Weekend Wrap-up: Floral Punk, Red Leather and Orange Leather (and Shopping)

Woo, what a weekend! I need another one, please.

Friday:
Casual office punk, that's me. I had to wear my new Docs!

The cardigan was last seen here in October, under my red plaid dress.
The peach satin blouse gets its second wearing, first seen here in September with my cognac leather pants.
This funky brown skirt was last worn here in October with a much more normal jacket and sweater (and a lion).
This is how the skirt is sewn; it's basically a big square.

My outerwear consisted of a nice thick leather jacket and my furry scarf, plus toque and gloves.
My purple rocker purse completes it.

Getting my funk on with Bella's "Shoe Shine" over at Citizen Rosebud! Are you in? You totally should be!
Her theme is "Glitterati", but I'm way more whackadoo than that! Did you notice my two pairs of crazy socks? These Doc Martens were incredibly comfy all day - I actually wore them twice this weekend, I loved them so much.

The stuff:
The more bling, the better, I say!

Sweater (Kersh), blouse (Mark, thrifted), skirt (La Fleur de Mon Secret, consignment), shoes (Doc Martens, consignment), belt/buckle (Shi Studio; buckle thrifted), leather cuff (Catalyst Leather), gear cuff (SkinZnHydez), necklace (gift from Mom), leaf necklace (thrifted, vintage), pink rose (thrifted).

My Friday work-day was insanely busy, but I ran out to try and find a sweater for Ugly Christmas Sweater day. What did I buy? Not an ugly sweater.
I did find this amazing Club Monaco skirt for $20.00 on consignment). It has box pleats all around it, and check it out:
They actually lined up the fabric so that the paisleys still have their shape! That's a huge waste of fabric (economy-wise) in manufacturing, so it's a very high mark of quality. I'm pretty excited about this skirt. Bizarrely, on Saturday when I was out doing the last of my Christmas shopping for L, I spotted this exact skirt in a thrift store (for $3.00 less) in a different size.

I also found a sweater, although it isn't ugly.
I actually bought a whole bunch of really tacky, glittery Christmas decorations from the dollar store, and I'm going to sew them all over this sweater so that I can wear it for real. I just couldn't face buying something crappy, even for fun.

Plus, it was a great piece:
It's by Dale Norway (and made in Norway, not surprisingly), it's 100% merino wool and it was $16.95. Hey, here it is on their site - it's called "Slaata Feminine". Oh my goodness...their sweaters start at $199.00 and go up to $318.00. *choke*

Okay, I am definitely NOT going to be glue-gunning decorations to this sweater!

On Saturday, L and I walked to town to have breakfast and wrap up our shopping for each other.
I've decided to get rid of this skirt. The quality is not that great, and I don't like the fadedness of the reds in it.

This cardigan is one of my trusty cotton ones. I haven't worn it since March (it was packed away with the winter stuff), here, with...what do you know? The same skirt! I actually last wore the skirt later on in March (here).
I only wore this without my outerwear while we were in the diner; I spent the rest of the afternoon trudging around from store to store, avoiding the mall. I managed to do most of my shopping ethically (either second-hand, thrift or locally made), which feels good.
The fabulous boots were great for a day of walking. I last wore them here in November to see Lindi Ortega.

Outerwear:
It's been much warmer lately so I've been able to wear my leathers instead of the Unsafe Polar Bear coat.

Cardigan (Press), top (Ricki's, thrifted), skirt (Dolcezza), boots (Adrian Agnes, Fluevog), belt (Plum), cuff (Rimanchik), necklace (Raven's Rest Studio).

Today, I wandered to town to get groceries and meet up with Elaine for brunch. I knew I wouldn't have my outerwear off much if at all, so I dressed for that.
Black as a base layer. This is my fabulous black shirtdress, last seen here in October with a lot of red accents (including the above red boots).

The tights are footless; I picked them up for myself for $15.00 while out and about (I can't say the name of the store or L will know what I bought him there). The dots are actually little metal shiny bits stuck on, and they are only below the knee.
Floral earrings, my Tony Llama belt (with Shi Studio buckle), L's cufflinks. Simple accessories.
And my same docs as on Friday! They were heavenly once again. They're getting softer. Love!

The outerwear:
Orange leather, red gloves and an orange, pink and red Ralph Lauren silk scarf. A man in the produce section complimented me on my colours.

Elaine and I popped into a thrift store I don't usually visit, and I had a bit of luck.
For $11.00 total, I got this full set of Duralex bowls (nice for fruit salad?). They're made in France.

I also found this copper leather thin obi-style wrap belt.
Only $4.50! A good deal, in my books.

I got the stink-eye from L for buying these but aren't they gorgeous?
They are Neosens (the style is called Croatina), which are hand-made in Spain. The original price was $310.00 and they were on half-price as the last pair for $155.00.

But ribbon laces!
And leather flowers! And such a beautiful colour.

The sole is a lace-print!
I've been very good this year - Santa would approve, I'm sure.

Hope your weekend has been as fun as mine!

Shiny Paisley and Brown Tweed

Ooh, the holidays are getting closer! This is my last Monday before a week off!
I can't resist wearing a new item right away - I never understood people who buy things and then don't use them right away. In this case, both the belt and the skirt are new-to-me, purchased on the weekend here.
I loved wearing this today - the skirt didn't wrinkle from sitting (I was afraid it would), nor did it snag on anything.

The jacket is a lovely dark green and brown silk and wool tweed that I've had for about a couple of years - it's hard to see but it actually has a sparkly copper thread running through it. I haven't worn it since February, here, and if you scroll down there's a picture of the stuff against the background of the jacket where you can see the shiny thread.
I bought it for on half-price at a thrift store for $2.50. Pretty sure that's the least I've ever paid for a blazer!

The stuff:
I went with these nice caramel leather Ralph Lauren pumps to go with the coppers and the orangey/brown shade of the skirt. I last wore them here in November, again with copper.

Big copper bling:
All my bling is big...

Blazer (David Findlay, thrifted), skirt (Club Monaco, consignment), shoes (Ralph Lauren), obi (thrifted), brooch (vintage, thrifted), earrings (Renoir, vintage 60s, Grandma J's).

Space Flowers

It's getting so close! Three more days and I am on vacation!
More shine today! Note the bizarre pink light in my outdoor stair shot. These are my new grey floral tights - the pattern is not printed on them, but actually woven into them.

This super-shiny jacket always elicits comments. I may have made the "live long and prosper" Spock sign at a few people. I last wore it in August here - I think I will have to call it my "beam me up" jacket.
I like to contrast the space-age-y-ness of the jacket - today's outfit features ruffles and flowers to counteract the shine and angular cut of the jacket. I'm wearing a fuscia pink satin blouse (last seen here in July with my ginormous plaid skirt) under it that has ruffles down the front.
My skirt is like, totally tubular (only people who remember "Valley Girl" will get that). I haven't worn it since I got my last tattoo back here in November. It's very comfy.

By the way, this is the reason for the pink light on me on the stairs this morning.
So completely gorgeous - but "red at morning, sailors' warning"! It is indeed now raining. Blergh.

The stuff:
My shoes aren't really the right pinky-red for the rest of the pinky tones in my outfit, but I don't care. I love them and hug them and call them George, anyway. I bought them on the weekend, here. They were lovely and comfortable (a small bit of a rub above my ankle that will loosen up as the leather softens). And I'm off to wear them to my WW meeting - last one of the year!

Futuristic floral bling.
Zipper rose!

Jacket (Smoking Lily), blouse (Esprit, consignment), skirt (Isda), tights (Hue), shoes (Neosens), obi (Smoking Lily, consignment), rose (Victoria and Albert Museum Gift Shop), earrings (gift from Lise).

Red Dress Pirate and Ticked Kitty

Such a long day...but it will be worth it to have time off! I'll be taking a bit of a break next week, but rest assured, I will be back before next weekend.
Of course, I have to wear my beautiful red dress (yes, that's a dress under there) for the Christmas season.

I last wore this dress here in August - you can see it all on its own there.
Yar, that be a pirate shirt, matey! Well, at least a 90s goth shirt...made of suede! I first wore the shirt/jacket/top here in November with a plethora of purples.
Bronze tights (very old and starting to get little holes and snags, sigh), and for once, practical heels.

The stuff:
Lovely comfy kitten heels, first seen here earlier this month with cerulean and leopard.

