Oh So Normal - Black and Magenta, and the Post-Monster

Gotta rush tonight - L and I are off with some friends to see another concert. I'll tell you all about it on the weekend (I'm out after work tomorrow night as well, so Saturday will be my update).

Here we go:
I know my style is a little "out there" for most people - this is probably the most normal of an outfit you would see out of me. Something regular people would wear. I don't consider myself normal or regular (well, except in a bodily functional way, but this isn't that kind of blog, ha ha!).

I wore this magenta cardigan undone all day, as in the pictures below, but it looked bad when I did the Stair Pose, so I buttoned it up for that. I last wore it here in September with turquoise.
The scale-print top is my Rachel Roy one that I thrifted here in October on my weekend with my niece Zoe for $14.99. Score! It was great to wear today. The chain at the neckline meant I didn't need to wear a necklace.
Aren't these tux trousers divine? I last wore them here in July (yeah, I don't wear pants much) with my now-gone pink satin jacket. I paid $7.50 for them at the Hospice Thrift Store in September 2012 - they are handmade! I've rolled the cuffs here for that modern cropped pant look.

I busted out my Obakki coat this morning as it was pretty chilly.
I last wore this coat here in January 2013. I paid $29.50 for it at the WIN Warehouse store back here in October 2012. When I first wore it, one of my high-end fashion-loving coworkers saw it and gasped - she said it would have been over $1,000 new. Their current collection only has tops, skirts and dresses - the lowest priced item is $255.00...for a t-shirt! Their clothes are all hand-made and 100% of their profit goes directly to their charitable initiatives (link: because that is worth some love!).

The stuff:
Classic black pumps, last seen here in June when I was being all Mr. T.

The stuff:
I love that Midzo cuff.

Cardigan (Jacob, consignment), top (Rachel Roy, thrifted), trousers (handmade, thrifted), shoes (Guess), cuff (Midzo, thrifted), spinner ring (Twang & Pearl), ring (Dad's, early 60s, Francis Jewellers).

Vizzini was perched high atop his post this morning:
"Oh, are you leaving?"
That's his personal Fluevog bag for some Rar-Monster rough-housing.
"Just go, then."
He was initially aloof, but then he wanted to play.
"I'm rolling around, I'm so cute, play with me!"
Sorry, buddy, gotta go to work.
"I claw the curtains!"
What a bad boy.

Massive Weekend Round-up: Lindi at Lucky, Dinner with Tammy, Shopping, and an Unexpected Award

Whoa, it's all a blur...so much has happened in the past 3-4 days! I hope everyone's having a great weekend!

Thank you to Melanie for the hilarious intro to my addition to the fun that is the Traveling Yellow Skirt Freak Show! Missed my entry? Here it is.

I'm also linking up to "Visible Monday" over at Patti's Not Dead Yet Style! Go visit!

But let's all jump in the Wayback Machine and see what's been going on in my crazy life. On Thursday night, L and I and a bunch of our friends went to see Canadian indie-country artist Lindi Ortega!*
*all links for Lindi because I'm a fan and I love!
L and I walked to town for pizza before the show. It's getting a little chilly these nights now, so I did the chunky sweater for warmth. I last wore it here in October in an unsuccessful outfit. I was much happier with this one!

I liked the contrast of the thick sweater and boots with the floatiness of this silk skirt. I last wore the skirt here (2nd outfit) in August with a matchy top half.
I had to wear red boots (you'll see in a bit) and these beauties are one of my favourite pairs of boots, period. They were last seen just a week ago, with my black leather dress, here. I wore my red coral/silver earrings, my red leather cuff and my red coral/silver ring.
The outerwear was red fingerless gloves, a junky orange scarf that's now in the giveaway bin, and my black leather old-job-swag jacket. Warm but not too bulky for standing around in a club.

Sweater (Wilfred, thrifted), skirt (Corey Lynn Calter, consignment), boots (Adrian Agnes, Fluevog), cuff (Rimanchik), earrings/ring (Oscar & Libby's).

The show was at Lucky Bar.
I'd never actually been there when it was a bar, but I remember it being a restaurant in the 90s and a vintage store called Bazaar in the 80s.

Lucky is a long, narrow venue. There were about 60 people there total, so we were standing only about 15 feet from the stage, with no jostling (this is important to me).

The opening act was Devin Cuddy*, son of Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo* (my favourite band).
*linking 'cause I love
I really liked his style; he has a sound much older than his years.

Lindi Ortega was awesome!
L and I recently discovered her; she is much like Neko Case in sound. We have her most recent 3 CDs and like them all, especially "Cigarettes and Truckstops." You can stream tracks from her website here, from both that and "Little Red Boots" (also a favourite).
It was just her and a drummer and guitarist.

She played on the piano for a couple of songs.
 She's wearing a fascinator!

Afterwards, she mingled with the fans and signed autographs!
Sa-weet!

And you may have noticed that as well as having an album called "Little Red Boots", she wears her little red boots on all her album covers, and performs in them. Of course, L and I had to wear our little red boots!
L and I are both wearing Fluevogs - his are the Iggys
Yay! Thank you, Lindi for letting us take a picture!

So, then I had to go to work on Friday after a fun night out!
Good thing I pre-plan most of my outfits!

I had after-work dinner plans with my former clothing store boss, Tammy, for her birthday earlier this week, and she is a very fashionable lady, so I always dress up nice for her.
My white ruffly blouse, last seen while I was steampunkin' out at the Castle on Monday.

The denim vest was worn last in another ruffly ensemble here in October.
I haven't worn this skirt for a while! Not since the April 2012 capsule (recap here). It's a favourite although I always waffle about it until I wear it!

Outerwear:
Added grey wooly toque and gloves and a navy blue/gold dragon silk scarf with my yellow leather jacket.

The stuff:
Wee! Big crazy yellow shoes (last seen here, during Monochromania! week in August). Disco Dutch!

Simple bling, since the skirt is pretty blingy on its own.
 Blue and starbursts!

Vest (Bisou Bisou, consignment), blouse (Uno Due, thrifted), skirt (Bianca Nygard), shoes (Prepare Hi Steady, Fluevog), ring (Wendy Brandes), earrings (local).

L and I did our usual brunch on Sunday.
I like being dressy for brunch. I see people wearing pajama bottoms and thongs to brunch! Horrifying!

My lovely cream brocade blazer, last seen here with my dark florals during my birthday week in October.
I'm wearing a sleeveless grey cashmere-blend cowl-necked sweater under it, last worn here (2nd outfit) in April to hang with friends and play Arkham Horror.

I love the shape of this skirt. I last wore it here (3rd outfit, beware of Disco pictures!) in October.
I just wore knee-high socks (I also had a half-slip on) and my walking shoes. I last wore them here in late October (3rd outfit). I am getting rid of the shoes, though, as after shopping in them for 4 hours, my feet were seriously killing me. Can't have that, sorry!

My belt is my much-loved Pringle of Scotland one.
Hmmm...someone in the background is Up to No Good.
My concession to chilly temps: fur scarf and long leather gloves (I also had my wooly toque, but didn't need it).

Jacket (Le Chateau, consignment), sweater (August Silk, consignment), skirt (Optionelle, consignment), shoes (Marc, thrifted), belt (Pringle of Scotland), earrings (local).

I had some excellent luck in my shopping after brunch. I popped into Rich Rags, a store I don't often shop in (but I do find things there once in a while). I found this gorgeous wooly blue coat...
...for $20.00! I love the dramatic lapels.

I've never heard of the brand Renuar before, but apparently they have been around for 30 years.
I like that stitching detail on the collar, and the nice lining (with red piping!).

I also found this amazing silk dress:
The colour is a fabulous chartreuse and it's a very disco-y shape on. I am excited to give this a try.

It's 100% silk (and it's washable!).
I wasn't familiar with the brand Mary Jo Bruno but she's a California designer who's been around for over 35 years. She seems to do just do lingerie now, so this must be from earlier in her career. Based on the style, I think it is probably 80s/90s. I guess the $10.00 I paid was a score!

