Monochromania! Three Olives, Please, Waiter

It's monochromania (I made that word up)! I first tried a monochrome outfit (all yellow) back here in August, and I enjoyed it so much, I sort of did a an all-red (aside from the shiny! shiny! jacket over it all) the next day. Then I asked you readers for ideas, and I said I would do an all-monochromatic week once I had a full five-day work week. Well, here we are!

Monochromania! Let the insanity begin!
One of the suggested colours was green but I did a bright green monochromatic look for St. Patrick's Day last year (here), so I didn't want to repeat that. However, I did like the idea of doing an all-olive outfit.

Olive the first: my handmade vintage sparkly rhinestone top, last seen here in May. I've gotten good wear out of it this year so far: 4 wears for $12.99. Not bad.
Olive the second: this suede high-waisted skirt, last seen here in August with some creams.
Such a good skirt. One can never have too many leather or suede skirts. I am on the lookout for some brighter ones - turquoise would be fabulous!

I didn't actually wear this jacket except for walking too and from work, but of course, it is olive too.
I last wore it here last week with orange and faux Hermes.

Olive the third:
My Fluevog Wonders Ayers. Lordy, these are so comfortable. They beat nearly every other pair of shoes I own for comfort, even my flats. I last wore them in early August (here, 2nd outfit). All items in today's outfit are "all year" clothes. They don't get packed away.

The stuff:
Even my bling was mostly olive! Although I do tend to think of the rhinestone pin and earrings as lemon-lime.

Blogger challenge! Try a monochrome outfit this week! Any colour you want! Send me a picture (my email is in my profile) or drop me a link in the comments and I'll do a round-up of all the monochromaniacs on the weekend! Are you in??

Top (handmade, vintage, thrifted), skirt (Danier Leather, thrifted), shoes (Wonders Ayers, Fluevog), pin/earrings (Grandma J's, vintage 60s), key ring (local), green/gold ring (consignment).

Monochromania continues! And because I'm in a hurry tonight, here we go. Purple!
I think I could probably do about 6 monochromatic purple looks and not duplicate anything, not even my shoes. This was an easy one, but I was iffy on the outfit until I saw the pictures. Then: yay!

It was a very active day for me: my company did their annual "corporate walk" event, which I organized, and I literally ran all over, back and forth, making sure everyone followed the route, got in the pictures, etc. I was dripping with sweat after that!

Plus, it's a super hot day out (I tell ya! Summer is not over yet!), and I got sweaty again on the walk home. Shortly, I'm off to my Tuesday night WW meeting, and then I can relax when I get home around 8pm tonight. A long day. But enough of my whining! Purple!
This is my lovely soft violet cardi that last wore a few weeks ago (here, 2nd outfit, with orange!), and there in the first outfit of that link is the last time I wore these awesome lavender Camper shoes.
The skirt is my one-of-a-kind silk Smoking Lily chair skirt that - whoa! - I last wore in the December 2012 capsule (recap here). It's a tricky one to style, and the elastic at the waist is all baggy (it's currently safety-pinned on each side to my camisole and my Christian Dior lace half-slip). I'm glad to wear it again, though - it really is a lovely dark amethyst.

Purple stuff:
I had a choice of two purple belts (not including obis with purple in them!), and went with this skinny plum one (which I coincidentally got at Plum a few years ago).

Purple bling:
Little grape glass ball earrings, and some home-grown vintage 80s amethyst jewelry.

Sweater (Kenar, consignment), skirt (Smoking Lily, consignment), shoes (Camper), belt (Plum), earrings (don't remember, but bought them second-hand), key (don't remember), ring/crystal/S (gifts in the 80s from Mom and Dad).

Calling all bloggers! Try a monochrome outfit this week! Any colour you want! Send me a picture (my email is in my profile) or drop me a link in the comments and I'll do a round-up of all the monochromaniacs on the weekend! Go for it!

Monochromania! If It's Blue, I'll Take Two

Hey, monochromaniacs! Have you tried this yet? Give it a shot! Send me a picture this week of you doing a monochrome outfit and I'll include you in a round-up this weekend (my email's in my profile). You can also drop me a comment with a link and I'll grab your picture that way and link back to you.

Today: blue!
Lorena (who inspired this whole thing) asked me in the comments, "Is this [purple] your favourite colour?" Well, yes and no. I really love most colours, especially really saturated, rich colours. Although I've grown to love neutrals, there will always be a big place in my closet for lots of colour. I really can't pick a favourite, although purple (and blue, and yellow, and green, and red) is up there.

So, yes, today: blue! I am getting lots of wear out of this vintage silk top - I last wore it here at the end of July. I only paid $8.50 for it, and this is my fourth wear of it, so I'm down to just over $2 per wear. Not bad!
The skirt is a gorgeous thick wool and cashmere - it is high-end designer from the 80s (Andre Courreges, seriously, look him up). Isn't is a lovely cobalt blue? This is my 5th wear of it - I last wore it here with bits of orange in March. Considering I thrifted it for $5.00 (yes, you read that right), and I am down to $1 per wear, I am very happy with this skirt. It is a classic and it's not leaving my wardrobe.
We are experiencing a crazy heatwave out here on Canada's west coast - it was nearly 30 degrees today! (that's over 90s for you folks on the other scale). I need to get out of these clothes!

The stuff:
Hint: it's all blue
I love these blue suede shoes. They are magnificent. I last wore them back here in May (!) - I guess I have been passing over them in favour of my new blue Fluevogs!

The blue bling:
I like wearing coloured jewelry as a "set" - I have worn this necklace and earring before together (here). And whenever I wear a bit of blue, I have to do my blue rings.

Top (I. Magnin, vintage 80s, thrifted), skirt (Andre Courreges, vintage 80s, thrifted), shoes (Feet First), belt (Danier Leather), pendant (gift from L), earrings (local), leaf ring (locally made in Scotland), lapis lazuli ring (Wendy Brandes).

I have a WW staff meeting tonight, and I don't want to weigh in wearing that 5 lb skirt! I'm just too hot and tired to wear all that and be in a non-air-conditioned environment, so I've changed into this simple blue dress.
Easy-peasy, plus lighter on the scale. I last wore it here in July for my trip to the Ulty field.
Eek! I attempting not to look tired, I ended up with this weird neck thing. I need dinner.

Dress (Simply...Taylor, consignment).

Monochromania - it's where it's at! Have you tried it yet? Go on, you can do it! Send me an email (it's in my profile) with your picture, or a link to your blog post - I'll be doing a round-up this Sunday!

I had another monochromatic colour picked for today: grey. However, when I picked my outfits last weekend (because I find it soothing to make outfits in my closet), I made a layer-heavy grey outfit that relied on boots. Yeah. And no. It's too damned hot for boots.

So: orange you glad I picked orange?
I don't actually try to match my shades - I just put together different shades of the same colour and trust that they will probably go. I knew this top and bottom would work together because I actually have worn them together before here (2nd outfit), back in May 2012 - I even wore the same belt!

I got a few compliments on the top today. I do love a good cowl neck, but they are so hard to find! Why is that? I last wore this top here with my tiki skirt in June. I sweated in it like crazy today, walking to work, walking to another WW meeting (I'm filling in for another leader on vacation), then walking home. Gah. Good thing it's washable!
The skirt is my wondrous orange wool/silk tweed, last seen here in August with blue satin (and a shark!).
I know, the shoes have yellow, but they look orange from the front!