Top (Danier Leather, thrifted), dress (Calvin Klein), shoes (Town Shoes, thrifted), belt (gift from Mom), earrings (Plum).

Vizzini was scoping out the neighbours again this morning:
Or maybe he just likes the warm air that comes up from the heaters under the window?

Sorry, buddy, gotta go to work.
"I don't want you to go"
He was either really sad or quite ticked that I was leaving.

Granny Chic Christmas and a Funny Kitty

And the countdown is on! One more sleep till vacation!

As you may or may not know (a speech I did, Stuff About Me), I used to work in a year-round Christmas store. For 11 years I wore the most garish colours to work every day: a red polo shirt and a green vest that said "Number One Elf" on the back. I may also have worn pleated khakis, but it was the 90s!
So here's my ode to my old work clothes! I've always liked classic shapes with a good splash of bling - it reminds me of how my grandmothers dressed when I was a kid.

This jacket is part of my $18.00 thrifted vintage suit, last seen here a couple of weeks ago the day the power went out. Once again, I loved wearing it, this time belted with the sleeves rolled.

The floral blouse under it was last worn on my birthday week in October (here). I liked the ruffled effect at the neckline - I have a teal cami on under it. It's a great blouse for pulling interesting colours together because it has about 8 colours in it, but it's predominantly neutral.
My dark teal skirt, last seen here (3rd outfit, one of my favourites) in October, was such a pleasure to wear today while running about. No wrinkles, and it is just the right length.
I was a little worried about how well the jacket would belt because it's a boxier cut from the early 60s, but the skinny belt worked just right.

The stuff:
I usually pack these shoes away with my spring/summer stuff, but this year I decided to keep them out for dressier outfits. They're such a pretty colour of grey-ish green, and I love the little blingy buckle with the green snake trim. I last wore them here last March (I have blonde hair!).

Mismatched bling:
Vintage necklace and brooch; new rings and earrings.

Jacket (Hettermans, vintage early 60s, W&J Wilson, thrifted), blouse (Nygard, consignment), skirt (Selma K, thrifted), shoes (Hilary Radley, consignment), belt (Club Monaco), necklace/brooch (thrifted), earrings (Jacob), silver ring (Stone Roses), Fulvia Ring (Wendy Brandes).

Someone is going to like having us home for over a week:
"Stay home and play with me!"
He rolls around like this nearly every morning, and follows us around as we get ready. He and I always have a play before I leave.
"I'm going to run down the hallway any second!"
He's quite a character.
"But first, I'm going to lick my butt."
I just laugh when I look at that.

Hope your week is going well! Be merry!

Ugly Christmas Sweater Day!

Woo hoo! It's Friday, and I am now officially on holiday! Today was Ugly Sweater Day at work (my idea), so of course I had to go all out.
You didn't actually think I would wear a manufactured Christmas sweater, did you? I made my own!

As I mentioned when I thrifted this $16.95 sweater when I bought it last Friday (here), once I found out how much my sweater retails for ($199-318), I couldn't bear to glue-gun decorations to it. It's brand-new 100% Merino wool! Made in Norway!

It was perfect for today, which ended up being a crazy, snowy, sleety and cold kind of day.
"Are you going to wear that in public?"
I actually had to carry this in to work this morning, and then put it on, as it wouldn't fit under my coat with those massive pink glitter bows on the shoulders.
"Bored. What can I eat?"
Showing off my star fringe! This had a lot of movement with the bead icicles and the fringe. The snowflakes on the front moved as well. I also rattled (fringe again) and the silver poinsettias have bells in the centre which also made noise. You could hear me coming!

This bright pink is a limiting colour for mixing with other colours, so I decided to go BAM with this cerulean blue vintage skirt, last seen here with white leopard earlier this month.
I'm down to $3.25 per wear on the skirt in just two outfits!

My hot pink tights were the perfect match to take this skirt into Crazytown (population: me).
I de-blinged and de-uglified my sweater at the end of the day at work, as I wrapped up my desk for a week off. It's still a nice sweater, but a little casual for work. I'll probably wear it more on the weekends or around the house.

The stuff:
I love these neutral bow-tied beauties. I last wore them here (2nd outfit) in November the day of the Unlimited Woman Awards.

Big icy-blue bling:
I liked how the rings looked with the bright pink.

Sweater (Dale of Norway, thrifted), skirt (no label, vintage, thrifted), shoes (Jeffrey Campbell), earrings (Oscar & Libby's), Spaghetti Monster ring (vintage), silver ring (Stone Rose), Fulvia Ring (Wendy Brandes).

Here's how I made my Ugly Sweater:
Sweater, meet ugly crap from a couple of different dollar stores and the drugstore. I spent about $7.00 on any sparkly things I could find. There wasn't much available, so I had to try to think about what I could do on a sweater with each item as I found it.
Add: a couple of glasses of wine to get the creative juices flowing! I already knew I wanted to make star fringe from the garland, and put the pink bows on the shoulders, so it was just a matter of playing around with the other pieces to see how they would work the best.
I sewed all the pieces on quite loosely. I was in Brownies - I can sew with a needle and thread! For the fringe, I just cut up the garland into even pieces (cut in half first to be sure of even amounts for each arm), and laid them out to see how it looked before sewing them on.
Cat attack!
I had a little help from Vizzini.

And the finished product! I was covered in glitter by the end of the day.
It's quite spectacular, isn't it? It prompted giggles, guffaws and squeals of delight from my coworkers. How will I cap this next year?

The arm fringe was particularly popular.
I had to keep reattaching the stars as they kept falling off during the day.

A picture of me and some of my coworkers in front of our tree next to my desk at work.
What a fun day!

Quiet Weekend Wrap-Up - Minorly Social

All is quiet in the blogosphere - and that's as it should be! Spend time with real people, do real things and relax. I have been doing quite a bit of relaxing myself this past weekend - it's been a less hectic holiday season for L and I than in previous years, giving us a chance to wind down.
On Saturday, we met up with a bunch of friends for our weekly visit to our favourite diner. I always dress up for brunch, although in a more casual way than I do for work.

This is my most wonderful lilac leather skirt, first seen here earlier this month with a riot of 80s colours.
My indigo chunk sweater went beautifully with the purple of the skirt, toning nicely without being as harsh as black. I last wore it here in November with another thrifted skirt. I'm wearing a long-sleeved t-shirt under it for extra warmth.
Aren't the tights cool? I love a crazy whack of pattern. The boots were last worn with my bigass teal dress here a couple of weeks ago.

I had fun with my outerwear:
Orange angora gumdrop hat and oh, don't my purple leather gloves match perfectly?

I last wore the magnificent coat here (mid-way down) in November on the day of the Unlimited Woman awards. It's a little too chilly to wear it in winter, but the extra sweater/tee layers helped. Plus, I only walked a couple of blocks total, so it was mostly for show.
I am all about the show. Peace out, yo!

Coat (Desigual), sweater (Dex, thrifted), skirt (vintage 80s, Chia, thrifted), tights (Look of London), boots (Aerosoles, thrifted), gloves/hat (Danier Leather), earrings (Le Chateau).

When we got home, I banished L to the den while I wrapped his presents. We just do stockings for each other, but since it's kind of weird not to have any presents from each other when you're at someone else's home, we are each saving out two from the stockings to go under the tree this year.
"Nom, nice decorations on this stocking for me to eat!"
Vizzini helped, of course. He batted at the tape and took off with L's stocking. We also play-fight with the cardboard tube.

On Saturday night, our friends Nick and Karen invited us over for an impromptu gathering. Not dressy, but not ultra-casual either. What to wear? What to wear?
Jammy dress! This is a vintage Ports International item, which I thrifted back in October 2011 for $10.50, here, for my birthday party. That's the one and only time I've worn this dress - it's a tricky one, being fairly dressy (and long) but being a casual material (polyester).

It's gorgeous to wear.
It matches my hair perfectly.
Amazing draping and weight. And my cost-per-wear is at $5.25.

I accessorized it with all copper, including rust-coloured tights.
And my floral Docs! Since I knew we'd be taking our shoes off, I didn't bother with a fancy shoe. We walked there and back, so I went for fun and comfort. I last wore my Docs here twice last weekend.