I also paid $10.00 for this sheer striped black blouse:
It's by Lida Baday, a Canadian designer, and this is made in Canada.
The cheapest top by her on Holt Renfrew's is $345.00. *choke* Wow, I got a really good deal!

Vizzini was very happy to see me when I got home. Or maybe he just wanted to be fed.
"Gimme food or the coat gets it!"
He never looks guilty.

I stopped in at the Hospice Thrift Store - they have some amazing stuff in right now! Tons of glittery seasonal clothes (including purses) as well as a giant rack of winter coats.

I circled around this beauty then realized what a fool I would be if someone grabbed it while I was hemming and hawing.
I KNOW, right? It's a slightly textured rich cream faux fur. It has that lovely shawl collar, slim sleeves and slightly rounded cut. I think it is an early 80s PSP (Pre-Shoulder-Pad) era coat, based on the label. Also, I found a couple of eBay links describing similar faux fur coats by Apparence Paris as 80s. I'm getting good at figuring out eras!
Did you notice the gorgeous creamy satin lining? This is not a cheap coat (the outside of it still feels silky smooth, not plasticky). I paid $40.00 for it, and I wore it right away.

I strolled up the street to the WIN Boutique and found a couple of items I had to have, including another black suede top.
I think it maybe a sickness - this is my third one! But it's totally different, I swear! This is a real steampunk-y cut, with a high collar, hooks-and-eyes closure up the front and built-in lace cuffs (yes!). it was $75.00, marked down to half, so $37.50. It was too cool to pass up. Of course, it is by Danier Leather.

I found this lovely soft aqua scarf for $2.50.
No brand name, but I think that's a good deal.

I fell in love with yet another fur scarf.
It's like a Muppet! It's a deep blue-grey colour and seriously, I am in love. And for $10.50? Score!

I am always on the lookout for good quality leather belts, so the lovely cutout on this one caught my eye.
I know the name Tony Lama!
I have lots of buckles - I don't need another buckle. But I do like a good belt, and $5.50 is a good deal.

Today, I got up early-ish and got groceries.
Fancy for groceries, eh? I actually had to go to a WW training/intro to new program stuff afternoon session at a local hotel conference.

As part of my employment with WW, I have to maintain my weight (that's part of why I work for them - I want to keep my 50 lbs off!), and at any of our meetings/training sessions we all step on the scales. So I wore light clothing!
The top is my mint green cashmere sweater, last seen here in August with my sailor pants. I have a full slip underneath everything for extra warmth.
"Oh well, I guess I'll photobomb you."
The barnyard skirt was last worn earlier this month here with leather and plaid.
I like how his back leg is poking out so nonchalantly.
The black boots are starting to wear out - I have to keep my eye out for another basic flat riding boot like these! I last wore them here (2nd outfit) to the Emmylou Harris concert last weekend.

I had to debut my furry scarf:
Instantly 100% more crazyass style! It was lightly raining on my walk to the training session, but I had my toque as well as this lovely coat to protect me.

Sweater (Daniel Bishop, consignment), skirt (Gap, thrifted), boots (Aldo, consignment), coat (Danier), scarf (thrifted).

And what a surprise! I and my two receptionists, Betty and Janet, won an award!
Our little Tuesday night meeting's attendance grew by the highest percentage of any other meeting in BC!

I can't wait to show my members on Tuesday!
Such a cool capper to a fun weekend!

I hope you had a great one!

Red, Lavender and Dark Florals

Ah, Monday, my old foe. Back to the gym I went tonight, after a 1+ month absence, so now I am tired and I want to watch the football game. So here we go.
I had fun mixing lavender and pinks and reds in this outfit. Do you see my necklace? Look harder.

This is my dark floral thrifted top, last seen here with more blacks in September.
I'm now down to $2.50 per wear, since I only paid $5.00 for it. Not bad!
The skirt is my lovely buttah-soft red leather number, last worn here (3rd outfit) in August for L's high school reunion.

The stuff:
Killer lavender booties. My feet are a little sore, so easy shoes for me tomorrow! I last wore these here in April with my transitional dishwater blonde hair.

Did you spot my necklace yet? It's the string of flowers!
How good a match is that with my blouse?

Blouse (no label, thrifted), skirt (Ocean West, consignment), booties (Feud), belt (Plum), necklace (locally-made), leather rose cuff (consignment), earrings (Le Chateau).

 Outerwhere? Outerthere!
Isn't it fab? It was deliciously warm in the morning for my walk to work, especially with my new-to-me fluffy fur scarf.
And boilingly hot to walk home in! This will be an awesome winter coat - it's not quite cold enough for it yet!

I'm off! Sorry for not visiting y'all lately - it's been busy, that's all I can say. Thank you so much for reading, commenting and for lurking (I see you, hee hee).

Pirate in Purple and Burgundy

Yar, I felt like a pirate all day!
Partly because of this new-to-me thrifted Danier suede shirt - it has ginormous lace cuffs inset into the sleeves. Not the best thing to be wearing when you're swabbing out the coffee carafes at the end of the day...

I bought the shirt/top/jacket here this past weekend, for $37.50. Yee haw for half price racks at the thrift store!
Due to the shape of the sleeves and the snug fit of the top, not to mention the stand-up collar, I didn't want to do a full, long or swooshy skirt. One Swoosh Factor per outfit - is that a rule? It should be.

Anyway, I went with this short, slightly-pouffed brocade skirt - ah, it's my Soft Goth look, isn't it? I've done it again. I last wore the skirt here in August (just beam me up!).
I matched purple tights to the skirt, then added my favourite burgundy boots and matching leather obi (matchy matchy heaven!). I last wore the boots here in October (with the matching obi again - so predictable!).

The stuff:
Yar, avast! It be pirate booty! Nah, it's just my Myka* necklace and earrings. I treasure these - they are hand-made in Vancouver and they are just gorgeous to wear. I know they weren't cheap (L bought them for me years ago for Christmas) but they are so beautifully-crafted. That means more to me than the cost. Oh, and L does have excellent taste!
*linking 'cause I love, and if you ever get a chance to buy some, it's worth it

Pirate shirt (Danier Leather, thrifted), skirt (Plum), boots (Miz Mooz), necklace/earrings (Myka Designs), obi (locally-made).

Bling Enough: Guess My Plaid

Today, the Senior VP for Western Canada came to our office. I thought I'd go conservative.
The HR lady snorted when I told her that - yeah, the tights are not very conservative. But look! I have loafers on!

This jacket is extremely bling-y - it's trimmed with black ribbon and shiny gold along the collar, cuffs and pockets. It has a red stripe in the plaid. And it's covered with little gold buttons with "G"s on them. I last wore it in the March 2012 capsule (recap here), last time in this outfit. I nearly always wear this jacket with a red and black combination - in fact, the first time I wore it (here, lots of detail pictures) it was with this same skirt!
I have no idea when I last wore this skirt, but it's been a while - it didn't make it into any of the capsules from my 2012-2013 challenge, and I don't think I've worn it since then. Believe me, searching my blog for "Danier" is a futile endeavour. I buy a lot of second-hand Danier Leather!

I did find when I first bought it, though, in January 2011 - I thrifted it for $14.50. So even if I don't wear it that much (and don't get me wrong, I do like it and it fits great), I still keep it.
I'm laughing at Vizzini. He was meowing at me and rubbing all over my legs.
My new-to-me Lida Baday blouse, picked up over the weekend here.
Groovy tights, aren't they? I've only worn them once before, here in October 2012, with my uber-cool locally-made and designed dress. I might just have to bust that dress out for a party again soon!

The jacket was plenty bling-y so the only jewelry (aside from my usual glut of rings) were my gold hoops.
Loafers! I last wore these here in March with green tweed and roses.

I realized while I was showing off my outfit to my hairdresser (after a quick visit at my periodontist - unrelated appointments!), that everything I wore today was second-hand. In fact, my gold hoops cost more than my entire outfit. Let's tally it up:

Jacket (Guess, thrifted): $7.50
Blouse (Lida Baday, consignment): $10.00
Skirt (Danier Leather, thrifted): $14.50
Shoes (Hilary Radley, thrifted): $24.50

That's $34.50 for the whole outfit - my gold hoop earrings were over $200 (they are real gold and locally-made - I've had them for 13+ years; they were a 5th anniversary gift from L). Love that high/low mix!