The stuff:
Say goodbye to the nice orange and yellow shoes - they are going in the donate pile. They aren't that comfortable, the heel isn't balanced well and they rubbed my toes. Ah well, I have pictures of them if I miss them. I last wore them here in July while making my own sunshine. And gee, I guess I'll have to look for another pair of orange shoes. Golly, what a chore, hee hee.

Shiny bling:
If it's an orange outfit, it's got to be copper!

Top (Michael Kors, consignment), skirt (Talbot's, consignment), shoes (Portia), belt (Club Monaco), copper cuff/earrings (Judith Hirczy), spinner ring (Twang & Pearl), floral ring (Sarah Coventry, vintage).

Hey, have you heard? Monochrome is modern! What is it? Monochrome is wearing one colour head-to-toe, including jewelry and accessories. What's monochromania? A made-up word (by me) for those who love this look! As such, I'm a monochromaniac. Well, maybe just the "maniac" part, ha ha.

As you might have read, I'm challenging you, dear readers and fellow bloggers, to try this yourself. Stretch your boundaries, put yourself outside your comfort zone! I'll be featuring pictures of anyone who wants to play along - just drop me an email (it's in my profile) with your photo or a comment with the link to your blog entry (I'll link back). I'll post the round-up on Sunday, so get busy!

Anyway, enough jibber-jabber, it's Friday and you know the wine is calling to me... "Sheila...drink me..." That wine, always so seductive. I won't, however, be wearing this outfit when I uncork that lovely red wine.
Me (aka "Madame Spillypants" as L calls me) plus white is pretty much a disaster waiting to happen. I did pretty good today at work and avoided pen marks on myself and coffee spills, but I did splatter my green curry on my top and right at the end of the day I got cocoa powder all over my pants when I was refilling the coffee machine's cocoa reservoir. Good gravy.

However, I enjoyed flouting the "no white after Labour Day" so-called rule and enjoyed my all-white outfit, even though all items are now in the wash.

We have the white drapey cardigan, last seen here in August with my chambray dress.
We have the pretty little white structured top, which was last featured here in July under my denim dress (I love that look).
And then we have the white cropped pedal pushers, which do such nice things for my butt. Heh. I last wore them here (third outfit, after the cat pictures) a couple of weekends ago, after rediscovering them in my little-used pant drawer in my dresser.

This will probably be the last wear of the cardigan, pants and shoes for the summer season. I'll keep the top in rotation as it's a good layering piece.

The stuff:
Fabulously comfy white shoes and the one white accessory I have (well, I was tempted by my bigass white fabric flower but it felt too fussy). I last wore the shoes here last Friday with pink and gingham. They were awesome for rushing around today.

Cardigan (Bellisima, consignment), top (Le Chateau, consignment), pedal pushers (Contrast, thrifted), shoes (Aerosoles, thrifted), earrings (Plum).

This morning I woke up to a layer of fog outside - it is hot in the daytime but we get cold ocean air pulling in overnight. It's getting cooler in the mornings. Soon, we'll have to pull Vizzini's scratching post indoors for the fall/winter.
"I'm watching for falling leaves. I'll report later."
You can see that the Garry oak trees' leaves are starting to turn in the background. One good stretch of cool weather and they'll all be gold and orange.

I called Vizzini to get him to look at the camera.
"What do you want now?"
He was having none of it. I petted him and scritched him under the chin until he roused himself from "loaf position".
"I'm the epitome of catness."
Such a pretty boy, and such a fine mustache he has! Once he was up, he was game for walking the balcony ledge. He quickly spotted something.
Ignore my dirty windows.
The sun was trying to burn through the fog. But what's that?
Our neighbour Terry's cat
Aw, kitty sleeping. The maple trees are turning faster than the oaks.

Wishing you a weekend of gentle fog, colourful leaves and snoozing.

Ya ready? This is a big post!

Hello, monochromaniacs! We had four brave souls who stepped up to the monochrome challenge this week:

Mica, of Away From Blue:
Mica, and the best accessory, Cooper
Mica wore challenged herself to not do an easy monochrome outfit, and instead worked this wonderful orange/rust/beige look. Even Cooper's leash goes!

Beth of The Fashionable Adventures of Bethie the Boo:
Mom-to-be Beth
Beth rocked the all-neutral look, ground it with this comfy taupe dress, matching shoes (love the brown trim) and patterned shirt.

Kasmira of What I Wore 2Day:
Kasmira is a great inspiration
I can always count on Kasmira to fully commit to a challenge! Here's, she's done what most of us can only dream of: all magenta! I love how the touches of red only serve to amp this up to 11. Awesome!

Tamera, at The Menopausal Supermodel:
Tamera's creativity wows me
Tamera did a grey monochrome look, mixing this cute top (note the customizing ruching on the side with a vintage brooch) with this dark grey maxi skirt. Love the bling!

And I though y'all might want a monochrome round-up of my outfits. You can click the days to go to the original posts.

L and his buddies went to Seattle this weekend to see tonight's football game vs. the San Francisco 49ers. Go, Seahawks! This left me with a lovely weekend all to myself. I invited a couple dozen fashionably-inclined women from my pool of friends and co-workers to bring their good clothes to a swap at my house on Saturday night. I provided food and some wine, and everyone brought a yummy dish to share and more wine.

I had to buy some last-minute food items and cleaning supplies, so I headed to town on Saturday morning. I also planned to swing by the WIN Boutique on my way and see if the Karma Fashion Gods were smiling. It was a lovely day, slightly chillier but still sunny and bright out.
I wore a pink cami under this navy wool cardigan (last seen, eeek, back in the April 2012 capsule, recap here).

I've see a few other bloggers doing the "Tulle and a Teacup" thing over the past year. I'm slow to catch up with these memes. But I decided to play along and sit with my tulle(ish) skirt in my new chair, with my coffee cup. I don't use teacups, but my mug is bone china.
It has bicycles on it. And yes, I drink my coffee with a straw. It keeps my teeth from getting coffee stains (two of my front teeth are fake, so stains are noticeable).
The lovely skirt billowed in the breeze as I walked around. It all felt very romantic.
That's a lot of skirt! I last wore it here in August for a floofy Friday with flies.

Part of what made my outfit feel romantic to me was all the stuff.
Especially the suede roses on my purple shoes (last seen here in August, with green and teal, 3rd outfit).

Floral bling:
I nearly forgot about this wonderful floral necklace. This may be the first time I've worn it as a necklace, since I think the only other time I've worn it was for New Year's Eve 2013 (here, 2nd outfit, as a band on my vintage top hat).

Cardigan (Mango Suit, thrifted), skirt (Lapis, consignment), shoes (Chie Mihara), necklace (She She Shoes, local), ring (local), earrings (don't remember).

I did a quick run-through of my closet before I headed out. Someone was very eager to help me.
So innocent, yet so deadly.
I keep a close eye on him when he's in there.

I had a good day at the thrift boutique.
I have seen the sleeveless blazer look (um, I think they call that a vest), and thought I would give it a shot. This has a nice structure in the shoulders, much as an actual jacket would, and it's very nicely tailored through the waist, giving the helm a strong flare. It's a solid black, and is by Sandra Angelozzi. It was $13.50.

My luck with tops continued with this sweet sheer floral:
It's an XL and is made in Canada - it doesn't fit like an XL. That's why I always ignore sizing and just look for quality.

Love the little black collar and the row of black buttons up the back.
I'm excited to wear this with a fitted pencil skirt. No brand label in it - it was $5.00.

I adore this wonderful salmon orange satin shirt:
It is another XL and does fit quite oversized. I'm hoping that it will work with a slim bottom as well, since pencil skirts are a dominant shape in my wardrobe. I couldn't resist - it was brand new (tags on!) and only $12.50. The brand is Mark.