The Unsafe Polar Bear coat came out for the walk, as did a new-to-me hat that Elaine gifted to me a few weeks ago. I missed taking pictures of my little Christmas tree pins - I have one on the coat and one on the hat - and will take some pictures of the fabulous chapeau and its label next time I wear it (it won't be long, promise!).
My faux fur scarf and trimmed gloves - I am ready for you, Winter!

The stuff:
Copper is my favourite metal.

Dress (Ports International, vintage 70s, thrifted), leather belt (thrifted), boots (Doc Martens, consignment), earrings and necklace (Renoir, vintage 60s), cuff (vintage 70s).

We took a route that had a fabulously-lit tree that L wanted to show me.
Dark and gloomy, punctuated by yellow street lights and splashes of Christmas lights.

The tree itself is very gnarly, and the owners have put in spotlights pointed up at it to highlight all the twisted branches.
So cool!

This was so amazing.
It filled me with wonder.

Last post for a while...we'll chat again later this week. I have a gnome in my future...

Bigass Wrap Up: Travel, Christmas, Kitties and Shopping

Hey! I'm back! It's been a bit of a break, but no fear, back to our regularly scheduled programming (and back to work tomorrow for me - boo!).

Warning: this is a bigass post. A lot of pictures!

First up: a very Happy Holidays to all of you from my fam.
Me, L and Vizzini (who is batting at my earring and not posing properly).

On Monday night (way back, last week), L and I went out for dinner. I tend to let the fridge get empty before we travel, so we wandered down to the pub for some grub.
I'm so lazy that I'm wearing my around-the-house-only Smoking Lily long-sleeved t-shirt under this.

The black suede shirt was last seen here (2nd outfit, after Vizzini) in November.
The pinstriped skirt was last seen here (last outfit, with green sweater) in October.

Wore my red Fluevog boots for a bit of colour. They were last seen here (2nd outfit) a couple of weekends ago for a stroll to get groceries.
"Hey, what's with all the packs? Are you going somewhere?"
I wore them without the harness pieces, and added the red coral earrings and red leather belt.

The usual accompaniments:
Toque, fluffy scarf, gloves and red leather coat.

Jacket (Danier Leather), suede shirt (True Character, thrifted), skirt (Planet, thrifted), tee (Smoking Lily), boots (Adrian Agnes, Fluevog), earrings (local), belt (Plum).

Vizzini gets friendly with my scarf.
He's quite happy to be picked up...on his terms.

This year, we spent Christmas in Powell River. This calls for travel clothes: simple, warm and layers.
Crazy pink snowflake sweater, last seen here a little over a week ago, embellished with horrid Christmas decorations.

Add one giant black suede skirt (with pockets):
Last wore it here (second outfit) a couple of weeks ago.

My floral Doc Martens are perfect for travel. They are getting more comfortable with each wear.
I last wore them here (2nd outfit) last weekend, to walk to Nick and Karen's place.

Someone was definitely suspicious that Something Was Up.
"Wait a minute, these are travel bags!"
Travel coat (good for sleeping under), fluffy scarf and bright purple gloves.
I wore my Christmas tree pin - this was a gift from my former boss, Evelyn, at the Christmas store where I worked for 11 years.
I like the simple shape.

Sweater (Dale of Norway, thrifted), skirt (Danier Leather, thrifted), boots (Doc Martens, consignment).

Upon further thought, Vizzini was unconcerned about us leaving.
"Eh, Uncle Nick will feed me."
We rented an SUV for the drive up - our little car isn't good in winter weather, so better to be safe. The Malahat Drive can be nasty if it's raining or snowing.
Fortunately, it was neither - blue skies!

Gorgeous skies, in fact.
Looking across Salmon Arm to Sidney and Brentwood Bay.
That's all Pacific Ocean. We are pretty high up the side of the island.

I like seeing all the farms on the way up-island.
That's a dairy farm - our milk is local!

L and I always make fun of this road, just north of Nanaimo: Jingle Pot Road.
We always sing, "Jingle Pot, Jingle Pot, Jingle Pot...Road" to the tune of "Jingle Bell Rock."

Big fluffy clouds for the last long stretch of highway.
Yes, there are elk on those warning signs. It would be a bad thing (for the car and the elk) if we hit one.

Uh-oh! We have a new - and much smaller! - ferry on the Powell River route.
Because we were concerned about missing the ferry on Christmas Eve (another thing that wouldn't be optimal), we got to the terminal really early.

Enough time for a beach walk for me! Yay!
This is a typical West Coast beach: logs/driftwood, grasses, some coarse sand, and lots of shells, kelp and other washed up detritus.

Another million years and this sand will be nice and soft.
Pretty shell. I'm a bit of a shell and rock junkie.

A big clamshell.
The biggest one I saw was about the size of my hand.
I only saw one other person out for a walk.

Pink kelp/seaweed and an empty crab shell.
I'm amazed at the variety of kelp and seaweed.
A big piece of bull kelp. We called these "whips" when I was a kid and my brother and I used to try to hit each other with them. Ah, siblings.

Look at the gorgeous purple inside this shell.
And at least 3 different kinds of seaweed there.

A long tide-line twisted rope of kelp.
I love the shushing sounds as you walk on the pebbles.
A big next of seaweed and kelp.

I liked how all these houses (all the same) looked against the chaotic nature of the beach.
Most of the logs have drifted away from log-booms from the coast.

Ooh, look at that piece of quartz!
So white! I had to keep it.

I had to keep this piece of green quartz mix as well.
It's a heart!

This critter gave me a start - I find the sections of the back carapace on the beach all the time, but have never found one intact.
And that's because he was still alive! The underside was his big pink fleshy foot (for gripping on rocks). I threw him back into the water - it's better than being chomped by a seagull!

Some more seaweed.
So neat.

Speaking of seagulls, they are always lurking.
You can see the far mainland in the background, behind the ferry pilings. That smoke coming off the water is actually from the pulp and paper mill in Powell River.

I always look back to where I've been.
Remnants of the past.

Boots on a log!
I'm very good at walking on logs. Many years of experience. I should put that on my resume, heh.

It was definitely a smaller ferry! The car section isn't even enclosed!
Zoiks, you want us to go up on that ramp to the left?

Objects in mirror are closer than they appear...
Yup, that would be me I captured in the side mirror.

This ferry only holds about 40 cars.
It's quite a down-size from the old ferry.

On the plus side, it's a much newer ferry (the old ones were from the 60s).
Pulling out from the docks - I went outside and checked it all out very thoroughly.

This sun-deck area is going to be sweet in the summer.
At this time of year, everyone was crammed inside. At least there were lots of seats.
Ahoy! Anyone driving this thing?

We arrived in PR just as it got dark, and shortly after, we finally got to L's mom's place.
Her tree looked lovely - and look at all those presents!

L and I had a nice quiet Christmas Eve with Louise. L and I did stockings in bed together in the morning. I got spoiled as usual.
I also spoil him! I got:

  • Lots of books: the new Neil Gaiman, the new Walking Dead, "Hyperbole and a Half" (finished already), a couple of Iain Banks (I'm nearly done "The Wasp Factory"), the new Dan Simmons, the most recent Kim Harrison, and a Stephen Kind Hard Case novel.
  • Bust Magazine.
  • Ting Tings CD.
  • Two pairs of stockings.
  • Fox socks and a pair of workout socks.
  • Two kinds of loose tea.
  • Baileys (for my coffee, consumed), espresso vodka (consumed), and an Irn Bru (consumed).
  • Lots of locally-made and fair trade chocolate (all consumed); violette candies (consumed).
  • A necklace (picture below).

My Christmas Day outfit:
Red/white striped asymmetrical blouse (last seen here in August), same skirt, black and white snowflake tights, and my red leather obi.
I'm in front of the painting I did for my in-laws of their old property in 2008 (picture here).

This is the necklace L gave me - the other side is a picture of a Victorian room, but I like the Titanic and roses on this side.
Locally-made, thank you!

The nice thing about the SUV (besides the heated seats!) was that L could bring up his guitar to play.
He's been taking lessons for a year, and is getting really good!

I liked this tie-clip and cufflink set (in its original box) that L got from his mom.
Yep, may have to "borrow" that.

