was last seen here in November 2013 with rust. It's vintage haute couture, Andre Courreges, thrifted for $5.00. Really. I'm down to $1.00 per wear on it. Yowza!
I wore a cotton camisole underneath the top to help keep it from shifting around from its weight (which it did).

The stuff:
My Darjeeling Teapots, darling, last seen here for Chinese New Year's earlier this month.

Badass bling:
High and low: thrifted/homegrown vintage leather cuffs and chi-chi Wendy Brandes rings.

After work, I rushed off to my hair appointment. I need to find a new hairdresser, unfortunately! Mine is moving to London. Immediately following my haircut, I walked a few kilometers to Book Club. I got hit hard by allergies - damn you, beech trees and your pollen (shakes fist)! - so I didn't last too long, although I did manage to eat a bunch of chocolate and drink several glasses of wine. A girl has her priorities.

Top (vintage 80s, thrifted), skirt (Andres Courreges, thrifted, vintage 80s), shoes (Darjeeling Teapot, Fluevog), cuff (Guess, thrifted), studded cuff (homegrown vintage late 80s), rings (Wendy Brandes).

And phew! Now it's Friday! I succumbed to my sucky allergies and took a 24-hour antihistamine (much better, thank you). Now I have to get used to really short hair again.

From fairly conservative this week to right off the charts - this outfit ain't for the shy of heart.
I had several compliments on it, especially the shirt and tie worn under the dress.

This is my denim backless dress, last worn here in December 2013 with a magenta blouse.
The shirt is a Club Monaco one I've had for about four years - it was last seen here in December 2013 under a bustier. It's a great layering shirt. I like that it uses cufflinks instead of buttons, so I can match them to my outfit. L has a huge collection.

Wee! My dress is backless!
My fabulous red Adrian Agnes boots get another airing. Love them - they are breaking in well. I last wore them here in December 2013.

One of my tried-and-true combinations of outerwear:
You can't have too much red!

The stuff:
L's tie - I think it was from Tip Top? Maybe the Bay? The cufflinks are vintage.

Dress (Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti, consignment), shirt (Club Monaco, consignment), boots (Adrian Agnes, Fluevog), cufflinks (vintage, L's), earrings (local), tie (L's).

Check this out - I got flowers from my dotted-line Manager today:
Aw! I love tulips - and such a gorgeous arrangement. I love getting flowers at work - I don't have to hide them from Vizzini!

Wishing you a weekend of sun and flowers!

Weekend Round-Up: Casual While Shopping Like a Boss

$
0
0
Hey! What a nice relaxing weekend I've had. L and I had no plans, so we've mostly hung out together and chilled. "Chilled" being an accurate way to describe the weather - it's been trying to snow for the last two days! Of course, this is Victoria - there's no one on the streets, even though the snow's not sticking. Must be all inside watching the Olympics closing ceremony (way to go, Canada!).

So you get the casual side of me, outfit-wise.
My casual involved flowered shoes and leather. This is what I wore out to brunch at Floyd's with L. Minor rant here: Good golly, people, don't wear your yoga pants in public as trousers! I was horrified at the extent of the "I give up" fashion on the streets of Victoria yesterday. We can do better!

I adore this lumpy green sweater, even though it doesn't do much for me. It's a "wear around the house" piece now. Make room in the closet for something else! I last wore it here (2nd outfit) to see Blue Rodeo in January.
The skirt is a crackle-texture leather one that I found in the St. Vincent de Paul a couple of years ago. It makes me think of Indiana Jones. I last wore it here in October 2013 with a sleeveless jacket.
I have a long-sleeved olive tee layered under the sweater for warmth, along with brown tights and knee-high striped socks slouched down.
Mouth-breathing due to allergies
The Doc Martens are a treasure! Patti, you need to get these! I last wore them with this green sweater (same link as above) in January.

Speaking of Patti, linking up to "Visible Monday" over at Not Dead Yet Style, with my ecclectic outfit.

Outerwear shot:
"I stalk in like a boss."
Vizzini has been very happy that we're home. Much cuddling and playtime for kitty!

The stuff:
I wore the same stuff all weekend. I'm so lazy...

Jacket (Le Chateau), sweater (Wilfred, thrifted), skirt (no label, thrifted), boots (Doc Martens, consignment), scarf/gloves (Parkhurst), toque (Danier), cuff (SkinZnHydez), earrings (local).

L wanted to go look at music after brunch, so I popped downstairs to a vintage store I don't usually visit (the last time I was there they didn't have much and were only taking cash), Lovely Things Vintage.

I had better luck this time, finding this classic early 80s polyester disco dress:
It doesn't look like much on the hanger, but it's hugely flattering on. The skirt is very twirly. It has ties that start at the shoulders and tie in the back. There are little thread loops for a belt, but no belt - it was probably a "self-belt" (i.e. in the same fabric as the dress).

I liked this detail, which is something you never see in dresses anymore:
That little tab actually has a penny sewn inside it - it's attached to the inside bottom of the cowl at the back of the dress, so that the cowl stays draped perfectly. Kind of like how Coco Chanel always sewed a chain into her hems so they would hang just right.

I love vintage labels!
From what I can find on the interwebs, the Xanadu Dress Company started in 1980 and dissolved in 2000 (for "non-compliance" - sounds ominous), so my guess is accurate. I also note that the sizing of 11-12 is before the Great Size Shift of the 80s, which was in the latter part of that decade, so even more evidence that this is early 80s. I like that it's made in Canada. I paid $28.00 for this.