I'm always on the lookout for replacements for my junky t-shirt material camisoles.
This is a glorious red satin, with a great neckline and a little bit of gathering. It fits perfectly, is by Spence, and was $4.00.

Lots of oranges and reds seemed to be hopping into my basket, capped off with this awesome striped cardigan sweater:
I love how perfectly the stripes are lined up, particularly the biggest black stripe across the middle. That's a nice mark of quality.
I couldn't find anything about the brand (it's not Adrienne Papell), but it felt nice enough for $6.00.

I lucked out on these wonderfully soft flats.
They are an off-white, with the rougher suede background giving them a tile-like appearance. I like the roses shapes.

Super comfy:
"Where were you? I missed you! Feed me!"
The soles are very soft rubber:
Part of the fun of finding a good score for me is researching the brand after I buy something. I knew these were good quality, but to find out that The Flexx* is committed to ethical, local production in Italy? That's awesome! These were all of $14.50, and would have sold for at least $98.00 new.
*linking because: impressed!

After I got home, I spent 3+ hours cleaning my house, then prepping food for the swap. About 10 women made it and we had an awesome time going through all the clothes, drinking, eating and chatting. Everyone left with bags of new-to-them items. This morning, my girlfriend Caro came back and took all the leftovers down to Value Village for me. More good karma!

Today, I dressed for another shopping expedition: groceries! The day started out white then got somewhat sunny, then we had thunder and lightning and now it's getting quite windy. I can hear acorns falling on the roof!

I dressed for layers, as I strolled over to My Sister's Closet after groceries for a wee shop, trusting that the Smiling Karma Gods had appreciated my clothing recycling and would reward me with a good find or two.
Likely the last wear of the summer of this awesome chambray dress (last seen here in August as my wear-to-Ulty outfit).

I was glad of the addition of the blazer, as it was quite a lot cooler than it's been.
I last wore it here last week as the topper with my all-olive outfit. And I wore my new-to-me shoes on their inaugural shopping trip - they were quite comfy for about 3 hours, then my feet got tired. So not bad.
Someone is missing L and is being very needy. We need some cuddling time.

Blazer (RW & Co., consignment), dress (Blues by J. Arcaro, vintage 90s, thrifted), shoes (The Flexx, thrifted), obi (Smoking Lily), earrings (Plum), ring (local), spinner ring (Twang & Pearl), zipper rose (Victoria & Albert Museum Gift Shop).

I must be have a surplus of good karma. Check it out:
A lovely drapey layering top in a most glorious rich blue. Love all that nice gathering at the front and the ruching on the sides. It's by Anne Klein and was on half price for $8.50.

I can't resist leather.
This no-slit A-line leather skirt is by INC Petites. The snakeskin print is timeless. This was a bargain at $22.98.

But this is the real find of the weekend:
Black Italian leather jacket, with croc texture.

Inside pockets on either side of the zipper.
Made in Canada - hurray!

Wonderful shape and seaming.
I'll be wearing this as a blazer, not as outerwear. It's just killer on.

Of course, it's Danier, but not just regular ol' Danier, but Danier Couture:
As I have purchased a high-end Danier coat made in Canada from Italian leather from their retail store (this red coat, regular price $799.00), I know this would have been at least $500.00 new, and likely more. I paid $58.98. Score!

I hope you all had a great weekend! It's thundering more now and kitty is getting nervous, so I'm going to go snuggle up and see if I can spot L and his friends in the football crowd.

Chinese Tunic and a Skull

Monday, and I'm waiting for L to get home from Seattle. I always enjoy the first day he's gone, then I miss him. Also, Vizzini is being a pain - he wants his favourite nap person.

So, today I wore one of my new-to-me items, this fabulous burgundy tunic.
I bought it in a thrift store for $8.00 here a couple of weeks ago - it's by Tian Art, which is sort of a Chinese haute couture brand. Isn't it awesome? I got tons of compliments on it today and enjoyed flashing the pink satin lining.
I'm wearing my hot pink Smoking Lily skirt with the giant red skull on the side of it (you can see a bit of the skull in the above picture). It perfectly matched the lining.
I last wore the skirt here in May with pops of red (and maybe Flying Spaghetti Monsters?).

The stuff:
I last wore these cherry red shoes here in June with chartreuse.

After a week of monochrome, it was great to get back to "regular" clothes - then I realized my whole outfit was tones of red, burgundy and pink. Um, that's still pretty matchy.

Red and blue bling:
My standard coral suite and the Fulvia Ring by Wendy Brandes.

Jacket (Tian Art, thrifted), skirt (Smoking Lily), shoes (Sencha Teapots, Fluevog), bracelet (Plum), earrings (local), Fulvia Ring (Wendy Brandes).

Cognac, Peach and Leather Pants!

I got a lot of, "You're wearing pants!" comments today. Oh come on, it's not that rare.
My "oh, shoot, my new neighbour is watching me" look
However, the leather pants always draw comments, whenever I wear them. They are pretty rockin'. I haven't worn them since back in February (here, with combat boots and a blazer).

They were perfect for this new, thrifted blouse (purchased here on the weekend for $12.50, new with tags on!).
Once again, I kept everything in the same colour family; all warm tones veering into neutrals. When I "had my colours done" back in the early 80s, this salmon/coral colour was recommend for me (I was a Spring, supposedly). The last time I remember this colour having a big moment was back in about '81-'82.
The blouse was awesome all day...until I got a spatter of oil from the catered lasagna on it. Arg. And then I walked home and pitted out the arms. It is drying off right now before I head off to WW.

The stuff:
I like a bit of a heel with these trousers. These are my Ralph Lauren pumps, last seen here in May with orange, olive and yellow. They are an excellent basic shoe, perfectly the right height.

Big brown bling:
I gave away many of my old "long chain" necklaces on the weekend at the swap (just mall store ones), but I hung onto this one that Mom got me for Christmas last year.

Blouse (Mark, thrifted), pants (Gap, thrifted), shoes (Ralph Lauren), belt (Shi Studio), buckle (Shi Studio, thrifted), cuff (SkinZnHydez), spinner ring (Twang & Pearl), key ring (local).

Whoa, How Could I Have Missed These Stripes?

Hey, all, I can't believe I forgot to write my post yesterday! I uploaded my photos, cropped and sized them, then totally missed actually writing the post. I wondered this morning why I didn't have any comments! Man, I must be getting old.

So, without further ado, here we are:
Watching for the neighbour in her kitchen window.
My new-to-me stripey cardigan, purchased here on the weekend at the thrift boutique for all of $6.00.

I know why this got donated - the buttons pop open if you even look at them! I was re-buttoning all day. I'll probably sew them shut at some point, but I'm lazy about those sort of things. All I can say is: good thing I was wearing a cami!
The skirt is a fabulously comfortable t-shirt material - it's by local company Floating Gold Iceberg, and was last worn here in July (with dragons!).
I love the little silk-screened detail on the kick-pleat.

The stuff:
Kept it simple with all black. I held these boots out from storage back when I switched to my spring/summer wardrobe over at the end of March, thinking that I might want to wear them as the weather cooled at the end of the summer. And here we are, not quite done summer - although, the last time I wore them was here in mid-March while I was being a gusty pirate. Heh.

Big bling:
Simple, but classic.

Sweater (Papell, thrifted), cami (InWear), skirt (Floating Gold Iceberg, consignment), boots (Marc Softwalk), belt (Plum), cuff (Guess, thrifted), earrings (The Cobbler), ring (Oscar & Libby's).