More stuff from L and his mom and brother under the tree.
The puzzle is from Louise, as is the red envelope (full of gift money, yay!), and the cat toy; the DVD is from L's brother. A lovely bottle of Ardbeg (single malt whisky) and the "X'ed Out" graphic novel by Charles Burns, plus this cool frog tin are from L.
And inside the tin: a new orange power-line belt buckle! Cool! L always gets me good stuff.

We were up at 6am on Boxing Day for the return ferry home.

Driving on the loading dock.
Man, that is a small ferry.
I like this shot of the inside.

We were on the side with a view of the Powell River terminal. Bye!
I'm used to the old ferry being covered in rust - it's nice to see new parts! However, this little ferry is going to be really tippy in high winds. I bet there will be sailing cancellations in our future at some point.

We had drizzly weather and rain on the drive down-island.
Nanaimo in the distance.

I was ready for the gnome!
That large hand is really...large.

Extra bonus shot!
That is a really large gnome. It's an oxymoron!

Nearly home!
At the top of the Malahat.

As soon as we got home we showered, had a nap and then got ready to head over to my Mom's place to do dinner with my brother and his extended family.
Woo, sunny!

My studded sweatshirt (last seen here in November, 2nd outfit).
Leather skirt (last seen here on my birthday week in October), patterned tights, and leather cuffs. The boots were last worn a week ago (here).
"You're home! Hang out with me!"
Vizzini was very happy to see us, but as it was a really short trip, he was much more nonchalant this time.

Sweatshirt (Silence + Noise, consignment), skirt (Hemingway, consignment, vintage 80s), boots (Aerosoles, consignment).

I took a few pictures of Mom's kitty Harlequin.
She is 17 years old and is still hanging in there. Likes to be near the fireplace, of course.
"Can I nap in peace?"
We had a nice dinner - it's always good to see my nieces and my brother, and of course, his ex-wife and his current girlfriend. Families are so...interesting.

On Friday, L and I went out for brunch, then ventured to the mall (for him) and to a few stores to spend some of our gifted Christmas money.
An easy outfit. My plaid dress was last seen here for a plaid attack in early October.
I'm wearing my black cashmere sweater under it, with plain black tights. I last wore the sweater while out shopping with the Hostess here (with my plum skirt, here).
Simple black boots for lots of walking.

My Vassali coat and creamy-white accents.
A good winter-y outfit!

I also wore this charm that Mom gave me for Christmas.
It's a deconstructed watch with a US stamp stuck over the face, then the cogs and gears from inside the watch stuck on the front. Very cool.

Dress (Plum), sweater (Expression, consignment), belt (Leather World), buckle (local), boots (Aldo, consignment), necklace (gift from Mom).

Mom also gave me this awesome pendant.
It's a distressed metal piece, with a painting/stamp of a bug on one side...
And trees on the other. Mom always finds me good stuff.

I did treat myself to a couple of pairs of shoes with my Christmas money. They're both by the same brand - Gold Button - and I found them on deep discount (but still pricey) at the Cobbler, one of the best shoe stores in town.
This pair is olive and purple suede. I love the purple scoop heel, the little purple it at the back of the heel, and the wee gold button on the side.
Another little purple suede flare at the instep. These are ultra-comfy!

I couldn't resist these booties.
It was late afternoon by the time I got home, so the light is not the best. The colours are brown, blue (the lacing area) and caramel (the heel).

I love the lacing.
Bow on the toe!

And the gold button on the inside.
Both pairs of shoes were designed and handmade in Spain of soft leather, and are comfortable!

On Saturday, we headed down to our favourite diner, then I went for a tour through some of my favourite thrift stores.
I loved how this outfit turned out. I've been considering getting rid of this skull cardigan (not great quality, and I'm iffy on the shape), but I liked it so much with this, it's earned a reprieve. For now!

I'm linking up this outfit to Patti's "Visible Monday" over at Not Dead Yet Style - get yourself there!

I haven't worn this cardi since the September 2012 capsule (recap here), where I wore it once (here).
The grey skirt is a basic one from Plum. No distinguishing characteristics, which makes me think I should replace it with a nicer (wool?) one. I really want every item in my wardrobe to be fabulous, not just "meh". This skirt: not fabulous.
The tights are pretty awesome, aren't they? I loved how the spotty pattern went with the skulls. I actually had a customer in a thrift shop bring me a polka-dotted shirt because she saw my tights. Aw, what a nice thing to do. I didn't like the shirt, though.

The shoes are my awesome Fluevogs - very good for walking! I last wore them here in November with my snowflake skirt.

Sweater (Kersh), skirt/belt (Plum), tights (Hue), shoes (Presence Impel, Fluevog).

I actually bought these Look from London tights on Friday, but forgot they were in my purse. I like the wine-colour.
And L got the notification from the post office that my last Christmas present had arrived, so he picked it up for me on Saturday. It's the awesome mug from Anne of Spygirl, featuring all the amazing fashion bloggers that you are/know and love!

I'm right in the middle there (this is my original digital drawing here, based on this outfit here).
Do you have yourself on a mug? You need one! Go here! Or maybe you need the art print of the Digital Catwalk participants?

I'm to the right of Ally, who is just above Lynn and under Judith. I love seeing some of my very favourite bloggers here. This is going to be my new work mug, and will be proudly shown off at my desk to everyone! Best present ever!

I did have some good luck while out shopping - last shopping of 2014! I've been mulling over another year-long challenge (like no shopping at all, ulp!), but I've decided to just be status quo and carry on. Life is crazy enough.

I found this marvelous metal belt at the Women in Need (WIN) boutique. I always have good luck there.
It's really heavy, and I love the woven texture.
Pretty sure it cost more than $6.50 originally. No marks on it, but it reeks of good quality.

Yes, it's another leather skirt. Another black leather skirt, at that.
But it has white stitching! That's different, right?

It's by Danier Leather.
And only $29.50 - such a bargain for leather!

I snatched this chartreuse green faux fur stole off a display.
I love the brown satin lining.
Also Danier, but what a great price. $10.50 is great - I'm sure this would have been over $40 new.

I bought this blazer for the fit and the quality.
It's olive green and will replace my junkier cotton blazer that's packed away with the summer stuff. I love the rounded full collar and the hidden buttons. It also has this crazy leopard/camo lining.

It was on the half-price rack (possibly because the other piece of the 2-piece was missing) for $15.25.
I've never heard of Ron Leal, but it's nearly 100% wool and was made in Vancouver. After a bit of digging around on the interwebs, I found out that Ron Leal was the former head designer for Jax clothing (a Canadian brand that was very big in the 80s), and that he studied in Milan. I also found this listing on eBay of this exact same jacket with the original price tags on it. The original price was $960.00. Wow.

I love how a little research can reveal a wealth of history on a designer - and it's so gratifying to really find a good score! This jacket is a beautiful fit and a real deal!

I also stopped in at a little consignment store for a poke around, and found this gorgeous angora sweater. The brand is Limited.
It's dark chocolate brown and was $35.00. It has no pilling (a big turn-off for me), so it looks like it's been hardly ever worn. I love angora, but have had issues with it shedding and getting little wisps in my eyes. Hopefully, this sweater will work out, because it looks amazing on!

Last item: this wonderful cotton Spring-weight coat:
I'm all about the quality and the fit - I don't really care about the label, but I want the cut to fit me really well, and the fabric to be natural (wool, cotton, cashmere, leather, silk, etc.).

I couldn't find anything on the brand (there is a Lily Bleu brand that makes children's clothing - this is not that brand), but it's handmade in Canada and it's 100% cotton.
And only $14.00. Crazy. I love the pinwheel plaid pattern of it. I'm excited to wear this when spring gets here! For now, it's off to the closet for it.

I am always on the lookout for slips and half-slips for layering, and was lucky to find another cream one, and a black one. They are both by Linda, and are made in Canada. These were $2.00 and $5.00.
Vizzini made his presence felt! Roly-poly kitty!

Well, back to the grind tomorrow, but I'm looking forward to a rockin' New Year's Eve! We will be going out for dinner (a group of 13 of us), then going to Cat/Ross' place to party on afterwards.

Hope your holiday was merry, bright and stress-free!

Purple and Olive and Lacy Legs

One more day of the year to go! How exciting! I wonder what 2014 will bring?
Colours are not quite true here - still dark out!
I do like to wear my new and new-to-me stuff as soon as I get it. Let's get that jacket into an outfit, stat!