Almost Primary

Out late tonight having dinner and drinks with the women I work with - there aren't many of us (I work for an IT company), so it's nice for "the girls" to get together once in a while. For those of you who wondered yesterday, the HR lady totally gets my style (and nearly everyone I work with knows about my blog).
Practically a primary colour (red/blue/yellow) mix today. I built the outfit around this groovy scarf that I've had for several years.

The sweater is a neat shade of not-quite-brick-red and not-quite-rust, last worn here (2nd outfit) earlier this month as my Winesday outfit with my long sweater skirt.
I really liked how the colour popped off this wonderful cobalt blue skirt - my much-treasured Andre Courreges vintage haute couture thrifted treasure, last seen here during Monochomania! week in September. Wool and cashmere and yes, only $5.00. I am nearly down to $1.00 per wear. That just gives me the happy dance jitterbug feeling, ya know?
And it makes my butt look good too!
I added a rust 70s vintage belt to help neutralize all that colour, and to bring in the groovy colours in the scarf. The lacy tights are just so fun!

The stuff:
The only thing I'm not wearing today that's non-ethically-sourced is these shoes. They're by Poetic Licence - sadly made in China - but purchased from a local boutique with gift money from my mother-in-law, who doesn't have such ethical dilemmas as I do. But they are mustard yellow! and tweed! and have ribbons! I first wore them here (4th outfit) in October with a steampunk-y outfit for dinner out with Mom and L.

Blue bling:
Thrifted scarf, thrifted belt, locally-made earrings and my Wendy Brandes rings. I am totally going to check out her December cyber-sale*! Her jewelry is amazing.
*linking 'cause I love Wendy, and her jewelry

And now, off to drink some wine and watch TV. Because I can.

Sweater (Bandolino, thrifted), cami (InWear), skirt (Andre Courreges, vintage 80s, thrifted), shoes (Poetic Licence), belt (vintage 70s, thrifted), scarf (thrifted), earrings (locally-made), lapis lazuli ring/Fulvia Ring (Wendy Brandes).

Silk Chartreuse, The Unsafe Polar Bear, and Punk Princess

I think we should have Formal Fridays - screw Casual Fridays. They're full of bad clothing decisions.

But I have dressing up on my mind this week, as the Unlimited Woman Awards (waaa! tickets sold out! in which I am a finalist in the Style category!) are happening on Wednesday night. Some of my wonderful women friends came over today for a try-on of my dress-up clothes this afternoon. We had wine spritzers and chocolate and man, we made some killer outfits, including mine!

Back to Friday.
Seriously, I am in love with this dress. The colour, the buttery feel of the silk, the shape. It is beautifully made and was a pleasure to wear. It's got to be 80s, but I'm not quite sure when. I paid $10.00 for this awesome Mary Jo Bruno dress here last weekend.
The loose boatneck allowed me to show off a bit of my ink (I let a few people at work take a gander down the back).
I liked how the chartreuse went with the olive boots. I last wore them here with green and stripes about a month ago.

Bigass gold bling:
A mix of shiny, yellow gold and brass. Love that necklace so much.

Dress (Mary Jo Bruno, consignment), boots (Pegabo), belt (thrifted), necklace (thrifted, D'Orlan), earrings (homegrown vintage 90s, LA Express), ring (consignment), spinner ring (Twang & Pearl).

After work on Friday, I met up with 5 of my Book Club women for a night out. We met up for dinner then went to see the Blue Bridge Theatre's production of Sam Sheppard's play "True West"* at Victoria's famous Roxy Theatre* (it's a quonset hut*). It was very good for a local production, loved the renovations to the Roxy, and they have wine at the concession as well as popcorn! Woot!
*linking 'cause I love local arts, and love this old building (I saw "Rocky Horror" there for the first time!).

While standing around outside afterwards, we actually got meet and congratulate the two lead actors on a great show. Recommended, if you're looking for a night out!

My warm and wooly coat was amazing in the crisp morning/evening air.
I may have been a little tipsy after dinner (and wine at intermission), and as we walked back to Cat's place, I was dubbed "The Unsafe Polar Bear", as in, "Don't run across the street, like the Unsafe Polar Bear!"

Heh.

On Saturday, L and I met up with our friend Andrew for brunch. I went a little bit punk-y, because why not?
I'm inspired by Megan Mae and her real-hawk, but mine's a faux-hawk. A little mousse and hairspray and yeah, man, I'm a punk princess.

Stud-muffin sweatshirt, yo.
Last seen here in September with heavy metal during Monchromania! week.
The skirt is my long denim mermaid, last worn here (2nd outfit) earlier this month for the Emmylou Harris concert.

I wore my new-to-me blue coat with the ensemble, purchased also last weekend here for $20.00.
I know, score, right? Such a cute coat!

The boots are my classic Aldos, last seen here (um, 3rd outfit? with the barn skirt) last weekend. I do wear my faves a lot.

I'm wearing my leather/crystal Bauxo necklace with white gold hoops, nothing overly special for accessories.

Coat (Renuar, consignment), top (Silence + Noise, consignment), skirt (InWear, consignment), boots (Aldo, consignment), necklace (Bauxo).

I'll post pics of all of our try-ons with the wrap-up on Thursday (fingers crossed, hope I win!).

Cranes and Snowflake...and an Awards Tease

$

Ah, this is a short week! I am so excited!
All not-recently-worn things today: particularly my crane cardigan and my snowflake skirt.

The cardigan was last seen in the October 2012 capsule (recap here), and was only worn once (here). It was on the fence then, and I am still waffling over it. I liked it enough today to keep it another round.
The skirt is a favourite, although I tend to wear it more on the weekends for some reason. I last wore it here (3rd outfit) in April with a blue sweater...on the weekend!
I have a little red sweater on under the cardi for extra warmth and for peeking out the bottom of my cardi. I like the black diamond shapes on the back of my shoes.

The stuff:
I last wore these shoes in August here as a swap-out for a pair that hurt my feet.

Yesterday afternoon, Elaine, Yvonne, Cat and Tracy and I dug into my wardrobe and my jewelry boxes to put together our outfits for the Ultimate Woman Awards on Wednesday night. We had a blast - everyone is put together, and I took photos for reference for getting dressed (sometimes it's all blur, especially when you've had a little champagne and some white wine spritzers as we did).

I was reminded of some of my fun vintage stuff:
Oh, yeah, Mom's bracelet, and oh yeah, Grandma J's earrings.

Cardigan (Lucky Brand, consignment), sweater (Reitman's, consignment), skirt (J.J.F., consignment), shoes (Presence Impulse, Fluevog), belt (Club Monaco), bracelet (vintage 60s, Mom's), earrings (vintage 60s, Grandma J's), ring (consignment).

I took pictures of everyone's outfits, as I noted, including mind. Here are a couple of teasers of what I'll be wearing.

Top:
We'll all be wearing hats or fascinators!

And bottom:
Duh, I have to wear a pair of Fluevogs!

I'll have another tease tomorrow, and I'll likely be blogging about it on Thursday or Friday (I have both days off this week).

Kim's Suit...and Last Bit of Tease

I hear suits are all the rage these days, and I was feeling lazy last night...so out comes one of my suits.
'Course, this one is special. Not only is it made in Canada, but I bought it second-hand. And it fits like a dream.

Did I mention it was Kim Cattrall's? Yes, it belonged to her - her sister (who lives on Vancouver Island) consigned it.
I last wore the skirt of it here in October (scroll down past Vizzini sniffing the Traveling Yellow Skirt), and the jacket of it here in February (that's the last time I wore this thrifted sleeveless green sweater too).

I have only worn the suit together once before, here (2nd outfit) in September 2012.
Pretty smashing, eh? I wore it open all day for comfort. I run around a lot at work.
It makes my butt look good. Heh. I love the chocolate brown trim on it. So luxurious!