Snakeskin and Leather

Today was One of Those Days. I forgot to run the dishwasher at work last night, so no mugs for coffee (disaster!). I realized at 11:45am that, although I had done up the catering order, printed and filed it, that I had not actually sent it to the caterer. Yikes! Thank goodness my caterers are awesome - they saved my bacon today!

At least I looked competent, even if I was a scatterbrained mess!
I'm kickin' butt and takin' names. Leather tip to toe! I actually got the jacket, top and skirt all in the same store (My Sister's Closet) last weekend here.

I wore the jacket as a blazer - that's likely how I'm going to wear it going forward as it's not really thick enough for outerwear. I wore it unzipped all day like this.
The skirt doesn't have a slit, but it's got a slight A-line to it so it was fine for walking. It was the perfect length (no having to cover up when I sat down!).
The top on its own - it's hard to imagine sometimes what a drapey piece like this will look like on the body when you see it like this (picture of just the top) on a hanger. I love the neckline (no camisole needed), and the ruching on the sides. I have to be careful with some tops, as they can exaggerate my boobular region.
The jacket zipped up - it's very sleek. No sweaters under there! It was warm enough today that I didn't have to wear anything but this on my walk to/from work.

The stuff:
I filled in again after work at a WW meeting - this is it, back to just my regular Tues nighters now - and the folks at the meeting loved my shoes. They are pretty spectacular, I admit. I last wore them here in August for L's 25th high school reunion (here, 2nd outfit) and danced the night away in them.

I think I will keep them out for the fall/winter season and not pack them away, even though they are an open toe. I love them too much to not have them available if I feel like wearing them. Are the cool kids still wearing tights with open-toed shoes? Would you wear them like that for winter?

Big blue bling:
The usual suspects.

And now, dinner and the wine is calling me! Have a great evening!

Jacket (Danier Couture, consignment), top (Anne Klein, consignment), skirt (INC, consignment), shoes (Garden of Enjoyment Rita, Fluevog), lapis lazuli and Fulvia rings (Wendy Brandes), earrings (local).

Finally Friday - It's Hawaii and...Boston!

Is it just me, or did this seem like a really long week? TGIF!

My work had "Hawaiian Shirt Day" this week, as the last official Friday of summer (ending this weekend).
I borrowed this shirt from L, but realized partway through the day: jeez, Louise, you own a vintage Hawaiian designer dress! But whatever, it was still a fun outfit. I enjoyed all my co-workers doing a double-take when they noticed the Boston "B" logo. Yes, you're not imagining things: I, a Canadian woman, am wearing a Boston Bruins shirt.

L got this about 12 years ago, in a sports store that had these shirts in all of the "Original 6" NHL hockey teams. He wears it to summer events sometimes.
L has been a fan of the Bruins since he was a kid in the 70s - it was the era of Canadian boy, Bobby Orr. I grew up watching "Hockey Night in Canada" and remember hearing, "He shoots, he scores! Bobby Orr!"

We have a bunch of Bruins stuff around the house (that I stash away when guests come over), and a bunch of NFL Miami Dolphins stuff. We actually have a sports shrine in the den that includes a framed signed picture of Bobby Orr, L's 2011 Stanley Cup champion caps, and...oh heck, I'll just take a picture of it. It's too awesome.
The medals are actually mine. Hanging on the left on Bobby Orr's picture is my medal for completing the Royal Victoria Marathon, and on the right are my 10K race medals. I have 1 bronze, 3 silvers and 2 gold.

Erm, anyway, hey, look, pants! I am indeed wearing pants for the second time this week. Will wonders never cease.
I last wore these cropped jeans here in May. In that post, I noted that it had been 15 months since I last wore them - this time it was only 4 months! Not bad. Jeans and I are not close acquaintances.

The stuff:
Zebra goes with Hawaiian, right?

My Kraft Dinner shoes make probably their last appearance before I pack them away next weekend. I last wore them in July, here, with a Betsey Johnson brocade corset top.

Well, I am off to crash on the couch with a nice glass of dry apple cider. Have a lovely weekend!

Shirt (borrowed from L), jeans (Sandwich, swap from Caro), shoes (Tsubo), belt (Leather World), buckle (She She Shoes), cuff (thrifted).

Weekend Wildlife and September Inspirations

Ah, the weekend! It's been nice and quiet over here, just recharging my batteries for the fall/winter season ahead. This is always the busiest time of the year for us, with lots of parties (I just sent out my birthday party invitations!), tons of socializing and events going on. It's good to have that downtime, at least for me.

We played Ultimate on Saturday morning. It started off foggy, but cleared off into a gorgeous sunny day. This is what I wore to the field.
"Oh, jeez, there's my neighbour."
The neighbour across the way hasn't spotted me yet, but it's only a matter of time. Although I wasn't visible to my neighbour (yet), I'm still participating in Patti's "Visible Monday" over at Not Dead Yet Style(now moving to an "every fortnight" format - good for you, Patti!). Ch-ch-ch-check it out!

I wore my lovely olive parachute skirt, for the final time of the summer. I didn't wear it a whole lot this past season, last time here in July when I went out painting with Mom and Elaine, but I'm all right with that. It's still a keeper, year after year.
I last wore this teal cardigan earlier this month, also in an pre-Ulty outfit (different overall vibe, though), here.

The shoes are my new-to-me super-flexxy flats, purchased and last worn here a week ago.

Cardigan (Kersh, consignment), cami (Smart Set), skirt (Cute Options), shoes (The Flexx, thrifted), belt (Club Monaco), scarf (Smoking Lily, 90s), earrings (Erica Weiner).

I love this time of year! The blustery, cooler weather, the changing leaves.
Do you see the spider web there? Those maple leaves are just starting to turn golden. Vizzini merps at the spiders.

When I was outside doing my stair shot, I spotted two squirrels frantically gathering acorns that had fallen off the Garry oak trees.
"Nom nom, acorns."
This guy took off so fast his tail is a blur
There are dozens of squirrels around in the surrounding trees.

This morning, Vizzini was on full patrol. A maple leaf had landed on the deck roof!
"Halt! Identify yourself!"
He gets very agitated when he can't reach the leaves. It was very windy and rainy this morning, but that leaf didn't budge.
"Can't...reach..."
His tail is thumping wildly against the window, as if to try to intimidate the leaf into falling.
"I'm protecting the home from this evil intruder!"
Officer Vizzini is on the case. You may all relax.

------------------------

Okay, so although I don't put much stock in fashion magazines, I do love the pretty pictures. They give me ideas for different ways to play with my clothes. I don't want to feel my style is stagnant - it's always evolving (I hope) and I'm always looking for new (or old, revisited) ways to change things up. These are some pages ripped out of the September InStyle and Vogue that have given me ideas for autumn/winter dressing this year.

Here's what's inspiring me, with links to things I already own that I can work into new looks.

Colour! Or not.
I've already done monochrome blue (here), but I have been wanting to rest a little (only a little!) from all the bright colours over the last couple of years. Grey is attracting me, as is black. I particularly like the mix of tones of blue (hence, the monochromania) and all the textures of the greys.

Although I'm not a huge black wearer, I do have a substantial amount of it in my wardrobe. In the righthand picture, I really like the dress on the far right, how it's worn with the Edwardian boots and textured tights. I have boots like those and a dress similar to that.

Specific trends:
The moto jacket: I have my shiny Smoking Lily one and maybe a few in leather. Autumn is when I like to bust out my leather outerwear, so expect to see lots of those jackets. I'm also going to be wearing leather tops (like this one) and jackets (like this one and this one). Although those aren't the cross-zip styling of moto, they are close enough for me to play with this look.