This is the first outfit with my thrifted olive jacket (purchased here on the weekend). I really liked how it fit, and the great cut. I found two little buttons under the points of the collar, so I think this once had a detachable faux-fur collar. That would have been awesome.
"I don't want you to go! Stay home with me!"
Trust me, bub, I didn't want to get up at 6am either.

I layered the jacket over my purple lace dress, which was last seen way back in July here, with leopard legs.
The tights are pretty cool, aren't they? I do love a fun tight.

The stuff:
New shoes! Also purchased in the last week.

My Myka set:
So gorgeous. It's always worth it to have high-quality costume jewelry, in my opinion.

Jacket (Ron Leal, thrifted), dress (Jacob, thrifted), shoes (Gold Button), jewelry (Myka).

Peace Out, 2013!

Last day of the year, yo! And yes, I was at work - a full 8-hour day. It was super dead, so I took down the Christmas decorations and attended to some much-needed annual maintenance of my desk (a good cleaning, plus some filing) in preparation for some long days working on the newsletter this and next week.
Grrr...crappy morning light...
But let's not get ahead of ourselves! It's New Year's Eve, and as soon as I am done talking about this outfit, I am having a nap in preparation for dinner out (at 8:30pm! Heavens!) with 11 of our closest friends, followed by a party at our friends' place till the wee hours. You know, my usual.

So, outfit. This is my new-to-me brown angora sweater and my new booties, both purchased on the weekend (here, down at the bottom).
Because the booties have blue and brown leather in them, I used that as my colour palette: blue blouse under the sweater (for extra warmth and protection from the dastardly pokey Christmas tree), and a blue belt (to hang my keys from).

The blouse is sheer, and was last worn here (hey, that rhymed) in November under a strapless dress.
My much-loved steampunk skirt was last seen here (way down at the bottom) in October for dinner out with L and Mom.

The stuff:
I ended up taking the booties off around 1:30pm and putting my runners on. I had spent most of the morning on my feet wrangling large boxes, decorations and such, and my feet were sore. The heels are 3", which is now my top limit for a work shoe.

I will be wearing heels (not sure which ones yet) tonight, and we'll be walking to the restaurant, to our friends' place, and home in the same shoes, so I need to baby my feet. Also: note to self, Sheila, wear comfy shoes tonight!

 Bling:
I love this thrifted necklace. Such a cool design.

My clock hands are set at 5:00 and 9:00pm: when I got home from work and when I'll be finally eating dinner!

Blouse (Expression, consignment), sweater (Limited, consignment), skirt (Orwell, thrifted), booties (Gold Button), necklace (thrifted), earrings (Foxy).

And now...time to nap.

Wishing my friends - near and far - all the best for the coming year. May 2014 bring you happiness, joy and good clothes!

Happy New Year! Here's to 2014!

And with a pop of the champagne cork, just like that, one year is over and another has begun!
From my fam (including photobomber Vizzini) to yours: Happy New Year!
L put together his outfit - with a minor polish/bit of feedback from me. He is getting very good at his own styling! His wonderful orange satin pants are Versace (purchased second-hand in Vancouver for $75.00), the shirt is a vintage 70s ripple-pattern that I thrifted for around $10, the jacket is a vintage linen one (thrifted by me for $9.99), and his shoes are Fluevogs. The shirt has waves of baby blue in it, matching the shoes.

L and I continued our tradition of partying the year out with our good friends. We often go out for a posh dinner, then back to a residence to continue the party. Last night, the restaurant we went to took over 3.5 hours to serve us our 5-course meal (seriously, we finished our meal after midnight!), so we missed seeing in the New Year at Cat and Ross'. However, we did get to take most of the restaurants' helium balloons home!

What I wore:
My lovely shimmery red/black taffeta dress, purchased on consignment here in early December for $38.98.
Vizzini has decided that the hallway is the trendy place to be in 2014
I added my black stomacher with a caramel belt over it, and I have a black lacy slip under the skirt of the dress (it has a liner and a puffy crinoline, but I wanted a little extra warmth). I liked my "holey" tights.

I also wore sparkly false eyelashes:
And my black feather fascinator. Isn't that shoulder bow awesome?

And who loves to come out for a fun time? The Unsafe Polar Bear!
I had a blast dashing across traffic-less streets, and encouraging others to do so. Traffic lights and walk signs are guidelines, people! Hee hee, don't worry, Mom, I didn't do anything stupid.

We partied till the wee hours - my head didn't hit the pillow until 4am.

The stuff:
My lovely Qtee Minis, last seen here in December with my wonderful red suit. I walked to town, and to Cat/Ross', then L and I walked Elaine home, then finally back to our place early this morning.

The bigass bling:
I love that cuff.

Dress (Bellissima, consignment), stomacher (InWear), belt (Club Monaco), fascinator (Heart's Content), shoes (Qtee Mini, Fluevog), earrings (Plum), spinner ring (Twang & Pearl), cuff (Midzo, thrifted).

As I wrap up my 6th year of blogging (seriously, I started in 2008! That's insane!), this isn't the first New Year's Eve outfit I've posted. Here's a little retrospective of my blog NYE get-ups of the previous five years (some of the posts linked also have pics of L's outfits, and aw, some pics of my old kitty Inigo).

New Year's Eve 2008:
My Betsey Johnson dress, purchased new at half price for $400 (at the time, I didn't disclose the price because I didn't want L to know how much it was). I still have the dress, but I'm about 5 lbs away from comfortably wearing it. I last wore it here in 2010 for my Day With Auntie Sheila for my niece Zoe's 11th birthday, with a t-shirt under it and rocker accessories. I need to wear it again - that's a good goal!

I'm in my wacky hair phase where I enhanced the natural curl. I thought the pink tights were really outrageous at the time. I still have those shoes too - I last wore them for my birthday in 2012, here. I still have those same pink tights, too! They've lasted well!

New Year's Eve 2009:
I bought this dress for $8.00 at the WIN thrift store - it's pretty awesome and deserve another wear! I last wore it in 2011 here for my birthday party.

I don't have those shoes anymore - I never liked how they looked on. That big ruffle down the front made my feet look chunky. I am glad my hair is shorter now too.

New Year's Eve 2010:
Such a cool dress! I gave it away in 2013, as I'd only worn it a couple of times - it was pretty limiting for changing up the look. I do still have those shoes, though! Some goofy hair going on there!

New Year's Eve 2011:
Love this dress! I also love the amped-up crimped hair and the crazy furry bag (I gave that away this year too). I still have the dress - it was last seen here in December 2012 with those same pink tights. I still have the shoes (which I wear all the time, last time here in November).

New Year's Eve 2012:
I still have all the elements of this outfit: the pewter leather skirt (here, Sept 2013), the floral blouse (here, December 2013) and the leather bustier (here, with the Traveling Yellow Skirt in November 2013) and my Marc boots (here, October 2013). Even the top hat and the floral necklace are still with me!

Anyway, I'm off to make the first dinner of 2014 (spaghetti), and then am going to settle back on the couch for some quality time with my sweeties (L and Vizzini). Back to work tomorrow!

Black Leather and Yellow Power Lines

Look at that - it's another year. Well, moving on...
Classic me: bright colours, leather and rock accessories. I resolve to wear more of all of these in 2014. I also resolve to participate in "Hat Attack!" over at Style Crone! (I'm cheating and calling my fascinator from NYE a hat).

This yellow sweater is such a nice cheery bright colour - perfect for the dreary rainy day we had. I last wore it here (3rd outfit) the weekend I bought it in early December.
It's a little hard to see, but this black leather skirt (purchased here on the weekend) has contrasting white stitching down the front and back.
I know, the tights are boring ol' plain black, but it felt like Monday this morning! Too...much...effort...

The stuff:
White stitching on the skirt, white stitching on the shoes. Could I get any more matchy? The answer is none: none more matchy.

I last wore these shoes here in November while violating my company's dress code. Heh. I'm a rebel that way.

Big black bling:
Critters and my new belt buckle.

A close-up:
Power lines! Transformers! Electricity! Zot! Bam! Pow!

Sweater (Spense, consignment), skirt (Danier Leather, thrifted), shoes (Bata, vintage, consignment), belt (Leather World), buckle/earrings (local), necklace (Raven's Roost Studio), rings/studded cuff (80s vintage), leather cuff (Guess, thrifted).