The stuff:
A second-hand suit with second-hand shoes. I last wore these thrifted Nine West shoes here (2nd outfit) in October for my birthday week.

Orange bling:
The pin was a birthday gift from Mom several years ago.

Suit (Pink Tartan, consignment, Kim Cattrall's), top (Harve Bernard, thrifted), shoes (Nine West, thrifted), brooch (gift from Mom), earrings (Plum).

Someone's been watching me.
It's rare for him to sit still for long!

Okay, more teases for my outfit tomorrow night!
I have never worn the main part of the outfit on the blog before.
Are those red leather gloves? Is that a silly question?
You know me and my floofy underskirts!

Unlimited Women, Suede and Bling, and Thanks

I didn't win. Let's get that over with.

The gala Unlimited Woman Awards have come and gone, and despite the super-duper strong vibes from all my friends, co-workers, co-bloggers and readers...I didn't win. I'm cool with it - sure, I was a little disappointed, but even though I wasn't THE Unlimited Woman of Style, I am still AN Unlimited Woman of Style.

I'm proud to have been a Nominee and a Finalist, and I'm thankful to my amazing group of loving friends who nominated me:
We rule
From left (back): Karen (in black and white), Caro (in multi-coloured silk), Tracy (in black beaded vintage).
From left (front): Yvonne (in red and black), Cat (in magenta and blue), Elaine (in autumn-coloured vintage), Vero (in a tutu).

And that's me hamming it up on the far right.

So, I'm going to dive into my outfits from Wednesday, Wednesday night, then I'll chat a bit about what awesome friends I have (and their styles as well), and our fun night out at the awards.

Here's my outfit.
Fab dress, isn't it? I bought it way back here (scroll down to the bottom shopping loot shoot) in June for $40.00 on consignment. It's by Planet (a very pricey brand sold at the Bay department store), and I remember this being in the store about 4 years ago for around $300.00.

I layered my black floofy underskirt and my burgundy vintage slip under it to really fluff out the skirt. My beaded red flower is pulling up the front of the skirt a bit to show the layers.
My first unveiling of my back fully inked. I will be wearing the same outfit for my company's Christmas gala next weekend.

The second wear of my Tierre Joline hat, last seen here, 2nd outfit, at the Art Gallery in October.
I borrowed these vintage clip-on earrings from Elaine - they pinched my ears something awful. Yeowtch!

The stuff:
My Fluevog "bandage" shoes, the O'Hara Listen Ups, last worn here with a bare leg and blue and orange in July. I wore black lace tights to really pop them.

The purse is my newly-acquired piece (here, on my shop with my niece Zoe, earlier this month) by Fiveleft. It was a dream - it held a lot and just felt so good in my hand.

A mix of lady-like and rock-n-roll:
Leather obi, leather gloves, my grandmother's jet and rhinestone necklace, and some fake pearls from the 80s.

I had to wear this insane Little Drummer Boy suede jacket as my outerwear:
I have only worn it once before, back here in January 2012 with my snowflake skirt. I love the crazy big frog closures on it, and the not-quite-the-80s-but-still-feeling-it shoulder pads.

Jacket (Danier, thrifted), dress (Planet, consignment), slip (Suzette Lingerie, consignment), floofy underskirt (Noa Noa), shoes (Listen Up O'Hara, Fluevog), purse (Fiveleft), hat (Tierre Joline), gloves (Danier Leather), belt (locally made), earrings (loaner from Elaine, vintage 60s), necklace (Grandma J's, vintage 60s), pin (on skirt, vintage), pearl necklaces (homegrown vintage, The Bay, 80s).

I was a bit of a wreck at work on Wednesday; anxious about the awards, nervous, excited, stressed about work (trying to get 2 days' of work done in 8 hours). Aside from a small blow-up at one of the directors, a hug from one of the managers, and a near miss of tears at my desk, I made it through the day and got out of work on time. It helped that I was dressed up.
Dressing up always helps!

This is my fabulous pale grey suede dress, last seen in the November 2013 capsule (recap here), where I wore it twice (last here,3rd outfit).
My jacket hasn't been worn since the December 2013 capsule (recap here), in which it was worn 4 times (last here on Christmas Eve).
I have my vintage blue lacy slip on under it (you can see a bit of it at the neckline), and my blue lace tights. Sadly, the tights popped two holes on the lower leg area so after many years of faithful wear, they are now toast.

I bundled up in my most wonderful coat:
Someone came in for some lovin'
The coat is by Desigual, and it was last worn here in April over my green satin dress for Alison's surprise birthday party.
"I pose like you!"
I get many compliments from strangers when I wear this coat. It is pretty freakin' gorgeous in person, all full of rich textures.

The stuff:
My shoes caused the first hole in the tights - danged zippers on the inside! I last wore these shiny metallic booties here in October in one of my steampunky outfits.

I like to break out the bling - the really shiny stuff! - as we get closer to Christmas.
The necklace is vintage (stamped "Allain"), but the rest is all modern.

Dress (Danier Leather, consignment), jacket (Ricki's, consignment), shoes (Jeffrey Campbell), necklace (vintage 60s, Allain), pin (The Bay, early 00s), sparkly ring (Melanie Lynne), lapis lazuli ring (Wendy Brandes), coat (Desigual).

I rushed home after work - Tracy came over right after work too - and we had about 20 minutes to get ready for the awards. Thank goodness we'd done the big try-on last Sunday! It sure made getting dressed easier. I redid my make-up.

Tracy wore my beaded early 60s "wiggle" dress:
It's handmade. I last put it on here in 2010 for my "Never Seen" series of posts, with a picture of me in about 2002 wearing it for a party. I've had it for 15-ish years. It fit Tracy perfectly!
Picture from the Sunday try-ons
She also wore my Grandma J's double-strand pearl necklace, my black feather fascinator and Elaine's pearl bracelet. I loaned her my vintage 50s red wool swing coat, my white fur scarf and one of my sequined purses.

All 8 of us met up at a local pub for some wine and a quick dinner, then we dashed off to the newly-rebuilt Oak Bay Beach Hotel. We arrived just before the event started.
We grabbed a row near the back. Forgive the crap lighting.

Vero, Yvonne, Caro and Cat.
Vero wore a vintage tutu under a fluffy black skirt, and wonderful pink heels, and Caro (middle) wore a vintage 80s colour-blocked silk print dress with taupe booties. Gorgeous!

Here's Yvonne's outfit, as put together on Sunday at my place:
That's Yvonne's wedding dress! We added my vintage 80s top hat (rescued from L's former boss' trunk - it belonged to his wife), and some early '00s stretch velvet gloves from my old job at Fairweather.
Yvonne wore her own black shoes, and we accessorized her with my Grandma J's 1950s/60s copper jewelry set by Renoir.
The vintage mink stole finished the outfit perfectly. I last wore it for my work's Christmas party a year ago, here (2nd outfit).
We pinned up a bit more of Yvonne's dress with my thrifted copper brooch. I love this picture - so cool.

Cat's outfit try-on from Sunday:
She brought over her black taffeta Trapper Jane dress, and we added my magenta cardigan, my Smoking Lily obi, my blue floofy underskirt, along with two of my vintage pins (and earrings and necklace), and a bracelet of Elaine's.
Cat's hat was from one of the vintage fairs. She ended up wearing the ankle-strap shoes.
Of course, my purple vintage velvet coat was the perfect topper for the outfit. This was such an amazing outfit all put together - it really suited Cat.

At the event again, from left, Karen in her own brand of steampunk-y goodness, with a vintage hat (with veil), white top, black gloves and funky jewelry. She wore a black leather pencil skirt over a fluffy white skirt for an amazing look.
Elaine on the right wore a vintage 50s dress, with a vintage hat with feathers. She borrowed my black feather boa and black beaded purse.

The woman who won in my category seemed really happy about it - there were so many amazing women at the event. It would have been nice to have won, but seriously? Look at my awesome friends. I am rich in many other ways!