Animal prints:You know I love animal prints! I have leopard shoes and snakeskin shoes, a leopard skirt, a snakeskin skirt, a zebra print skirt, a leopard sheer blouse, a leopard cardigan...This is a gimme for me.

New look: Grunge re-dux:
What's it is: leather skirts (I have too many of those to link up to!), mixed with casual tops, a dash of plaid and some luxe details.

What I'm seeing here (from left, clockwise):

  • Black leather mini with grey sweater/sweatshirt. Not a flared short skirt on me, but I have a black leather short skirt/dress that I can do this with (like this outfit).
  • Sparkly dress layered over a more casual top. I have this sequined dress that could work with this kind of look.
  • Red leather skirt (check) with grey top (check), booties (check) and a wide 80s-style belt (check, not linking to my many bigass belts).
  • Black leather pencil skirt: yup, got that.
  • Socks with classic pumps, with plaid. I'm not sure what it is was about this Clarks ad, but I really like the socks with shoes. I have these teal pumps that are very similar to the ones in the picture, and this plaid dress. Can I do it? Will I do it? There's the question. Look out, L, I may be raiding your sock drawer!
  • More plaid! I adore plaid. Along with the aforementioned dress, there's this skirt, this woolly skirt, this sweet dress, my plaid cape/skirt, this fabulous vintage skirt, this vintage pencil skirt...I'm sure there's more!
Circle skirts with belted blazers, with flat boots:

I am totally in love with this look. The cinched waist, the flowy skirt contrasted with the tailored menswear-style jacket. Can do! Will do! I have at least 2-3 circle skirts that hit that length, including this full-length version in suede. I also have a couple of neutral jackets that will work really well with this look, like my classic black wool blazer (noting cuffs can be rolled, and love the leather gloves too) and this wonderful vintage brown blazer. The belt is a little narrower than most of my bigass belts, so expect to see that slightly adjusted.

I have a few pairs of boots that will work for this look, like these black ones, these red ones (dig the harness detail), and these brown ones.

More casual tops, dressed up:
I've bought a couple of sweaters with the intent of doing this look: this brown one, and this blue one - haven't worn them yet, as it's still too warm out. I like how they are worn with tulip skirts (thinking about the bottom half of the Kim Cattrall suit), and straight sweater skirts (like this straight brown maxi sweater skirt).

I also picked up this awesome grey sweatshirt with the studded shoulders. I don't intent to overdo the sweatshirt look - I doubt I'll buy another one - but it's a fun thing to try out. Why not?

Dark elaborate florals:
These dark florals really appeal to me. I sort of did this look in the 90s, but don't really have much like this in my wardrobe now. The recent purchase of this dark floral blouse will work, and I may have to dig this vintage Laura Ashley dress (now I'm glad I kept it) out of the Closet Archives to wear layered so that I get the floral skirt part (the dress is too big as is).

I will be on the lookout for more on my thrifting journeys, but I can also work the dark florals through tights (like these ones in the middle that I haven't worn yet). I'll also be on the lookout for replacements for my purple combat boots (RIP) for that authentic 90s vibe.

Curvy suits and separates:
Another major look that I am all over! I have at least two beautiful tweed skirt suits (the Kim Cattrall suit and this green tweed one I wore for Hallowe'en last year), plus so many hourglass-cut dresses. I adore this ladylike look and will be rocking this big-time, with skinny/medium-width belts, statement necklaces, and classic heels. Love.

Shiny! Brocade!
Another look that strongly appeals to me. I've always been a bit of a crow when it comes to shiny, elaborate, or embroidered clothes, and I love the look of Indian and Oriental-inspired items. Items I'm excited to be working with this fall: my Desigual coat, this shiny Aldo coat, this newly thrifted Asian designer jacket, this new-to-me beaded top, this brocade waistcoat, this silk and beaded shawl, my cheongsam-style top, and this wonderful dress that I've been saving for party season.

Along with that last embroidered dress, for other shapely dresses, I have this fabulous red one, this vintage orange and black lace one (gotta wear that around Hallowe'en!), and my classic black shirtwaist dress that could be dressed up with some shiny accessories. This look could also be re-created by using a fitted top with a matching or similar pouffy skirt. I can do that!

Break all the rules!
I ripped this page out because it's totally copying my strapless wool dress that I wear over t-shirts and other tops. "Don't dress safe" - ha! I've been doing that look for years! Check it out, 2010.

Accessories that inspire:
Big, candy-coloured stones. Those remind me of all the fabulous vintage rhinestone pieces I have.

Multi-ropes of pearls. Yup, I've done that before (in 2008), but it feels fresh again after 5 years.

Painted shoes and leather gloves:
I have yet to customize my Vizzini-fied Fluevogs, but wouldn't splashy painted flowers be cool?

I love the look of long leather gloves worn with a sleek dress and ankle-strap shoes. Very chic! I have long brown leather gloves, as well as a few pairs of velvet ones. This could also work with a fitted top/pencil skirt combo and gloves.
-------------------------

Well, after all that, I am champing at the bit to get to my closet changeover - I'll be cleaning out my spring/summer clothes next weekend, and giving y'all a good look at my mess.

What's inspiring you this fall/winter season? Do any of the above looks or trends call to you?

Three Months Early - Green Oscar

Some clothes just belong to certain seasons. This blouse = Christmas. I don't think there's any way around it.
It's very green - when I stood next to someone in red today at work, we looked like we should be doing our Christmas card portrait. It's also ruffliscious. It has a rather formal look about it.

Anyway, green is what it is. This is its first outing, having thrifted it a couple of weeks back here for a whopping $7.00. Not bad for Oscar de la Renta.
The skirt is my old tried-and-true houndstooth. It's an excellent quality skirt - always fits, doesn't pill, and doesn't look cheap. I last wore it here in March with orange, red and lacy black legs.
"Bored with your pictures. Feed me."
The stuff:
Darjeeling? Why yes, thank you, I'd love a spot of tea. I last wore my Teapots here in August with floofy and flies.

Big blingy bling:
I probably should have forwent the glittery jewelry to keep the Christmas vibe on the down-low, but I can't resist the opportunity to wear Grandma J's jet necklace.

Blouse (Oscar de la Renta, thrifted), skirt (Nygard, consignment), shoes (Darjeeling Teapots, Fluevog, second-hand), leather obi (consignment), necklace (vintage 60s, Grandma J's), brooch (The Bay), earrings (don't remember, cheap).

Dark Florals and the Last Red Rose

And now it's Tuesday.

Following my weekend perusal of the September issues of some of the trendy fashion mags, here's my take on dark florals:
(Sidenote: if you haven't seen the movie "The September Issue" (IMDB link) it's well worth it for a glimpse behind the scenes of making of the 2007 Vogue September issue).

This is the sheer floral blouse I thrifted a couple of weekends ago, here. I may have chortled to myself while removing the $5.00 price tag this morning. I do love the little black collar.
I have a black camisole on under it.
It still has its "Made in Canada" tag and washing instructions on the lower side seam, but the brand tag has been removed at the back of the neck (probably because it showed through - I hate that). I suspect that it's a Le Chateau piece. Why? They do trendy items, often carry lines that are made domestically, and it's an XL. Whackadoo sizing, man.
I love this high-waisted Gianfraco Ferre vintage 80s wool pencil skirt, last worn a couple of short weeks ago here with blood red and floral. That's not the most flattering butt shot ever, so please trust me that my rear view looked good!