Today, despite the snow (all day...still snowing...still not sticking), I ventured down to Fairfield to check out My Sister's Closet. I haven't been there since early December 2013, when I had such good luck with the Hostess, here. It's such a good consignment store, I have to limit myself to going once every 2-3 months, or I'd be broke. Seriously good stuff and very reasonable prices.

I dressed for both the weather and shopping.
I've decided I don't like this dress anymore - it's in the giveaway pile now. I just don't love it, and I should love the items in my closet! (Oh, and I need room for new clothes, heh heh).

I last wore it here in January, with suede layered over it.
Same layered tee under it, some boring tights, a floral scarf for warmth. The over-the-knee boots were last seen here a couple of weeks ago with leather and leopard.

Outerwear:
Ready to shop!

Jacket (Danier, thrifted), dress (Eric Alexandre), boots (Pegabo), toque (Wooden Ships), gloves (Parkhurst), fur scarf (Danier, thrifted), silk scarf (Ralph Lauren).

I had some excellent shopping karma! I'm also armed with the big fat spring editions of the fashion magazines, and I'm thinking about what I like and don't like in Spring Fashin.

A trend I like: metallic fabrics. And here we go with this awesome skirt that was on the clearance rack:
It was marked down to $19.98, then had an extra 25% off, so it was $14.98.

It's a stiff taffeta in gun-metal grey. Shiny without being overly glare-y, if you get my drift.
A more accurate colour depiction
It's by Pink Tartan - even the buttons say "Pink Tartan".

I try not to be a brand snob - I believe that you should always go for the best quality and fit you can find, period - but I have been guilty of passing along on an item when I'm iffy on it, if it's a "fast fashion" brand like H&M.
I fell hard for this amazing print on this H&M (yes!) dress. Pastels and florals are trending heavily for spring, so I'm looking for ways to incorporate this into my style. I love a good floral print, and couldn't resist this dress.
A great mix of colours that I'll be able to match with purples, aquas and yellows. This dress is fully-lined, has pockets (yay!) and will be a fun piece to wear. This dress was on the clearance rack, marked down to $29.98 with an extra 25% off, so $22.50.

Look what else I found on the clearance rack!
Again, with the metallic look, but also with some of this Spring's de-constructed shapes. The evolution of shape in fashion is coming around to a tricky one, with very little in the way of a defined waist (my classic look). I'm all about doing my own thing, but I also don't want to look stale or stuck in an era, so I have been keeping an eye out for looser pieces that I can incorporate into my style.

This top is by Michael Kors, and as you can see it hasn't ever been worn. Tags on and everything!
And there's another reason why you should ignore size. I'm not an XS in much, but an oversized t-shirt shape? Why not? It fit! This top was marked down to $28.98 and with the extra 25% off, came to $21.75. Not bad for a top that started at $195!

I love the little fat pouffy skirts that some designers are rolling out. These are meant to be worn with a cropped top (erm, not really my thing, but never say never!), or a longer layer over them. I loved the heavy satin of this skirt - it has pockets too!
Excellent details on this, from the aforementioned pockets, to the sewn line details along the hem, to the double closure at the back of the waist: a hook/eye, plus these wonderful sparkly rhinestone buttons:
So sweet. Little hidden details like this ring my bell.

I didn't know the brand name at all, but Quillaree seems to be owned by Urban Outfitters and sold in Anthropolgie stores (which we don't have here).
I'm sure it originally sold for more than the $11.50 I paid for it!

Remember that whole "never say never" thing about cropped tops? Heh, well, I found an awesome cropped top that I think I'll be able to wear to update my Spring looks. I was careful to look for a top that hit at my waistline, and that wouldn't drown me (or make me look too booby! It's all very complicated).
Colour blown out to show the construction
It's a black top made from looping "laces" - it's a huge amount of work to sew this together. It's sort of like Battenburg lace, which is a "tape" lace. I was shocked to see that this was a Forever 21 piece - it was also very reasonably priced at $16.98.

Spring continues with the heavily embellished and richly printed textures, so this black top will work great in my wardrobe.

I couldn't put this gorgeous polyester chiffon...flowered...paisley...sheer!...ruffled!...pleated! shirt back on the rack. It's also by CAbi, which I've found is a good quality brand (washable too).
This is a black/grey and white print - and ooh, look at the pleated loose cuffs! So fun! This was $19.98, and will be a good layering piece for me.

Midi skirts are all the rage (again! how these things come around), and are being paired with cropped tops. They are also a key piece in the "long over long" looks that are appearing. When I saw this flowy caramel skirt, my breath caught.
It's a silk/cotton blend, has pockets, and is beautifully sewn. It also came with a gorgeous leather belt (which will not live with  it - that needs to go in my regular belt collection).

I started digging in the seams for tags and labels:
"Boss Orange" is what the tag on the left says; the tag on the right says it's a US size 2 (oh, no, you are so not!).

A little shell button at the hem also said "Boss Orange."
Who is this Boss Orange? I never heard of him!

Oh, wait a sec:
Hugo Boss! I have heard of that brand. This skirt was $23.50, which I think is pretty good.

Here's a shocker for me: pants!
Specifically, red and white polka dot pants! I usually don't even look at pants in second-hand stores. They're a pain to try on (I usually have tights on), and I just don't wear them that often. But polka dots!