I know that what I do with style, fashion and clothes affects other people in a positive way. I love helping women feel good about themselves, and their bodies, and I strive to encourage them to dress to show their personalities. I am happy to give away clothes, loan pieces, and I feel good about ethically shopping, both to support my local charities, and to give back to local artists, designers and manufacturers. I don't need an award to feel good about myself; I try to give what I want to get from the world and people around me. It works - and I love my life.

After the event, we wandered out into the lobby for pictures. A lot of these are candid (and possibly wine-influenced, heh), so forgive the blurriness.
Leather couches in front of the fireplace. Check out Karen's amazing skirt ensemble and the glorious colours in Caro's dress.

Lurking backgrounders.
People came up to us all night to say how incredible we all looked! We had our pictures taken by Matthew (hello!) of Snap! Magazine, and I'll be watching for us in the January edition.

Woo! We're fabulous!
The Oak Bay Beach Hotel is quite grand. In its former incarnation, Tracy actually got married here (she's now divorced, but L and I were there!). I decorated the lobby of the hotel and its Christmas tree every year for about 8 years, back when I worked in the Christmas store in the '90s (before I met L).

One of the hotel's employees noticed us climbing around on their furniture, so came over and took some pictures for us.
Karen's biting my leg - what a tart!
So fabulous!

A blurry, but better look at Vero's tutu and pink shoes.
She also wore a pink scarf, and pink flowers in her hair.

My Unlimited Women friends...
I like the slightly disapproving look on the people in the back near the piano.
I treasured this night. What a blast!

After we finished taking pictures, I stood in front of the fireplace and gave my friends the speech I would have given if I had won.
Lounging on the table, hee hee
"Wow, I'm really glad I drew on my eyebrows tonight.
[pause for laughing]

Thank you so much to my Thick Six: Caro, Vero, Cat, Yvonne and Karen, and to my fashionable partners in crime, Elaine and Tracy. You are all incredible women to me.

Here's to women over "a certain age" not becoming invisible! Here's to you, and to all of us!"

As a finalist, I was given a flower pin, which I stuck to my hat.
A nice touch.

And now, I am enjoying a lovely US Thanksgiving Day of football, my guy friends, Nick and Casey, and L (and Vizzini), chili, and chilling.
My Heismann Trophy pose, with cat looking for food
Tonight, I have Book Club, where I can hang with my friends again. I'm off tomorrow as well, and we have a party to go to on Saturday night.

Wishing all of my US friends a happy Thanksgiving. I am grateful for all of the wonderful people in my life. Thank you again for all of your support, good vibes and friendship.

Cheers,
Sheila

Long Weekend Wrap-Up: the Usual Suspects - Shopping and Cat Pictures

Well, the long weekend is nearly over, and it's been a slice. Lots of fun things happening, as the festive season kicks off!

I'm linking up to "Visible Monday" over at Patti's Not Dead Yet Style, as well as Judith at Style Crone's"Hat Attack" for my most recent hat-wearing incident.

After a day of watching football on Thursday, I put on real clothes for Book Club.
Spiky hair because weekend.
One of my many long-sleeved layering tees, under my caramel sweater (last seen here in October, way down at the bottom).

Yes, I'm wearing jeans! They are actually cropped with little zippers at the bottom (last seen here in September with a Hawaiian shirt).
I'm wearing my over-the-knee olive suede boots (last worn here last week with fabulous chartreuse) and my Betsey Johnson coat. Our discussed book was "Out of Africa" (most of us also went to the movie during the reading of it), so I brought my sprinbok fur purse.

Coat (Betsey Johnson, thrifted), sweater (Coldwater Creek, thrifted), tee/earrings (Plum), jeans (Sandwich, swap from Caro), boots (Pegabo), purse (consignment), gloves (Parkhurst).

On Friday, L and I hung out together all day. It's so awesome to just be able to chill with your best friend.
We went for brunch, then L did some banking while I browsed around some of the Oak Bay (where the rich people live) consignment shops.

My grey cashmere blend sweater was last seen here (3rd outfit) in November for brunch. I guess it's a brunch sweater.
I planned my skirt to go with my outerwear - my coat has no pockets and I require pockets! Who doesn't love a skirt with pockets? I last wore this amazing suede skirt of fabulousness here (3rd outfit, with caramel velvet) on our arty weekend back in October.
The boots are my grey felt, last worn here (2nd outfit, with turquoise fringed suede) in early November, with the same outfit. I'm a lazy matcher, heh.
Blue coat of happiness! I love the sunny blue, the dramatic lapels and the short fit of this jacket.

I dropped in on one of my old favourites of the Victoria consignment scene, the House of Savoy in Oak Bay. The last time I went there, I found Kim Cattrall's suit! It's a store that's worth a visit about twice a year for me - easily one of the priciest of the consignment stores, but good deals can be had if you search around a bit.

I found this gorgeous marigold yellow sweater for only $20.00.
I love the big wide hem - it will be good for belting and keeping definition. It's by Spense - I have found a couple of tops by them over the years, and the quality has been good.

This is my risky purchase, but since it was drastically marked down on the clearance rack, I figured, "What the heck?"
Okay, it's a denim dress. But all that pocketry and zippage is completely an optical illusion! The studs and buttons are real, but there are no pockets, belt-loops, flaps or anything on this. It buttons up the front and has a side zip.

It's also backless.
Also fake back pockets. I don't know how I'm going to style this - likely with a top underneath.

The label was vaguely familiar:
Zoiks, I just looked at their online shop* - the cheapest dress on sale is $298.00 US!
*info only, buy second hand!

It's a perfect fit on me - I had to have it. It was only $24.00.
"Feed me"
I usually like to try on all my new purchases again at home and get a good look at them with the contents of my closet.

Vizzini had the devil in him:
"I swallow your soul"
He was attacking my feet.

I'll probably never wear it like this due to bra issues, but it's fun to show my whole back.
Bird socks are awesome
No slit in the skirt, so it's tricky for running about.

How would you style this challenging dress? Ideas welcome!

L and I went for brunch at our usual Saturday spot. I had to wear my new bright sweater to counter the grey and rainy day.
Such a great colour!
The screen print is a beech tree.
The skirt is...a cape! I like it better as a skirt - it has nice weight and it's warm. Plus, pointy hem! I last wore it here (way down) for my birthday weekend in October.
The boots are my dark brown Miz Mooz, last worn for Winesday (here, past my shopping pics) in early November.
Vizzini is rolling about amusingly
Outerwear includes my crackle-finish Danier coat (thrifted for $16.50, score! a few months ago), my gloves, hat and a silk vintage scarf.

The stuff:

Sturdy pieces for shopping.

Coat (Danier Leather, thrifted), sweater (Spense, consignment), skirt/cape (Smoking Lily, thrifted), boots (Miz Mooz), hat (Wooden Ships), gloves (Parkhurst), leather cuff (SkinZnHydez), leaf cuff (About Tine), earrings (local), ring (Twang & Pearl).

After brunch, I headed off for a good long search through the WIN warehouse store.

I don't know if I've mentioned it before, but I collect mid-century (50s-70s) amber glassware. I found a fabulous mixed selection for only a few bucks!
All between 50 cents and $2.95 per piece
The top left one is part of the same set as some of my Grandma J's glasses - it's probably from the early 60s. The middle back cup is later, probably 70s, as is the cup on the upper right. I needed some little shallow dishes (for dips and such), and found the front two for cheap. Both are modern but I liked the simple shapes.

The little middle cup is a later example of the "King's Thumbprint" pattern (image search) - I have quite a bit of it from the '60-70s (plates, cups, bowls), and it's great to find a new piece. I collect the amber primarily, followed by the olive colour. The tumbler on the right is modern but had a nice heft to it.

I did well on shoes, and am proving that you should try on anything that appeals to you, regardless of marked size.
Classic black kitten heels with a suede bow and wrap at the heel
I wear a size 9-9.5 shoe, 40 in European sizing. As you can see, these are marked as size 11 with a sticker.

On the sole, however, they're marked a 41, which is a size 10, roughly. These are a tight size 10, which is probably why the original owner donated them. My good luck, and they were only $16.50!
The brand is a Canadian mall chain - good quality shoes. I was very pleased with these - they will transition in as my basic flat black shoe, as my pointy-toed ones are getting worn out.