It's outerwear season again, so if the mood strikes me, I'll take pictures of my coats. This is my gorgeous Danier Leather (made in Canada!) that I treated myself to last year, on half-price retail for $399. No, I didn't miss a decimal point; the regular price was $799.00.
Also important: good walking shoes!
However, I wear it a LOT, and it's worth it to me to support Canadian industry and manufacturing.

The stuff:
Ah, the last wear of my lovely Miz Mooz two-tone red wedges, last seen here with my shiny pink and gold jacket in July (I need to wear that jacket again). These are strictly a spring/summer shoe for me, so away they will go this weekend.

Of course, I followed the floral motif in the blouse and shoes with my Flower O'Clock bracelet:
The blouse has red, peach, coral, lilac, magenta, white and pink in it, so I just picked out those colours for the accent pieces. Easy!

Blouse (no label, thrifted), skirt (Gianfranco Ferre via Giorgio Beverley Hills, vintage 80s, thrifted), shoes (Miz Mooz, consignment), belt (Plum), cuff/earrings (Le Chateau), ring (Oscar & Libby's).

Turquoise and Magenta - Last Gasp of Summer

It was a lovely day today: sunny and clear, with just hint of autumn's crispness. Perfect for breaking out one of my summer skirts.
I was going to do a more neutral top, and then I thought, "Why not magenta?" Indeed! Why not? I got lots of compliments on the combo today, so I must be doing something right.

The skirt was last worn here in June with zigzags, and before that here in March with ruffles (and this same belt, how original of me!). Three wears in a season is fine by me. I do notice that I tend to pop the skirt off black a lot, though.
I'm wearing a black top (last seen here, with plaid in August) under the cardigan.
The cardigan is such a glorious colour. I last wore it several times in one weekend on our funeral trip to Powell River back here in June.

I will miss this skirt over the fall/winter season, but I know I have a turquoise suede skirt (with fringe!) that is coming out of storage (I'm so excited!).

The stuff:
All matchy-matchy, of course. The shoes are being slowly worn to death - I thrifted them for $4.00 back in April 2011, and I don't know what I'm going to do when they wear out! Maybe buy these, heh heh. I last wore them here in August with my lacy peplum top.

Blue bling!
And a belt with fire-breathing skulls. Because that's how I roll.

Cardigan (Jacob, thrifted), black top (Mossimo, consignment), skirt (Cabri, thrifted), shoes (Enzo Angiolini, thrifted), belt (consignment), felt flower/earrings (local), lapis lazuli ring/Fulvia Ring (Wendy Brandes).

Monochromania Revisted: Heavy Metal

When I did a week of Monochromania (i.e. wearing the same colour or tones of the same colour top-to-bottom) earlier this month, I had another outfit planned that I had to nix due to hot weather. And here it is.
I really enjoyed this outfit, especially the comments. Most people really liked it, although I got some teasing about being an extra in "Rollerball" (totally, check out the guy's shoulders).

Actually, this outfit was a real mental boost because I had a dentist appointment tonight after work, and I was hugely dreading it. I felt like I was fortified with external armour. I don't do well with dentists. I knocked out my front teeth when I was 17 and went through a solid year of surgeries and root canals; I also grow tartar like a boss, so I've gone through a few years of agonizing scaling. Pleasant stuff it is not. Anyway, I put on a tough face.
Yeah, so scary.
This is my studded shoulder sweatshirt/sweater getting its second wearing. I last wore it here in August while channeling the 80s.

It was much warmer with this striped button-down French cuff shirt, which was last seen - oh dear - over a year ago (!) when it was in the July 2012 capsule (recap here). I did wear it three times that month, and it was packed away for the 6-month autumn/winter season. Still, only one wear...
The skirt is dark grey, and it's one of the plainest items of clothing I own, but I love it - it's the perfect pencil shape, it's stretchy and it's a great length. It's also washable. But the best thing is that it works as a solid grounding piece for all the crazy, unique pieces (aka wardrobe orphans) that I have, and lets them shine. I last wore it here in August with my lace peplum top.

The stuff:
And there are my amazing grey wooly boots. I walked home from the dentist in them (about 20 minutes) and they were wonderfully comfy. I last wore them back in April (here, 2nd outfit). They are good early spring/early autumn boots - excellent transition boots. I'm still going bare-legged, although it's getting pretty chilly in the mornings.

I had to do my "teeth" necklace and my spider and snake ring for extra scariness!

Sweatshirt (Silence + Noise, consignment), shirt (Club Monaco, consignment), skirt (Plum), boots (Prepare Volunteers), necklace (the Bay), cuff (thrifted), spider ring (homegrown vintage 80s, gift from Mom and Dad), spider ring (homegrown vintage 80s).

Birthday Week! Ribbon and Reptile

My birthday is this week (can you tell I like my birthday? it's not like this is a secret!), so I'm pulling out some of my very favourite clothes and shoes to wear for my week of celebration.
Hello, pasty-white legs!
Starting off: this gorgeous croc-stamped leather jacket, last seen here in September with blue and leather snakeskin.
Layered under that is my burnt orange shirt (last seen here in March with leather and turquoise).
The skirt is one of my very favourites - I wore it last in the January capsule (recap here). It was packed away with the fall/winter stuff, but I love the shape and the fabric.

The stuff:
I adore these shoes - so fun! I haven't worn them since March (here, also with this orange shirt!). They were heaven to wear all day today, since my feet were still sore from 8 hours in those gold sandals this weekend.

Bling:
My new-to-me 50s/60s ring and a modern necklace that I've had for over 6 years.

Jacket (Danier Couture, consignment), blouse (Mexx, consignment), skirt (MNG by Mango, consignment), belt (Plum), necklace (Melanie Lynne), earrings (Aldo Accessories), ring (vintage).

Birthday Week! Flashback: 90s Dark Florals

Birthday week continues! Thank you everyone for your kind wishes - the big day is tomorrow!

And so today, I dragged out something...really old (like me, hee hee).
My second stab at dark florals (following this blouse outfit here last month) revolves around one of the items in my "Closet Archives" - this black and small red and white floral print dress. I've had the dress for at least 15 years - bought it on consignment (on the sale rack) for about $24.00 back in the late 90s.

There is one picture of me wearing it back in around 1999 in this post of my Closet Archive dresses. It's by Laura Ashley, and it's likely from the late 80s/early 90s - it has baggy shoulders from someone removing the obviously large shoulder pads.
This brocade jacket, however, has stupendous shoulders. Look at that nice shape! I am thrilled to have this back in my wardrobe after the spring/summer on closet holiday. I last wore it here in February with my leather pants and purple combat boots (I still need to replace those).
I liked the high contrast of the cream and black, with the pops of dark red. I'm wearing a full, flouncy vintage cherry red slip underneath for extra Swoosh Factor.

The stuff:
Beautiful boots. Get used to 'em, I wear them a lot, including just last Monday here, with the Holy Ship! dress.

Killer bling:
Zippers and skulls, 'cause that's how I roll (especially in October!). Do you have a Hallowe'en costume picked out yet? I do!

Jacket (Le Chateau, consignment), slip (Suzette Lingerie, vintage, consignment), dress (Laura Ashley, vintage 80s/90s, consignment), boots (Miz Mooz), zipper rose (Victoria & Albert Museum Gift Shop), earrings (local), spoon ring (About Tine), red ring (Oscar & Libby's), obi (local).

Birthday Week! Love, Leather and Leopard

Happy Birthday to me! Yesterday was my 46th birthday, and frankly, I've been having such a great time, it's hard to find a few minutes to drop a post. Forgive me for not visiting y'all as much as I'd like to, but life gets in the way!

So, of course, I wore leather for my birthday.
And yeah, I was saving those gorgeous shoes for my big day.