I am not familiar with this brand either, nor do I know what size 40 is.
Apparently, she's a Canadian designer based in Paris, and her clothes have been worn a lot by the Duchess of York (there are a lot of pictures of her when I'm looking for my red polka dot pants).
My pants were made in France and were $18.98. Although the look for trousers for Spring is cropped (these are cropped), pants are structured flowy and loose on the body. Me and flowy? Bad news. But these pants are a slim cut, and remind me of pin-up girls. Now, there's a look I can get into!

Oops, nearly forgot: I found a necklace!
This was $14.98 - it's very heavy, but has no marks on it anywhere. It's quite well-made and features all kinds of animals (seriously: elephant, cows, horses, a snake, rabbits, some guy milking a cow...it's totally random).
I like the tiger heads holding the chain.

I don't really do flat oxfords, but I really liked these blue and brown Fly Girl shoes:
These were $32.95 and they are perfectly broken in.

What have you spotted for spring? What trends are you liking/loathing? You'll never catch me in a jumpsuit (again!), InStyle!

Cropped Over Long and Full - An Experiment

Monday, Monday...but today was a pretty good day, in spite of it being Monday.

I am raring to go full-on Spring, but the weather is not cooperating! I demand Spring - now!
I am quite excited about "new" Spring fashions. I like seeing different things: shapes, silhouettes, fabrics, patterns, textures. A couple of the silhouettes that are coming around again is "long over long" and "cropped with long and full" - I last remember this in the 80s, when I wore oversized sweaters of my dad's over cropped jeans, or a cropped top over a full skirt. We also did long jackets over long flowy pants back in the mid-90s (remember palazzo pants?). It's all a mish-mash.

I know what looks good on me: the hourglass silhouette. It suits my body type (boobs, little waist, hips). However, I get bored with the same looks over and over - I need change! Stimulation! Excitement!

I could have easily done this full midi-length skirt with a fitted jacket and a belted waist. I could have done this cropped top with a slim pencil skirt. But I didn't. I am an experimenter!
Top and skirt both purchased here on the weekend. The boots were last worn here in early January with plaid taffeta. I have a turquoise cami layered under the top, and patterned knee-highs on top of plain hose.

I really love this Forever 21 top - and although I will never shop in a F21, I am happy to find a good quality piece second-hand. I really like the loopy pattern of it, although the "laces" that it's made of are a little cold on the skin.

I loved the swooshiness and the sueded feel of the silk/cotton skirt - it reminds me of those sand-washed silk shirts that we all wore back in the late 80s/early 90s.
As you can see, the straight cut of the top basically negates my waist. The fullness of the skirt (layered over a slip for warmth) accentuates my narrowest point, which in this outfit is my hips. Yeah, not really my actual narrowest point! This might be a good silhouette if you wanted to disguise your waist and have narrow hips (and are 6" taller than me). It could be one of those shapes where it only looks good on models!

So, my opinion of the test-drive of this look? Liking all the elements, but not how they go together. I did enjoy wearing this outfit, and I don't regret trying something out of my wheelhouse. I'll play with these again in a week or so and do more of my classic shape.

The stuff:
The shark ring is too big (even for my thumb!) and is going in the giveaway pile.

Top (Forever 21, consignment), skirt (Boss Orange, consignment), boots (Marc), earrings (Le Chateau), shark ring (local), Fulvia Ring (Wendy Brandes).

I was freezing in my outfit all day. Guess why?
Snow! In February! In Victoria! This is just unheard of. Who do I talk to about getting Spring underway?

Simple Floral for Spring

And just like that, the weather changes. Today, crisp and clear - and sun!
Thank you very much, I am taking full credit for this with all my yellow of the past week, and today's all floral outfit.

I would have liked this better with lavender tights, but I don't have lavender tights. And since this is the first time I've wanted them in about 5 years, I guess I don't need them that badly. The grey tights worked fine.
My lovely H&M floral dress, purchased on consignment here last weekend (which already feels so long ago).

This is much more traditional shape for me, and feels more me than yesterday's outfit. Thank you all for your supportive comments and feedback! I will try, try, try again.
As you can see, I can't take my hands out of my pockets! There should be a law that all skirts and dresses have pockets.

The stuff:
Did you notice my floral "camo" necklace? It filled in the neckline nicely - the dress is a little big on me, and I don't need to show off the girls at work (I also have a grey cami on underneath).

I was going to wear my lavender booties (these ones), but we're in the middle of opening another office, so I've been doing a lot of (literal) running around. It will be low shoes for me for the rest of the week. I love these Neosens - I last wore them here in January while pretending to be a director.

Floral bling:
I love mixes of purples and pinks. I have to find a pink outfit for Anti-Bullying Day tomorrow!

Dress (H&M, consignment), shoes (Neosens), necklace (local), cuff (thrifted), earrings (vintage).

Wearing Pink and Officer Vizzini on the Lookout

My workplace supports Pink Shirt Day, supporting anti-bullying (link). I was bullied badly when I was quite young; school was a nightmare for me until I hit Grade 8, so this is something I wholeheartedly support.
I wore this same jacket last year (here). My outfit's a little blander today because I had a lot of physical work to do, getting the new office set up. I was at work tonight until 9pm working on documents, floor plans, etc. and I'll be working late again tomorrow night for the actual move.