I hemmed and hawed a while over these, but ultimately, I couldn't pass them up.
They are hugely 80s, with that long narrow almond to, and the elongated short heel. The vamp is high, there's a bigass metal shield and a bow on them...you don't get much more 80s than these!

I recall Bruno Magli being a big designer back in the day. Unlike my last 80s shoe purchase a couple of summers ago (here, beware of grossness), these are fully leather, inside and out.
Made in Italy
I have been on the lookout for a good pair of brown flats and I like how these are sort of a men's wear vibe.

Remember when you could get different shoe widths? Whatever happened to that? Please also admire my score of $11.50 for these beauties.
And another size 10 fitting me perfectly. Do you think shoe sizes have changed, or is it just the same inconsistency there is in clothing?

I find better quality of clothing in the vintage sections. Take this fantastic cerulean blue skirt, for example:
It's a long pencil shape (past the knee), fully lined, snap and tab closure above the hidden zipper at the back. The fabric is a lovely wool-blend crepe, which I can tell by feel - it has no label at all. I'd guess this is from the 50s.

Score!
You couldn't buy a new wool-blend lined skirt for that!

My leather addiction continues.
This is the most accurate colour
Seriously? A purple leather skirt? With pockets? Sign me up!

Classic 80s high-waisted with a big ol' snap.
Oh, sweet, here's (ebay link) the matching jacket and this same skirt. Someone had that skirt shortened - you can see the seams that on my skirt are mid-way are down near the hem on this one.

I love that vintage leather is so much cheaper than new.
I'm happy with $13.50.

I had to have these - they are the exact same as my cognac Gap leather pants!
They are unfortunately about 2" shorter than my cognac ones, but they fit just as well. I wonder if I can make them work as a cropped length?

Still, I didn't pay much for them, so even if they are a bust, I don't feel that bad.
I paid $69.99 for my other pair - $24.50 is a great deal for these.

I briefly ducked into the Beacon Ave Thrift Store - it's really small, messy and rather hit and miss. This time, I had a hit!

Jacket:
Bracelet sleeve length, 100% wool, deep burgundy, pockets, gorgeous satin lining. Slightly looser than a fully-fitted jacket.

And it's a suit! Skirt included!
The perfect length pencil skirt, with a sewn-in kick pleat at the back.

A huge deal on both pieces.
Yes! $18.00 for a wool suit? I couldn't find much on Hettermarks but they seem to have been a Swedish company.

My suit was made in Sweden, and sold at W&J Wilson, a local Victoria institution since 1862.
I would guess that this is from the 80s - it has the same very high-end feel to it as my Andre Courreges skirt.
The skirt has 4 separate hanger loops, and the wool hasn't got a single moth-hole. I am so excited to wear this!

On the way home I briefly stopped in at the Hospice Thrift Shop. I found a couple of pieces.
Mysteriously uncropped photo
I love the magenta colour and the soft shape of this blouse. It's by Cleo and was $15.00 - that's a bit high for a mall store, but it's all for a good cause.

I nabbed this heavenly soft silk scarf from the $2.00 bin.
I love the vivid colours.

L and I went to his work Christmas party on Saturday night. I've been meaning to wear this dress again.
A slight variation the last time I wore it here, for my birthday in 2012. It's by local designer Bridget Savard, and I paid $25.00 on consignment for it. Down to $12.50 per wear!

I did rocker-ish accessories:, including my leather obi. That was such a good deal at $14.95 (a few years ago on consignment). I have never seen a black leather obi under $70.00.
Ink show!
I wore my long black coat with gloves - I also had a fuzzy toque and little fur scarf for the walk home.
L packed us both both walking shoes; we left around midnight and hoofed it several blocks to the bus stop. L and I both won door prizes (chocolates and a bike light set).

The stuff:
Chains, leather and heavy metal.

Had to bring out the big guns to represent for L.
Killer shoes! I paid $25.00 for these at a vintage fair 2 years ago and I'm sure I'm under $5.00 per wear now.

Jacket (Vassalli, consignment), dress (Bridget Savard, consignment), shoes (Versace, thrifted), belt (consignment), necklace (gift from Tina), bag (Fiveleft), leather cuff (Guess, thrifted), metal cuff (thrifted), sparkle ring (Melanie Lynne), steel ring ('50s, vintage).

As promised: cat pictures!
"I want to bite your foot!"
Vizzini likes to keep me company when I'm unpacking my shopping purchases.

Look at that deceptive cuteness!
"Put your hand near me and I'll attack!"
He gets all worked up, roly-polying back and forth.
"Pet me! Play with me!"
 He barely sits still.
"Wait! Must lick!"
Hee, turkey leg!

What time is it?
"Time to feed me, woman!"

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend - Happy Thanksgiving to my US friends!

Groovy Baby! Red Leather Pants and Shiny-Shiny Brocade

Wow, I can't believe it's December already! How the heck did that happen?

As you may or may not know, I like to bust out the really glittery, shiny and sparkly stuff for the month of December. I can't decorate at home (Vizzini Monster Eats All), but I can sure decorate myself!
Okay, you know I had to wear the red leather pants ASAP, right?

These are of course, the sweet $24.95 leather pants I thrifted on the weekend (here). I turned the cuffs up once and pressed them into place and they held beautifully at this cropped length all day.
How did I ever live without a cream satin ruffled blouse with Major Cuffs? I had a few comparisons to Austin Powers today. I last wore this blouse here (2nd outfit) in October as part of my Art Gallery ensemble.
Super shiny jacket! I last wore it here in August with mostly reds. I really love it and get tons of compliments on it.

The stuff:
The new cropped length of the pants works well with a nice loafer. I always show these off - I only paid $2.00 for them, over a year ago! I haven't worn them since our trip to Vancouver in March (here).

Big ol' bling:
I liked the necklace over the blouse - it helped balance all that ruffle and shine business. The earrings remind me of snowflakes.

Jacket (Aldo, thrifted), blouse (CAbi, consignment), leather pants (Gap, thrifted), shoes (Two Lips, thrifted), necklace (Plum), earrings (locally-made).

This is a lot of colour!
I'd like to point out that my neighbour's bike collection (my usual background here) is now gone! Woo!
Yeah, I had to wear a bunch of my new-to-me things from this weekend (here): the purple leather skirt, the Bruno Magli shoes, the lovely silk scarf. And look how nice they are all playing together!
The skirt was awesome to wear, although the slit at the back is not very high, so I can't take very big steps.
The brown sweater is a Banana Republic one, last seen way way back in the February 2012 capsule (recap here), where I wore it 3 times (last time here). I bought it back in late 2009 and wore it first here in January 2010 - I thrifted it for only $12.00 - sweet!

The stuff:
The shoes felt weird at first. They built them differently in the 80s - there is less cushioning, but the construction is better. Maybe all the cushioning they put in shoes now is actually covering poorer construction? I don't know - but these were made in Italy, and they felt gorgeous and I have not a smidge of foot pain.

Red bling:
But the scarf was the piece that really tied it all together. Who knew you could mix violet, cobalt blue, brown and red together?

Sweater (Banana Republic, thrifted), skirt (Chia, vintage 80s, thrifted), shoes (Bruno Magli, vintage 80s, thrifted), belt/bracelet (Plum), leather cuff (Rimanchik), ring (Oscar & Libby's), lapis lazuli ring (Wendy Brandes), earrings (local), scarf (thrifted).

Cerulean Blue and Leopard

Brrr! The temperatures here have dropped to an icy-cold zero to minus 4 degrees (that's Canadian temperatures; it's in the high 20s/low 30s for the rest of you). It's clear and sunny, but man, we delicate West Coast flowers are chilly.
I actually went out twice today without a jacket! Foolish, foolish Sheila.

I had to wear (I had to!) my new-to-me cerulean blue skirt today - I loved how it went with this pretty leopard cardigan. I thrifted the skirt on the weekend (here) for $6.50 - what a score!
The cardigan was last worn here in July - coincidentally, I wore it with this same blue belt AND I whined about being a delicate flower due to the heatwave we'd been experiencing then. I'm so predictable.
The skirt is such an awesome fit - I loved wearing it all day. The wonderful wool crepe was a dream - didn't wrinkle a bit (not that I actually sat today; I was far too busy for that!).