Casual Friday - Grey Brocade

Well, TGIF! Don't you just hate those mid-week stat holidays? Bring on the weekend!
Formal Friday! Boots, long skirt and a funky jacket (with a little velvet cami-top), that's the ticket.

I love this brocade jacket, but I almost never wear it. In fact, I haven't worn it since the February 2012 capsule (recap here). I wore it twice in that capsule: once with a purple skirt and once with a grey skirt. Before that, I'd only worn it just after I bought it (here, in November 2011).
What do you think? Keep? Or donate?
The skirt is one of my favourite denim pieces. I last wore it here (3rd outfit) in November, with my cream brocade jacket. This skirt just demands brocade.

The stuff:
My lovely Marc boots, and feather earrings. I last wore the boots here in October for my Monster Bash costume.

Jacket (Naughty), skirt (Optionelle, consignment), cami-top (Bianca Nygard, consignment), boots (Marc), earrings (local).

Happy weekend!

Quiet Weekend Wrap-Up

Ah, a nice quiet weekend. As we are in the NFL playoffs for the next few weeks, most of our weekend time is spent watching the games (my beloved Carolina Panthers are in the hunt!).

On Saturday, L and I went out for breakfast to our favourite diner.
It was cold, but sunny - hey, at least you can see my groovy tights' pattern!

This is my black shirtdress, last worn here (3rd outfit) for a pre-Christmas shopping day with Elaine in December.
My be-flowered Neosens get their second outing; it was last seen here with my space-y jacket and this same obi.
In addition to the tights, I have a camisole on and a half-slip (showing, because I don't care) for added warmth. I have on a pair of L's cufflinks as well, and a pair of gold starburst earrings.
"Hey, are you leaving again?" wonders my photobomber.
Since my dress has pockets, I can wear my pocket-less coat.

Dress (Talbot's, consignment), shoes (Neosens), obi (Smoking Lily), earrings (local), coat (Renuar, consignment), gloves (Parkhurst).

On Saturday night, we met up with our friends Chris and Alison for dinner, followed by a concert at the local arena. Since it's still hockey season, they just cover the ice with a flooring, so I was anticipating a cold venue.
Wrong! It was boiling. And although I'd worn layers, I ended up fanning myself with my ticket all night. We went to see Blue Rodeo, my favourite band (I've been a fan for 25 years!), for the 3rd time. The two singer/songwriters of the band, Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor were just named to the Order of Canada last week! (that's a big deal). Here's the local paper's review, and you can also read L's review of their new album and the concert over here at his blog.
Blue Rodeo is a pretty mellow alt-country-blues-rock band, so it wasn't a super hoppin' affair. However, a good time was had by all.

I wore my unofficial concert sweater, last seen here when we went to see Lindi Ortega in November. Coincidentally, Devon Cuddy, who opened for Lindi, also opened for Blue Rodeo.
I also wore my extra-long brown wool skirt (last seen here, 2nd outfit, for the November Winesday), my Docs (last seen here on our trip to PR), and my crackle leather coat, along with fingerless gloves and a silk Ralph Lauren scarf.

Sweater (Wilfred, thrifted), skirt (Animale, consignment), Doc Martens (consignment), coat (Danier Leather, thrifted), scarf (Ralph Lauren, consignment), gloves (Parkhurst), earrings (local).

And now, back to the games!

Chinese Tunic and Leather Pants

Oh yeah, I went there: red leather pants for work again. Heh, on a day when 8 new people started too! Hee hee!
This was the first day back at work after a few weeks for many of the people in my office, so it was fun to remind them of how whackadoo I can be.

My Tian Art tunic gets another wearing - I last wore it here in October belted and with a long skirt.
Love that hot pink satin lining! I have a cami and a thin sweater on underneath it for warmth - sending the rest of Canada and the US "hurry up and warm up!" vibes. It isn't anywhere near that cold here on the coast! Stay snuggly, my friends!
Somebody wants me to stay home - me too, bud!
The pants are my fabulous leather ones from the Gap, thrifted for $24.50 and first worn here in early December with ruffles and a whole lot of shine.

The stuff:
The trim on the jacket has a bit of blue in it, so I like popping that off the burgundy. This time, I used these blue-y-green-y shoes (also: flats for Monday were very much needed!), which were last seen here (2nd outfit) with navy and my Leia jacket.

Big bling:
I'd forgotten about those Shi Studio earrings - they were a gift from my friend Sherylyn a few years ago.

Tunic (Tian Art, thrifted), pants (Gap, thrifted), shoes (Nine West, thrifted), cuff (St. Paul's Cathedral gift shop), earrings (Shi Studio), red ring (Oscar & Libby's), Fulvia Ring (Wendy Brandes).

Ghostly Neutrals

Woo, Tuesday! I demand Friday - now!
It was so dark and gloomy this morning; raining and generally icky. Nothing compared to the rest of the country, but still: rough for taking outside pictures! Our exterior lights were off, and even with the backlight setting on my lil' point-and-shoot, I still came out ghosty.

This is my beautiful cream brocade jacket. See, if my grey jacket that I wore last week was as awesome as this one, I wouldn't have been waffling over it. I last wore this cream beauty here (scroll down, after the yellow shoes) in November.
I'm wearing my brown satin blouse under it, a favourite that I've had almost since I started this blog back in 2008. I last wore it in October here (way down, after the other yellow shoes).
The skirt is my machine wash-tumble dry Skott's Suede one - it's been washed so many times and it only gets softer! I last wore it on that same weekend as the brown satin blouse (here, again way down). How does that happen?

The stuff:
I totally forgot about this amazing belt - I haven't worn it since August (here).

The shoes are my "will I keep them or won't I?" Unlisted cheapos that I got at Winners so many years ago. I always think I'll get rid of them (they are not very well made - I had to do some gluing on them tonight), but then I wear them and they are so cool! And so comfy! Shoes, you may have just survived another round. I last wore them - wow, over a year ago in the November 2012 all-neutral capsule (recap here), where I wore them 4 times. They were on the fence after that month too.

Vintage bling:
My mink rose (aka "cat bait" - Vizzini wants to make sweet love to it...or lick it to death), my Grandma J's necklace, and vintage bracelet and earrings.

Jacket (Le Chateau, consignment), blouse (Esprit), skirt (Skotts Suede, thrifted), shoes (Unlisted), belt (Brave Belts, consignment), mink rose (consignment), necklace (Grandma J, Lisner, vintage 60s), bracelet (Trifari, vintage 60s), earrings (vintage 60s).

Urban Cowgirl and Lame in January

It's a twofer! How two months flies by; it is time for another newsletter. I worked late last night (until 10pm, and yes, that's a 13.5 hour day) getting it put together and if I hadn't had a haircut scheduled after work today, I probably would have worked at least another hour and half tonight. So, I'm tired, cranky and hungry.

But enough whining. Let's get to the clothes, shall we?
It's been dark, rainy and miserable the last two days, and the light has been sucky for taking pictures. I didn't have time in the morning to get my stair picture, so indoors is it.

This is my lovely caramel cotton velvet jacket, last seen here (3rd outfit, after my blonde outfit) the weekend of my birthday in October.

The striped skirt (the stripes are actually like a corduroy texture) is also cotton, and I last wore it here way, way back in May 2013 and raved about it then. Loved it in winter too! However, it is unlined, which necessitates a slip, so I went my red one (last seen peeking out here at the Unlimited Woman Awards in November).
Peplum action!
I went to bed as soon as I got home tonight, so no picture of my fabulous Fluevog boots. I last wore them out to lunch on a weekend in early December, here (2nd outfit).

The stuff:
I love this belt buckle so much.

Jacket (Gap, thrifted), skirt (Morena, consignment), slip (Suzette Lingerie, vintage, consignment), boots (Mini Babycakes, Fluevog), belt (Tony Lama, thrifted), buckle (Shi Studio), ring (Oscar & Libby's), earrings (local).

I was very thankful this morning that I plan all 5 outfits for the week on Sundays. Sweater, skirt, shoes. Easy-peasy.
The light on the stairs went out 5 seconds after I took this, plunging me into darkness. Spooky! With my spectral appearance yesterday, I think I must have a haunted stairwell. Or maybe the light is on a timer, since was 8am. Nah...definitely haunted, hee hee.
I actually really liked this outfit. The sweater was wonderfully warm and cozy, with the bare arms giving me good temperature control. I last wore this fuzzy angora top was last worn here for my New Year's Eve workday last week.
Who says you can't wear lame (and I mean lah-may) in January? I need to have a little chat with them, because this lovely shiny (shiny! caw!) skirt was so fun to wear. Lots of compliments and of course, it is at least a Swoosh Factor 7. I last wore it here with a copper and brown ensemble in mid-December.