I'm fond of velvet in general, and of this jacket in particular. I love the dusty pink colour and it's a very soft cotton velvet. Also, mondo-ruching is always fun. I last wore it here (2nd outfit) in October 2013 with burgundys and purples.
Someone is photo-bombing me
The floral blouse underneath was last seen in August 2013 (here). It's a slightly dated style (those little puffy sleeves are so 2007!), but I still like the mix of colours.

The skirt is a bias cut soft grey with a pinstripe, and excellent Swoosh Factor. At least an 8. I wore it last here in December 2013.
Vizzini is trying to go under my skirt
My boots are my standard riding style ones (last seen here (2nd outfit) a couple of weekends ago) that need replacing. Hmmm...it's nearly time for L and I to make our annual pilgrimage to Fluevog in Vancouver! Melanie, are you in for meeting for another boozy brunch?

The stuff:
Simple pieces that didn't get in the way while I was out and about.

Blazer (Nougat, consignment), blouse (Esprit, consignment), skirt (Planet, thrifted), boots (Aldo, consignment), necklace (Shi Studio), earrings (don't remember).

I was actually running early this morning, so of course I stopped to take some kitty pictures.
"No, leave me alone! I'm sleeping!"
Bah, he has all day to sleep while I'm at work!

Such a face!
"Who dares disturb my slumber?!"
There was some chin-scratching and belly tickling (followed by claws and bitey, but in a playful way). He then got distracted by the seagulls on the neighbouring building's roof.
"Gotta go, ma'am. Protecting the neighbourhood, you know."
And off I go as well.

Secondhand Thursday, Friday and Saturday: Skulls, Polka Dots and Robin Hood

You may have seen my "Secondhand First" button on my sidebar.

In January 2013, inspired by The Citizen Rosebud's pledge*, I committed to shopping secondhand first, followed by locally-made and/or designed and ethically-made. If you've ever check out my "clothes credits," you'll notice that a lot of my clothing is secondhand. And of course, I yak about my shopping a fair bit.

Anyway, I'm participating in her first link-up: go here and check out all the other awesome and fabulous bloggers who eschew new!
-------------------------

Oh my gosh, am I glad it is the weekend; it has been a crazy few days. I moved 18 people to a new office on Thursday night, and worked a lot of extra hours (11, to be precise).

But I did it in style! And it went off without a hitch. Ta-dah!
On Thursday, I needed to kick butt to get everything packed, moved and unpacked again, so I dressed the part - skulls!

I've had this skull-licious cardigan for about 3-4 years and it's getting a little worn. It is an item I bought new prior to my decision to shop ethically, but it's such a fun piece that every time I wear it, it earns a reprieve from being tossed in the donate pile. I even bought the matching pullover and sent it as a gift to Sal at Already Pretty*. I last wore it here (way down at the bottom) over Christmas 2013 with polka-dotted tights.
I did red tights this time, to go with the red cami and the red bow of the skull on the back.

I've seen metallic fabrics popping up here and there, and so when I saw this sweet steel grey skirt on the clearance rack at My Sister's Closet for $14.98 (here, last weekend), I snatched it up. With all the longer midi-length skirts proliferating, I'm feeling like I want some contrast with this mini (for me) length.
My spectacular "demented elf boots," as L calls them, aka the  Fluevog Prepare Guides, were last worn here (2nd outfit) for a casual outfit on a November 2013 weekend. They were awesome for stomping around authoritatively, although around 7:30 pm when I was unpacking the new office's kitchen and supply room, I had taken them off.

A shout-out to Fluevog, for being ISO certified for ethical production! Check it out in their FAQ here*.
  • All of our factories are ISO 9002 certified, which is primarily an international quality certification, that relates to consistency and standards of production and quality. In addition to that, from an ethical standard, our factories fully comply with the Labour Law of the PRC act of 2007 (also know as the Worker's Rights Act of 2008). This brings all of our factories in line with "Western" labour standards, and is checked regularly.
The stuff:
More skulls! All handmade, local jewelry.

Sweater (Kersh), skirt (Pink Tartan, consignment), boots (Prepare Guide, Fluevog), earrings (local), red/silver ring (Oscar & Libby's), spinner ring (Twang & Pearl, consignment).

After putting in a 14-hour day on Thursday, I came home and crashed - hence the lack of a post. Back to work a mere 6 hours later, I saved my favourite pre-planned outfit for last.
One of my favourite outfits ever!
I loved this outfit, loved these pants, adore this shirt and felt large and in charge on Friday. I worked like a madwoman all day, managed to get out on time (hurray!) and went to a pub for one of my coworkers' retirement send-off, then bused over to a local vintage fair with two other coworkers for a couple of hours, followed by a fabulous dinner at a local bistro. I staggered home at 11 pm to hang with L for another hour before calling it a night.

Whew, life is busy. And so are my patterns! Both my blouse and pants were purchased last weekend on consignment here.

Starting with this amazing blouse, which is a glorious paisley. Although the "black" is actually a very dark green, it perceives as black or dark grey, so let's go with that. I own a couple of other CAbi pieces (this wondrously ruffled blouse and this fitted brown leather vest, both purchased secondhand), and I like the quality. This blouse fits me perfectly.