The stuff:
My new-to-me black shoes were uber-comfy. I thrifted them this past weekend at the same time as the skirt for $16.50.

Some bling:
I am bummed that I missed out on Wendy Brandes' Cyber Monday sale - there were some amazing deals! But everything I clicked on had already been sold. Ah, well, I shall console myself with these gorgeous rings of hers. Did any of you manage to snag a piece?

Cardigan (XXI, consignment), skirt (no label, thrifted), shoes (Town Shoes, thrifted), belt (Danier Leather), necklace (Grandma J's, vintage 50s), earrings (Jacob), lapis lazuli and Fulvia Ring (Wendy Brandes).

Power, Suit and Snow

It snowed today! Well, for Victoria it snowed. I think we might have had 1 centimeter sift slowly down over the duration of the day. But it made everyone feel excited and Christmassy, which was fun.
Fun until the power went out tonight just as it got dark! All of downtown (where I work) lost power, right to my house and past that! It came back on and then off, and then on and then off - again - until it finally has settled at "on" for the last few hours. You don't realize how dependent we are on electricity until we don't have it!

Anyway, all is good, and look! I have another suit on! I couldn't resist wearing this gloriously rich dark red suit today. Seriously, it's just gorgeous. I had so many people admire it and then be stunned when I told them I paid $18.00 for it (last weekend, here).
I switched the pin to the other lapel when I realized the collar covered it up.
The blouse is my recently worn (here a couple of weeks ago in November) black sheer striped Lida Baday - it was only $10.00, so not including the shoes, my whole outfit cost $28.00.
Done up. I originally thought this suit was 80s, like my Andre Courreges cashmere/wool suit, but now I think this suit might be early 60s, the Jacqueline Kennedy era. The jacket is boxier than modern cuts - not like the ultra tailoring of the 80s.
Overall, this suit was a pleasure to wear. I can't wait to play with the pieces individually too! This is a lifetime keeper piece. Love it.

The stuff:
Fluevogs so that I don't look like a little old lady, heh heh (no offense to little old ladies, especially the one whose old suit ended up at a thrift store). I last wore these way way back in March (here), with a blouse that I ended up just recently putting in the giveaway bag. I paid $99.00 for them, which is about a third of what they cost new.

Copper bling.
I have lost one of my earrings...aw, booooooo. I was struggling with my giant Unsafe Polar Bear jacket and my crossbody bag (in the dark) as I left work, so hopefully, I dropped it under my desk. I really hope I didn't lose it while walking home in the pitch dark in a dusting of snow.

Suit (Hettermarks, vintage 60s, thrifted), blouse (Lida Baday, consignment), shoes (Qtee Mini, Fluevog, consignment), brooch (thrifted), cuff (Renoir, vintage 60s, Grandma J), earring(s) (Renoir, vintage 60s).

Hey! I'm back! It's been a busy weekend, but I'm looking forward to a quiet week and I'm feeling good. I didn't find the missing copper Renoir earring, sadly, but eh, it's just stuff. I don't get too upset about it (not even when Vizzini eats a pair of Fluevogs).

Where were we? Oh, yes, Friday.
It's getting dark in the mornings now
First wear of this amazing dress, which I purchased on consignment last weekend (here) for $24.00. The denim softened up considerably over the day; I don't think this dress has ever been worn!
It's hard to see, but I have white striped tights on. I love them dearly, but they are getting old - I've had them since 2010. Check it out, here - all I have still have from that outfit are the tights and the jewelry. I need some new tights!
Vizzini's been cranky this weekend because of the cold
Bam! And then you see the back! That's my new-to-me thrifted blouse (also purchased last weekend).

The stuff:
Best Shoes Ever. Sorry, they just are. I last wore them here in October while being an empress.

Silver bling:
I like the "heartbeat" pattern of the steel one, and the radial design of the other one.

Dress (Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti, consignment), blouse (Cleo, thrifted), shoes (Poetic Licence), steel ring (vintage 50s), silver ring (The Bay).

I headed to the mall after work to buy tights. It's extremely difficult to find tights secondhand that haven't been worn, and it's also tricky to find basic ones that are ethically made. I sucked it up like a big girl. I really hated being in the mall, though. Ugh.
This should last me up for a year or so, at least. I loved some of the patterned tights (aren't the polka dot ones fun?), but was disappointed to see that apparently bright-coloured tights are out. Good thing I stocked up when they were in style!

On Saturday morning, L and I went for brunch, then ventured out to power-shop for Christmas gifts for our families. We're done! We just have to get each other gifts now - we just do stockings, but we tend to spoil each other.
It is still frigidly cold out, so I'm layered up with a slip under this and nice thick tights. It was sunny out for most of the weekend.
I last wore this mustard sweater here in March with my tiki skirt.
I adore this skirt - it's such a great cut. Plus it flaps around marvelously. Bizarrely, I last wore it the same weekend as the sweater, here in March. The boots are my Fluevog Mini Babycakes, last worn in November ,here.

Outerwear:
This Betsey Johnson jacket is turning into a weekend jacket. I've had the brown faux fur scarf and matching cuffed gloves for a few years (made in Canada).

Jacket (Betsey Johnson, thrifted), gloves/scarf (Parkhurst), sweater (Pria), skirt (Danier Leather, thrifted), boots (Babycake Mini, Fluevog), leather cuff (Catalyst Leather), leather cuff (SkinZnHydez).

After a mid-afternoon nap, I got ready for my company's annual Holiday Gala - although I said I was going to wear the same outfit as I wore to the Unlimited Woman Awards, I did change up a few things.
That look on my face is "Dang! I'm freezing!"
I liked it with blue even more! I last wore this dress to the awards a couple of weeks ago, but this time I layered both my blue and my black Noa Noa floofy underskirts under it. I was Ultra-Swooshy! I last wore the black skirt that night, and Cat wore the blue skirt with her outfit that night.
The belt is one that I bought for the Victoria Steam Expo here in April 2012 - I paid $5.00 for it at the WIN thrift store. The back of it is elastic.
My coworkers checked out my ink.

The shoes are all kinds of fabulousness. I danced in them all night!

I wore my black feather fascinator instead of a hat, and wore my Grandma J's faux pearls.
And my blue lapis lazuli ring by Wendy, of course!

Dress (Planet, consignment), underskirts (Noa Noa), shoes (Listen Up O'Hara, Fluevogs), fascinator (Heart's Content), belt (vintage 80s, thrifted), necklace (Grandma J's), ring (Wendy Brandes).

Today, I walked to town to get groceries then over to Fairfield to meet Leslie of Hostess of the Humble Bungalowfame, for brunch and a shop at My Sister's Closet.
I know, after the previous outfit, it's practically plain!

I dressed for trying stuff on: easy on/off shoes and top, minimal jewelry and a skirt that doesn't necessarily have to be removed.
The black cashmere sweater hasn't been worn for a while. Black. Plain. Basic. But cashmere, and lovely and snuggly warm. It's just not a terribly fabulous piece. It was last seen in the November 2012 all-neutral capsule (recap here), where I wore it twice.
I love this Plum brocade skirt. I actually saw one in the same cut but a different fabric in the consignment store today! I last wore it here in November when I was a pirate.

Leslie and I both did really well - we both found 4 items. That's such a great store, but I only go once every couple of months because I always find too many things!

Like...my New Year's Eve dress!
It's by Bellissima, and is made in the USA! It was $38.98 and is a nice iridescent red/black mix. It is one-shoulder, but the bodice has boob-shapers in it and fits me perfectly, so it will work great with my strapless bra. It has a bigass bow on the shoulder - but you know I never shy away from bigass anything! I'm excited to style this up for a fun evening out with 13 of my closest friends!

This lovely teal t-shirt-y material dress was slotted in with the t-shirts and labelled a tunic.
Nope, it's a dress. It's by Kersh, and it was $22.98. The colour is very flattering on me.