The stuff:
My cute 80s Bruno Magli shoes. I love how these feel; although they are a strangely rigid shoe, they are supremely comfortable. I last wore them here in December as a grounding element for some crazy colours.

Bling: at
I totally forgot about this necklace and earrings set. I've had them for about 10 years, purchased at Plum on sale. They tangle with other jewelry easily, so I've had them stashed in a little box for obviously a while! They are gold-plated and real crystal-type stones.

Sweater (Limited, consignment), skirt (Club Monaco, consignment), shoes (Bruno Magli, vintage 80s, thrifted), cuff (vintage 60s, Mom's), necklace/earrings (Plum).

And now, I am off to eat chili and drink wine!

Weekend Wrap-Up: Ruffles and Bows, and Suede and Wine

$

It's the weekend! I'm so happy it's here - it was such a long week for me, and I am now chillin' and watching football and hanging out with L. Boo, I am disappointed that my Panthers are out of the playoffs, but will be cheering on local team Seattle next week!

I pretty much let my hairdresser do whatever she wants with my hair; I tell her what I like and we play with it, but this time it's really short in the back.
To counteract it: ruffles and bows! And yes, this is the second item of red leather I've worn this week. Adding my link to "Visible Monday" over at Patti'sNot Dead Yet Style- get yourself over there!

I have been looking at this jacket and thinking of getting rid of it, but I decided to give it another chance. I quite liked it with the narrowness of the pencil skirt. I last wore this jacket in the February 2013 capsule (recap here) where I wore it twice (last time here over a ruffled-necked dress). This makes it the third time I've worn it, and since I paid $30 on consignment for it, I'm down to $10 per wear.
I adore this red leather skirt. Red leather skirts for everyone! I last wore it here in November 2013 with dark florals.
I love all the back details on the jacket.

The Unsafe Polar Bear coat!
I am really getting my money's worth out of it - it's the best winter coat ever (so snuggly) and it's been good in the rain as well.

The stuff:
Pretty metallic bow shoes, last seen here in December with one really ugly Christmas sweater.

I liked the little touch of red in this pendant.
"Shop"
It's a lady in a vintage dress with a blue bird on her shoulder, and holding a red tulip.
I think I probably have spent time shopping more than that in my lifetime, but I've been good for the past couple of weeks. Next week...hee hee.

Jacket (Not the Same Jeans, consignment), top (Mossimo, consignment), skirt (Ocean West, vintage 80s, consignment), shoes (Jeffrey Campbell), necklace (local, gift from L), earrings (local).

Yesterday, L and I went out for brunch.
It was chilly and pouring rain, so I dressed warmly.

One of my black leather shirts, last seen here in late December 2013 with one of my maxi skirts.
That's my wine-coloured sweater dress under it, which I last wore here in October 2013 with mismatched greens, blues and teals.
L getting his shoes with Vizzini "helping"
The boots are my trusty black riding boots which I've had for about 3 years now. They are soft like buttah, but starting to get some wear on them. I last wore them over Christmas 2013 (here, last outfit with my red plaid dress).

For the rain, I wore the Octo-Coat:
It has a hood, plus it's soft and thick cotton with fleece inside.

Dress (Eric Alexandre), suede shirt (True Character, thrifted), boots (Aldo, consignment), belt (Club Monaco, thrifted), necklace (gift from Tina), coat (Smoking Lily).

And the rest of my weekend has been nothing but football, and a little Arkham Horror! It's been quiet, which I've really needed. Ah...
------------------------------------------------

By request this week, following my comment about putting together all my outfits for the week on Sunday, I'm going to address these questions from reader Ann:

Hi Sheila, can you talk a bit about how you plan your outfits? Do you have a dress form, or use hangers, or throw things on the bed? Do you right things down, or hang together? Could an unorganized person do this?

I'll be taking lots of pictures of my general process, as well as talking about how each specific outfit is planned. Check back tomorrow for the first post and a look at how my 5 outfits this week are selected.

Outfit Planning 101: The Sunday Night Big Picture; Day 1: Magenta and Dark Florals

Okay, you ready? I'm gonna give away a lot of secrets about how I plan my outfits in advance, so pay close attention!

On Sunday night, about an hour before bed, I mosey on into my closet (and yes, I do have a little walk-in closet, which I had custom-built about 7 years ago), and I start pulling outfits together.

So, you want to do this too? Here's what I need to think about:
  • What events do I have on at work this week? Will they require me to do a lot of standing? Will I need to be very active in my clothes? Affects: tightness/looseness of clothes, heel height.
  • What events do I have after work this week? Will I be spending up to 12 hours in my clothes? Longer? Do I need to transition from office to casual/dressy? Affects: additional items brought to work to change into/out of (think change of tights, jewelry, belt to jazz up an item, or removing a piece like a jacket to be dressier, or a change of heel height).
  • What's the weather going to do this week? Cold means lots of layers, rainy means my hems could get dirty or my shoes could get wet. Affects: fabrics worn (lighter/heavier), additional underthings for warmth, accessories as layers (scarves, for example).

Your requirements might be different, but think about what's going to impact you sartorially for the upcoming week. Planning and forethought is key!

Here's what this week looks like for me, from Sunday's perspective. The weather will be grey with a bit of rain, so I'll layer slips under skirts, and add camisoles as needed to stave off the chill.
  • Monday: always busy at work, on my feet. Meeting a photographer (hi, Matt!) after work to discuss styling for his photo-shoots. I want to look polished yet eclectic for work (another new person starting), but want to look artsy for the coffee meeting.
  • Tuesday: I deal with catering and will need to do some washing up as well as running dishes back to the restaurant. Weight Watcher meeting that night means I should wear something light (for weighing myself), but also fun for my members (they like to see what crazy stuff I wear).
  • Wednesday: catering at work, but that company is easier clean-up. No plans after work. Could do a funky outfit!
  • Thursday: catering at work, but another easy clean-up. Book Club after work, so I want to wear something fun that I can sit around and drink wine in.
  • Friday: busy work day, but no catering. I like to wear a piece of denim or leather on Fridays - it's almost the weekend, so be a bit more fun. No plans after work on Friday, so I could do a heel if I wanted.
I go into my closet and start looking around. Yes, I do have my clothes all grouped by type, and sorted by colour, and I can see nearly everything in my closet. I'm not getting into actual closet organization, but it really helps.

I start pulling out single items that I want to wear again, either because they are:
  • new/only worn once or twice;
  • something I haven't worn for a long time, and it's time to see if this puppy is going to stay in my closet; or
  • something I haven't worn for a long time, and I feel like wearing it again.
So here are the things I pulled together right off the bat.

Etro blazer and vintage red wool suit skirt
I have only worn this skirt once before. Due to the weather, I'm mostly doing jackets and cardigans these days for warmth, so I held the skirt up to my row of jackets and blazers (all sorted light to dark, naturally) to see what caught my eye. This blazer has been worn a couple of times, and I like that it has a little bit of red in the lapel pattern. Done!

Next item is this purple pouffy blouse.
Purpley blouse with vintage wool skirt - I've already started thinking about shoes
Because it's pouffy, I want to keep the bottom half of the outfit slim. I really liked how the orchid purple colour popped off the dark teal. Done! That's not going to be warm enough, but we'll work on that later.

Don't stress out if it doesn't really look like much right away. Just put the two or three items together and hang them up (I jam them in on one of the lower bars, shoving all my blouses and skirts to one side).

Next: I haven't worn this denim jacket in forever. Looks like I found my Friday denim piece.
A plain fitted jacket needs a bigass pouffy skirt. I'm mad for plaid, so let's do it! Hey, I've never worn the matching headband - why not?

I really like my sheer dark floral top:
Eeep, bad closet lighting
But it's way too cold to wear on its own. How about a cardigan? This magenta one goes well with the colours in the blouse. I don't really want to go too crazy on the bottom, so one of my black skirts will work. How about the vintage wool one? Done!