I wore the collar buttoned right to the top, and the ruffles down the front and at the cuffs are actually pleats. I have a thrifted vintage cream camisole underneath.
But I know you are giggling with the gleefulness that is these pants! Don't you just love them? They were a joy to wear; they had just the right amount of stretch, they are a polished cotton, so they have a teensy bit of sheen to the fabric's finish, and the length and cut are perfect on my body. They also have a side hidden zipper, and a good rise (not too low, but not high-waisted), and are by Tara Jarmon, made in France.
I got lots of compliments on this outfit. People responded really well to the pattern-mixing. The keys here are that there are two neutrals - white and black - with one colour, and that one pattern is a regular geometric and the other is an organic paisley/floral. I also like how the movement of the blouse contrasted with the straight cut of the pants.

For my outerwear, I have been digging into some of my winter-spring transitional items, like my leathers and my mid-weight coats. This long velvet and plaid wool and satin coat is a favourite.
It's by Vassali and is made in France, and I bought it on consignment a couple of years ago. A vendor at the Vintage Fair was very taken with it and called it "a masterpiece."

The stuff:
Thrifted shoes! I last wore them here for a couple of hours in January when I was sick. For the amount of walking I did in these (barefoot!), they held up really well. My feet were very tired by the time I got home!

Blouse (CAbi, consignment), pants (Tara Jarmon, consignment), shoes (Town Shoes, thrifted), earrings (the Cobbler).

I was a little disappointed in the Vintage Fair this time around - a lot of the same vendors, and even some of the same stock that I've seen 3-4 times or more.

However, I did have a little luck at Zenkat Vintage's* booth, as I did last May (here, purchases from her shown, way down). Her booth and pieces are well-presented, and she has very good prices. I saw a lot of comparable items at other tables/booths for a lot more money!

Enough blathering, here's what I got:
The circular necklace isn't made of real pearls, of course, but it is strung/woven with thread and knotted to the clasp, which is an inexpensive metal. I like the bold shape of the necklace and it lays perfectly on my collarbone. Although it's probably from the 60s, this is a timeless piece. It was $5.00.

I can't resist rhinestones, but I'm really picky about them. I prefer them to be stamped, and in really good condition. I like an unusual colour and shape, which these curved champagne-coloured beauties have.
They're stamped "Weiss" - according to the interwebs, the block capitals name was the first mark used by this company, starting in 1942. Cool. These may actually be from the 50s.

Today, I slept in and then L and I went to Floyd's for brunch with Nick. I dressed for utter and complete comfort. I ended up looking like Robin Hood. Sure, let's go with a light cosplay look - it's the weekend, so why not?
The soft green tee is a layering piece that I usually wear around the house. I used to wear these tops for work on casual days, but I prefer a more dressy look now that I am an old bag, hee.

This caramel sweater is soft and loose. I last wore it here in December 2013 for a casual Book Club look. It was thrifted for $13.50 and I've worn it four times, so I'm at just over $3 a wear.
Realizing I've forgotten to put my lips on. Vizzini's up to no good.
The skirt is my olive-green washable suede Danier maxi, thrifted a few years ago for $10.50.
I last wore it here (2nd outfit) in December 2013, also for Saturday brunch. I do like maxi skirts for weekends!

When I did the stair shot, I didn't think it was that cold out, so I wore a jean jacket and no scarf or gloves out.
Wrong move. It started to snow lightly while we were in town. Good thing we were barely outdoors!

The stuff:
My first wear of these so-ugly-they're-awesome Fly Girl shoes, purchased on consignment here last weekend. They were pretty comfy, but admittedly, I only wore them for a couple of hours, and I was sitting most of the time. I'll do another outfit with them soon.

Leather bling:
Both cuffs are locally-made. Those earrings are home-grown vintage - I bought them in 1994 when I worked at LA Express (a former division of Suzy Shier in Canada).

Sweater (Coldwater Creek, thrifted), skirt (Danier Leather, thrifted), belt (Plum), shoes (Fly Girl, consignment), airplane cuff (Catalyst Leather), gear cuff (SkinZnHydez), earrings (LA Express, 90s).

And now, off to make chili for the Oscars tomorrow! L and I have our friend Elaine over. We do our own ballots, eat, drink wine and Elaine and I check out what everyone's wearing. Tonight, L and I are going to be chillin' with Vizzini and playing board games (there may be more wine involved), and detoxing from our long work-week.

Wishing all of you an awesome weekend! I'll be back on Monday.

*in all cases linking 'cause I love - I get nothing but good vibes from these fine people

More Experimentation - Cropped, Copper and a Pouf (and Cat Pictures)

The weekend went so fast! It was very relaxing and chill, but I seriously need more time off! Ah well.

So, I'm playing around with more shapes this week, and seeing if there's something usable or workable on my body. Today, fitted, cropped and poufy.
Just as an FYI, every main item I'm wearing is second-hand or locally-made. Only my cheapass ball earrings were purchased new/manufactured overseas, and those were bought a few years ago.

Following on my not-as-successful-as-I'd-hoped cropped over full look of last week (this outfit), I've tweaked it and am trying again.
Black cropped leather jacket (last seen here in late January with blurry florals), but a closer fit to the body instead of a boxy shape. Slim-fitting thin copper sweater (first seen here in January with a Dior-ish circle skirt).

Pouf-o-matic skirt! I liked the pouf versus the slim-fitting top and jacket. What do you think?
I bought the skirt on consignment a couple of weekends ago (here). It felt a wee bit short (but heck, I like my legs, so why not) but was mitigated by the pockets. I do have sheer micro-fishnets on, so not bare legs.