It was one of my best birthdays ever. I am truly honoured by the outpouring of the affection and good wishes and gifts I received (and am still receiving) from my adored L, my family, my dear friends and my wonderful coworkers. I certainly teared up once or twice.

I really love my birthday, but I talk to a lot of people who are "meh" about their birthdays. I used to be like that; I never celebrated it, except for with my family and closest friends. I remember the last year that I deliberately chose not to celebrate: Blue Rodeo (my favourite band) was coming to town and I had never seen them before. And I chose not to go, even though L would have gotten us tickets. I didn't do anything for my birthday, didn't tell my friends or coworkers it was coming.

My birthday that year sucked. I had turned down the opportunity to have fun on my birthday. When my friends found out, a few of them said they wished they had known, that they would have liked to have gone out for dinner or bought me a card.

I realized that it's okay to celebrate yourself, and you know, once a year we're all entitled to it. So the next year I threw a party for the "October Birthdays" (there are a lot of them - I bet you all know a ton). I got cards, a couple of little gifts, nice emails. It felt great to receive so much good will from people, good will that they wanted to show to me.

I've celebrated my birthday with gusto for over 15 years now - I'll never go back to neglecting it. It charges my batteries for the whole year! You get what you give in life, and on your birthday, that comes back to you. I am working on giving a positive vibe to people; based on the good vibes I got this year, it certainly seems to be working.

*ahem*

Cara, huge props to you for coming up with the term "Soft Gothic" - I love it! I think I may be a Soft Goth.
I am happy to have this blouse out of spring/summer storage - it is truly a favourite. I've had it since March 2011 - I thrifted it for $4.50 and I've worn it easily a dozen times (it's machine washable, tumble dry!). I last wore it here in February under my red dress (and with the same tights).
Black leather skirt: well, it's a classic to me. Love it! I've had this since December 2011 (check it out, same blouse!) I last wore this awesome vintage 80s pencil skirt here in May with monstrous red shoes. Yeah, red and black and pattern is definitely one of my themes.

Howdy! I spent a good amount of time in my outerwear today. I went out for dinner with my besties Cat and Elaine, then we went to see "Funny Girl", a classic 1960s movie with Barbra Streisand. Man, she can sing! And costumes were to die for!
I also spent a lot of time walking in my new red shoes. I'm happy to report: they were awesome.

The stuff:
Gah, those just may be the perfect red shoes!  So utterly beautiful. I just bought them last weekend on clearance sale at one of my favourite stores for $111.00.

Lots of heavy metal too.

Blouse (Marcona, thrifted), skirt (Hemingway, vintage 80s, consignment), shoes (Marc), belt (gift from Mom), necklace (gift from Tina), silver/red ring (Oscar & Libby's), steel ring (vintage 50s, handmade).

These are my gifts from L, as well as a gift certificate to my favourite diner (thank you, Architecture team) and a couple of boxes of chocolate that I got from one of the directors at work.
Laphroig Quarter Cask Single Malt Scotch, the new Stephen King, the last two "Walking Dead" graphic novels, a steampunk novel, the new Kings of Leon and Janelle Monae CDs. I also got a couple of bottles of wine, a box of mini cupcakes, a bunch of cards and flowers (orange roses, I'll take a picture tomorrow - they're at work, away from Vizzini).

L also gave me this:
I actually picked this out at the Vintage Expo a couple of weeks ago. I think it is from the 30s, probably brass, and is from China or Japan. It's good quality costume (not high-end - can you imagine what Wendy Brandes would do with this idea?). One of the clasps has been replaced with a more recent one; the bracelet has the original. It has no marks or stamps on it.

Check it out.
Dragons! Each is mounted on a stamped brass backing, and there is a blue-green-white stone (not plastic or synthetic) mounted on it. What an amazing piece. Thank you, love.

Today, I wore my favourite tights and my favourite prints: leopard!
When I have trouble sleeping (not that often, but sometimes) I put together outfits in my head until I fall asleep. This is one of them.

This blouse is sort of on the fence for me right now. I love that it's this great shade of blue, I love that it's sheer, but I really don't wear it that much. Last time was during the April 2012 capsule (recap here). To be fair, it has been packed away for 6 months, and I only actually had 2 months in which to wear it after the capsule challenge was over. I last wore it in this outfit, layered under one of my leather dresses - maybe it's just a great layering piece.
What is that blur in the background?
The brown sweater vest is a piece I've had for quite a while. I don't really wear it much anymore either, but I like it as a finishing piece over a blouse like this. I last wore it during the November 2012 capsule (recap here); this was the last outfit with it.

The skirt is a lovely silky leopard. I last wore it here in July with the same shoes.
"Hey, I'm busy here, do you mind?"
The stuff:
Such a great classic shoe. I last wore these with the same skirt back here in July.

Big blue bling:
My Wendy Brandes ring, a pendant from L and blue glass beads.

Blouse (Express, thrifted), vest (gift from Ruth), skirt (Club Monaco), shoes (Nine West, thrifted), pendant (gift from L), ring (Wendy Brandes), earrings (local).

I had lunch with my mom today. She gave me a gift card, flowers (carnations, of course, for my Grandad), and these awesome locally-made earrings:
They are by Angelique Cejka of AC Silverworks (about her).

The inner and outer copper hoops spin:
Aren't they beautiful?

Mom also gave me these two pictures. Remember my Hawaiian 70s dress (2nd outfit)? Here it is on the original owner, Joyce.
Dude in the middle - what the heck? Is it some sort of bizarre German restaurant? Why are they holding hands?
Sorry, Joyce, I think it looks better on me! But I do love it.

Mom also gave me this picture:
Probably a local shot, possibly my Aunt Kathy's house from the 70s (it had a black bathroom, including toilet!).
She thought it was the pink dress that I tried on (picture) but the one in this picture has a different skirt with pleats. However, Mom did mention that Kathy had held onto the pink dress for me! How cool. I could live with mashed boobs just to wear that once...

Well, there you have it. I have a very busy weekend ahead! It's not only Canadian Thanksgiving (so happy turkey day to my Canuck friends!), but we're going to a monster-themed burlesque (gotta work on my costume tonight) and I have one of my nieces on the weekend for her birthday. I better sneak some naps in there!

I still have one more day of my weekend - Happy Thanksgiving to my Canadian friends! - but I'm about to have a PVR recording conflict, and L is out for the evening, so here we go! I won't be leaving the house tomorrow anyway, so no outfit. Heh.

Friday! It felt so long in coming, and what a crazy, hectic day it was. Good thing I had ruffles.

Lots of them! And lace, and bows!

I think I last wore this ruffly floral blouse as part of my New Year's Eve outfit last year (here) - it has no label, although I'm pretty sure it's Bianca Nygard. It was packed away with the autumn/winter stuff.
I have a couple of denim vests - this one has been in storage too - it was featured in the January capsule (recap here), but was last worn in this outfit (3rd down) a couple of days after the challenge ended.
I adore the skirt - it's got such a fun steampunk-y vibe without being too costumey. Maybe I should be a Soft Steampunk Goth? I last wore the skirt here in July with thrifted Betsey Johnson.

The stuff:
Oh, how I missed these shoes! Aren't they wonderful? Bows and metallic, oh my! I last wore them here in March with leopard and leather.

'Eavy metal bling:
The usual suspects.

Blouse (no label/Bianca Nygard?, consignment), vest (Bisou Bisou, consignment), skirt (Orwell, thrifted), shoes (Jeffrey Campbell), cuff (About Tine), key ring (local), spinner ring (Twang & Pearl), earrings (Plum).