I want to wear the purple leather skirt again:
Ooh, it goes nice with this jacket, and here's a simple grey cowl-necked sweater to wear under it. Done!

Now, that wasn't so bad, was it? Do you see my little "rules" for myself in these outfits?

  • Defined waist;
  • If the top is fitted, do a fuller bottom;
  • If the top is pouffy, do a fitted bottom;
  • One to two colours or patterns;
  • At least one neutral.

I do consider all of those when grabbing stuff. I know what looks best on my figure (the hourglass shape), and I like to accentuate that. Your guidelines for yourself might be different.

Now your 5 outfits get hung up in the closet all side-by-side, ready for you to wear.

But, Sheila! How do you get 2 pieces to look like an actual outfit?

Jeez, patience! We're getting to that. We have to pick out shoes first.

First outfit: I have wine/red, a bit of cream on the cuffs and hint of yellow in the lapels.
I'm going to go with...matching the wine colour. My burgundy Miz Mooz boots will do nicely. Okay, done.

Next up: the pouffy shirt/skirt combo. I need a neutral, so black.
I also need some warmth, so how about this sleeveless jacket I've only worn once? First time with sleeves under it, should be fun! I already knew I wanted to wear my sort-of matchy green shoes with this outfit, so done.

Next: crazy plaid Friday outfit. Note that I haven't actually assigned any of the other outfits to days at this point. I'm just building outfits and I'll sort that out later.
The plaid has black, so black mid-calf boots will be good. Done!

Next: the magenta cardi/dark floral outfit:
A black shoes would be a snooze, so how about these nice cherry red Fluevogs? Like it - done!

And the last one: I don't really want to do purple shoes (too matchy), and black would be too harsh so...
An assist from Vizzini
Cat! I mean, grey wooly boots. Perfect!

Putting the above 5 outfits together took me about half an hour. That's it! And it makes it so much easier to then deal with one outfit at time, knowing I have the rest of the week taken care of. Sometimes I even go poking around in there on Saturday. I find it very relaxing. I pull stuff out, look at it, put it back, hold it up to the skirts or jackets. Paw through my dresses (too cold right now!), look at the shoes.

Don't stress about the details of each outfit! Think about the Big Picture. You've built 5 outfits. Give yourself a pat on the back. Well done, lil' camper!

But of course, you DO need to think about your Monday outfit now. I find this the most fun part (the funnest? More funnerer?). So let's do Monday together.

Accessories! As mentioned, I like a defined waist. Why? I carry a whack of keys around at work on a reel clip, so I need something to hang that on. I also have a small waist and I'd like to keep it that way. I find that a belt makes me both sit up straighter (posture!) and reminds me not to poach too many sausage rolls off the catering order (nom nom, sausage rolls...).

So my options are: a black belt (bo-ring!), a purple belt (yeah, okay, that could work) or a red belt. Since I'm doing a red-toned shoe, I'm going to go with a red belt.
Belt ready for duty, tights are clean and ready to pull on when I'm half-asleep
I already have coloured pattern in my outfit, but what about a black pattern for tights? Solid black is so blah. Yes, I like a pattern. Black floral, to tie it all together.

I'm wearing silver (on the belt), so let's keep in the silver family for our jewelry:
Pins go on the clothes before you put the clothes on!
This pin is so pretty, and I only paid $2.00 for it - and I've never worn it. Time to wear it! The neckline on this blouse is very bold and would visually fight with a necklace, so a pin where the two lapels join looks very appealing to me. Sort of a vintage-y look going here.

In keeping with the floral and scrolly shape of the brooch, let's do scrolly shaped jewelry:
Jewelry decided on, and lined up on a shelf in the closet. One step that I didn't show here is that I also laid out my underwear and a camisole to wear under the blouse. I don't need a slip with this skirt.

This outfit was hung out facing (like in the top pictures) in my closet, with both pairs of shoes on the floor, with all the accessories grouped together. There is no scrambling around for pieces or trying to find the missing shoe - it's all ready to go. I do not try stuff on the night before - I know how my clothes fit and 99% of the time, the outfit works out fine.

In the morning, put it all on and go! Sometime when I'm in the shower, I can't remember what I'm actually wearing for the day - it's a surprise! I never, ever change what I planned to wear, unless there is a mark or stain, or something else catastrophic.

So...how did it actually work today?
Well, aside from it being really dark this morning, and my stairs picture being really blurry, I liked this outfit a lot. I got several compliments on it. The one thing that irritated me was that I hadn't counted on the weight of the brooch pulling down the neckline of the blouse - I fussed with that a bit during the day, but it wasn't too bad.

The cardigan was last seen here at the Unlimited Woman Awards in November, on my dear friend Cat, but it was last worn by me here with black satin tux pants.
The blouse is a no-name thrifted item, last worn here with last Friday's red leather skirt. I do like the dark florals - very "soft Goth".
The skirt is one of my personal treasures: thrifted vintage Gianfranco Ferre. Wool, perfectly cut and made (in Italy). Love. I last wore it here with...the same blouse! back in September when I first bought it.

The stuff:
My lovely cherry-red Fluevogs were last seen here in September with hot pink and my Chinese tunic jacket.

The bling:
The amethyst ring and earrings were Christmas gifts in the 80s from my dad, and the Mexican ring is obsidian - also from Mom and Dad in the 80s.

Cardigan (Jacob, thrifted), blouse (no label, thrifted), skirt (vintage 80s, Gianfranco Ferre, thrifted), shoes (Sencha Teapot, Fluevog), belt (Plum), pin (thrifted), cuff (St. Paul's Cathedral gift shop), earrings/ring (homegrown vintage 80s, Mom and Dad).

Also taking a moment to wish my brother Dave a very Happy Birthday!

And now, I'm off to my closet to put together tomorrow's outfit. Whatever will it be??

I hope you enjoyed seeing how I plan ahead. I'll get into the details of how each outfit comes together so you can see how I'm accessorizing and taking it from Big Picture to (hopefully) fab fashion. Questions?

And here we are at Day 2:
Mica mentioned that she has to try on all of her outfits and that it slows her down. I know how nearly everything in my closet fits - I don't keep clothes that don't fit! Although I do admit that I have a few vintage pieces that I can't part with that are too big on me, but they don't stay in my main closet.

I wasn't as happy with today's outfit, and I think it's the sleeveless jacket/vest/jerkin/whatever you want to call it. I wasn't 100% sold on this as a trendy item, so I'm glad I thrifted it to test-drive it. I won't be keeping this item in my closet.
I last wore it here in October 2013 with a sleeveless top (and the same jewelry!), and although I didn't mind it sleeveless, it's just not versatile enough to stay in my wardrobe. You want to stay in my closet? You have to work!

The blouse is my fun pouffy one that I wore with my backless denim dress to work here in December 2013. It gets a thumbs up! Love the colour, love the neckline and the sleeves aren't too long that they get in my way. I am a woman of action!
This is a day of twos! This is also my second wear of my gorgeous vintage teal wool skirt last seen here in December 2013 with ruffles and wine.

The stuff:
These shoes always garner a lot of attention; they especially popped with the lacy tights today. I last wore them here (3rd outfit) in October 2013 with this same skirt. What can I say? They go!

My gorgeous dragon necklace and bracelet.
The purple ring was my dad's.

Jacket thing (Sandra Angelozzi, thrifted), blouse (Cleo, consignment), skirt (Selma K, vintage 80s, thrifted), shoes (Fly London), necklace (vintage 30s, gift from L), spinner ring (Twang & Pearl), gold/stone ring (Frances Jewellers, vintage 60s, Dad's), earrings (vintage, bought in the 90s).

Last night before bed, I put together all the items to wear with my four pieces that I'd already pulled together: the jacket thing, the blouse, the skirt and the shoes.

Thought process: I'm wearing a black jacket thing, so my black obi for the waist detail (also easy to take off so I can weigh myself tonight at WW).
Black tights are the way to go here; not colour. Not solid black, so how about lacy ones? Yeah, that works. Done.

Jewelry: since I had a nice teal in the outfit, I thought of my dragon necklace and bracelet.
This solidified my choice of tights: fussy detailed jewelry = fussy detailed tights. Note that I actually forgot to pick out earrings, so I went with a non-matchy purple/white paste stone vintage pair that goes with Dad's ring. A quick morning selection.

And there you go! Another day done. What will tomorrow's outfit be?