My Sister's Closet is the best store for shoes. Leslie found a pair of red suede Geox loafers, and I found these sweet leather boots.
I like the folded-down "cuff" look. They were $39.98 and are by Aerosoles.
The heel is not too high - I think I'll be able to wear these all day without much strain.
I always check to see how much wear shoes have had.
I like the back zip. These were a size 8.5, but they fit me perfectly. I usually wear a 9/9.5/40.

These made my heart sing!
YES. Brown canvas floral Doc Martens! These are called the Becket (check it out, they sell new for $179.99).

I have been on the lookout for a new pair of combat boots since my beloved purple crackle studded ones were passed along.
I am filled with glee just looking at them. I can't wait to wear them!

The classic sole:
Barely any wear! These were only $60.98 - a fantastic price for nearly-new.

Hope your weekend was fabulous!

A Bustier for Work

Holy smokes it's cold out! We're supposed to get more snow tonight (there's nothing left from last week's dusting). I hope we don't. I'm snowed out for the rest of the year, please and thank you.
That is a rictus of "OMG I'm freezing!".

I tried something different today by layering this grey wool bustier over my pinstriped shirt. I last wore the bustier back in March here for some dinners out while L and I were in Vancouver.
I'm not exactly sure when I last wore this shirt - it's by Club Monaco which results in way too many posts to wade through. I think it was last seen in the July 2012 capsule (recap here), where I wore it 3 times (the last time with a Darth Vader tie, here).
Someone's up to No Good...
The skirt is a beautiful wool vintage one, last worn here (past the golden disco girl pictures!) on my birthday party weekend in October.

The stuff:
Awesome boots! I last wore them in early October here (2nd outfit, with loads of pink).

Big shiny bling:
I had to match the big shiny buttons on the bustier! The cufflinks are L's.

Bustier (Mondi, consignment), shirt (Club Monaco, consignment), skirt (Mister Leonard, vintage 70s, thrifted), boots (Velazquez Baroque, Fluevog), cufflinks (Le Chateau), Death Star ring (Stone Roses, Oscar & Libby's), other ring (Melanie Lyne), earrings (Jacob).

In the Seasonal Mood - Red and Green

Oh, I am starting to feel a little Christmassy! I like to wear my glittery things at this time of year.
I knew this green ultra-ruffly blouse would be perfect for Christmas! I had a lot of compliments on it today...and then I would wave my feet from behind my desk and show people - look! Red shoes!

I thrifted this blouse back in September for $7.00 (it's Oscar de la Renta - woot!), and last wore it here.
I don't think there's any getting around it: this is a Christmas blouse. The jacket, however, is any ol' season. I last wore it here in November with rainy florals (need to wear that skirt again).
The lovely snakeskin leather skirt was last seen here in early November on my shopping day with my niece Zoe. I have diamond-patterned grey tights on (one of my new pairs) - you can see the pattern in the top photo best.

The stuff:
Red shoes! Love red shoes. I last wore them for the Unlimited Woman photo shoot last month here.

Simple bling:
I didn't need a lot with all those ruffles and snakeskin and red and green!

Jacket (Banana Republic, thrifted), blouse (Oscar de la Renta, thrifted), skirt (I.N.C., consignment), shoes (Marc), pin (The Bay, 90s), ring (Oscar & Libby's).

Purple Glitter Skirt of Awesome!

Is it Friday yet? It feels like it should be at least Thursday.
More glitter! This was a fun outfit to wear. It's not often you get to wear a lot of sparkle, but I think you can get away with it at Christmas.

I last wore this skirt in the December 2012 capsule challenge (recap here), where I wore it twice (last time here). I bought it at the Patch in July 2012 (here) for $19.99 - it was new, never worn, and had a tag that said it was a 2-piece outfit. Can't you just picture one of those 80s butterfly tops?
I hate indoor lighting at this time of year!
The sweater was last worn in November (here) with yesterday's skirt! I have a purple cami on under this but you can't really see it.
The skirt has no slit, so I had to take little steps.

The stuff:
My awesome Cydwoq shoes. I would love a pair of their boots one day. I last wore these here in October with one of my leather shirts.

Blue and silver bling:
A bracelet from London, a bracelet that fell in the toilet once, the Scottish ring, my Wendy ring and big dot earrings.

Sweater (Smart Set, thrifted), skirt (Beaded Drama, vintage 80s, thrifted), shoes (Cydwoq), belt (Plum), cuff (St. Paul's Cathedral Gift Shop), bracelet (thrift), lapis lazuli ring (Wendy Brandes), two-dot ring (handmade in Scotland, 1997), earrings (local).

This was my view this morning when I took the stair picture:
Trees, rooftops, and the castle on the right.

Rockin' in a Winter Wonderland - Teal and the History of Stripes

Ah, back from the gym, another crazy day. L's at a guitar lesson and I have a little time. Hello! Thank you for taking a little time to drop by my place. This is my rocker elf outfit.
I had fun working in this outfit today - it was a statement, but it was also comfy as heck. It really showed off these funky tights - I've had them for a year or so.

I picked up this cool tunic dress thing (I'm going to call it a dress) on the weekend, here, for $22.98.
It's not always Vizzini in the background - hi, L!
I can see it being a really comfy and light dress in the summertime, but for now it's getting layered. The thin t-shirt weight sweater is a cashmere blend - you can't even feel it, it's so soft. I mostly just wear it around the house now but I pulled it out to keep me warm. I last wore it here
I've had this sweater for five years - an eternity! Let's have a little fun and go back to some of my old looks (and hairstyles). I got it in a clothing swap with my girlfriend Caro on a Winesday in February 2009 - it was the first time I'd ever done a clothing swap! I actually still have the belt and the jeans I'm wearing in that outfit, but I gave away the shoes ages ago (they killed my feet).

Stripey Tee Sweater has also been worn thusly:

  • April 2009 layered under my Leonard Cohen t-shirt for the first time (I wore that to the gym today, how bizarre).
  • July 2009 in my classic Casual Friday ensemble mix.
  • August 2009 to go visit my inlaws.
  • September 2009 in the 2nd Annual Wardrobe Challenge (I wore it
  • December 2009 in my most popular post. I get a lot of hits for "silver and gold" and "bumbles bounce!" from this.
  • January 2010 for lunch with L.
  • February 2010 for shopping at Winners after work.
  • June 2010 (2nd outfit) for brunch with L.
  • September 2010 (2nd outfit) to the Saanich Fair.
  • November 2010 for a WW meeting and brunch.
  • December 2010 (2nd outfit) for lunch out with Mom.
  • January 2011 for a night of gaming with L.
  • April 2011, introducing my new coworkers to my brand of Casual Friday.
  • June 2011 (down in the middle) to see Steve Earle and the Dukes in concert.
  • August 2011 (3rd outfit) with my purple suede vest and a pair of killer architectural shoes.
  • October 2011 in another rocker-ish outfit, while snuggling with Inigo (aw, I miss him).
  • October 2011 (last outfit) for scary movie night pre-Hallowe'en.
  • March 2012 (2nd outfit) for a really bad layered outfit (I'm into my second month of the 30 for 30 for 12 Challenge) and it's my anniversary.
  • January 2013 (way down) for Winesday, the day Vizzini destroyed my Fluevogs.
  • May 2013 (2nd outfit) for a walk to the grocery store and back.
Wow, just over 20 times. I guess it's holding up pretty good.

Ahem, but I digress. Bring on the stuff:

My new-to-me boots, purchased on the same trip as the dress last weekend. They were quite comfortable, although they scuffed up a lot over the day. I'll have to give them a good Woly rub.

Bigass bling:
Isn't the belt sweet? I got it for $10 at a vintage fair. It has no label, except for the leather stamp (in German) and some numbers. It is thick leather but really soft. With my work keys rattling off my belt and the clinking of this necklace, I made a lot of noise today.

Dress (Kersh, consignment), tights (Trasparenze), belt (vintage), boots (Aerosoles, consignment), necklace (Club Monaco), leather cuff (Guess, thrifted), studded cuff (80s vintage), earrings (Aldo).