The stuff:
These shoes were quite stiff when I first bought them (thrifted new!) but they're loosening up well. I haven't worn them since October (here with a rampant lion), but they are keepers.

Big barnyard bling:
One elephant, horses, cows (being milked), goats, a snake, and tiger heads. This necklace makes no sense at all, but I like it.

Jacket (Danier Couture, consignment), sweater (Main Fung, thrifted), skirt (Quillaree, consignment), shoes (Ramon Tenza, thrifted), necklace (consignment), Death Star Ring (Stone Roses), spinner ring (Twang & Pearl), earrings (Aldo Accessories).

Last night, L, Elaine and I watched the Oscars. I want more gown action on the red carpet. Stop talking to Sidney Poitier and show me that crazy dress in the background. Um, I digress.

Elaine brought over this amazing vintage suede skirt for me:
It's a brick red, and the suede is about 1/4 inch thick - it weighs about 5 pounds on its own! She wore this in the 70s, but then got it cleaned and it shrunk a couple of sizes and doesn't fit her anymore.
I will give it a good home - I love it! Thanks, Elaine!

I managed to snag a picture of Vizzini on Saturday while I was writing my big wrap-up post:
"I love you, purr purr purr."
Sucky lovey cat. He crawls under the fleece blanket and will sleep there for a couple of hours, all snuggly warm. I got Lovey Eyes when I took this. He's not always psycho-eyed!

On Saturday night, L and I hung out and drank wine and played board games. Vizzini deigned to snooze near us.
"Let a cat nap in peace."
Sneetching like a little pasha.

Secondhand and Also Local - Leia Jacket and Morena Skirt

$

Ah, this week is so much better. I'm actually out of work on time, and able to take a deep breath. Of course, tonight is my WW meeting night, so in a few minutes it's off to catch the bus - home at 8pm. A long day.
I think my group will like this outfit. They like when I pull out the "cray-cray" (as the cool kids used to say, and now we dodgy old farts say, thinking we are cool). No fashion magazine is showing this wacky ensemble, but I like it. It's me.

Starting off with my fabulous Leia jacket, bought secondhand, and (as I discovered later), locally made by Bonspiel. I last wore it here in October 2013 with navy blue.
The skirt is a marvel and a wonder - I bought it on consignment as well. It's by local designer Morena, and I've seen the exact same one new in a local boutique for over $100. I last wore it here in January with caramel velvet.
The tights have a fun geometric square pattern going on, in tones of grey. My half-slip is just peeking out in a couple of pictures. It's a grey satin with light grey lace and it's a vintage Christian Dior - got that at the thrift store a few years ago!

The stuff:
I bought my shoes on deep discount at a local store (shop local!), but they are handmade in the US. They're by Cydwoq, which I first heard about probably in 2008 or 2009 from Audi over at Fashion for Nerds (sadly, she rarely posts anymore). I would buy more Cydwoqs, but I hate buying online. I want to see, touch, feel and try on! My local shop doesn't carry them anymore.

Some badass bling today, including my zipper rose.
Vizzini tried to maw on it when I picked him up.

Big bold bling:
Everyone needs a grommet belt.

Jacket (Leia Jacket, Bonspiel, consignment), skirt (Morena, consignment), slip (vintage Christian Dior, thrifted), shoes (Cydwoq), belt (gift from Ruth), earrings (Joyce's, vintage 80s), lapis lazuli ring/Fulvia Ring (Wendy Brandes), pin (Victoria & Albert Museum Gift Shop).

Blue and Concrete Leather

Woo! L and I are back from the gym and full of yummy spaghetti, and ready to watch "American Idol" (guilty pleasure).

Here we go - outfit!
Ever since I did two all-neutral months (June 2012 recap, November 2012 recap) in my "30 For 30 For 12" year-long capsule challenge (about it here), I've been working to include more neutrals in my outfit. This is nearly an all-neutral outfit, aside from the few pops of blue in it. I consider the denim-y jacket a neutral.

The jacket is locally made, and I bought it on consignment back in 2012; last wore it here in October 2013. This is how I do cropped: fitted, close to the body, but still a boxy shape. It's all about cut.
It's hard to see, but I'm wearing a navy blue blouse under the jacket - last seen here (barely) in October with a sleeveless jacket. Here's a time where I wore it in the summer, so you can see what a lovely blouse it was.

This is easily the least expensive leather skirt I own (and you know I own a lot!) - I paid $7.50 for it and this is its second wear, so I'm down to $3.75 per wear. I last wore it here with stripes in January.
I had been considering not keeping it, despite my love for it. The concrete grey is not a usual colour for me. I'm also in "weeding out my closet" mode, since I'll be doing the Great Seasonal Wardrobe Changeover at the end of the month. However, I liked wearing it a lot today, and the leather feels wonderful. Keep for now.

The stuff:
I love these shoes so much, and I'm going to be heartbroken when they finally are too bashed up to wear. They seem to take a beating, more than my other shoes. Bows make me happy! I last wore them here in January with ruffles and red leather.

Blue bling!
They're looking at you.

Jacket (Alison Wonderland, consignment), blouse (Mexx, consignment), skirt (no label, thrifted), shoes (Jeffrey Campbell), earrings (local), lapis lazuli ring (Wendy Brandes).