Birthday Week winds down, but look at all my cards and flowers:
The roses are just gorgeous.

After work, L and I rushed home to get ready for this year's Monster Bash (remember last year's? no, neither do I!).
Well, hello
This year, I reprised a favourite costume from 2010: the Mad Hatter. No one that I know now ever saw that costume, so what the heck!

Due to packing things away and changes in my wardrobe in 3 years, I made a few changes. For one, I wanted to look a little more mad.
Mad, you say?
This is my most awesome striped Noa Noa frock coat, last seen here in March, and I am wearing a double corset! It's my grey bustier top (picture here, from this long post), with my black velvet stomacher (picture here, from this long post) over top of that. A sash from an old skirt is tied in a bow around my neck.

The skirt is my floofy summery skirt (last seen here after the Monochromania round-up), worn over my Noa Noa black fluffy underskirt (last seen here in May). I have little brass curtain pulls tied with caramel ribbon, and working to pull up various parts of my skirt to expose the black fluffy one. I also have a couple of brooches pulling up the hem.

I have striped tights on, and my Marc boots (last seen here in September with stripes) for walking, although we cabbed both ways tonight.

All the clothing and accessories were things I had already - I didn't buy anything for this costume.
Quite mad
I had more fun with my make-up this time, going a little more for the horror look (it was a Monster Bash after all!). I used paler base, and a green stick to erase my lips (I loved having little bitty creepy doll lips). I also shaded around my eyes and in my cheekbones with grey eyeshadow for a spooky look.
I drew swirls coming off one eye on this side. I'm also wearing the same false eyelashes as I did for the 70s party.

I didn't have time to do my eyebrows! I meant to do little arched ones, and I will, when I wear this to work for Hallowe'en. Heh, coworkers, get ready!

L and I made quite the couple. As always...
You better watch out
L and I are both literary sorts. Me, a character from "Alice in Wonderland" and he was Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde from the R. L. Stevenson novel of the same name.
Cover one half, then cover the other
Here's his Mr. Hyde side.
I love a man who can leer
Vizzini was not at all disconcerted by our costumes. We made L's costume by destroying an old dress shirt. I shredded half of it, splashed fake blood on it, then took it outside and rubbed it in the dirt. The walking stick has fake blood and hair on it. Yeah, we go there - for Hallowe'en, I love pushing the limits.

The cool and collected Dr. Jekyll:
All very normal, including lovey cat
Half of a vest, a black lace ascot and a vintage pocket watch, plus a cufflink and pinky ring. It was fun to see people's reactions! There was no costume contest this year, but people loved our outfits.

My accessories and props:
It's all about the props
I bought the bone china cup and saucer on a break at work, for $5 at the WIN store. I put the saucer in my coat pocket and the cup under my top hat. I perfected a deep curtsy, removed my hat, pulled out the cup, then slipped the saucer out of the pocket, and then held them up together. It was quite an entrance!

The fluffs of lace are my cuffs; I put needle threaders on my white gold hoops, and wore my black leather biker gloves.

My hat:
In case you wondered, that green tube on the left is my green make-up stick - it negates redness, and is how I wiped out my lips
The hat is vintage 80s Le Chateau; L rescued it out of a donation pile from his former boss's wife about 13 years ago. I claimed it and he had to go buy a real one for himself. Ha!

I clipped my black fascinator to the back knot, and attached a butterfly clip to my Smoking Lily obi.
I made a hat size sign out of a sticky note, and pinned a key and my scarab pin to it, along with a bunch of straight pins.

My seam ripper is over 30 years old.
I stuck more pins to the front of my frock coat, pinned a strip or two of ribbon to the front, and had the measuring tape hung around my neck.
The curtain tassel was found in the bottom of a drawer, so I safety-pinned it on as well.

There was a booth of vintage goodies at the show. I bought these 60s-70s silver shoe clips for $2.00.
They appealed to me.

The show was amazing: burlesque, grotesqueries, humour, music, and just an incredible spectacle. I can't wait for next year!

I was in pretty good shape on Saturday morning - hurray for exercising restraint (moi?). A big bunch of our friends met up for breakfast at our favourite diner.
Yes, I might have blue socks on
The thick sweater and tulip skirt silhouette I've been looking forward to trying. I quite liked how it turned out. Not too bulky.

This is my new-to-me thrifted Dex sweater (purchased here on consignment for $26.00). The colour is a deep indigo - it looks purple in bright sunlight.
I had a camisole on under it - it was nice and soft, and I liked the shape of it. It didn't bag out, which is a major issue I have with sweaters.

The skirt is the fabulous one gifted to me by Megan Mae (mwah!).
I last wore it here for Valentine's Day.

It was a lovely balmy day, so I just did gloves (ourple leather, cashmere lined) and a fabulous silk scarf, from the lovely Lynne.
The boots are my grey wool Fluevogs, last seen here (scroll down to the striped shirt) for the Vintage Expo last month.

I moseyed on over to the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store after breakfast, and found this great classic pencil skirt.
It's a deep teal-green, and is by Selma K. It's likely from the 80s - it's a wool/polyester blend, and is a gorgeous cut. It was only $2.00! Score!

I meandered up to the Hospice Thrift store, but despite them having oodles of new winter stock in, I didn't find anything that worked for me. I ran into my friend Karen there, though, and we continued our thrifting adventure up at the WIN Boutique.

I had much better luck there, and we ran into our girl Cat! It was a thrifting triad of awesome, I tell ya.

I found this fab 90s Talbot's corduroy skirt.
It's a perfect fit on me, and I love the colour. It was $10.50.

I am a sucker for these long swooshy maxi skirts:
This one is by Planet and was only $16.50 - it would have been well over $100 new. The fit is fantastic on it. I can't wait to wear it!

And having tried the thick sweater/fitted skirt look once and liked it, of course I needed another sweater:
Why this one works for me: the collar is wider, it's fitted to the body, and it has 3/4 sleeves. It's wonderfully thick, 100% Merino wool, too - it's by Wilfred, a brand sold at Aritzia (an upscale mall store). Their sweaters cost upwards of $100+. It was also $16.50, so score! The colour is a pale olive green.

L and I hung out and played board games last night, and I was up bright and early for "Day with Auntie Sheila" for my now-11-year-old niece Hannah! Her birthday is the day after mine - happy birthday, hon!

Another sunny and warm day today, so I pulled out the sweater look yet again. Hey, I have a lot of sweaters, and I like to try new looks.
I quite liked this, and I'm sure I will do it again with a different top and skirt with this caramel sweater. This is the first wear of it; it was thrifted here back in August for $13.50.

I wore one of my many long-sleeved layering t-shirts under it (a burgundy one).
The skirt is my other Smoking Lily cape - this one has a birch tree pattern up the side. This piece didn't make it into a capsule; shamefully, I haven't worn it since December 2011! Eeek!
Belting the sweater was a good idea - it was quite baggy.

The boots are a favourite pair. I last wore them in March here (scroll down), with a fluffy patchwork skirt.

The stuff:
Thrifted, gifted and locally-made. Love.

Sweater (Coldwater Creek, thrifted), top (don't recall), skirt/cape (Smoking Lily, thrifted), boots (Miz Mooz), belt (Shi Studio), buckle (Shi Studio, thrifted), cuff (SkinZnHydez), key ring (local), spinner ring (Twang & Pearl), copper earrings (gift from Mom, Angelique Cjeka).

Hannah and I had a good time shopping. It's cool to get to know my niece better, and to have our ritual day together every year. In two weeks, I have her big sis, Zoe!

Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend! I'll be back on Tuesday.