Rusty 70s, Floral and a Cat-Bomb

Today started off with rain (rainrainrain, it never stops!), but ended sunny, and with the appearance of blue skies, my spirits were lifted! It's like magic!
What else lifted my spirits? This springy outfit! At the last minute I swapped out my Boss Orange full skirt for this hand-me-over vintage suede 70s skirt of Elaine's. Good call, methinks.

For one, it matches my hair - like, exactly! How cool. There are no markings anywhere on the skirt, but since Elaine has had it...since the 70s, I'm going with...the 70s! I love it, and I love having something of hers. I met her in the bathroom at my old job, and we hit it off right away, being the only two people on the entire floor with any kind of fashion-sense. From now on, this is my Elaine Skirt.
Na nana nana nana - CAT BOMB!
The cardigan was feeling "meh" to me until I wore it again. I love the springy colours in it, the soft peach, brown, rust and light teal. I haven't worn it since April 2013 here - shocking! - I obviously left it in the autumn/winter wardrobe thinking I would wear it with all my fall colours. Yeah, no.
"I am a cat-bomb, gonna bomb your pictures, woman."
I wore a camisole under the cardi (boobular region coverage) and a full vintage slip under that. I wasn't sure how well the snaps would stay done up on the skirt, so I was covering my bases. I'm happy to report there were no Snap Malfunctions. The skirt weighed a ton, though.

I grabbed El Gato Monstro for a snuggle:
Little bugger went right for my earring.
"Na nana nana nana, I bite the things."
Ouch face.

The stuff:
I liked how the teal-y shade of these shoes went with the cardigan and the rusty skirt. I last wore them here in January with red leather pants.

Big copper bling:
I love my copper pieces.

Cardigan (Mexx, consignment), cami (Esprit), skirt (gift from Elaine, vintage 70s), shoes (Nine West, thrifted), copper necklace/bracelet (vintage 70s), earrings (locally made), belt (Club Monaco).

Weekend Wrap-Up: Formal Friday, Flower Potted, Saturday Brunch and Hat Shopping, and Cat Pictures

$

I need a weekend to recover from my weekend! But I shall enjoy my quiet Sunday.

To be fair, I did have a piece of denim on, so my Friday wasn't entirely formal.
Glitter! These pictures don't do the disco-ball-of-a-shirt justice - it was very, very sparkly!

I picked up this shirt on consignment a couple of weekends ago (here) for $21.75 (regular $169, according to the tags on it still). It was lovely to wear (I had a vintage camisole on under it), but by the end of the day, the neckline and sleeve areas of my skin were all red and irritated from the prickliness of the sequins.
I loved the shape of it, though. Looking forward to wearing it for spring!

The skirt is my very-high-waisted vintage Nicole Miller, last seen here in August 2013 (zoiks!), with a studded sweatshirt.
The tights are actually footless, so I can only wear them with short boots. I love the little silver paillettes on them.

It's warmed up the last few days slightly, so out comes the leather!
Howdy, howdy!

The stuff:
Comfy boots - I last wore them here in February for Dress Week Came From Outer Space! Other than that, just the usual shiny stuff.

Top (Michael Kors, consignment), skirt (Nicole Miller, vintage 80s, consignment), boots (Aersoles, consignment), cuffs (both thrifted), earrings (white gold, Francis Jewellers, gift from L).

Vizzini has been sulking - he wants to go out on the deck.
"I'm going to eat something of yours if you don't let me out."
Soon, buddy!

On Friday night, we rushed home from work to get ready for another Urbanite at the Art Gallery. The new exhibit opening is Carole Sabiston's "Everything Below All of the Above" and featured her textile art. It was cool. Elaine and I made buttons and wandered through the gallery, while people-watching. I do love to check out the clothes!

I had to go to town for my outfit. This will be my next Hat Attack! entry over at Judith's Style Crone, and this is also my "Visible Monday" outfit at Patti's Not Dead Yet Style.
My Garden of Flowers dress and my Flower Pot hat both make appearances! I wore the dress to a brief burlesque event here (way, way down) in January, the day that I got it.

I got a ton of compliments on the dress and hat at the Gallery.
I had to wear walkin' shoes to stroll the few blocks to the Gallery from home. I last wore these here in January.

I did a big back-combed bouf of my bangs (I looked a little like "Ziggy Stardust"-era David Bowie, to suit the shape of the hat. Much product and hairspray were required.
Bathroom mirror selfie
I last wore the hat for the Steam Expo in April 2012. I bought it on consignment for around $24 about 20 years ago. I think I've worn it about 6 times total.

I did Drama make-up too:
A bit hard to see, but I did "wings" of my eyeliner and shiny copper eyeshadow, along with orange lips. I like the orange lipstick trend that's coming for Spring. I'm all over that trend!

I used my copper brooch to pull the back of the dress in a little bit and give it more shape.
It was dark by the time we headed to the Gallery - we left early and cabbed over to a friend's place afterwards for a 50th birthday party. Happy Birthday, Helene!

And my first wear of the sweet little furry stole that I thrifted for $10.50 over Christmas 2013 (here, way down at the bottom).
Added my purple leather gloves, my black Liz Claiborne purse and I was a plethora of texture!

L also looked amazingly dapper, in his yellow dress shirt, cream plaid wool vintage vest, vintage Christian Dior tie and his Tommy Hilfiger jacket.
He wore teal skinny jeans, and a two-tone pair of Fluevogs. We were a dashing couple!

The stuff:
A better look at the green shoes.

And a blown-out shot of the Flower Pot hat.
I clipped my little lone copper earring over the feather stems. There is still some copper wire from my steampunk outfit on there, but it's keeping the feathers secure.

Lots of vintage copper bling.
So fun! And that was only Friday!

Dress (vintage, thrifted), hat (vintage, consignment), shoes (Fly London), all copper jewelry (vintage, Renoir), copper pin (vintage, thrift).

L and I went to Floyd's for brunch, as is our usual Saturday. He'd wanted to wear a hat with his outfit on Friday, but I thought he needed a brown hat - which he doesn't have - so that was the Mission after lunch.
Barely any make-up, and minimal effort extended on the outfit. Dress, tights, boots, stuff.

It felt like wearing pajamas, but was not, *ahem* people who wear pajamas in public(!).
I last wore this here in February for the last Dress Week.
It poured rain as we walked around town, but at least it was warmer out! I last wore these boots in January (here) while thrift shopping.

Outerwear:
I adore this vintage 70s leather coat - I still boggle that it was only $18.50. Wearing one of my Vera vintage silk scarves with it - I also had my cream toque and gloves, which I wore off and on.

The stuff:
Usual weekend-y type stuff. Leather, metal, all local, except for the earrings which are homegrown vintage from a store I worked in during the mid-90s.

Dress (Kensie), boots (Miz Mooz), coat (vintage 70s, thrifted), scarf (Vera, thrifted, vintage 60s), cuffs (SkinZnHydez and Catalyst Leather), leaf cuff (About Tine), earrings (LA Express, 90s).

L and I went to Roberta's Hats (THE hat shop in town), where he found a dashing brown fedora, and I fell in love with this Canadian-made lady bowler. It was $68.95 - thank you for buying it for me, L!
We went to Flavour Upstairs, one of my super-secret vintage/thrift stores. They carry a bit of menswear, so we scoped for things for L (no luck), but I did rather well.

This gorgeous vintage faux-fur coat was marked down half price, for $27.99. It's a very dark brown, and has no brand label, although it does have the content tag.
It has nearly no wear on it, so I think it's just been sitting in a closet for years! I will give it a good home, although it's not going to get a lot of wear until next winter.

I also fell in lurve with this real fur hat.
It's so crazy, but I had to have it.

Also, only $12.99
Andre Hats of Montreal has been around for over 50 years. Dig that awesome vintage label and lining!

I spotted this classic linen-look pencil skirt.
Not actually stained cross the middle - it's wet from the rain.
 Great colour and fit.
Marked down to $9.99 - you can see the nice texture there. It's even machine washable! It's by Conrad C.

This necklace isn't top of the line quality, but I loved the cameo.
I think it's modern, but it was only $10.

I also found this lovely silk scarf for only $5:
Cat not included
It has no label or signature, but it's soft and I love the colours/pattern.

I wore it today for a stroll down to get groceries and a quick browse through another thrift store (no luck). See how big it is?
Matching my clothes to my hair again too!

I last wore this sweater in November 2013 (here), with cobalt blue.
The leather skirt gets its second wear, first seen here in January with yellow.
I love the white stitching on it.

The boots are my Mini Babycakes by Fluevog, last seen here in January with caramel and black.

Outerwear:
By the time I strolled home, the sun was out! What a treat! This coat was just right, and the silk scarf (Remoy d'Urville) wasn't needed anymore, likewise the fingerless gloves.

The stuff:
Bigass cameo and key earrings.

Sweater (Bandolino, thrifted), skirt (Danier Leather, thrifted), boots (Mini Babycakes, Fluevog), cameo (thrifted), earrings (local), coat (vintage 70s, thrifted), scarf (thrifted, vintage, Remoy d'Urville).

It was warm enough to open one of the deck doors for Vizzini - he was so happy!
"Back off, woman, I'm behind on my patrols."
 Officer Vizzini checks out everything.
He's very stretchy
There are little birds in the oak trees.
"Must...track...all...birds."
 This is the funniest pose.
"I'll just sit right he-- birds!"
I hope your weekend was full of fun!

Oh, spring is in the air! And in my clothes. I am jonesing for my spring/summer wardrobe, and am excited about doing the Grand Swap at the end of the month.
Three items I will NOT be getting rid of (and which will be staying in my spring/summer closet) are this top, this skirt and these shoes. Love 'em all.

I last wore the blouse here in February with a jacket. I didn't need a jacket today!
I really love how this blouse goes with everything! Today, I popped this skirt against it (there is a little bit of blue in the berries in the fruit part of the floral of the shirt).
I last wore this gorgeous vintage cerulean skirt here in January with black and white. I just realized that neither my blouse nor my skirt have labels in them. Weird.

The stuff:
My totally neutral metallic shoes were last seen - whoa, can this be right? - back here in August 2013 with a red red dress.

It's hard to see my necklace against my pasty skin, but I liked how ladylike it made me look (not act, ha).
The cross pin is actually at the back of the blouse, at the top of the neck. There's supposed to be a button and loop there, but it's missing, so I just pinned it. I'm so creative.

Blouse (no label, thrifted), skirt (no label, handmade, vintage, thrifted), shoes (Ralph Lauren, thrifted), belt (Plum), necklace (vintage, thrifted), bracelet (faux Gucci, gift from Mom and Dad from the 80s), pin (L's Grandma W), earrings (Aldo Accessories), lapis lazuli/Fulvia ring (Wendy Brandes).
